She felt a bit nervous as she walked into the house that smelt nothing short of wealth. From the doorstep alone, she could tell the WELCOME footmat would cost more than she's ever earned.
A fruity fragrance hit her nose, the air conditioner feeling so new to her nostrils. She inhaled deeply and her eyes twinkled as they beheld the beauty before them. The luxurious sitting room was the prettiest she had ever seen.
There was a woman on one of the couches, holding a small cup that steamed with what seemed to be coffee. She was adorned in a short black dress with jewelries blinking on her neck, ears and wrist. And although, she looked older, but she also seemed smart.
"Good morning, ma'am" Stephanie bowed and greeted, guessing she was the grandma.
"Good morning to you. How're you doing?" The sophisticated - looking woman asked, giving Stephanie a head - to - toe stare which she noticed.
"I'm doing just fine, ma'am. Thanks", Stephanie answered a bit anxiously.
She didn't want to sound offensive to her would-be boss. Besides, the woman looked like someone that could lock her up at the snap of her fingers.
"Please, sit", she offered, and with another bow, Stephanie took the seat adjacent to her.
And while the woman supped from her cup, Stephanie ran her eyes round the large room. She noticed a big frame on the wall beside the television - a picture of a young, pretty lady. Could she be the woman's daughter?
"So", the woman dropped her mug beside her. "I heard your name is Stephanie".
"Yes, ma'am", she beamed with smiles.
"And you're here for the job. You're aware you have to be a nanny to my grandkids, right?"
"Yes, ma'am. And that would be a pleasure".
The woman drew a deep breath and next from her coffee.
"So, do you have any experience? Have you worked as one before?" She asked.
"Uh... I've never worked as a nanny before, but I do have an experience because.... I'm a mother and take care of my son a lot", Stephanie responded, her blush rising immediately.
"Oh! You have a son?" The woman couldn't conceal her surprise.
Surely, the lady in front of her looked so young and beautiful, she couldn't believe she was already a mother.
"Yes, ma'am. He's still very young, tho", Stephanie smiled.
The thought of her little boy was always something that could brighten her day.
"Hm. I assume you're married, then?" That was the question that wiped every trace of smile from Stephanie's face.
Her eyes drooped and lowered to the floor as her heart began beating rapidly.
"Uhm..." she fiddled with her nails. "Actually, I am".
The woman could notice the drastic change in her emotions, she could tell something was wrong.
"Are you? You don't sound too sure about that" she inquired.
Stephanie sniffed and looked up at her.
"The truth is - I am still married. But my husband is currently pressing for a divorce",her voice echoed with pain - pain she had been trying to conceal from the moment she walked through the gate.
"A divorce?" The woman mumbled to herself.
She felt like asking more questions concerning the divorce but concluded the lady might not be comfortable with it. Now, she was beginning to doubt if she could let a divorcee work for her grandkids.
There was a round of silence as the woman emptied the last content in her cup.
"Sorry about that", she sighed. "Let's say... you get the job, you would have two options of working from here, or working from home. In clearer terms, you live here with us or you could come very early from home and leave very late at night when the kids would've been asleep. Also, I must warn you that the kids are... quite stubborn and hate the idea of having a nanny. But I sincerely wish they get to accept you".
"You don't have to worry about that, ma'am. I have my way around kids and will make sure they get to accept me", Stephanie assured.
The woman bobbed and leaned back on her chair.
"Their father is mostly busy and away during the day. Same with me. So, your job is to make sure they're safe and have everything they want. You're to prepare them for school, take them there, be responsible for their meals, hygiene - their wellbeing in general. If... you can take the job, your pay will be a thousand dollars per month".
That was the part that trickled Stephanie with excitement. A thousand dollars! If she works for a month or two, that would be enough to move to a different city with her son - just like she wanted! She was definitely taking the job, whether the kids liked it or not.
"Thank you so much, ma'am. I can't wait to begin",she beamed.
She truly couldn't wait.
"Alright, then. The kids should be asleep, I'd have introduced them to you. But it's fine. You may leave now. I'll give you a call when I've made my final decision. Let me have your contact".
"Sure, ma'am".
Stephanie brought out a pen and paper and scribbled down her digits.
"Thank you so much, ma'am. I'll be expecting your call", she said with so much sincerity.
"It's fine. You may leave now",the woman replied and Stephanie stood up with her worn-out bag.
She bowed again before exiting the room.
Outside, she thought of how nice it would be to get the job. A thousand dollars would definitely go a long way for her as moving to a different city would help her forget quickly about Nathan. She could start a new life with her son.
