[JUSTIN’S POV]

I was able to see with my very own eyes how Margarette fell off the stairs just as she was able to free herself from my hold on her.

The events transpired at an alarmingly rapid pace, and before I knew it, she was already lying on the bottom of the stairs, bleeding and unconscious.

“Marga!” I let out a scream. Immediately, my reflexes compelled me to make a beeline for her and remove her from the situation. As soon as I was able to retrieve her body, I noticed that her head was bleeding from a cut, and it was oozing with a great deal of blood that had already stained her clothes.

“Claude! I need help! Can nine-one-one quick!” My voice erupted as soon as I was able to hold Margarette in my arms.

I had the sensation that my thoughts were floating in the air. There was no way that I could have possibly anticipated that things would go in this direction. If I had known, I would not have even bothered to make an effort to strike up a conversation with Margarette.

I did not

[ JUSTIN'S POV ]The nurses were successful in kicking me out, and yet, even as I was outside my mind was still preoccupied by the thought of Margarette inside.A moment later, there was a middle-aged female doctor approaching the isolated area from where Marga was.She must be the doctor. My instinct told me I should check it out despite knowing that the nurses would eventually try and stop me anyway."Sir, please. it's off limits from beyond this point."Just as I thought. And yet, I haven't even made it inside to see what's going on."I just wish to know what's going on. Let me see her at least." I replied back, and although I was talking to the nurse, I literally louden my voice enough for whoever the doctor was inside to hear me.Not a moment longer, my goal seemed to have worked as the female doctor finally got out of where Margarette was."How is she? how is my wife?" I hurriedly asked as soon as she stepped out.The female doctor slid her hands on her lab gown pockets as thoug

[MARGARETTE’S POV]When I woke up, I instantly felt numbness all over me. But by the time that I tried to move my legs and elbow to stand up, that was when I instantly felt soreness that was intolerable.“Please don’t move, miss. You’ll only hurt yourself.” A woman in white uniform wearing gloves while inserting some kind of a vial into a IV catheter attached to my other hand. A nurse? Why? Am I inside a hospital? I wanted to talk but there was a tube attached to my lungs that was enabling me to breathe. Everything was so hard for me. I wasn’t sure how did I arrive into this situation, why am I feeling soreness all over like I am fragile broken glass that was just temporary put together and had the tendency to shatter at once if I move.Helpless, I obeyed the nurse and rested my back on the hospital bed. And because there was no other way I could do at the moment, I simply had to surrender to what they wanted. As I was lying on the bed, the nurse suddenly approached me as soon as s

A week after what felt like hell because of being confined for so long at the hospital, I almost thought I wouldn't last long. It was like even though I managed to survive the fall, I still felt like my other foot was already buried beneath the ground. Everything was like a tug of war game with death. But thankfully, I was able to survive that. It was even a miracle I could say that the child inside my belly was able to survive that fall and even my long period of stay at the hospital. The doctors under Aunt Lou’s orders were pretty much hands on in regards to my condition and the baby inside me, making sure that everything goes well.My aunt Lou simply has all the powers to do that knowing her husband was the medical director of the hospital. Without that authority and power she had on back, perhaps Justin could’ve have already learned about the truth of my pregnancy.“Margarette? Is something wrong?” speaking of Justin, he suddenly took away my attention while in the middle of dee

[ JUSTIN’S POV ]I had this bad feeling that what my mother has called me to ask something that has to do with Margarette’s accident. A few hours after the incident that almost took Margarette’s life, mother made a surprise visit at the company to check on the surveillance cameras for reasons I am not aware.I was only fortunate that Claude was even quicker than me to think about destroying the CCTv cameras in my office floors even at the exit connected to my floor so that evidence about Margarette’s fall would never leak out.Now it became a puzzle for me why on earth my mother suddenly wishes to see me and her tone even felt like it was something very urgent that I couldn’t even refuse.“Sit down, Justin.” Mother instantly told me the moment I entered her study. The moment felt insulting as I looked like a little boy who was about to be reprimanded by his mother. Knowing my mother, she would only be agitated if I turned my back on her now. However, as I obeyed her, I immediately

"Mother, what nonsense are you even talking about?" I immediately uttered to my mother so Andt she may refrain from inquiring further. As she was in the middle of trying to come up with a wave of her baseless accusations, i then added, "I instructed Regina to take this documents for me, mother. there's nothing to worry about here." I was hoping those answers would be enough to persuade my mother. However, it would seem that she happened to be not quite done just yet."Oh really, son? Then why Regina of all people?" And here she goes again with that attitude of hers towards Regina."Mother, we're not going to argue on this matter again, aren't we?" I reitarated. The path from which this conversation was leading to has been giving me the irritation I couldn't fully express knowing it was my mother who was testing me."Son, all that I'm concerned about is the company and its assets. You know I don't trust Regina, and so does your grandma. Just what do you think she would tell you once

