Five Years Later
"Mommy, are you not going to work today?" I could hear my daughter ask while I was sleeping.
I slowly opened my eyes, and there she was, trying to put on her school clothes. A smile forced its way across my lips as I saw the effort she was putting into dressing herself but couldn't.
I glanced at the clock and panicked in shock, "Oh my goodness." I never knew it was already 7:30 a.m."
I instantly jumped out of bed and took her to the restroom for a shower. I had worked so stressfully yesterday that I couldn't wake up early today, as usual, to prepare for work and drive my kid to school.
A few minutes later, I finished bathing her and dressed her quickly before we headed to the garage to go to her school.
"Mommy, remember you promised to take me to the amusement park today after school? Are you still going to fulfill it?" She asked while I was driving.
"Of course, dear. I will," I responded.
"Yay!" She exclaimed in excitement and clapped happily. "Thank you, mommy. I can't wait," she said.
I smiled and caressed her head without taking my eyes off the road.
I had even forgotten about the promise, but thankfully, I have a short time at the office today, so I could make it home on time and still take her to the amusement park.
My daughter Daisy is four years old and just a replica of Zayn, which sometimes makes me sad. This constantly reminded me of him, even though I had determined to forget everything about him because of the pain he made me go through.
Nonetheless, I gave her the name Daisy to always remember my beloved friend Daisy because she's not someone worth forgetting. Although we still speak on the phone and chat, I decided to give my daughter her name because I want her to be a lifetime memory.
She was my backbone then and even now because I would have ended my life then if not for her help.
I smiled victoriously as I recalled my experience so far in the journey of life. The past five years had been hectic and not something worth boasting about.
Honestly, it had been a tough voyage. At some point, I even blamed myself for leaving Bevois Valley district in Southampton, where I live with Daisy, just because I wanted to stop seeing Blake and his new lover.
I thought I could at least get a good-paying job that I could use to fend for myself and my then-unborn baby as soon as I arrived here, but it was the other way around.
I slept in the slump for a whole week before I managed to get a job as a cleaner in one of the local restaurants where I got in contact with my life changer, Mr. Jason, who sponsored me back to college to study digital marketing.
Honestly, I'm very good at digital marketing, even though I didn't study it in college then. It was the course I intended to study back then in college before I went into business administration out of foolishness just because that was Zayn's field of study.
Although I did well in the subject, I wasn't satisfied with working in the field back then in Southampton City.
Throughout my years in college, Mr. Jason was the one providing for me even when I gave birth to my little angel.
However, as fate may have it, two days after I graduated, Mr. Jason employed me as a special digital marketer in Tech Savvy Strategies, which is one of his companies.
So now, I can guarantee more than the basics of myself and my daughter, as I have dedicated myself so much to my work that Tech Savvy Strategies is growing a lot every year because of the project my team and I are developing.
In honesty, seeing the growth of this company gives me great joy because this was the only way I could repay Mr. Jason for his kindness towards me, even though he didn't know anything about me then.
At this point, I realized I'm actually in the best phase of my life. An independent woman, well-resolved with myself as a mother and worker, and loving and caring for myself more than I had ever done.
I don't need to beg any man to stay with me or constantly feel depressed because of his ill-treatment.
Just then, we arrived at my daughter's school, and I steered in and parked at the garage.
"Mommy goodbye. See you in the afternoon," Daisy said as she gave me a deep hug before she hurriedly alighted from the car.
"Alright, honey. Take care of yourself," I responded and watched as she ran to her little friends who came to welcome her.
A contagious smile crept on my lips. At least my daughter is living the life I couldn't live during my childhood.
After a few minutes of staring at them, I sighed as I came back from my thoughts. I ignited the car's engine and steered out. I have to hurry and drive straight to the office because I'm almost late for work.
Thankfully, there wasn't any traffic on the way to the office, so I arrived quicker than expected.
I walked out of the car without delay and walked into the company's facilities, responding to the greetings of my colleagues.
I was wearing a blue business suit that featured a cubed skirt that reached above my knees. A white dress shirt and a blazer at the same color as the skirt. Comfortable heels and my blonde hair fell in a soft cascade down to the middle of my back.
I completed the outfit with a matching blue handbag, adding a touch of professionalism and style to my overall look.
All the staff of this company knew me and treated me very well because I also treated them well. Starting from the cleaner to the CEO, Mr. Jason.
I was one of the partners at Tech Savvy Strategies, leading it together with Mr. Jason, who had been helping me till now.
In this organization, everyone is equal when it comes to treatment. As someone who had seen premium hell in the past, I detest seeing others being maltreated just because they're in a less position or unfortunate to make it big.
I walked directly to the office of Mr. Jason to greet him so we could discuss today's activity.
