"Oliver Sung?"
A tall skinny man nodded. He stood up and signalled Pil to follow him. They entered an alley of different old shops. After a 2-minute walk, they reached a small house. As soon as they got inside, Oliver rushed to the kitchen. He took out something from the cupboard over the sink and handed it to Pil. A thick white envelope was given to Oliver. The door closed. In Pil's hand was a black suitcase full of personalized spy devices that Oliver had made for them.Pil rang Kian's number. His call was immediately received. "Everything's ready." Pil smirked. ----------'Oh no!' Mina regretted why she let herself get immersed looking around. She felt stupid. The guy disappeared! She did not know what to do. 'Should I go back now?'But she was eager to know who that guy was and why he met her tutor. She could not help but associate how they actually seemed suspicious when they met at Gangsil with how this narrow street looked like. She shook her head thinking that the guy and her tutor could be gang members who would meet up here. Or possibly, this place was their hideout.'It can't be.' Mina tried to erase her weird assumption. She felt guilty that she judged them easily just because she saw them suspiciously meet last week.'Where am I?' She stepped back.Mina got lost!Mina tried to find her way back. But the more she looked for the old shops and corners she had passed by, the farther she got.A lot of eyes were curiously staring at her. She had no courage to ask any of them because she suddenly felt scared. She just kept walking.'I need to get out of here.' Her fear worsened.Mina thought of using her phone, but eyes were still fixed on her. What if they snatched her phone? Her grandfather would then know the trouble she got into and for sure she would get scolded harshly. She stopped walking when she spotted an old book shop. Without any hesitation, she ran towards the shop believing that it would be a safe place where she could use her phone. When she got inside, her hand instantly covered her mouth in a great shock. It was not a book shop but a men's bar! Fearful hesitation nailed her feet on the floor. She was unable to move. It was a completely new world for her.A decently young and pretty girl in her school uniform suddenly showed up and this amazed the eyes of every man inside the bar. Everyone was looking at her including those women in super tight and short dresses that were revealing so much of their skin. They were sitting intimately close beside the male customers. She closed her eyes and spoke in a shaky voice. "I.. I am s..sorry."Without delay, Mina stepped back and turned to leave when a man appeared behind her."We have a young and beautiful lady here!" He came closer to Mina. He reeked of alcohol and cigarette.Mina began to tremble. When the man tried to grab her by the arm, she alertly kicked his leg and ran outside the bar. The man limped and shouted angrily. "Get her!"Four men inside the bar quickly stood up and rushed outside.-------------Mina was sure she was being chased. Her heart was wildly pounding in her ears. Her fear grew bigger. She had been running as fast as she could. She entered every block hoping to hide from those men who were after her. She kept running without looking back. She had no courage to do so. Just the thought of seeing them running behind her scared her to death. But Mina started to feel exhausted. Her arms, her legs, her knees, her feet. She felt like they would lose strength anytime soon. Her whole body was trembling. Her eyes instantly teared up when she saw a dead end!The last bit of hope left her.Panting and feeling so exhaustedly drained, Mina fell on her knees. No more place to run to.'I'm dead.' Mina closed her eyes in despair and she accepted the frightening consequence of her stupidity and stubbornness. She could not hear anything but her panting and pounding heart. But she was scared to look back. 'Did they lose me?' She desperately hoped. It's still quiet.Mina slowly opened her eyes. She was in a small vacant lot. She looked up. The walls were high. When she felt like the men had already lost her, she cautiously turned her back. She saw no one. She let out a heavy sigh!Still panting, she tried to stand up though her knees felt so weak. She got up slowly. She really wanted to get out of this place. She looked for her bag which fell. She could see it a few steps away from her. She walked slowly to get it. Her hands were still trembling. She bent down to reach for her bag.But as soon as Mina held her bag, she suddenly heard big footsteps walking towards her direction. Her hand fearfully dropped the bag. She fell on her knees again and hopelessly closed her eyes.Someone was already standing in front of her. Mina started to cry. "It's me. Don't be scared." The voice that she just heard, she knew it. It's her tutor's.She hesitatedly opened her tearful eyes. Her tutor bent down to face her closely. "Did you get hurt?"Mina cried more. Big tears came out rushing. She was so scared. Her tutor's presence made her cry like a lost child. The thought of having him near her meant one thing - she's finally safe. She could not stop crying. Heavy tears kept falling.