[ MARGARETTE’S POV ]The process of my healing wasn’t that easy but I had Justin to always look after me. Without my husband to take care of me, I couldn’t even begin to imagine how I would have survived the past few weeks.Although if there was anything that I regret up to this very moment, perhaps it was the fact that I still couldn’t recall the few fragments of what took place prior to my accident. For some reason, it always remains blank whenever I try to recall what happened back then.It surely feels a bit scary when a horrible incident from your past becomes a mystery on how you were able to get through that.“Marga? Are you ready? We still need to see grandma today before we meet with the caterer.” Justin eventually reminded me of the appointment we needed to do for the day.Grandma’s eighth birthday shall be coming up in a few week’s time. Justin volunteered to prepare for the caterer on grandma’s huge celebration. And as his wife, I simply couldn’t just stand idly by. I also

As Justin and I concluded our errands for today, the two of us came to the decision to drop by at our favorite restaurant. It was just like yesterday, when I remember having an argument with Justin here because of Regina. However, things must have changed now because of Regina. Right now, I was under the impression that Regina could really be out of the picture.I didn’t have any idea whether what I believed was even true, however, I haven’t really seen Regina lately, so it gives me the impression that Justin may have actually discarded his mistress.Although when I tried to ponder it, I still had a few doubts that I was only fooling myself. I know that Justin couldn’t easily forget the woman he truly loves. He may have become more caring for me, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he could instantly remove Regina from his life.I have never seen Justin take a moment to be away from me since the accident. Which was why I suddenly came to the conclusion that he may have actually discard

Regina’s words left me raising a brow at her as my two hands were clutched together. “The nerve of you to even call me a whore when you’re the one who was trying to ruin my marriage with Justin.” I retorted, not trying to let someone like her intimidate me.Regina finally return the watch she has on her hand and this time, and it caused me to look at that item I was eyeing to purchase since earlier.“Did you really just come here to display your filthy behavior?” Regina even added, it brought me to become more irritated at her that I found myself almost wanting to slap her for her chosen words. However, I was not really in the mood to pick up on her ways to provoke me. Not today.I came into this shop with the sole intent of purchasing a watch I’ve seen earlier. It was a watch that I intended to buy for Grandma’s birthday present. When I saw Regina holding the limited edition watch, it made me feel somewhat intimidated. Like I really wanted to get that first. I don’t know if it was

The night felt heavier than before, the air thick with unspoken tension as we pieced together what Elise’s father’s return truly meant. My mind raced through the implications—if he had found her, it meant he wasn’t working alone. It meant he had resources, people willing to do his bidding, and most of all, it meant we weren’t prepared for what was coming.Elise hadn’t moved from her place on the couch, her fingers white-knuckling the phone. She wasn’t the same woman I had met before—there was something fragile about her now, something shattered. I understood that feeling far too well.Leon and Dorian were standing near the kitchen island, speaking in hushed voices, but I caught fragments of their conversation.“We need to move her somewhere else,” Dorian said, arms crossed. “If he got to her once, he can do it again.”Leon ran a hand through his hair, his jaw tight. “Moving her won’t change anything if he has the means to track her.”“Then what do you suggest? We wait for him to knock

The tension still lingered, like static in the air, even after we had ensured Elise’s safety and returned to the penthouse. The night had been long, exhausting, and I was running on nothing but adrenaline and borrowed time.Leon stood at the kitchen counter, pouring himself a glass of whiskey. The amber liquid swirled in the crystal tumbler as he took a slow sip, his eyes trained on me. He didn’t have to say anything—I could feel the weight of his gaze."You’re shaking," he murmured.I exhaled sharply, glancing down at my hands. He was right. I hadn’t even realized it.Leon set his glass down and crossed the space between us in two strides. His hands, warm and steady, caught mine, stilling them. "Come here."I let him pull me into his arms, the exhaustion catching up to me all at once. I buried my face against his chest, breathing him in—woodsy cologne, something faintly smoky, something undeniably him."You always act like you have to carry the weight of everything on your own," he m

The air in the penthouse was heavy with unspoken tension. I sat at the desk, eyes scanning through the files, absorbing the weight of what we had in our hands. The evidence was undeniable. Justin and Elise’s father had left a trail of financial crimes, bribes, and illegal dealings that could tear their empire apart. The question was—how did we move forward without tipping them off too soon?Leon stood behind me, his presence strong and reassuring. His hand was still on my shoulder, grounding me in the moment. "We need to be careful with this," he murmured.I nodded. "I know. We have to strike at the right moment."Dorian, now lounging on the couch, exhaled loudly. "I hate waiting. Feels like we should be doing something more than just sitting on this.""Patience is key," Leon countered. "If we rush, we lose the advantage."Dorian rolled his eyes but didn’t argue. I closed my laptop and stretched, the weight of the day settling deep into my bones. "I need a break."Leon caught my hand

