By lunchtime, Valentine had had it up to here. She snatched her cell phone from the counter and dialed up her best friend and confidant Helen. "Hey, Valentine cheer up girl you look sad," says Helen, sounding like a chipper ray of sunshine. "What's going on?" Arnulfo's up to something, Valentine said, no preamble needed, her tone equal parts intrigued and exasperated.

Helen stopped and burst out laughing. "What do you mean? What has he done now?"

"It's not what he's done—it's what he's doing," Valentine continued, pacing the living room as if movement could settle her swirling thoughts. "This morning, he told me he has a surprise for me. He wouldn't tell me what it is and now I cant stop thinking about it, Helen."

Helen's laughter deepened, warm and full of amusement. "You sound like a kid waiting for Christmas morning,

Helen, this is not funny!" she exclaimed, though she couldn't help but smile at the other end. "Arnulfo does not do surprises. What if it's crazy?"

Val reached back against the porch swing so that the swing chains' slow sways could lull her into being calm. Around her, in a soft throw blanket, clung the dark of night- the stars even winking down in approval, for she remained silent and abstract in her considerations. She floated lazy circles round her stomach: her mind surfacing with things she had seen only in their future.Arnulfo had said earlier to her, "I have a surprise for you soon." The surprise left her restless and exhilarated at the same time. He could be plotting anything. The sound of the car that seemed to come along with the quiet hum was her familiar. And Arnulfo's car into the driveway drew her thoughts short. She leapt in her chest, quickened her pulse before she laughed and smoothed her hair. Calm down, Valentine. It probably is nothing unusual. But when Arnulfo got out of the car, she could see the faint glow of excitement in his eyes, even in the dim light of the porch. He carried a small, inconspicuous box i

The night air was crisp and still; however, the coolness of the evening did not disturb Victoria. Standing in her fabulous penthouse with the city's lights stretching miles below her and her reflection blurry in the windowpane, Victoria's perfectly polished nails tapped her champagne flute incessantly. There was anger intertwined with disbelief and confusion swirling around in her brain."Pregnant?" she whispered aloud, the very word was disgusting on her lips. "Valentine is pregnant?"Her assistant, Lydia, stood timidly near the door, uncertain of what to say. "Yes, ma'am," she replied tentatively. "It just arrived today. Confirmations all place it as the offspring of Arnulfo.Victoria's grip on the glass tightened, and for a moment, it seemed as though she might shatter it. Instead, she set it down with deliberate precision, turning to face Lydia with icy eyes. "Of course, it's Arnulfo's. That woman wouldn't be in his orbit otherwise. She's nothing but a lucky charity case.Lydia wi

Warm sunrays poured across the large windowpane of the home Valentine and Arnulfo shared and made golden glint the living area. There on the coffee table, baby names mixed with the color swatches of wedding magazines, venue choice booklets and prenatal vitamins strewn across one another. He sat on the couch and rolled up his sleeves, really inspecting the seating chart very intently. "I had no idea wedding planning could be similar to getting ready for D-day Valentine," he teased, laughing.Valentine smiled quietly from the floor, where she was flipping through some bridal magazines. Neat and efficient she was; her hair was tied back without undue fuss, and her cheeks were blessed with the unmistakable, dyed early-pregnancy hue of cravings. "Tell me about it my love. I swear, finding the right shade for flowers is going to be more difficult than anything I've ever done, Arnulfo."Arnulfo slumped forward, his elbows lying on his knees. "We could always elope you know," he teased, the g

The wedding preparations had all been settled—every detail planned with care, every dream set to materialize. The dress, venue, and flowers were all set. Valentine and Arnulfo would be saying their vows and sealing their love in front of the world in just a few weeks from now. However, today was not about the wedding. Today would tell them the baby's gender.Arnulfo's fingers were interlaced with Valentines as they entered the clinic, their grip warm and reassuring. She glanced up at him, her heart swelling at the sight of his eager smile. He had been there for every step of this journey without once wavering or making her feel alone."Ready for what?" Arnulfo asked his wife, his voice full of anticipation. She laughed quietly, laying her hand over the curve of her belly. "More than anything."Inside the ultrasound room, the dim lights and gentle purr of the machine created a sense of intimate quietness around them. Dr. Horgan smiled at Valentine as he slid onto the exam table, rollin

Long-awaited day, finally the day of their union.A soft-golden sunrise was painted in the colors that prevailed as the wedding bells began to ring; this marked the start of love, battle-tested by trials, sacrifices, and the relentless twists of fate, for Valentine and Arnulfo were marrying this day.The chapel was adorned with cascading white roses and twinkling lights, casting a dreamlike glow over the ceremony. It was intimate yet grand, solemn yet overflowing with love. Only those who truly mattered were present—people who had stood by them through every storm, every triumph, every silent vow of devotion.Valentine always considered her family to be those at the orphanage-the care-takers that raised her, the children whom she had calmed to sleep with their sobs, and the gentle folks who had turned her into a woman. Today, they had come dressed up to the T, their smiles radiant with joy and pride. It caught his breath to see her as he stood before the altar: Arnulfo.Valentine was