The pain of betrayal nearly visited her chest again, but it got interrupted when Stephanie felt something cold being poured on her. It was poured on her head and trickled down to her dress. What?
She flinched as she looked upward and to her surprise, found two kids at the balcony. One held a cup in her hand and Stephanie didn't need to be told they had spilled the liquid on her - on purpose!
They glared at her with detest. And at that moment, Stephanie realized they were the grandkids.
As Stephanie walked down the lonely path to her old creaky house, she reminisced over her experience at the estate. After the kids spilled the liquid on her, they had glared at her and walked away. She was furious but didn't want to report the incidence to their grandma. So, she just dabbed the little she could and left. She was determined to get the job, no matter what. Hopefully, the grandma calls her. She was still diving in her thoughts, but the moment she hit the path facing her home, her heart sunk into her chest. She stopped walking and tried controlling her pants as she stared at the figure before her house, sitting in the roofed pavement with his face buried in his palms like he was waiting for someone. Every ounce of joy Stephanie had felt in the last few minutes vanished from her the very instance she set her eyes on him - Nathan, the only man she's ever loved. For a moment, she felt like running to give him a hug, but when her memories whispered all the cruel things he
Nathan felt a little muzzy as he pressed the doorbell, his head spinning like it might explode at anytime. He was drowning in trauma and all he wanted at that point was the comfort of his bed. He pressed the doorbell again and just then, the door was opened, her slim figure showing up before him. His heart gave a light leap as he beheld her pretty face - one that looked so calm and innocent. But it didn't mean she couldn't be violent when she wanted to be. Her hair was falling freely over shoulders, her erected nipples pointed at the white singlet she wore on her white short. And the only thing she had on her heart-shaped lips was a colorless lipgloss, lugging the temptation of a kiss. Most times, Nathan wondered if she was prettier than Stephanie. But one thing was for sure - she had captured his heart. "You're back", she said in a mutter, still holding the door. Her round eyes slided between his hands; he could tell she was searching for something. "How did it go? Did she sign t
Stephanie zipped up her bag as she trudged down the creaky staircase, all ready for her first day at work. It was still the early hours of the morning. Hence, she was surprised when and found her mum rushing out of the kitchen with a tray of soup."Oh! Dear, you're done", Mrs Rose said, being all busy with the tiny dining in the middle of the room. "Uhm...good morning, mum. You're making breakfast already?" Stephanie arched her brows. Mrs Rose could tell she looked a little brighter compared to the previous day. After her encounter with Nathan, she had locked herself up for hours and only stepped out after she received the good call from her new boss. "Yes dear. I wanted you to have something to eat before leaving", she replied, placing her hands on the table. "Mum...!" Stephanie rolled her eyes. "You shouldn't have bothered. My new place of work is very rich, I'm sure I'd have gotten something to eat"."I don't care. I wanted to feed you on your first day".With a sigh, Stephani
Stephanie lowered her head as she took more steps away from the frame. Her mind wondered who the strange man in front of her could be. Could he be the CEO she's heard about? He walked down the staircase, his gaze pinned on Stephanie who couldn't stare at him. "What were you doing? Why touching it?" He asked when he stood in front of her. The sweet fragrance from his suit nearly swept Stephanie off her feet, but she still couldn't bring herself to look at him. "Um... I'm sorry about that. I was just...", she ran out of words Somehow, he looked intimidating, and that was probably the reason she couldn't look at him. It was everything about him - his well-built body and intimidating figure. Despite the fact that she couldn't look at him, she could tell everything on him was charming and expensive. Just then, Madame Beatrice came plodding down the staircase and acted surprised upon seeing Rayder standing so close to the new nanny. Could something be wrong?"Rayder?" She called as she
Stephanie's heart summersaulted in her chest as she stared at the couple who stared back at her. Right there, she felt her wounds opening up - wounds that never healed in the first place. It was obvious they were dropping Benedetta's daughter off as they had a little girl in front of them, and it baffled Stephanie how Nathan took pleasure in caring for another woman's child while he left his at home.Benedetta's eyes glinted with guilt as that was her first time meeting face to face with Nathan's ex-wife, although she's seen her pictures and seen her from a distance. Nathan, on the other hand, felt no guilt, but shame."Um...go on now, baby. I'll see you later", Benedetta turned to her daughter, her voice shaking a little."Okay, mummy. Bye". And the little girl left.Etta turned to Nathan and could see the shame on his face. She looked back at Steph
