THIRD POV
Mario noticed Evelyn's eyes resting at the entrance, making him look in the direction, and he saw his father.
"Oh, dad," Mario said, unwrapping Evelyn, who lowered her gaze as she held her arm and rubbed it nervously.
"I need to see you in my office." Adrian's husky voice placed Evelyn on the edge again.
"Okay dad," Mario said.
Evelyn glanced at Adrian, locking eyes with his, but he averted them right after.
"Now," he ordered, and walked away.
Evelyn let out a breath she didn't know she was holding as Mario turned to her.
Mario furrowed his brows at Evelyn's unsettled look. He waved it off as he took her hands, claiming her attention.
"You have nothing to worry about, Evie."
Evelyn stared at him.
"I am allowed to call you that, right?" He asked, smiling.
She nodded, giving a lazy smile.
"Cool. Like I said, you have nothing to worry about. My dad is not a threat. I mean he is a threat to bastards out there, but not to you."
Evelyn's heart reacted after he said that. Adrian is the Don. That means the boss of their Mafia.
"I mean he gave me the permission to give you a guest room. So see? You don't have anything to worry about," Mario said.
Evelyn nodded slightly.
He reached for her hair and moved a strand behind her ear.
Evelyn gave a tiny smile.
"I have to go. Mimi will....."
"I am here," Mimi chipped in, walking into the room with some clothes in her hands, getting their attention.
"Right on time," Mario said to Mimi, who smiled at him. His eyes moved back to Evelyn.
"Take a shower and relax. I might not see you for the rest of the night, but I will see you at breakfast tomorrow morning. My aunt, Dolores, makes the sweetest pancakes. You will enjoy it." He said, caressing her hair and smiling at her.
Evelyn smiled as well.
"Promise me no tears," he said.
She nodded slightly.
"Cool. Good night," he said, rubbing her arm slightly before walking out of the room.
Evelyn stared at him as he left.
"He really likes you," Mimi said to her, handing over the clothes to her. "This is my first time seeing him like this for someone." Mimi added.
Evelyn forced a tiny smile, feeling awkward as she stared at the clothes in her hands.
"Oh, well, just get settled in and get some sleep. You look tired." Mimi said.
Evelyn nodded. "Thank you,"
"You are welcome. Good night," Mimi said, walking out of the room.
Evelyn let out a sigh as she raised the clothes to look at them properly. It is a pink night gown with a deep pink teddy bear design on it and some new underwear.
She felt comfortable holding the things and grateful that Mimi got her some new underwear. She is sure this night gown will be a perfect fit because she and Mimi are almost the same body size.
She walked towards the bed and placed the clothes on the bed. She walked towards where she guessed to be the bathroom.
Entering it, she closed the door behind her and her eyes roamed the shiny and spacious bathroom with a large bathtub and a bathing side. Her eyes moved to the left where she stood, and she saw herself in the mirror.
She took in her pathetic face, making her heart ache.
Sighing, she stripped off her clothes and packed her hair.
***********
Along the hallway, Mimi was walking cheerfully, humming a song by Taylor Swift. She stared at her feet, admiring her new polished nails as she walked. She smiled at it till she bumped into someone who held her arms protectively.
It was Lucas, one of Mario's loyal friends and allies. But he wasn't alone. He was with Manuel.
Mimi whimpered slightly.
"I am sorry, ma'am." Lucas said, withdrawing his hands from her arms.
Mimi shook her head, feeling her heart racing as she let out a slight scoff. "No, it is my fault. I uh...I wasn't looking," she said, moving the strand of hair behind her ear nervously.
"I hope I didn't hurt you," Lucas asked worriedly.
Manuel stared at them unpleasantly, as Mimi couldn't get enough of Lucas' enchanting blue eyes.
"N..."
"Please excuse us, ma'am," Manuel chipped in, grabbing Lucas and walked past Mimi.
Mimi stared at them as they walked, heaving a sigh of disappointment as she continued heading towards her direction.
"The hell is your problem, Manuel?" Lucas asked, sounding annoyed as they walked.
"Nothing. Let's just keep going." Manuel said.
"Fuck off," Lucas muttered, releasing his hand from Manuel's hold and walked ahead of him.
"Hey, wait up," Manuel called, following him behind.
*********
Back in the living room, Candela is pacing the room in a fuming rage with a glass of wine in her hand. Dante is still seated on the sofa, sipping whiskey nonchalantly.
Dolores is seated on the opposite sofa, getting worked up by her sister's rage.
"How could he disrespect me like that in front of that dirty..... piece of....ugh," Candela groaned, gulping her drink.
"Can you calm down, Candy?" Dolores asked.
"Don't tell me to calm down, Dolores. Don't you dare!" Candela snapped.
"You are getting worked up over nothing," Dolores said.
Candela scoffed. "Shut your mouth, stupid. I have a dirty stranger in my house, and you say I am getting worked up over nothing? Seriously?"
"You heard what Mario said. Her parents were killed, and their house was burnt down. The poor girl was almost killed as well. He is just helping someone in need. And Adrian was thoughtful enough to let her stay." Dolores said, feeling her heart react after she mentioned Adrian's name.
"Do I look like I care, Huh?!" Candela asked, glaring at Dolores, who just looked away.
"I don't bloody care about some dirty stranger, okay? Mario should have let her die for all I care." Candela said, placing one of her hands on her hip.
Dolores furrowed her brows at her.
Candela let out a breath and flipped her hair.
"He should have let her die instead of bringing her to my fucking house." Candela added.
Dolores shook her head in disbelief.