"Good morning, Mr. Jason," I greeted, letting out a warm smile. "I hope you had a good time during the weekend," I added. He is quite an accessible person, so we do joke and discuss other things apart from work some of the time.
"Of course, dear. By the way, you're not looking bad," he responded, and I chuckled blushingly.
"Thank you sir."
Just then, a knock came on the door.
"Yes, who's there?" he asked.
Just then, a knock came on the door."Yes, who's there?" he asked, but no one responded. This infuriated Mr. Jason, and he sighed in annoyance, then turned and focused on me."I'm sorry, I guess I have started hallucinating."I chuckled in amusement. "Not at all, sir. I also heard the knock. Let's assume it's caused by the breeze. You know your office is the last on this floor," I replied, and he responded with a smile."So, like I was saying, you'll tell me the secret of this sudden beauty of yours. You're becoming more beautiful daily," he went on, causing me to blush."If you say so, sir. By the way, I applied some facial blush; maybe that's what's confusing you.""I'm old enough to differentiate lush beauty and natural beauty," he insisted, staring at me with admiration.I couldn't help but fix my gaze on the desk, as I was too shy to glare at him anymore."In honesty, your beauty is one of the key factors I don't miss work anymore."I couldn't help but start twitching my fingers i
On our way to Southampton City, I was chatting with Daisy, my friend, because Jason was the one driving.Daisy: "Are you really going to Southampton City?"Zora: "Yes, dear, I'm going for a quick lunch with some investors. There's nothing to be worried about. It's just business."Daisy: "Sigh. What if you meet an unwanted guest at the meeting?"I couldn't help but chuckle, and Jason noticed."What's amusing you this time?" His eyes locked on mine as he asked."It's my friend, actually. She said something funny," I replied, my smile broadening."I see," he chipped in and concentrated on the wheel while I replied to Daisy's question.Zora: "That's unlikely to happen, but even if it does, it doesn't affect me anymore as I have moved on."Daisy: "You're right. Riffraffs don't deserve your feelings anymore, as responsible men are queuing to be with you."I chuckled again unknowingly, noticing what she meant. Daisy is always naughty and mostly talks about Jason's likeness towards me and als
My throat suddenly felt dry at his request. I was still uncomfortable being here today, and he's talking about bringing me here for the second time for a dinner."Erm, that would be great," I said, masking my emotions. "But honestly, you already know how busy I am lately, and I use weekends for my home chores and spending time with my girl.""Oh, alright. It's not a problem at all," Jason replied, smiling as if nothing had happened. To be honest, this is one of the reasons I like him; he never tries to force things on me or persuade me to accept his requests. He would just say it's fine and pretend as if nothing happened.Unless it's business-related, he would then look for a proper time to make the request for the second time, which I would hardly decline."So what would you like to drink while we wait for the Zech Holdings representatives?" he aske
"It's a pleasure to meet you, sir," the first man remarked, stretching out his hand in request of a handshake with Jason, and he accepted."You're welcome, sir," Jason replied with a smile on his lips as they exchanged handshakes, and he turned to greet others, only to see me approaching."Oh, there she is, Zora Paulson. The mastermind behind our revolutionary project," he said proudly with excitement and a smile all over his face.I couldn't help but force out a smile to greet the men as they turned to see me. However, my smile froze for some seconds as I and Zayn locked eyes. He's the one opposite Jason, and he's facing me."Zora! Finally, I found you," he said with excitement. The happiness was evident on his face, just like someone who had found a hidden treasure. My legs trembled, and I nearly lost my balance. I never expected this to happen. To see Zayn again in the same room where he humiliated me together with his wife Paige."What is he doing here?" I found myself questioning
"I can see you're yet to forget the incident. Hence, you have refused to talk to me. Well, I bought it under your name as compensation for what I did.""Erm..." I was choked with words. I didn't even know what to say at this point because I hadn't expected to hear that from him."Please, can we just focus on the reason we're here?" I said, trying to look serene, but deep down inside me, I was seething. I was dying of embarrassment that I wish the ground could just swallow me whole.I knew Zayn is always full of surprises, but not to this extent. Doesn't he know what to do with his money any longer? Why purchase it with my name? What happened to Paige?"Please, I'm lost here. Could any of you tell me exactly what's going on?" Jason asked, confusion flickering across his face and eyes."Well, I really understand how you're feeling right now," said Zayn, completely disregarding Jason's existence, let alone answering his question."I will feel the same if I were in your shoes," he added,