-------------Mina was looking outside the window. She didn't know where they were heading to until the taxi dropped them off in front of a five-story apartment."I can't think of any place. I know you are still shocked and scared right now.""W..Why are we h..here?" Mina looked confusedly uncomfortable."My house is on the rooftop.""H..House?"Kian sighed and walked to the stairs that were attached to the side of the building. Mina did not follow him, she remained standing.Kian turned his back. "Look at you now. Can you go home like that?" Mina's shoes, backpack and uniform were all dirty. Her hair got messy. Her eyes could clearly tell that she had just finished crying intensely. The apartment building was not high but the rooftop could overlook the bright city nights of Hannan. It was because Jeonwu neighborhood was situated higher than the rest of the places in Hannan. It was near the mountains. The rooftop was spacious. A long wire was hanging from both sides. It must be for drying clothes. The house looked small from the outside. No window could be seen, only the door. Beside it was a light post that stood tall. This was the only source of light here. The entire rooftop looked almost empty if not for the small table and three chairs at it.The door opened. Kian came out holding a glass of cold water and folded towels. "Drink this."Mina got it but she looked hesitant to drink the water.Kian hissed. "Don't worry, I won't harm you."She was actually thirsty and quietly drank the water in one gulp.Kian got her bag to dust it off but Mina tried to stop her. "I'll do it, teacher."Though he kept his cool, Mina could see a bit of annoyance on his face. He ignored her and continued dusting off her bag.Mina got another towel to clean her uniform from dust and dirt."I should be angry at you. I must be scolding you right now. But because I know what happened has brought you shock and fear, I will just think it was his fault and not yours."Mina was taken aback. "His fault?"Kian faced her. "What else could be the reason why you ended up at Liang St.? Because of that guy. You followed him, did you?"'I'm screwed.' Mina wanted to disappear at the moment. But Mina tried to appear she had the right to hear an answer. "How did you know I followed that guy--"Mina suddenly stopped asking as she got startled seeing her tutor bend down. Her heart raced crazily. She tried to move her feet away from him but it was too late. He was already cleaning her shoes.Mina's guilt had been eating her up. She felt bad and sorry for causing this kind of mess.Looking at her tutor who was silently cleaning her shoes, she spoke. "I am sorry, teacher. I'm really sorry."Kian stood up. "How are you feeling?"Mina feigned a smile. "I'm okay now."He got her bag and gave it to Mina. "Then let's go."She quickly rose up and followed her tutor."Make sure you always carry the Math book I lent you. So, if you have free time, you can read that and study your lessons. You're terrible in Math." Kian spoke out of the blue."Y..Yes, teacher." Mina responded. She got confused though. 'What's with him?? Did he really have to diss me in this situation?'Kian got his phone while walking downstairs. An activated tracking application was displayed on the screen. His eyes were fixated on it. Current tracked location: L Apartment, JeonwuLast tracked location: #35 Hengxie, Liang St.Kian carefully parked the car in front of the house. Mina looked at her watch. It's past 9 PM.She had been anxiously troubled. She did not know what to reason out why she came home late. Mr. Yoo must be home at this hour.Mina got out of the car first and then her tutor. Her heavy and slow steps could tell she didn't want to get inside. She was sure Mr. Yoo would scold her terribly. When Kian noticed she looked so worried, he walked past her and rang the doorbell for her. Mina felt more nervous. The gate opened automatically. No Ms. Kim showed up. Mina stepped inside but her tutor did not."We're not having class tonight.""W..Why teacher?""I don't think you can focus studying after what happened to you. You better sleep early."'But.. won't you help me explain to my grandfather?' Mina was almost in tears thinking she would face her grandfather alone.Kian left with
