Was I really expecting this to happen? I didn't even have a clue that the person who had been interviewing me nicely was the person who had sworn to take me to the prison if he we ever crossed path. I looked into the sea blue eyes that were slowly turning grey for no reason, not knowing what to do. Would this be the end of me and my ambitions? I have always dreamt of working with the biggest jewelry company in my country. The train of my thoughts was put to halt when he thumped the table and came out of his dimension. I wasn't sure he recognized me that well but I couldn't tell him that it wasn't me. Sooner or later, he would find out and that would only escalate the issue.
I could see him running his fingers through his hair and running it out again. He would try to say something by starting to gesticulate but he would end up dropping his hand and I stood there, watching him do whatever he wanted to do; termination? I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I would have to accept my fate.
“I just wanna ask you a single question, and I want you to answer it honestly. Okay?" He asked me through gritted teeth, narrowing his gaze as he approached me gently. I shrugged, knowing what he was going to ask me.
“Are you really that... that.." he pointed skywards. “Hazel? The one I met at the Silversteins party?" He asked, shaking his head from side to side as if he was expecting me to say know. It had been over fifteen months now and there was no way any of us could recognize one another because we barely saw each other's faces that night. The only thing I remembered about him was his name; GERALD FRASER.
“Yes, it's me." I said with what I couldn't say was confidence, but I tried to be confident and not get intimidated. That was my past; this was a new me. I just have to be myself here if I didn't want to go to jail today.
"How dare you come into my office?" He yelled, raising his arm - like he was going to strangulate me but he brought down his arms and put them in his pocket. I knew I had lost this job, but I wouldn't lose myself to jail. He had no proof.
“For your information, I didn't come into your office. You invited me willingly. You have always invited me." I told him, referring to what happened the other night.
"How confident!" He chuckled back to his seat. “Can I share something with you?" He asked and I knew it was sarcastic. He was going to say it even if I didn't consent. I shrugged a ‘no problem' while I started to pack my things on his table.
"I never believed in love at first sight until I saw you. But you shattered my heart just after I confessed my love for you. Do you even know how painful that was? I almost couldn't heal and I would have died of depression if I didn't have a family. You crushed my heart and you want to work in my company?" He smirked and stood up again, leaning forward. “You will have no place in my life. Not ever! A thief cannot work for me. Someone who broke my heart can't stay anywhere near me."
“Your story can be so heart breaking. I wasn't expecting you to tell me all of that, but can I also share something with you?" I asked rhetorically. “I know you never loved me. If you did, you could have ignored what happened that night and given me a second chance. Did you that? No you didn't."
“Enough! I have had enough of your blind confidence. You should be behind bars right now but I am giving you the privilege to walk out of here and don't ever come back. Beat it!" He yelled, showing me the way to the door. I carried my boxes and turned to away immediately. My eyes were teary but if I was going to cry, it wouldn't be here - in front of Gerald. I approached the door but before I could reach the door, it opened and Arin came in.
“Mr. Fraser, the BOD is here. They would like to meet you." Arin told him. He glanced at me and nodded gently. Arin went out and the so called BOD came in. They were four in numbers, smiling broadly as they approached Gerald's table. I stepped out of the office but I didn't leave the entrance because I was nervous. My mind wasn't able to settle down. It just felt like a nightmare. I was close to getting the job and I could actually do anything to get this job for myself.
“Congratulations Mr. Fraser." I heard one of the BODs congratulating him from where I stood and that drew my attention. I leant closely at the wall to find the reason he was being congratulated. He didn't seem like someone who had good news beforehand.
“I am sorry, but what for?" I heard his voice quivering as he said that. So, he also didn't know why he was being congratulated.
“Oh! Are you being serious? For our new employee of course. I couldn't believe you could made a decision so fast. You actually made the best decision, you know? Anyways, where is he right now? We need to have a colloquy with him. The designs you sent to us were just so amazing and he will be very good. So where is he now?" I could tell that it was me they were talking about. If these people really liked my work, I could take the advantage.
“Actually... Firstly, she is a lady. But... I want to tell you something about her." I heard Gerald say and my heart began to race again. He would scupper my plans if he revealed to these people about the past. I might never be able to work in any jewelry company in the country if these people got to know about me.
“What do you want to say? And where is she now?" I heard another man ask him and I had no other choice but to barge in. If they truly loved my work, they wouldn't mind my manners.
“I am here sir.." I said as I entered and they all turned around to see me. I smiled and approached them without even waiting for them to tell me anything. I dropped my boxes on the table and turned to face them. “My name is Hazel Willoughby." I introduced myself. They all glanced at one another for a few seconds before diverting their attention back to me. I saw Gerald clenching his fist and gritting his teeth but I didn't focus on him.