Zayn flashed me a glare with a smile and then responded, "Calm down, dear. Don't be in such a haste, dear."He then turned to Mr. Luke, who had already started fretting. "You still couldn't remember her?" he asked with a wry smile on his lips."My apologies, sir. Pardon my short memory. I've started aging so bad that I hardly recall recent incidents, let alone old ones," he remarked with a pleading tone. He was already shaking.I couldn't believe my eyes. This man was full of dominance and fearfulness back then. How did he end up in such a condition, being a mere worker, a cook even in his own established company?Zayn sighed. "It's fine," he said and paused for a few seconds, staring at him with scrutiny. "Do you know why I bought this place?" he added.Mr. Luke shook his head in disapproval, and Zayn cleared his throat to continue. "Great. Do you remember that day when a reckless and useless digger brought a complaint to you?"At this point, I could tell Mr. Luke had realized who I
"You mentioned buying this place for me... Fine, what happened to your lovely wife, Paige? She doesn't deserve it."Zayn was astounded by the question. He literally didn't expect me to react this way. Even Jason was shocked to his bone marrow. At first, Jason's expression was laced with disappointment, although he was at a point glued to the incident. However, there's this betrayed look he usually snaps at me, which I couldn't fathom.By now, I thought he must have realized that the man in front of me was my ex-husband.After staring at me for some while with a doubtful facial expression, Zayn finally exhaled a deep sigh and sat back on his executive chair. "Alright then. Let's get back to business," he remarked.I sighed and gulped hard. I was really furious. I sat back on my chair and picked up my glass of wine in front of me and sipped from it just so I could calm my emotions. So I could refrain from saying all the things in my head I intended to lash at Zayn. However, I was still f
Zayn let out a wry smile. He was unfazed by my response."Well, you can say that. Time passes, and people change as well," he said, gritting his teeth without the wry smile fading.I was surprised because the more I tried to subdue him, the more he found new tactics to defend himself. Was he trying to tell me he had changed? How did he expect me to believe that? I swallowed hard, and a faint smile escaped through my lips. He was indeed very brave. "Anyways, let's not get distracted. Since you've refused to go through the project demo, I'll give you a brief explanation then." With this being said, I brought out the 10.1-inch screen tablet phone from my bag and turned it on.I went to the gallery and scrolled to our company's illustration image, then handed him the tablet."We decided to come up with a new advertising system that not only helps in improvements in model marketing but also makes it more ey
ZORA—"Not a problem at all," the lady commented and stood up to fetch her kids. She came back a few minutes later holding the kids in both hands."Good evening, Miss Paulson. Did you come with Daisy?" Liam asked excitedly as he saw me, scanning the environment in search of his friend.I bit my lips, swallowing hard. I couldn't answer the question."Kids, Daisy's mom is here alongside her friends. They came so you could help them in search of your friend, Daisy," their father uttered, sitting them down."Mommy, is she missing? What about her daddy?" Sophia, the female one, asked inquisitively."Did you in any way see Daisy today after the dismissal time in your school?" their mother asked them tenderly, holding their shoulders."Yes, Mommy," they chorused in unison."We sat at the usual place we do, waiting for you when her father came and picked her up. He said he's taking her to the ice cream store.""Yes, Mommy. He could have taken us along too, but he was worried about you not fin
ZORA —I was sitting on the pavement outside Daisy's friends — the albino twins' house, waiting for Daisy and her husband to pull up so we could storm in and get clear information about who was the man they told me Daisy left with at the school. While waiting for them, I took out my phone and began logging in to all my social media platforms, searching for blogs to find out if there had been news of a missing girl, but throughout the whole platform, none of the blogs had carried such news today.I let out an exasperated sigh, my gaze downcast with my hand on my jaw.I gazed at my wristwatch. It was already 5:45 P.M., and there was no sign of my daughter being found.I held my head in agony. Gosh, why didn't the person who kidnapped her kidnap me instead? What use will Daisy be to him except he's an organ harvester?"God forbid!" I exclaimed, rebuking that thought. "My daughter can't be harvested."Just then, I heard a honk, and I raised my gaze; behold, it was Blake's car. Finally, th
ZORA—"Are you certain about what you're saying, ma'am? Have you reached out to all your family members, including extended family, to see if anyone picked her up?" the police officer inquired, frustrating me.I had gone to the police station to file a report after searching the daycare premises with their security personnel but still couldn't locate her.I can't even begin to describe the turmoil I'm experiencing. How could I have lost my five-year-old daughter? My hair was disheveled, and I was barefoot, unable to recall where I left my shoes due to my mental state. I silently prayed not to lose my composure and go insane."Officer, I don't have any close relatives living with me here; in fact, I don't have any relatives at all. I am the only child of my deceased parents, and I live alone with my daughter in this city," I explained."Just a moment," he said before disappearing inside. Upon his return, he delivered the disappointing news, "Unfortunately, we can't take action until tw
