Lucas’s pov
I walked into my office in a rush, impatience thrumming through my veins. Jason better have a damn good reason for summoning me here on a weekend.
"This better be important," I barked as I flung open the door with rather more force than necessary. "What couldn't possibly wait until Monday?"
Jason glanced up calmly from where he was shuffling through paperwork at his desk, utterly unfazed by my brusque entrance. "My apologies, Mr. Anderson , I didn't realize it was still the weekend for you."
I opened my mouth to fire off a scathing retort when his words properly registered. With a huff, I raked a hand through my hair and forced myself to take a steadying breath. Jason didn't deserve the brunt of my foul mood.
"You're right, you're right. I'm sorry," I said, the lingering high from my encounter with Claire slowly ebbing. "It's just been an...eventful morning. What's this all about?"
Jason regarded me with knowing eyes, one brow quirked. "I could ask you the same. You're not normally so ill-tempered on a weekend unless something major happened." A wry smile played at the corners of his mouth. "Did you get lucky with some floozy and now you're feeling guilty?"
Blunt as always. I rolled my eyes but couldn't quite suppress my own grin as I settled into the chair across from him. "Believe it or not, it's quite the opposite of that. I, uh...ran into an old friend this morning. Someone I have very strong feelings for."
Jason's expression took on a slightly mocking edge. "The great Lucas Anderson has feelings? For a woman? Alert the presses."
"Oh, can it," I shot back with no real heat. "You know damn well I'm not the heartless playboy everyone makes me out to be."
"Could've fooled me with your endless parade of arm candy and one-night stands." Jason shrugged one shoulder unapologetically. "But hey, I'm happy to be proved wrong if this 'friend' of yours has you this riled up already."
A ghost of a smile played across my lips as unbidden thoughts of Claire crept back in - her warm, honeyed skin beneath my roving hands, the delicious little noises she made as we moved together, her face awash with pleasure as I brought her to the dizzying edge over and over...
"Believe me, this woman is worth getting 'riled up' over," I murmured, unable to keep the hint of reverence from my tone. "Just seeing her again after all this time, it was like..." I trailed off, grasping for the words. "Like the universe clicked back into place, you know? Like she's the missing piece I've been searching for without even realizing it."
Jason's brows climbed nearly to his hairline as he regarded me, stunned into rare silence. "Well, damn. She must be one hell of a special lady to have you waxing so poetic, Romeo."
"The most incredible woman I've ever met," I agreed fervently. A thought occurred to me and I narrowed my eyes at him. "Wait, you don't think setting up a romantic dinner would be too much too fast, do you? I want to sweep her off her feet properly this time."
"Are you kidding?" Jason let out a bark of laughter, shaking his head in disbelief. "If I were her, I'd be put off by anything less from an Anderson man. Go all out - candlelight, roses, the whole nine yards. Romance the hell out of her and she'll be melting into a puddle at your feet before the night is through."
Chuckling ruefully, I couldn't argue his logic. "Fair point. A dinner date it is, then."
I faltered suddenly, the earlier jumble of emotions crashing back in like a wave. Confusion and uncertainty warred with genuine hope and affection in my chest as I thought about Claire and her son. That little boy... God, he looked so much like me. What were the chances?
"There's something else too, Jace," I admitted, expelling a slow breath. "I met Claire's son this morning. Brian. And I can't shake this gut feeling that he might be...mine."
Jason's dark eyes widened comically. "No way. Are you serious? How old is the kid?"
"Five," I replied tightly, anxiety knotting my stomach. "Five years old, which matches up with when Claire and I were..."
I trailed off again, shaking my head. Claire hadn't outright confirmed anything, evading my questions with a skill that both impressed and frustrated me. But those big brown eyes, that impish little grin - how could a child look so eerily like me without actually sharing my DNA?
Jason seemed to read the tumult raging within me plain as day on my face. Reaching over, he gripped my forearm firmly. "Hey, man. I'll get right on running a background check on this Claire chick, okay? Find out everything there is to know, dig up any past relationships or circumstances around when she had the kid. Whatever you need to put your mind at ease."