“Would you like to check out my work?" I asked when I saw that no one was talking. They were actually staring at me with awe.
“Yea sure!" One of them nodded. “I am Bry Agnes. The board's chairman. You're welcome to our company." He shook my hands.
"And I am Richard Boulder, the executive director." Another shook my hand.
“I am Charles Smith. The CFO of the company."
“And I am Johannes Kapson. The vice president." They all introduced themselves and shook my hand while Gerald stood there looking dumb. I opened the boxes and showed them all the pieces of jewelry I made. I could see them admiring each and every objects they found in the boxes.
“Mr. Fraser, what do you say to this? How can a lady be so perfect like Ms. Willoughby? She has a wide range knowledge of these things and I am sure she will take our company to the greatest heights. She is jovial and cool." Mr. Charles told him while he admired the diamond necklace I designed.
"I really need to tell you guys something. We cannot..."
"Oh yea, I forgot to tell you." I cut in before he would say what he wanted to say. I picked up the paper Gerald had asked me to sign and showed it to the BOD. I knew he wouldn't want to take back his statement, especially when the BOD saw that I had signed the agreement. “Mr. Fraser wants me as well, I have signed the permanent staff member’s agreement. And I am ready to work for you all. I will put in my best."
"We are looking forward to that Ms. Willoughby. It's so obvious that you are a precious gemstone that we must not lose. You're an amazing designer and I am sure you can help teach other staff members too." Mr. Cole said and I nodded.
“Mrs. Willoughby, can you tell us how you became so good? How did you get the knowledge of all cultural designs? You are actually the first person I have met." Mr. Charles said.
"Me too..." Mr. Cole added. I felt so overwhelmed hearing all of these praises and compliments. It even made me ignore Gerald's words.
“Well, the last fifteen months of my life have been between France and Turkey, learning how to make the best jewelry designs. Learning all cultural jewelry designs can be very stressful but it was my goal and I achieved it. I learnt everything and I graduated as the best student with no criminal records." I told them, smiling but I was actually directing the information to Gerald. I could see him making a move when he heard (with no criminal records).
"That's really nice. You are everything we need in our company. We want this company to be unique. We want it to be different from the rest of the jewelry making companies in this country so we decided to give room to all culture jewelries designs. Africans, Asians, Europeans, Americans, Australians."
“I am ready to do anything for this company. But of course, with Mr. Fraser's permission. I need to know if he wants me here or not." I said and turned to Gerald.
"Why wouldn't he want you here? Everyone wants you to stay here and work for us." Mr. Bry said.
"Would you like to ask him?" I queried.
"Mr. Fraser, this is a gemstone, we cannot lose her. Do you have problem with this lady?"
Gerald looked up, staring at me threateningly but I kept smiling at him. I didn't let his glare intimidate me. “W.. why - would I have a pro...blem with her? She is good and capable. She is our employer now and she will be working for us from now on." I finally forced him to say what he never thought he would say some minutes ago.
"Can you hear that Ms. Willoughby?" They asked and I nodded.
The executive director walked towards me, handing over a bracelet he had taken from my box to me. "Ms. Willoughby, what is your experience working in a team?" He asked me when everywhere was silent. It was if he had been waiting for the silence to ask the question. I didn't know why I felt he asked me the question because he had a hidden agenda. He hadn't been speaking since and that made me very worried. I took a deep breath and tried to act like everything was normal. You can do this, I encouraged myself.
"During my courses, most of my teachers assigned group projects. I always enjoyed the chance to work with others and learn from their perspectives. My favorite project was examining a company for an economics class. We all communicated so well, and that made our project one of the best in the class. Some of my teammates were in business classes as well, so they gave us advice we might not have known about otherwise. Since we weren't based only on designs. We did the theoretical aspect of it."
"That's nice." He nodded, staring the wall in front of him. He had another question to ask me, I could tell. "How would you define success in this role?"
"Success is when I can find the perfect piece for a customer. I love seeing a customer smile when they finally find exactly what they're looking for and leave with something that brightens their day." I replied and he nodded again, congratulating me. They all welcomed me again and left the office when they were done with the rest of the formalities. When they were all gone, I picked up my boxes and started to leave the office when Gerald called me back.
"Yes boss!" I answered sarcastically.
"What a beautiful game you played today. I can see that you are very smart. Let me make one thing clear to you. If you steal anything from my company, I will destroy you completely." He threatened but I wasn't fazed.
"You actually look cute when upset." I admitted.