Mina's homeroom teacher suddenly appeared behind her tutor."Here, Mr. Park." He escorted Kian to the classroom.'Demo teaching? Here? I mean in our class?' Mina tried to get back to her senses. She hurried inside."He's handsome.""He has a face of an actor.""He's really tall!""Look at him, so charismatic."Compliments of her classmates filled the room. The homeroom teacher was busy directing him what to do. Kian was carefully listening to him.'I know, teacher. You look a lot more handsome and stunning in that formal attire.' Mina admitted.Kian was dressed in all black but his tie was grayish. His hair was neatly done, showing his forehead. Even that forehead looked perfect. It wasn't the first time Mina saw her tutor in that style, but she could not take her eyes off him.Mina's heart was still quivering. Was it because of what's written on that piece of pape
"No one knows me, I mean.. I don't think there are people who will take interest in me. I and my family have never been exposed to the public ever since. So, I don't worry at all." Mina said. There was no hint of fear and worry the way she spoke and looked. Kian thought."The world is full of people who don't have even the slightest conscience to harm others. Aren't you scared?"She avoided his sharp cold stare and looked away. "I think those people you mentioned only harm those who have hurt them."Kian hissed. "Did you hurt your classmates, Jay and his friends and those men at Liang St. that's why they harmed you?"Her tutor slapped her with harsh reality. Mina suddenly remembered the threatening note she had received in school. He was right, whoever wrote that to her was no different from those people Kian had talked about. The bus stopped.-----------Pil was done changing. He's in SkyV
The man instantly took his hands off Mina the moment he heard someone speak. His eyes trembled.Because of the nervousness that had been crippling her, she leaned against the fence and closed her eyes. She sighed deeply. She felt a great relief. From his devilish grin, a panic-like expression crossed the man's face. He then tried to escape by making steps, as if someone behind him was invisible. But the guy, who just spoke, blocked him from leaving. Pil fixed the man's collar with his mocking smile. "Have fun tonight."He gave him enough space to make him leave. Fear hastened his steps, not even lifting his head."He's gone. Go home."Mina hesitated to open her eyes. "Y..Yes, sir. T..Thank you."The guy waited for Mina to make a step but she's still leaning against the fence with her eyes closed."Gangsil isn't a place for a high schooler like you especially when night falls. Remember that."&nbs
The bodyguard nodded. He went back to guarding along with the other men in their black suit who were scattered all over the house.Ms. Kim waved goodbye to Kian and then closed the gate."I didn't know you're that close to my tutor."Ms. Kim's body was struck with great shock hearing that voice. A sudden pause, she gulped. An instant change to her expression and eyes, from uneasiness to her usual kind and bright face. She turned her back.Mina was standing before her, scanning Ms. Kim with her prying eyes."How long have you been standing there?" Ms. Kim asked, concealing her shock in her soft tone."Just now. But I saw you from the window of my room while you were walking with my tutor to the gate."Ms. Kim let out a deep sigh, discreetly. "What brings you here outside?""My tutor left this." In Mina's hand was a book."He just left though. He's still around, I guess
Monday."I'm sorry, teacher." Mina said as she closed her book. They just finished their class."Don't you get tired saying sorry?" Kian asked in his usual seriously cold tone. He remained sitting.Mina kept apologizing to her tutor and she felt bad about it. She frustratedly buried her face on the study table. Though Kian wasn't looking at her, he could see her.Kian closed the book he was reading. "What are you sorry for this time?"There's something in her tutor's tone that made Mina lift her head.'Is he game for a small chat now? He sounds friendly.' She thought to herself.Mina faced her tutor. "I thought you lied to me and my grandfather.""Have you found out what I told Mr. Yoo?"Mina shook her head.He said while putting his book in his bag. "Then why are you sorry?""I still don't know what reason you told my grandfathe