Valentine and Arnulfo pushed through the crowd of congratulators into the pavilion where the wedding lunch had been set up. The bride and groom sat at a small table facing everyone else. They likely had a good lunch, but neither of them recalled much of that afternoon. The afternoon passed in a daze. They were there, but could not really appreciate it. Then there were the photographs, the cake, and the obligatory mingling with everyone. All through all this, Jerome felt the presence of his love beside him. He could do nothing more than hold her hand, or put his arm around her, or maybe give her an occasional kiss.As the warm afternoon wears on, Valentine and Arnulfo were swept along in a whirling dervish of tradition: smiling for endless photographs, cutting an exquisite, tower-high wedding cake, and giving warm hugs and kisses to loved ones who have come to commemorate their love.It all seemed like a blur, regardless of how huge the occasion was. The only thing that made Valentine

She was standing afar, her sharp eyes scanning the sea of guests. In a silky black dress, she had drowned herself in the crowds. Her lips smiled at something practiced; her eyes burned with cold, pitiless intent."So this is the life you chose, Arnulfo?" she thought, clutching the stem of a champagne flute. "A life without me?"Around her, the men were positioned strategically in different places on the estate; some mingled with the guests, while others hid in the dimly lit outskirts. All of them waited for the signal. All of them prepared to act.She had waited long enough.Tonight, she would remind Arnulfo of whom he truly belonged to.Valentine leaned into Arnulfo, sighing happily inside the pavilion. What a stormy day it had been, and only now did she feel the heavy weight of their happiness settling in her heart. She closed her eyes, and a shiver tickled her spine.Something was off.Her fingers instinctively tightened over Arnulfo's hand. It was a night for love. A future built on whispered vows and a child waiting to be born. But now, the air was heavy with smoke and gunfire, a mixture of burning wood and spilled champagne bitters mingling with the acrid stench of betrayal.Valentine's breath came in frantic gasps as she ran through the wreckage of what had been her wedding. Her wedding. But all that remained were shattered glasses, overturned tables, and bodies—some of them unmoving. She refused to think about the dead. She refused to think about the way the fire cast eerie shadows over the fallen. All she could think about was Arnulfo. Her eyes searched wildly, heart pounding, until—There. And through the smoke, she saw him. His white dress shirt was covered in crimson stains; fabric torn out where a bullet had grazed along his side. His tuxedo jacket hung in shreds from his shoulders. But he still stood, still fought, his movements fluid and merciless.Valentine's relief didn't last long. For behind him, unperceiv

Arnulfo pulled at his collar. "Remind me again why I'm marrying your daughter?" Valentine raised an eyebrow. "Because you love me?"Arnulfo groaned and threw up his hands dramatically. "Damn. You got me there." Don Victor chuckled. "You'll live, Vegas." Valentine stood in front of the mirror staring at the wedding gown. It was breathtaking-ivory lace, delicate beadwork, a flowing skirt that made her feel like she was floating. But what caught her breath was how Don Victor sat behind her as a reflection. His eyes were misty, his face unreadable. " Papa?" she whispered He clears his throat: "You just look like your mother." A boulder formed in the throat of Valentine. "She'd be proud," he managed to breathe the words out so that his emotions were trembling about. Watering eyes with Valentine, "Really think so?" He bent down and cradled her face. "I know so." And in the blink of an eye, she dissolved in his arms. "I love you, Papa," she whispered. Don Victor's eyes closed, and he tighten

The morning sun trickled through the grand estate's windows, dimming to a golden view of the room in which Valentine sat, carrying her newborn baby, Victoria Elise. She sighed, taking a sip from her tea when suddenly, the doors burst open. Don Victor strode into the room, full of confidence as if he had just decided to move mountains. His voice boomed across the room."Well, Valentine, mi hija, it's off again. This time, we're getting married."Valentine nearly gagged on her tea. "What?" she blinked at him, wondering if her father had finally lost it.Don Victor gave her a look of annoyance, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "You and Arnulfo. Another wedding. A proper one. A wedding that will be remembered for generations!"Valentine opened her mouth, then closed it. “But we’re already married!”Her father waved a dismissive hand. "That wasn't a wedding. That was a disaster! Do you call being shot at, running for your life, and your sister trying to kill you a wedding

Arnulfo looked at the scene. His heart was heavy but not hollow. This was the man he had been fighting for—the man who once tried to kill him. Yet today, Don Victor was merely a father holding onto his final opportunity for redemption. Arnulfo stretched out, his gaze unyielding. To this, Don Victor displayed an expression that was unreadable. Neither spoke for some time. Then, among all the men standing there, the motion of Arnulfo's hands reached out towards him. It was a challenge, a gesture of peace offering, a guarantee. Don Victor held Valentine next to him, frozen. Then, in his slow drag, he took an indrawn breath and clasped Arnulfo's hand in return. Their grips were tight—not against foes—but two men who had seen each other enough to know for far too long. Two men whose pasts would contradict themselves yet could feel the same love, a love more ample for Valentine. “Take care of her,” muttered Don Victor so low that only a few words' meanings might be gathered. The smooth si