I searched his face woodenly for a long moment before blowing out a harsh breath. Jason knew me better than anyone. He was the closest thing I had to flesh and blood family in this world. If anyone could get to the bottom of this, it was him.
"Thanks, Jace. I'd really appreciate that." I squeezed his arm gratefully before allowing a faint smirk to quirk my lips. "So should I have legal start drafting up adoption papers just in case the little guy is mine?"
He snorted indelicately, swatting my chest in a friendly jab. "How about we make sure your 'friend' is down for committing herself before you go getting ahead of yourself, yeah? One thing at a time, Casanova."
The knot in my chest loosened somewhat at his easy teasing. Whatever this situation with Claire and Brian entailed, at least I wouldn't be facing it alone. I had Jason in my corner to help see me through.
With a silent nod, I settled in beside him and we turned our attention to the stack of files and reports awaiting us. After a few minutes of scanning figures and statistics in companionable quiet, I spoke up again.
"Better make sure to reserve us a private table at the best hotel in town for tonight too. I want to start our date off with the full royal treatment."
Jason's loud guffaw rang out, echoing through the office as he reached for the phone without a second thought. "Already three steps ahead of you, boss. Can't have Casanova dropping the ball on the most important night of his life so far."
I watched him affectionately as he started dialing, warmth blooming in my chest. Whatever the coming days had in store for me, at least I wouldn't be facing it alone. I had my best friend, my brother in all but blood, there to back me up and keep me grounded as I chased after the missing pieces of my life that were finally so close I could taste them.
With renewed determination, I attacked the spreadsheets and documents laid out before me with vigor. Time to get this busy work handled so I could focus all my efforts on the single most important mission of my life thus far - winning over Claire and claiming my family, once and for all.
By the time Jason and I wrapped up our work for the day, I was practically vibrating with anxious energy. After pouring over files and projections for hours, all I could think about was Claire and our impending dinner date.
Unable to resist, I pulled out my phone and thumbed out a quick text to her number.
"Hard at work but can't stop thinking about seeing you tonight. I'm counting down the minutes."
I stared at the words for a long moment before hitting send decisively. Almost immediately, I felt a pang of doubt twist in my gut. Was that too forward? Too eager? The last thing I wanted was to come across as some lovesick sap and scare her off.
"Dude, relax." Jason's amused voice cut through my anxious musings. "You look like you're about to have an aneurysm over there."
I shot him a halfhearted glare, thumbing furiously at my phone screen as my message failed to show as 'read.' "She's not answering. What if she got cold feet about tonight?"
"Then she's an idiot, which we already knew," he deadpanned, rolling his eyes good-naturedly. "But somehow I doubt it. Any woman would be lucky to have your charming company for an evening, even if you are a gigantic cornball."
Shaking my head ruefully, I let out a long, slow breath in an attempt to steady my rioting nerves. "I think I'm more nervous about this date than any other I've ever been on, if you can believe it."
"Oh, I believe it," Jason assured me with a faint chuckle. "You've got it bad for this chick, Anderson . I haven't seen you worked up over a girl like this in...well, ever."
"That's because Claire is different. Special," I said simply, tucking my phone away defeatedly. "She's not just another fling or pretty face. She's... God, I don't even know how to put it into words. But I'm sure as hell not messing this up like I did the first time."
"Lover boy." Jason rose fluidly from his chair, clapping me firmly on the shoulder. "No more sitting around moping, then. I made those dinner reservations at the Delmonte like you asked, a private table on the terrace with all the romantic trimmings. No more overthinking, just go get ready to sweep her off her feet for real this time."
I eyed him with a wry twist of my lips as I levered myself to standing as well. "You got a real sentimental streak, you know that Jace? You're starting to sound as lovestruck as I am."
"Yeah, yeah, don't get used to it," he shot back gruffly, though his eyes danced with mirth. "I'll be back to roasting you like a pig over the fire by morning, lover boy. Now get moving before you miss your window."
With a salute and a grin, I took my leave, practically floating on cloud nine as I headed for home and the promise of an evening spent basking in Claire's intoxicating presence. My stride was light, my heart thrumming with renewed vigor in my chest.
She would see tonight, without a shadow of a doubt, that I was all in. No more wasted opportunities, no more games or walls. Just me, laying it all on the line for her and for the little boy who could very well be the biggest prize of all.