I was up before the sun. You know why? It was first day at my new job. It would be one of the most memorable day of my life. I couldn't wait to get started as a jewelry designer at one of the most prestigious companies in the city. Fraser's Gemonds Jewelry Inc., happened to be the best and I had spent months preparing for this very moment, and now it was finally here. I did not care about any other things apart from my job and I did not allow anything to bother me - Gerald, precisely. I actually thought about him but I knew I would never get him. He did not want to have anything to do with me any longer and I guess I also wasn't interested in a toxic relationship. That's the most he could offer. There was one thing I noticed. Whenever I thought about Gerald, I lost interest in the company. That was a red flag... I would not want to lose interest in a company where I could show my skills to the whole world. This was a chance for me to promote myself. Nothing would ruin it. Gerald
“Hazel! Where are you?" I heard someone saying from outside. I tried to peek to see who it was and where she was heading. It wasn't someone I recognized. "Have you seen Ms. Willoughby anywhere? We have been looking for her." I heard another person say. He was referring to the guards at the exit of the store. They both shook their heads as a negative response and the guy left from there. As the hours ticked by, I began to panic. I knew I couldn't stay in the store much longer, but I didn't know how to get past the guards. They were very vigilant. I thought about calling for help, but I didn't want to risk being caught. This would only give Gerald the gut to treat me the way he wanted. It was getting so late and the time to conclude the work of the day was approaching. Wouldn't they have filed a police complaint? Oh my God. What mess had I put myself into? My phone wasn't even with me. I sat down exhausted, leaning against the wall as I tried to figure out a way to get out of
I still couldn't believe how quickly things have spiraled out of control. Whenever I remembered everything that had been happening, I would feel like throwing myself against the wall. It had only been a week since I started working here, and yet I feel as though I've been sucked into a vortex of deceit and betrayal. It was all caused by me. It was my fault, so I could imagine. I'd always been a bit of a kleptomaniac, but I never imagined I'd get caught. I thought I was slick, I thought I was careful, but I was wrong. Gerald actually caught me red-handed, stealing from the store. I never thought about the CCTV cameras and that was why I was in this mess. I thought for sure I was going to be fired and arrested, but instead, he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. "Do whatever I ask, whenever I ask it, and I won't turn you in," he said, his voice low and threatening. "And if you say no, I'll make sure you rot in jail for a long time." He repeated that severally when I was in his o
I decided to take a break as soon as it was lunchtime. As usual, I and Emily went to the cafeteria to have our lunch. We were served pizza and coffee. “Hey Emily, what's up?" I asked as we started eating. Seeing her like this was unusual. She looked stressed. "Not much, I was just trying to finish up a project by the deadline," Emily replied, biting into the square shaped pizza in her hand. I nodded and continued eating. I had been thinking of telling her about what I did, each time I remembered how confident I was, my stomach would rumble in excitement. I just couldn't contain my excitement any longer. "Emily!" I called. "You won't believe what happened earlier today," I said, leaning in closer to Emily. "What happened?" Emily asked, intrigued. “Can you keep a secret?" I asked. “Of course. You can trust me? Your secrets are safe with me." She said. "Could you believe, I challenged the C.E.O!" Hazel exclaimed. Emily's eyes widened in surprise. "W - W - What d
Gerald hurried into his office, slamming the door behind him. He was fuming with anger, his face red and contorted with rage. He marched to his desk and grabbed a bottle of whiskey, pouring himself a large glass. He gulped it down in one go, feeling the fiery liquid burn down his throat. He poured himself another glass and took a seat in his leather chair, staring blankly ahead.Arin, his personal assistant, had been sitting in Gerald's office, working on some reports. She was shocked to see his reaction and went to him immediately. "Gerald, what's wrong? What's happened?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.Gerald didn't want to tell her anything. He just shook his head and took another swig of whiskey. "Nothing, Arin. It's just work stuff. Don't worry about it," he mumbled, his words slurring slightly.Arin was worried about him. She had never seen him like this before. He was always calm and collected, even in the most stressful situations. But today, he seemed different. He
I guessed recently, I had been a bit of a wild card at the company. It wasn't my fault but the liberty I got this week, I couldn't make less of it. On normal days, I didn't like to be told what to do and would often go off and do my own thing. I didn't know I could ever get an opportunity like this. To make my own moves without being scared of getting fired. This week was my week and I would do whatever, including punishing that arrogant man of a C.E.O. I felt like I had a newfound freedom. I started to move freely around the company, chatting with my colleagues and even going into Gerald's office to tease him. Despite doing all of these, I made sure I didn't cross any line that would make the directors interfere in this matter. They had always seen me as the good girl and I wanted to maintain this status. "Hey there, big shot," I said, sauntering into Gerald's office with a smirk on my face. "How's your day going? I don't know why but I feel you are very bored sitting alone in your