Later in the day, Stephanie went with the driver to get the kids from school. When they returned home, she waited for them to take a shower before serving the meal she had already prepared for lunch.Isabelle and Isadora stared at the meal before them with disgust. "This is too cold. You'll need to heat it up", Isadora rolled her eyes, tossing her plate away. "Mine too", said Isabelle. Stephanie was confused. "I don't think I understand. This food has been the warmer the whole time. How can you tell me it's...""Are you trying to say we're lying?" Isabelle cut her off. "If we say it's too cold, then it's too cold".Stephanie was so close to yanking her hair, but urgh! She knew that could get her in a lot of trouble. She took a deep breath and packed the food away. Few minutes later, she returned with the meal steaming hot and served it back to the kids. But when they took a taste, Isadora was the first to crumple her face up. "Why does this taste so salty?" She took her glass and
A startled gasp cut through from Stephanie's lips as she turned quickly to face Rayder who was still standing at the door. Perplexity was screaming all over her. How was he suddenly home? For how long had he been standing there? Did he overhear all the gibberish she said to his kids? Oh! She was definitely dead! The kids had lowered their heads to the meal they weren't interested in and seemed like they weren't even breathing. Finally, Rayder started walking towards them, his briefcase in his hand. This caused Stephanie to harbour so much fear as she thought he'd confront her about all she had said. How would she explain herself? She had been bullying his kids, there was no redemption for that."G... Good evening, s...sir", she stuttered helplessly, her gaze pinned to the ground. But surprisingly, when Rayder got close enough, he simply walked pass them and took the stairs. The kids sighed with relief, while
Stephanie didn't really have much disturbances with the kids for the rest of the evening. She did every other necessary things and made sure the kids were tucked into bed before attempting to leave."I am so happy you passed your first day here", Madame Beatrice beaned as she walked Stephanie to the door. "I don't need anyone to tell me they gave you so much troubles, but it's amazing how you sailed through it".She had just gotten home and was still dressed in her official outfit and heels."It's nothing. I told you ma'am; I have a son at home. So, I know exactly how to handle such kids" Stephanie answered ecstatically."I see".They stopped walking when they got to the door."Make sure you're safe on your way home. And be early tomorrow, alright?" Madame Beatrice reminded."Of course, ma'am. Goodnight
Rayder's secretary - Candice - was standing behind him and was in utter shock as she also stared at the shattered frame in front of them. No, no. This was bad. Whoever did this...She knew how special that frame was to Rayder and how much he didn't joke with it. Why would anyone ruin it that way? There was no doubt Rayder would be filled with rage. What was she saying? He was already filled with rage.Just then, she heard footsteps and lifted her gaze to the staircase to see a strange lady scurrying down. But she stopped the moment she noticed them. After scolding the kids, Stephanie had spent enough time, crying in the kitchen. When she finally regained her strength and decided to go clear up the mess, she unfortunately met Rayder already there. She stopped walking immediately as fear filled her eyes. Oh, no. Her intentions had been to clean up the mess and leave before anyone woul
Stephanie couldn't believe her eyes as she stared at the shattered glass on the floor. What have they done?"Why did you break it?" She turned to the kids and asked, her voice cracking a bit."Well, what do you think? You should probably be looking for a way to explain yourself to our dad when he gets home" Isabelle sniggered."What? I... I don't understand. You broke the frame, not me", Stephanie was confused."We know we did. But do you really think we plan on revealing ourselves?" Isabelle scoffed."When daddy gets home and finds his favourite frame broken, he might strangle you, or perhaps, lock you up for life. So, if I were you, I'd leave this very instant and never return", Isadora stepped forward."If you chose to live, it'd be better for you. So, just go 'cause we don't want you here".Stephanie's eyes gli
TWO DAYS LATERStephanie was in her worst mood that morning as she walked to the estate. With her hands wrapped across her shoulders, she counted her steps like a person suffering from cold. For the first time since Nathan left her, she felt the impact of the divorce. She felt a slap on her face. Her son was having his sports day at school and they were all expected to come with their dads. Initially, she never wanted to tell Nathan about it. But when Zion kept crying and insisting, she had to give in and give Nathan a call that morning. But to her surprise, it was Etta who took his call. "What do you want?" Etta had asked, sounding surprised and insecured like Stephanie was trying to steal her man away. "This is Nathan's phone. Where is he?" Stephanie had responded. Etta had told her Nathan was not around and insisted Stephanie dropped whatever message she had with her. At first, Stephanie refused. But when she saw that Etta was being stubborn about it, she had to tell her inten