After a brisk, almost giddy shower, I stood before my closet and let my hands roam over the racks of designer suits and tuxedos. Only the best would do for tonight. This was it - my moment to show Claire that I was a new man, mature and self-assured and ready to go all in. The stakes had never been higher, but neither had the prospective reward.
Finally, I settled on an impeccably tailored slate gray suit, the fabric soft as sin and the cut accentuating my lean build to perfection. A crisp white dress shirt, a paisley-printed tie in shades of silver and navy, and a pair of burnished leather oxfords completed the look. A single spritz of my signature cologne, a quick comb-through of my hair, and I was ready to go.
I took a deep, steadying breath as I caught my reflection in the mirror, giving myself one last critical once-over. Not too shabby, if I did say so myself. I hoped Claire appreciated the effort.
When I arrived at the hotel, the valet moved to open my door before I smoothly waved him off. I wanted no distractions, no extra hands coming between me and this moment. As I strode through the lobby and out onto the terrace, the low evening sun spilled buttery warmth across the floor.
And then I saw her. Claire, a vision in a fitted sundress the color of ripe raspberries, auburn hair falling in lush waves around her glowing face. She looked utterly ethereal and I momentarily forgot how to breathe.
When her eyes lighted on me, those kissable lips curved into a smile so radiant it made my knees go weak. She rose to greet me as I neared the table and suddenly I tasted the future, sweet and tantalizing, on the air between us.
No matter how my life had played out until now - the triumphs, the losses, the heartaches - it all paled in insignificance beside this one crystallized instant. This woman, standing before me in this perfect sliver of time and space, was my destiny. My heart and soul knew it beyond all rationality or reason.
Claire was home. She'd always been home.
And tonight, I would walk through that door she'd cracked open for me and claim what was mine - or die trying. There would be no more holding back, no more fear or doubt. Only forward movement toward a future I could practically taste.
As I closed the distance between us, I couldn't stop the beaming smile from splitting my face.
"Claire," I breathed out reverently. "You look..." I trailed off, drinking in her radiance helplessly. "Wow. Just...wow."
She ducked her head a little in that demure way I recalled so vividly, but her smile only brightened further. "You don't clean up too bad yourself there, city boy," she teased lightly.
And just like that, the tension bled away, leaving only warmth and light and promise in its wake.
Here and now, in this perfect moment where everything narrowed down to just the two of us? Yeah, this was exactly where I was meant to be.
Claire’s povAfter Lucas left my office, I couldn't seem to wipe the smile from my face or the delicious ache from between my thighs. Just being near him again, drinking in his masculine presence, the memories came flooding back in vivid detail. The way he looked the first night we met, ruggedly handsome in that perfectly tailored suit, wisps of dark hair falling over his forehead as sweat beaded there from the heat of the crowded club. The potent intensity in those brandy-colored eyes when they met mine from across the room. The way his muscular frame moved with raw, predatory grace as he approached, making a beeline straight for me through the throngs of people. That night had been electric, charged with chemistry so palpable I could all but taste it on the air. Just like today when he pulled me into his arms and claimed my lips in that searing, breath-stealing kiss. God, how did he still make me feel like a silly, love-struck girl with just his presence alone?I was only faintly a
Lucas’s pov I watched Claire walk into the cafe, and my heart skipped a beat. Her radiant smile lit up the room, and those deep brown eyes seemed to peer into my very soul. As she approached our table, I rose to greet her, captivated by her effortless beauty."Wow you look amazing Claire," I said, unable to hide the grin spreading across my face. "I hope you don't mind, but I've taken the liberty of ordering for us already. Please, have a seat."She obliged, settling into the chair across from me. "Why, thank you, Lucas. That's very kind of you." The waiter arrived shortly after, placing our meals before us. Claire's eyes widened with delight at the sight of the delectable spread. As we began to eat, I couldn't resist the urge to learn more about this enchanting woman."So, Claire," I began, setting down my fork. "If you don't mind me asking, have you had any serious relationships since... Well, since that night we met?"A slight blush crept into her cheeks, and she averted her gaze