This hell-like dinner had been toying with Mina's emotions. She just felt lighter because of what her tutor had said but her uncle's harsh words were too painful to carry.'Did you really need to bring up my family here? Have you already lost respect for my dad? If my brother's here, he wouldn't allow you to insult our dad like how you did.' Mina had been forcing her tears not to come out.Mr. Yoo rested his wrinkled hands on the table, he felt like his remaining strength had left his body. Gloom fell on his face. But all these sudden changes were unnoticed as his family didn't seem affected by Mr. Joe's disrespectful insult towards his eldest son, Dan. His eyes started to get teary while looking at his sons and their family. The smiles on their faces tightened his heart.'Be strong, Mina.. at least in front of them. Don't let them win by seeing you cry.' Mina kept motivating herself to appear she's totally fine. The old man and Mina
It was only last night when the pain almost killed her inside. But now, she got to recall that moment without getting terribly hurt. All the pain she had felt during that hell-like dinner became her companion that would remind her of that unforgettable moment with her tutor. His comforting words, his warm hands, he himself.. Mina's new source of solace. She got her notebook and lied on the bed. Her eyes beamed, her tutor wrote only 10 questions.'Wait.. What's this??' She could see something. There's a note written at the bottom of the page.'What did I just read?? Am I dreaming??'Mina got up and looked at the mirror. Her face was blushing. She sat down and read the note again.'Your class starts at 9AM, right? Let's eat the cake you got for me. I'll wait for you at the bus stop around 7.'-----------The clock alarmed. It's past 6. She got up and went straight to the bathroom. The wh
Fear, worry, nervousness. They were rushing in. She couldn't go near the almost crushed cars, she's frightened. She rang her dad's number this time. It's ringing. She felt relieved. But he's not picking up the call. She gulped. The ambulance came. The siren was making her feel uneasy. When the police started to make the people distance from where the accident was, Mina could clearly see the two smashed cars from where she was standing. She abandoned her fear and made slow steps forward. Her body froze when her eyes spotted a familiar thing. Her trembling hands rang her mom's number. Her eyes were locked inside the car. The other line was ringing. But her world crumbled when the phone started to blink inside the taxi.Mina felt a tight squeeze around her heart. It's so heavy. Everything around her turned dark. She was still holding her phone, the other line kept ringing. Her eyes, that were only s
For the first time in my life, I felt like someone could finally hear me. That song spoke my unsaid feelings. It was a warm embrace in my cold heart. And that person became my comfort in life, my wife."Dan looked at her. Mina could see her mom's teary eyes. Their mom smiled at their dad. He waved at her.The crowd got deeply moved."That's so sweet!""He's very romantic!""What a beautiful story.""That's heart warming."Mina could hear voices at her back. JP looked at her and whispered. "That's our dad! Cool, isn't he?"Their dad continued talking to the audience."We all go through empty nights and days in our lives when we think that no one's there for us. We all get depressed when we see busy streets and feel like we're left behind because we don't know what to do in our life. But, I'm telling you as someone who has already gone through those rough times, there is always someone who can
Kian glared at her in disbelief. "That book.""Ah-- y..yeah.." A fake laughter from Mina. She wanted to slap her face for that foolishness. And because her tutor's strong presence beside her was making her feel so nervous, she put down the book and locked her phone."Teacher.. what you're thinking is not right, okay?""Why? What am I thinking then?" Kian didn't take his eyes off her.Mina tried hard to look calm but her eyes could not lie, they're avoiding her tutor's. "That.. I was trying to take a photo of you?""That came from you." Kian responded."Because you asked me!"Mina's raised voice startled those students who were near their table, eyes threw glances at them.Kian gave her a warning stare. Mina lowered her head and apologized to her tutor.Kian leaned his head a bit and whispered. "TMI. I have keen eyes. I may not be looking at you but I know w
Before handing the book to Mina, Kian unnoticeably put a tiny tracker inside the hardbound back cover.Kian used this book not to spy her but to protect her from danger. In The Reed Bookshop, at Liang St., at Gangsil, in the abandoned building and just now in The City Square."You're surprised, aren't you?" Mina leaned forward to examine her tutor's reaction."Let's use that." Kian said calmly, as if there's nothing in the back cover. Her proud smile faded. "Good job, Mina.. You should have said that. Is giving compliments hard for you to do, teacher?"Kian took his seat and snatched the book from Mina's hand. "I'm not good in complimenting people. But I always make sure to make up for it."A sudden change on her face, it's glowing again. "So, to make up for not complimenting me for always bringing that book, give me a reward."She leaned more to give her tutor a very intent look, her eyes