The drive to the meeting location was tense, the air thick with anticipation. I sat in the passenger seat, my fingers gripping the leather armrest while Leon navigated through the city streets. Dorian was in the back, too casual for my liking, but that was just how he handled pressure. I wished I could be that indifferent. Instead, my mind kept cycling through every possible outcome of this meeting.Elise had made her choice. That much was clear. But whether it was out of self-preservation or something else entirely, we would soon find out."Where did she say we’re meeting?" Leon asked, his voice steady."An old train yard on the outskirts of the city," I replied, reading the address she had sent. "Secluded. Not many ways in or out."Leon didn’t like it. I could tell by the way his jaw clenched. "Sounds like a setup."Dorian chuckled from the backseat. "Sounds like someone’s being paranoid."Leon ignored him, eyes still on the road. "I don’t like unknown variables, Margarette. If she’

The next few days passed in a blur of careful planning and tense anticipation. Elise’s information had given us a direction, but we still had work to do—connections to make, leverage to gather. It should have consumed all my focus. But Leon was a distraction I couldn’t shake. No matter how much I told myself that our night together hadn’t changed anything, I felt it in the way he looked at me, in the way his fingers brushed against mine when he handed me a file, in the way his presence filled every quiet moment. He didn’t push, didn’t demand more than I could give, but the weight of everything left unsaid pressed down on me.I wasn’t sure if I was grateful or terrified.***Late one night, I found myself pacing the penthouse balcony, the cold air biting through my thin sweater. The city sprawled beneath me, glittering and endless, yet I felt trapped in my own thoughts.“You’re thinking too loud again.”I turned to see Leon stepping onto the balcony, his hands tucked into the pockets o

The meeting with Elise was set. That should have been my focus. But my mind kept replaying last night—Leon’s lips on mine, the way he held me as if he couldn’t bear to let go.I inhaled sharply and pushed the thought away. There was no space for distractions. The restaurant Elise had chosen was a high-end establishment, the kind that catered to politicians and business elites who wanted to talk without prying eyes listening in. The dim lighting and low chatter made it the perfect place for clandestine discussions.Leon and I arrived together, though we were careful not to look too familiar. Dorian had insisted on waiting outside, just in case.Elise was already seated when we arrived. She was dressed elegantly in a dark blazer, her posture stiff with tension. As soon as she spotted us, her eyes flicked to Leon, then to me.“You came,” she said, her voice steady but guarded.I slid into the seat across from her, Leon taking the one beside me. “You asked, we answered.”Her lips pressed

The weight of Leon’s words settled over me, thick and inescapable. I could feel the heat of his gaze, his possessiveness wrapping around me like an invisible chain. A part of me wanted to push back, to tell him that I didn’t belong to anyone. But the other part—the part that craved the way he looked at me, the way his presence consumed me—refused to speak.Instead, I exhaled sharply and turned away, fingers tightening around my phone. "I haven't decided yet," I said, my voice even, refusing to give him the satisfaction of an immediate answer.Leon hummed low in his throat, stepping closer. "Decide carefully, Margarette."I refused to face him, but I could feel the warmth of his body behind me. The air between us buzzed with unspoken words, unsatisfied tension. Then, without another word, he turned and walked away.***Later that evening, I sat curled up on the couch, scrolling through my phone, staring at Noah’s message.Drinks sometime? To catch up. No pressure. It should have been s

The morning sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, but its warmth did little to ease the tension curling in my stomach. Elise’s message played over and over in my mind.Meet me at noon. My place. No one else.Leon sat across from me, fingers drumming against the table as he studied the message. He was too quiet. That meant he was already three steps ahead, calculating risks, preparing for anything.Dorian whistled from where he lounged on the couch, sipping his coffee like this was just another casual morning. “So, we’re going or not?”I shot him a glare before turning back to Leon. “What do you think?”Leon leaned back in his chair, considering. “It’s suspicious. Either she’s truly desperate, or she wants us walking into something.”I crossed my arms. “I think we should go.”His gaze flickered to me, sharp and assessing. “If we do, we’re doing it my way.”I nodded. “Fine.”Leon studied me a second longer, then let out a low sigh. “Then let’s get moving.”

The night breeze rolled over the pier, carrying the scent of salt and damp wood. Elise had disappeared into the fog, but the weight of her decision lingered in the air. Leon stood beside me, silent, his hands shoved into the pockets of his coat.“She’s scared,” I murmured.Leon let out a low hum. “Good. Fear makes people careful.”I glanced at him. “And desperate.”He met my gaze, his dark eyes unreadable. “Desperation is useful. If she’s smart, she’ll realize we’re offering her an out before everything collapses.”I let out a slow breath, my mind racing. “And if she’s not?”Leon’s jaw tightened. “Then we make sure she doesn’t get in our way.”There was a finality in his tone that sent a chill down my spine. He wasn’t a man who took risks lightly. He weighed every move, calculated every possibility. It was why I trusted him, even when the path ahead was uncertain.Dorian, who had been leaning against a lamppost, pushed off and stretched lazily. “Well, that was fun. I say we celebrate.