Claire’s povMy feet pounded against the pavement as I ran, tears blurring my vision. The ache in my chest felt like a gaping wound, one that wouldn't stop bleeding no matter how hard I pressed against it.How could Lucas do this to me? After everything we'd been through together, how could he have another woman waiting in the wings? A fiancée, no less? The betrayal cut deeper than any knife.Part of me didn't want to believe Chloe's nasty words. Lucas had seemed so sincere, so vulnerable when he asked about my relationships. There was a tenderness in his eyes that made me think, just maybe, he still cared. But then that ring appeared, glittering like a poisonous viper poised to strike. The denial on Lucas's face couldn't erase the sting of seeing such blatant proof of his deceit. My mind spun with a whirlwind of doubts and insecurities.Did he ever really love me at all, or had it all been a game, a ploy to get close for some nefarious reason? The thought made me shudder, my heart g
Claire’s povI went past Anna into the outer office. My stomach felt tied up in knots. And there she was - Chloe, glaring at me with clear hatred. Her lips curled into a mean smile as I came closer."You," she spit out, venom in her voice. "I don't know what dirty little thing you think you have with Lucas, but it ends now."I felt mad at her demeaning tone, anger burning hot in my chest. "I don't think that's any of your business, Chloe."She laughed in a mocking way. "Of course it's my business. Can you imagine, a high-class billionaire like Lucas being with a low-life, poor girl like you? It's disgusting, not to mention impossible." The cruel words cut right through me, bringing up every insecure feeling I tried to bury. I was suddenly very aware of my modest office, my ill-fitting jacket, my bare ring finger.A tremor went through me, but I fought against it, gathering up my last bit of boldness. I looked straight at Chloe, mouth set in a hard line. "Well, it seems Lucas saw so
Chloe's POVI stormed out of Nova Designs, tears streaming down my face. Humiliated. Betrayed. How could Lucas treat me this way? Over some nobody like Claire? My vision blurred as I stumbled into the backseat of the car waiting for me. "Home, now," I choked out to the driver, not even bothering to wipe my eyes. Let him see my pain. Let the whole damn world know. The ride passed in a daze, the city lights smearing together through my tears. Before I knew it, we pulled up to the sprawling mansion I called home. I practically fell out of the car, my heels wobbling on the cobblestone drive.Somehow, I made it inside, the heavy door slamming shut behind me with a resounding thud. And there in the grand foyer stood Grandpa, his weathered face etched with concern."Chloe, darling, what's wrong?" He rushed over, age-spotted hands reaching for my shoulders. "You're crying..."A fresh wave of sobs wracked my body. I collapsed into his arms, burying my face against his suited chest. "Oh Grand
Lucas's POVThe instant Chloe fled, I pulled Claire into my arms, holding her like she was the most precious thing in the world. In that moment, she was. My heart pounded as I breathed in her sweet scent, relishing the warmth of her body against mine."I'm so sorry, Claire," I murmured into her hair. "I promise, I won't let anything like this happen again. No one will ever take you away from me."She trembled slightly in my embrace, and I tightened my hold, willing her to feel safe and cherished. To know that I would move heaven and earth to protect her.We stood there, lost in each other, the rest of Nova Designs fading away. It was like we were the only two people in the world. Nothing else mattered but the feel of Claire in my arms."Ma'am?" A hesitant voice shattered the spell. "You have a call..."Claire and I sprang apart as if scalded. My face heated as I took in the wide eyes of Claire's assistant, Anna. Along with the curious stares of the other employees."It's the manager f
Claire's POVMy heart raced as Lucas pulled me close, his words washing over me like a soothing balm. "I promise, I won't let anything like this happen again. No one will ever take you away from me."I melted into his embrace, letting his strength steady me. In that perfect moment, I almost believed everything would be alright. That we could weather any storm, as long as we had each other.Reality intruded all too soon in the form of my assistant, Anna. "Ma'am? You have a call..."Lucas and I jumped apart, heat flooding my cheeks as I felt the curious eyes of my staff on us. I smoothed my skirt with shaking hands, trying to regain some semblance of professionalism. After a few more awkward exchanges and lingering looks, Lucas and I retreated to my office. The click of the door shutting behind us sounded loud in the charged silence."So," I began, busying myself with straightening files on my desk. "When would you like me to start on your design?" Lucas's fingers caught my chin, gent