"Adrian always do this. He always makes me look foolish in front of people. When will he stop that shit?" Candela asked rhetorically.
Dante let out a scoff as he got on his feet, making Candela move her eyes to him momentarily.
"Well, I will retire now." He said, placing his empty glass on the table.
"Good night, ladies," he said, looking between Candela and her sister momentarily with a smirk before heading for the stairs where Mimi was descending from.
Candela let out a breath, picking up the bottle of whiskey and poured herself more drink into her glass.
"Candy, you shouldn't say such things about people," Dolores.
"I will say whatever the fuck I want. Don't you dare tell me what to do." Candela snarled, gulping her drink as Mimi approached them. She noticed the tension between them, making her furrow her brows slightly.
"Will you ever change? That girl looks helpless. Mario did the right...."
"Shut up, Dolores. I won't warn you again." Candela warned, giving Dolores a dead stare.
Dolores shook her head slightly in disbelief.
"Come on, mum. Let's go to bed." Mimi said to Dolores, wanting to get her mother away from her grumpy aunt.
She hates it whenever Candela talks to her mum like she is nothing.
"Yes, go to bed, Dolores. Your mother needs some sleep to help heal her naive brain and stop talking nonsense." Candela said to Mimi, before dropping her empty glass on the table and walking away angrily.
Mimi stared at her as she ascended the stairs.
Dolores heaved a sigh as she got on her feet.
"Let's go, sweetie," Dolores said to Mimi.
"You can't keep letting her talk to you like that, mum" Mimi said.
"I know, baby, but she is my elder sister and this is their house. Thanks to her, we are not on the streets."
"Still she can't keep treating you like that. Uncle Adrian and cousin Mario treat us better than she does," Mimi said, rolling her eyes and looking away as she folded her hands.
"Let's just go to bed, sweetie. By tomorrow, your aunt will be calm."
"Yeah right. If only that was valid." Mimi muttered, walking ahead and her mother followed her behind.
At the kitchen door, a blond girl dressed in the typical ash and white maids' attire is peeping through the kitchen door, staring at Dolores and Mimi ascending the stairs. She moved her head the more, trying to get a better and satisfied look at them.
Another maid with brunette hair approached from behind her with a questionable look.
"Camilla," the brunette girl called, making the blond one flinch.
"God, Liliana, don't scare me like that," Camilla said, heaving a sigh.
"What were you peeping at like that?" Lilian asked, placing her hands on her hips.
"The bosses," Camilla said.
"What about them?"
"Can you believe that my man brought a girl back home?" Camilla asked.
Lilliana furrowed her brows. "You have a man?"
Camilla gave her a scowl.
Lilliana shrugged. "I didn't know you had a man, Camilla."
"The boss' son, Mario."
Lilliana's face twitched and it is immediately replaced with a mocking grin.
"How many times will I tell you that?" Camilla asked.
Lilliana scoffed. "You mean your future -impossible man?"
Camilla scowled at her. "Very funny, Lilly. I am not like you who decided to give up on the person she loves."
Lilliana scoffed. "I don't love anyone."
"Yeah right. What do you call the way you look at and react around Lucas?" Camilla asked with a raised brow.
Lilliana's heart reacted slightly but she suppressed it.
"I call it nothing, okay? Stop assuming things. What girl did the boss' son come back with anyway?" Liliana asked, changing the topic.
Camilla scoffed in irritation. "Some weird-looking girl he picked from the woods. You should have seen her. Mario said her parents were killed and their house was burnt down."
"Oh my God," Liliana exclaimed slightly, placing her hand on her chest.
"I thought madam would kick her out but the boss...."
"Kick her out? Why?" Lilliana asked, furrowing her brows. Camilla stared at her.
"She clearly needs help. Mario did the right thing bringing her here. And it is late and dangerous out there." Lilliana said.
Camillascoffed. "Oh please, she is not our problem." She said, walking past Lilliana and further into the kitchen.
"Well, she is Mario's problem. Actually I think Mario wants her to be his problem." Lilliana said, making Camilla frown as she began cleaning the island angrily.
Lilliana smiled and folded her hands as she stared at Camilla.
"You should have seen the way Mario was begging his father to let her stay. It was so annoying, Lilliana,"
"You are just jealous that Mario has someone else and he is not looking your way at all," Lilliana said.
Camilia scoffed. "Mario can't be for someone else, Lilly. He is mine."
Lilliana raised her brows. "Okay. Obsessive much."
"I am not obsessed. But watch and see. I will not stop until Mario marries me." Camilla said with all seriousness, making Lilliana's face twitch.
"Marry?"
"Yes. Marry."
Lilliana shook her head in disbelief. "You are delusional. I am going to bed." She said, walking out of the kitchen.
"Join me when you are done with your fairytale stories." Lilliana said.
Camilla angrily dropped her hand towel on the Island and let out an angry sigh as she recalled the way Mario was holding that girl he brought and begging his father to let her stay.
"So annoying," she muttered.
**************
Evelyn stared at herself in the mirror dressed in the night gown and her hair is left to fall.
Her heart tightened as she recalled that moment Annamarie walked in on her naked in her room back at home. She was staring at herself like this in the mirror.
She never knew what was coming or what her nanny she has known for years had in mind.
Her hers clenched as she walked towards the bed and got under the covers.
The bed was very comfortable as she laid on it. She reached for the light and turned it off before laying on her back.
She let out a breath as she stared at the dark but the full moon is igniting the room through the windows.
Tears flowed down her eyes as she thought of her parents. Her heart clenched severely at the fact that she will never see her parents again.
A knock came on her door.
She froze.