Gerald sat at his desk, staring at his computer screen. He couldn't concentrate on anything, and his mind kept wandering. He took a sip of his champagne and tried to calm his nerves. He had a feeling that Hazel, was going to cause another trouble, and he didn't know how to handle it. How could she be so confident? How he wished he had known it was her before giving her the job. He glanced at his wrist watch; it was past 9 and Hazel hadn't arrived. He dialed the number of the receptionist immediately. “Hello! Good morning Mr. Fraser, how may I be of help?" He heard the receptionist speaking from the other end. Gerald cleared his throat. “Em... I don't know. I just wanna know if Ms. Willoughby is present. Is she?" “I am not quite definite sir, I haven't seen her this morning but give me a second, let me go through the attendance," The receptionist answered. “Alright... I am waiting." He said and silence took over for some seconds. “Are you still there?" Gerald asked wh
“I was only kidding, there is no secret." I said when I saw Gerald's facial expression. I knew what I just said didn't convince Arin but I didn't care. I just did what I had to do. Arin took a deep breath and went back to her seat, leaving I and Gerald on our feet. “So, what do you want now?" Gerald asked me, twitching his nose. “Nothing special... I think this is the end of our deal. Now we are both even. You will act like my normal employer to me and I will also act like a normal employee. But before that, I have one request." I said, raising one of my fingers. Gerald's forehead wrinkled when he heard that. He opened his mouth to say something but he stopped and raked his fingers cross his hair. “And what is this request?" “I just remembered that we still have few more minutes left before the deal's cancelled, so I was thinking of giving you one more task to fulfill before then. Remember, you are to do as I say, otherwise.." “Otherwise what?" He snapped angril
After a one-hour recess, the doors of the courtroom swung open, and a solemn silence fell over the room. Mark Wilson, adorned in a disheveled suit, returned to his seat next to his defense attorney as he disgustingly glared at Gerald. The tension in the air was palpable as all eyes turned towards him. The judge, a stern figure draped in black robes, resumed his position on the elevated bench. He surveyed the room with an air of authority, his gaze landing on Mark Wilson. "Mr. Wilson, it is time for your final defense to present any evidence supporting your innocence," he declared, his voice resonating through the room. Mark Wilson's attorney, a middle-aged man with graying hair, rose from his seat, his expression anxious. He glanced towards Mark, his eyes filled with unease, and then nervously addressed the judge. "Your Honor, unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances and lack of conclusive evidence, we have no additional exhibits or witnesses to present. However,
Gerald closed the door behind him and leaned against it, feeling exhausted and drained. He had just spent hours at the police station with his lawyer, Mr. James, trying to prove that Mark was the one who had been blackmailing Hazel, his fiancee, for months. Gerald rubbed his eyes and sighed. He looked at his watch and saw that it was past midnight. He wondered if Hazel was still awake, waiting for him. He pushed himself away from the door and walked towards their bedroom, hoping to find her asleep in their bed. He reached the bedroom door and opened it quietly, not wanting to wake her up if she was sleeping. He stepped inside and saw her sitting on the bed, wearing a white nightgown that contrasted with her dark hair. She looked up at him with wide eyes that reflected the moonlight coming through the window. She smiled faintly and said in a soft voice: “Gerald… you’re back.” He smiled back at her and walked towards the bed, dropping his briefcase on the flo
The dimly lit police station was filled with an air of tension as Gerald stood beside his lawyer, Mr. James. They both shared a look of determination, while Mark looked nervously around. The room was cold, with gray walls and a flickering fluorescent light overhead, casting an eerie glow on the worn-out furniture. Officer Jacobs, a middle-aged man with a stern expression, entered the room. He had a no-nonsense demeanor that intimidated even the most composed individuals. He approached Mark, handcuffs in his hand. "Mark Wilson, if I get that right, you're under arrest for the alleged blackmail of Mr. Gerald Carrington Fraser's fiancée," Officer Jacobs declared, his voice firm. Mark's eyes widened with what seemed like disbelief. "What? No, Officer, you've got it all wrong. I would never do such a thing! I was in my room when these two men barged in. Firstly, I could have charged them for invasion of privacy, but I didn't. Now, they are accusing me of what? This is what we
Hazel looked at Gerald, her heart pounding as she wondered where to start the whole narration from. Obviously, she wasn't at fault because she didn't do anything but would Gerald believe that? He knew that she was obsessive, so if something like that happened, no one would want to doubt it. And here she was again, the fact that she hid it from everyone will make it seem as though she was trying to cover up for herself. "Why are you silent? Speak up! You need to say something." Gerald said, almost yelling. "I don't want to care what happened. Just tell me in details. Who is Mark and why is he blackmailing you? It is had simple as that." Hazel took a deep breath, and sat up for the sake of comfort. "Promise me you won't hurt me." "Does it matter? Just tell me what happened." "I really didn't do anything, I swear. I was being blackmailed falsely because I know the consequences of it getting out." Hazel said, her gaze apologetic as she spoke. "If you didn't do an
Hazel's eyes fluttered open blinking away the remnants of sleep. Her body felt heavy and tender each movement, a reminder of the accident that had landed her in the hospital. As she tried to adjust to the warm sunlight that streamed through the bedroom window the scent of something delicious wafted into her nostrils. Hazel turned her head and saw Gerald standing in the doorway a soft smile on his face. "Good morning my love. How are you feeling today?" Gerald asked his voice filled with genuine concern. Hazel mustered a weak smile and replied "I'm getting there slowly but surely. Thank you for taking care of me Gerald." Gerald crossed the room, his footsteps gentle on the hardwood floor. Pulling a chair beside the bed he sat down and took Hazel's hand in his own. "You don't need to thank me Hazel. Taking care of you is the least I can do after what happened l," he said his voice filled with determination. Hazel gazed into his eyes filled with gratitude and love.