"Miss, one more please!""What a beautiful voice!""Your song is healing."Mina could hear praises. 'Oh no! Did they hear me sing? Was it too loud? All I know is I sang quietly.'In front of her were a few people who just heard Mina's sweet voice. Some were sitting on the grass, some were standing.'Are they waiting for me to sing again?' She was flustered.Mina forced a smile. "Umm, I actually don--""Can you sing again, miss?" One guy requested.Because the crowd kept asking her to sing again, Mina decided to play one more song."Hey!!!" An old man shouted as he's walking to where Mina was.She looked at him, confused. She put down her guitar and asked him why."Let's go to the community service center." He told Mina, looking so serious."Community service center?" Mina was still confused."Miss. Don't you know that buskers ar
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday just passed. Kian never showed up on these days. According to Ms. Kim, he asked for a few days leave due to his school work which he needed to finish.'Did he really finish his school work? Or his side job as a gangster? Here I am again, thinking weird things about him. Whatever it is, it's his life. I should mind mine.' Mina thought. The bus stopped, she got off.'I feel great!' Mina's heart was jumping in delight while walking to one of her favorite places. The weather was nice. But it felt nicer that she brought her guitar. It's still early but The City Square was already full of people. The arc that welcomed her to the town center was beautifully decorated with colorful spring flowers. Small fountains along the center made this place a lot cooler as their mists mingled with the spring air.Fancy shops were scattered everywhere. Food stalls were at every corner of the town
It's Jay.Bruises, blood on his face. He's not wearing his school uniform. That bad boy impression when she met him at Hannan Street was completely gone. In her eyes, he looked like a pathetic trash now. She shook her head.Kian kneeled down beside Jay who was lying on the ground. He looked at him with his eyes like laser guns."How could you force Aron to call Mina again? And that was right after I beat you to death? You must have become a lot braver. What did I tell you last time? I can talk to Jessie anytime and convince her to sue you for harassing and trying to drug her. I also talked to other students and they are willing to speak up against you. Is bullying a joke to you???" Kian's rage thundered. Now, everyone looked convinced that Jay deserved to get beaten up."S--s--sir. I w--will s--sto--p now. Re--really. P--please l--let me g--go." Jay begged. Her tutor grabbed his arm then looked at him. "Be sure of t
Mina felt like she was in an intense rollercoaster ride the entire day.Her brother called her. That voice made her miss him more. She encountered another dangerous situation but her tutor showed up again to help her. His sweet embrace, that was such a beautiful danger. And because of her tutor again, she just gained friends. She felt bad for ignoring and not giving Yuri and Dani a chance to explain themselves. They had always tried to apologize and be friends with her, but her hate towards them blinded her.All this time, her tutor had been protecting her. Even though she still wanted to know why he suspiciously met Pil at Gangsil, how he suddenly showed up at Liang St., and why Pil got beaten up in the old building, she convinced and would keep convincing herself to stop getting involved anymore. With her thoughts on her tutor, that beautiful melody suddenly played in her head again. She got the notebook. Thos
No gunshot yet, but the silence was killing her.Without any warning, two hands covered her ears.BAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNG! That deafening gunshot filled the building.Heavy dust dispersed into the air as the big guy aimed his gun at the piled up sacks near the window.A few seconds passed, a man's voice spoke. "You're lucky. Kian forgave you."'Kian? My tutor?' Her eyes were still closed.Hearing her tutor's name gave her a troubled mind. Though she knew she was safe in her tutor's embrace, she could not open her eyes for one unavoidable reason. She's not ready to know who her tutor was. That he was also like them, that he could also do what that big man did to Pil, that he could also beat others to death.'That he can k..kill?'-------------The silence between them was making Mina feel suffocated. Her tutor was driving her home. When Mina had already