Lucas's POVI walked into my house, my mind still filled with thoughts of Claire. Her smile, her laugh, the way she felt in my arms. God, I missed her already and it had only been an hour since I left her office. My fingers itched to call her, just to hear her voice again.I pulled out my phone, ready to dial, when a sharp voice cut through the quiet. "And what the hell did you do to Chloe?"I nearly jumped out of my skin, whirling to find my mother perched on the couch, arms crossed and eyes cold. "Jesus, Mom! You scared me."She stood, mouth pinched tight. "Answer the question, Lucas. What did you do?"I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "Look, Chloe needs to accept that she and I were never going to work. We're just not right for each other."Mom's face reddened. "How dare you say that? Have you lost your mind?"Frustration filled me, hot and sharp. I was so tired of this same old argument. "Enough, Mom. I'm not marrying Chloe and that's final. The sooner you accept that, the
CLAIRE'S POVI was still in shock, trying to recover from Chloe's looks. Her eyes were worse than that of a killer. When she stared at me I almost fell to the ground. My heart raced for seconds before Lucas gave me a warm hug.I don't know what to do anymore. I was still confused about everything even when Lucas told me to go home.I found myself several times talking about the whole issue.“Wait…” I halted my car and leaned backwards with a sigh.“Am I falling for Lucas again? I mean, I fought this feeling for months, and now, here it is all burning like it's a new love.” I sighed.I started my car recklessly without looking behind. The trailer from behind horned like they were about to fall into the gutter “What is going…. Oh shit!” I was quick enough to put my car to the side.“You piece of shit, watch where you are going.” The passenger shouted through the window.I held my chest from the shock. I hope I don't die before I get back home.I checked my back before moving my vehicle
LUCAS POVThe whole scene wasn't clear to me enough.I needed an explanation for all the shit that was happening. I mean, Dad would just sit there and watch these people lie against me.It is a new day and I expect everyone in the house to forget about everything that happened. I don't see myself forgetting about it very soon but I wish my parents would forget about it immediately.“I have to get to work.” I sighed. My head is not in a good state to go to work. I had stayed away from work, trying to prove some stupid points to people. My father had been silent since the day that issue was addressed. I know very well that he would talk about that, he just needs time and something to remind him of it.I got up from the bed to the kitchen as tired as I was. I could barely think of something to say to anyone.“Good morning, mom.” I greeted her with a low tone. She snubbed and continued with what she had to do. My strength wasn't enough to greet her twice or ask what the matter was.I assu
CHLOE'S POVMy mom was my savior, but that didn't last for long.I had to defend myself at some point and I had to follow my mother's rules."Let the victim defend herself." When Lucas said that, my heart sank.I was shivering already, the man wasn't frightening but his looks and body movements says it all.I don't know how observant he was but I had to be careful so that he doesn't detect the lie. After the whole shouts and screams and argument. The father came to a conclusion that didn't favour Lucas. He was annoyed at this but his father...? He is the same to everyone including his sons.Lucas didn't give up, he shouted at us and did whatever he wanted but our decision stood firm."Before I leave, this is to remind you that if you don't accept my daughter after being a traitor to her...I will call the police into this case and her father..." My mom scoffed."You wouldn't love to see his madness here." With these words we walked out.I could tell that Lucas was mad. He kept stutte
LUCAS POVIt was a pleasure to see Claire. I mean, I didn't expect to see her, but here she was anyway. She looked like one who had been running a helter-skelter to look for me. Chloe's mother made a threatening Sentence that made her almost lose control. I don't see any reason why she should be Afraid."Go home," I instructed her and I made sure she drove away before I joined them in my house. "Who do we have here?" My mother came out to welcome her supposed daughter."Hold those greetings to yourself." Chloe's mother interrupted. My mom stood there shocked; She was probably trying to process why she would act that way."You might want to have a seat mom," I said to her,I fell on the sofa and took a deep breath. "Mom, where's dad?" I asked while looking around.I found him coming downstairs."What is going on here?" My dad stepped inNow I was certain the so-called meeting should start; at least I have someone who doesn't support them in any way."Chloe came over." Her Mol pulled