The sun shone brightly through the hospital window, casting a warm glow on Hazel's face as she watched the door waiting eagerly for Gerald to arrive. It had been a difficult journey days spent in pain and uncertainty, but his visits were like beams of light in her darkest moments. He brought laughter love and a sense of normalcy to her life in the sterile hospital room. Gerald walked through the gleaming white corridors of the hospital his heart pounding with anticipation. He couldn't help but feel a mix of anxiety and excitement every time he came to visit Hazel. Her vibrant smile and infectious joy had always been a light in his life and he couldn't wait to see her again. As the door creaked open Hazel's heart skipped a beat. There stood Gerald tall and handsome a bouquet of colorful flowers in his hand. His hazel eyes sparkled with joy as he caught sight of her and a wide smile spread across his face. As he approached her, he took a deep breath to steady his nerves. Opening the
Finally Hazel's eyes opened and a weak smile graced her lips. "Gerald," she whispered her voice fragile but filled with love. Gerald felt a rush of emotion relief flooding his being. He leaned closer to her tears streaming down his face. "Hazel you're awake. Thank God you're okay." Hazel's smile widened her voice barely a whisper. "I love you Gerald. I'm sorry for scaring you." Gerald placed a gentle kiss on her forehead their love reaffirmed in that sacred moment. "I love you too Hazel. Nothing else matters as long as you're here with me." In that beautiful instant all the fear worry and anxiety melted away. Gerald held onto Hazel's hand cherishing their love and grateful for each slow-paced beat of their journey ahead. Gerald's heart pounded in his chest as he paced back and forth his mind racing with worry and fear. How could this have happened? Hazel was always so careful so cautious. Gerald's heart pounded in his chest as he paced back and forth his mind racing with worry and fear. How could this have happened? Hazel was always so careful so cautious. He searched for answers trying to make sense of the accident that had turned his world upside down. As he continued to pace, his mind kept replaying the words the nurse had spoken just moments ago "I'm sorry but Hazel is still in the theatre and we have no news about her condition." Those words seemed to echo endlessly in his mind. The unknown was tormenting him; he was desperate for answers for any sign of hope. He didn't know who to call and discuss this issue with. He was so stressed out. Just as he was about to lose all hope his phone began to ring, startling him from his thoughts. He fumbled to grab it his hands trembling. Looking at the caller ID he saw it was his sister Annie. His relief was short-lived though as he realized that Annie somehow already knew about Hazel's accident. There could be no other r
Gerald's eyes fluttered open as the dim morning light streamed through the curtains casting a soft glow in the living room. Confusion instantly washed over him as he realized he was sprawled on the couch instead of his usual spot in the bedroom. He sat up abruptly, his heart pounding in his chest and called out Hazel's name. Silence enveloped the room amplifying his growing anxiety. "Hazel, where are you? Why couldn't you wake me up when you came in?" He said. Darting his eyes around the living room, Gerald searched for any sign of his fiancée. To his dismay there was no trace of Hazel, no shoes by the front door, no handbag on the kitchen counter. Panic seeped into his veins as he hastily made his way to the bedroom hoping to find her there. But the room was empty, her side of the bed untouched. She didn't come back home last night? Gerald asked himself, totally confused and furious. Wide-eyed and growing increasingly alarmed Gerald reached for his phone and dialed Ha