ZORA—I passed my hand across my face, feeling caught. Why the hell is he asking me that? I couldn't talk but clenched my lips."Your silence means that it's true. You still like him," Jason concluded, his tone a mix of anger and disappointment. The world around me seemed to be shattered at those words, and my body trembled with shock. Is someone giving him info about me?It seems he had realized what went on between me and Zayn at Southampton City. Maybe Blake had told him that I visited Zayn at his mansion.I couldn't shake off the fear that was catching me. Even if my relationship with him should end, it shouldn't be like this because Jason doesn't deserve to be hurt."I'm not consenting to anything, Jason. You're just being overly suspicious. I don't have anything to do with Zayn anymore since my project with his organization has ended. Are you convinced now?" I said, faking a victim expression.Jason sighed deeply, shaking his head in regret with a mix of deadpan smile on his lip
ZORA —"Are you saying that Daisy isn't my baby?""Ah. No, I didn't mean to say that," I said, realizing my mistake—I had insinuated that Jason is just being foolish by taking care of a child that doesn't belong to him unknowingly."You are the only father Daisy has. I'm sorry for being mouthy. Trust me, I didn't mean that," I went on apologizing."It's fine. So let's go together since you insisted on picking her up. Maybe you're scared of Daisy transferring all the parental love to me."A smug grin tugged on my lips as I found that statement amusing."Let's go then," I said. I picked the car key from the table and led the way while he followed. We sauntered to the parking lot. I was heading to my car when Jason objected. "Are you planning on driving me?""Of course. Anything wrong with that?" I asked him, looking worried."Not at all. But I want us to go with my car. I should drive you with my car," he stated, heading to his car.I had no option but to follow him. Jason always likes
ZORA —I was in my office sorting out works that I intended to embark on once I'm back from break. Suddenly, the door was opened, and I turned with tension. No one opens the door of my office and walks in without my messenger informing me beforehand, seeking permission first from me, so I was scared of being in danger. However, the moment I saw Jason entering, I exhaled a deep sigh of relief. "You literally freaked me out," I commented, pouting my lips as I faked a cry, doing that baby girl look, and as expected, he walked closer to me and began petting me."I'm sorry, baby. Pardon my misconduct," he said, hugging me and using his cheeks to brush mine.Nonetheless, I noticed one of his hands was hidden behind his back. "What's in your right hand?" I asked him."Do you want to know?" He responded with a question, leaving me curious while adjourning the hand down to his butt area as I tried to find out."Calm down. It was even meant for you. But you have to close your eyes first so I ca
ZAYN—I swallowed hard, my eyes rolling as I tried to quench the urge to sound harsh to him and tell him openly how he offended me."Nothing, Blake. I don't feel like going," I said, my gaze still on the kids.Blake sighed with frustration. "I think you're confused, Zayn. You don't know exactly what you want, and anyone helping you is just wasting their time on you. Do you know what it takes to organize a party? Making everyone leave their daily activities to join this party, which was organized solely because of you.""I'm not interested in any damn party, man! Call it off. What's the big deal there?" I barked at him, my tone venomous. He then let out a bitter chuckle. "I've helped you succeed with your mission, and now you're trying to kick me out of your life, thinking I'm of no use to you anymore?""You didn't help me with anything, Blake," I cut him short before he could finish his speech."How could you help me and be useful to me but only be backstabbing me? Hiding sensitive in
ZAYN —"No!" I roared, standing up from the couch and beginning to pace around the room.No way I'm going to let another man take away my child from me.Impossible!I reached for my phone and scrolled through the contact list; I wanted to call my pilot because I wanted to embark on a mission.I stared at my wrist, checking if I could make it on this mission that I'm about to embark on.As soon as the call was answered, I proceeded to deliver my message. "Hello, get the plane ready. I will be heading to Northville City. Expect me in the field in a short time," I remarked and quickly hung up the call without letting him say anything."Impossible!" I screamed again, dropping the glass cup of wine nonchalantly on the table and standing up, not minding the content pouring away."Another man can't claim my child on a platter of gold while I'm still alive," I grumbled, hurriedly dashing into my restroom to take a shower.About five minutes later, I was done with bathing, and I left for my ro
ZAYN—"Hello, Mr. Zayn. Always at your service. What's the deal this time?" He asked as soon as he answered the call.I took a deep breath before making my request. "I want you to investigate Zora for me. Heard she has a child, so I need you to confirm the maternity of the girl and the hospital she was birthed in in Northville City," I requested."Alright, but could you tell me the year of birth?" he requested, his fingers already typing on his keyboard as he began working on the request."Ummm..." I checked the girl's image on my computer to estimate her age and birth year."From her height, I would say she was born in 2019. But you should verify that as well. I will send you the girl's image so you can continue your investigation," I stated, forwarding the picture to Michael's email address."Got it, sir. I will give you feedback shortly," he said, and the call ended."Great," I muttered, clasping my fingers as I awaited Michael's response.Michael is a renowned detective who works