CLAIRE'S POVI don't know how things were going with Lucas and that fool. I lost concentration at work, especially when he came to me in the morning and asked where I found her.He was so impatient that before I could get out of my office to meet him he was gone."Ma'am, the files you requested are here." One of the new workers said to me, I just kept staring at the papers without having in mind what I wanted to do with it."Ma'am, we have to leave with this immediately, so please, I would need you to finish with it...." I interrupted her before she finished speaking."Just leave," I said to her,"Ma'am?""Am I stuttering? I said you should leave." I raised my voice at her.I wasn't comfortable with that after some minutes but I didn't have a choice."Shit! What is going on with me?" I hit the table in anger. There was no way I would have to leave the company papers unsigned. Even when I shouted at the lady, I knew that I couldn't deny my work. I still have to do itI began with the
CHLOE'S POVI woke up with a severe headache. My head began to spin, I could barely think. My eyes were heavy, and my visions were blurry. I tried to get up but my pounding headache kept me back on the floor."Argh." I groaned. The pain was unbearable.I was in chains, my hands were tied to my back."What's happening?" I struggled to get myself free and that's when I noticed I was knocked out."What the fuck is happening?" I shouted. It took minutes before I could see clearly, Lucas was standing right in front of me."You are awake scum?" He asked. What the hell was going on? I was pissed hearing that he had to call me that."What....what do you mean by scum?" I asked him, annoyed."Are you done playing with your little whores like you?" He resigned.I didn't even get a clue of why he reigned insults at me. "What are you talking about?" I struggle to sit upright."Can you recall the last place you were?" He asked. He squatted and faced me.I thought about it, so hard to remember wh
LUCAS POVThe message sent a shock to my whole body; I couldn't move for the next few seconds that passed."Chloe?" I found myself repeating the words. I put the phone back into my pocket and looked around. I found my mom staring at me through the window."Your daughter is back, and you have to start praying for her, or you might not see her the same," I muttered and got back into the car. I drove away in anger. At first, I planned to meet Claire, but after getting the massage, I had to change the plans."I hope not to find you anywhere." I gnashed my teeth. This message was sent to me by Claire. It's early morning, and she will probably be heading for work; I hope she arrives there safely. My doubts were too much for me to ignore; I had to call you to find out what was going on."Will she ever pick up?" I threw the phone on the passenger seat.I was close to the company when she finally picked up the call."Finally." I sighed."Hel..." She didn't let me complete the greetings befo
CHLOE'S POVI could not get out of the anger when I saw Lucas and Brian together. I felt like I should kill him off at once, I was fucking annoyed. There was no way I would have Lucas' attention if he was getting close to that brat. "They are getting on my nerves too many times, and I would not hesitate to teach them a lesson that they haven't learnt in a while," I muttered.I hid until they had passed and I watched him drive away. They looked so much like a family."Who knows where the bastard of a child came from?" I scoffed.I got back home, hitting everything that came my way. I could not think straight. I felt my blood pumping so hot like it was going to come out the next minute."I hate you, Lucas," I screamed.I hope my neighbours don't think I'm mad because this was the most unbearable part of it."For all the things I've done, you still don't think about that. You always find your way back to her." I crumbled the can that was in my hands."I should have ended this when I had
CLAIRE'S POVI had a fun time interviewing the girl. She was such a cool and nice girl, to be honest.Just like the first time, whenever she enters I feel strange. Not in a bad way but in a way that I've found someone to help me.I was fond of her already. "She is such a good-looking girl," I said to myself anytime I remember her."Mom, are you leaving for work so soon?" Brian asked me.I was about to say yes, but with the look on his face, I had to say the opposite."No baby. I have to stay back and handle some things." I lowered my height to his level and cupped his cheeks. My son was smiling sheepishly already; he found himself falling for the words I had just said. Of course, I expect him to fall."So, Mom, am I going to be involved in what you have to do?" He bent his face to the ground.I know how emotional he is."Don't feel bad about anything. You are my priority and that's why I am staying back." I didn't mean to say that but he needs to hear it."Are you serious mom?" His