Then Don Victor wanted to patch things up with Valentine, so he approached her again. "Valentine, you are my only living daughter. I hope you can forgive your father for not knowing you. I tried to search for your mom, and lately, I found the truth. Please, Valentine, my dear, forgive your dad." Tears filled Valentine's eyes. "But how can you forgive me? For killing Victoria, my only sister?Don Victor shivered. "Because I failed you first."Her breath hitched."You grew up alone," he went on, his voice thick with remorse. "You suffered alone. If I'd been there-if I'd known-you would never have had to fight for your life in the first place."He touched her hands, his fingers digging into hers. "So if you can do in your heart forgive me then I—" His voice broke. "Then I'll spend the rest of my days proving to you that I'm worthy to be your father."Valentine watched him as if studying every feature on his face for one sign of lies. Every mark of the brutal Don Victor that she knew seem

A very trusted man of Don Victor arrived at the hospital when the sun was barely rising. His face was serious, though his body was stiff with unspoken words. Valentine sat on a chair by the window; Arnulfo rested beside her. His wounds healed considerably, though he still needed to recover more time. She heard the footsteps turn. She saw the man. Her heart fell. There was something about him, and she felt her chest constrict."Señora Vegas," he said, respectful but low. "I come on behalf of Don Victor."Valentine stiffened, her fingers going instinctively to grab at the material of her dress. "What is it?" she asked sharply. The man took a deep breath before his eyes met hers. "It's about Victoria."Her heart stopped."Today is her final interment," he said. "Don Victor wanted you to know. He hopes you will come… to send your sister off."A lance shot through Valentine's chest. She gasped and felt her fingers begin to quiver. Her sister.Victoria was her sister. And she had murdered h

There on the veranda of his estate, Arnulfo sat sipping the sweet scent of a breeze carrying wet earth. He had healed the wound, and though the marks both on body and heart remain, he blew out slowly as he rested one hand over where the bullet tried to take him from this life. Nearly from Valentine and the child she had inside her womb. His tranquility was only temporary. The stillness shattered with the heavy sound of his steps. He need not turn around to know who he was but the heavy-laden air that felt fraught with tension and something else, deep within—it was something left unsaid.Don Victor. The older man stood behind him, a storm rolling in behind him. Whatever words were being said, his silence was saying louder than they ever could.Arnulfo straightened himself but did not turn. "I was expecting you.“Is that so?” Don Victor’s voice was gravelly, lined with years of authority. Years of power. But beneath it was something else—grief, perhaps. Or anger. “Then you know why I’m

Dark eyes met his; something she had never seen in him before; regret, pain, a sadness so deep that there weren't enough words to account for it. They were both silent for what felt like an eternity. And then, after the great long silence,he spoke."Valentina," he said, his voice rough, unsteady. She flinched. She hated it when he said that. That wasn't his name for her. Not today. Not ever before. Her fists were curled tight at her sides. "Don't say that."He exhaled, nodding slightly. "I… I understand." His voice cracked, but he went on speaking. "I don't expect forgiveness. I don't even expect you to look at me without hatred. But I need you to know—I never knew. If I had—She laughed, the laugh sharp, bitter. "If you'd known? What, Don Victor? Would it have been any different? Would you have come to find me? Raised me?" Her voice cracked as she took a step closer, the burning eyes intense. "Or just another soldier in your empire? His face contorted into a grimace as if she slap

The door shut with a soft click behind Don Victor, and silence swallowed the hospital room. The revelation was like a boulder, suffocating Valentine's chest. She could hardly believe it.Victoria. her sister.Don Victor. her father. It felt like a bad joke on truth.Arnulfo grasped her hands in a tight grip but a gentle one as he said worriedly, "Valentine, speak to me.".She shuddered, drawing an involuntary breath into her lungs. Her fingers were clutching him hard. "I don't know what to say my love," she whispered. "I don't know how to feel,Arnulfo."Arnulfo touched her cheek and raised her chin. "Then don't make yourself understand everything right now," he said, soft. "Just breathe."Breathe.How was she supposed to breathe when her entire world had just been turned inside out?She forced her hands free from his hold, wrapped them around her body to hug herself, and started pacing the room. "All this time," she said shaking her head in disbelief. "I thought I was alone. I thought

The door opened slowly, and Don Victor entered.Valentine's head snapped up. Her eyes were red and puffy. "What do you want?" she croaked.Don Victor's eyes softened, but his face remained unreadable. "To talk.""There is nothing to talk about."Don Victor took another step inside. "There's everything to talk about."Valentine shook her head, turning away. "You can't come out of the woodwork now and pretend you care about me."Don Victor took a breath. "I always cared."She laughed, and the sound was bitter. "Liar.""I didn't know about you," Don Victor said. "If I had—""If you had known," Valentine cut him off, her voice shaking with anger, "what? You would have raised me in your world?
