May frowned at the beautiful, melanin-dripping figure donning a plain short red gown indicating danger standing in her doorway.
She was about to speak when her daughter shouted, "Aunty Bella!"
The girl ran towards her, hugging her, but the woman did not hug her back. Her gaze was on May.
"We meet again." Bella winked, trying to get on May's nerve. She didn't seem to know she had already been on her nerves from the second she stepped into the apartment.
May looked around for her daughter who had already left for her room. Seeing that Maryam was out of earshot, May spoke, her jaw tightened. "Why are you here, Bella?"
Bella made a poor attempt at staring at May with innocent puppy dog eyes, fluttering her artificial eyelashes. She sarcastically said, "Ain't you going to welcome me first? Oh! I forgot you're my special fan." She smirked, adding, "Well if you must know I am here with my boyfriend who happens to be your husband." She emphasized her words, shamelessly stressing "boyfriend" to add more weight.
May's heart broke, but she tried to hide it. She didn't want Bella to see that her words affected her.
"You're not welcome here," May informed the intruder coolly.
Bella's lips parted to speak, but Edric's voice cut her off. "You're wrong, May. She is very welcome."
Edric appeared beside Bella, pulling her two suitcases inside. May gave Edric a look. Her eyes looked back at Bella in time to see a victorious smile plastered on her face.
"But she can't stay here. We have only two bedrooms and I won't permit her ass to sleep next to my daughter. So?" May folded her arms against her chest.
Edric walked past her, dragging the suitcase along with him.
"She will sleep with me in my room. Just make yourself comfortable in the parlor."
Her mouth dropped open. What had gotten into Edric's head? She knew the answer. Bella.
When she was sure Edric had left the room, she grabbed Bella's hand. May snarled through gritted teeth. "Where do you think you are going, harlot?"
"Let me go," Bella cried out as May's fingers dug into her skin. She tried to free herself but May's hold was firm despite her skinny appearance.
"You're hurting me! Let me go."
Now it was May's turn to feign innocence. She touched her chest with her free hand. "Oh! Aren't I your biggest fan?"
Bella feared that her arm would bleed soon. It looked like May wasn't going to free her.
An unexpected blow landed on May's face. She stumbled, almost falling to the ground.
She touched her lip to see a small drop of blood on her finger. Her lip had split from Edric's punch.
Her eyes watered when she saw Edric placing kisses on Bella's sore hand. May swallowed hard. He stopped touching her after she gave birth to Maryam, and now he was kissing another woman in front of her.
May knew Edric, with the way he was acting towards her lately, she knew he had mistresses at his office. She never once thought that he would bring one home though. Even if he wanted to bring someone to the house, she didn't think he'd bring Bella.
He knew how much she hated her. There was something off about Bella she couldn't place.
There were few occasions where Edric had raised his hand to hit her, but he'd never gone through with it.
Well, until now. Now he raised his fist in defense of another woman. It was quite unbelievable. All these years she'd lived with him just for him to treat her like this.
May turned her back to them, staring at her shadowy reflection on the box television in front of her. She fought the tears.
She wouldn't cry in front of them. She wouldn't.
"Listen, woman, this is my house!" Edric started. "I will do whatever I want in it and you have no say. I say Bella stays, so Bella stays."
With that, May heard the sound of the bedroom door slam shut.
She shakily sat down, letting the tears that she'd been holding back fall. Throughout the night, she couldn't sleep with the thought of her husband having sex with another woman on their bed.
.....
May woke up with heavy eyes and a throbbing headache. She sluggishly walked to the kitchen, dragging her feet on the floor.
She splashed water on her face, washing away the line of saliva that had dried across her face. When the water touched her face the second time, she felt quite relieved. She had been sobbing throughout the night with a heavy heart. It wasn't an easy thing to listen to her husband's mistress moan while they made love. Something he hadn't been doing with May.
She wondered what she might have done to deserve this neglect. Was it because she was ugly and was no longer as robust as she used to be?
No matter what his reasons were, May didn't think they were good enough for Edric to treat her like that. After all, he was the cause of her fall. She made a mental note to call her mother-in-law later in the day.
As she was deep in thought, Maryam's head bobbed in through the kitchen door. "Good morning, mum."
May looked up at her. "Oh Morning, my girl."
Maryam hugged her mother, burying her face in May's clothes for a while before she pulled her away. Maryam, through her admirable observation, noticed her mother's state. "Mommy, are you crying?"
May swiftly wiped a tear with her finger before it could slip. "No. It's just the water I used to wash my face."
If Maryam didn't believe her mother's lie, she didn't push further about it. She was sure that her mother had been crying because of her puffy red eyes.
"Look who is up." They both turned to the owner of the voice. Bella was standing there, leaning against the kitchen door. She was still clad in her night wear, a red button-down top only long enough to reach her butt. Since it wasn't buttoned, one could see her nipples through the white singlet she wore. May noticed with a certain dissatisfaction that Bella's revealing garments brought out her naturally flattering curves.
When it came to Bella's body, May knew she was no match, especially not in her present condition.
Bella smirked and slipped her hands into the sleeve pocket. "How was your night, Maryam?"
Little Maryam could feel the tension building up between her mother and the other woman and answered coolly. "It was fine. What about yours, Aunty Bella?"
A smile danced on Bella's face as she sashayed into the kitchen. "Well, mine was fine, baby girl." She took a bottle of water from the fridge and poured some into a Stainless Steel cup. She turned to May. "Very fine," she rubbed the line of the cup on her lip for a while, winking at May before taking a sip.
When May said nothing, she dropped the cup on the cupboard and walked out, adding, "But I'm sure you can't say the same."
The mother and daughter's gaze locked for a while after she left. Maryam's eyes were questioning because she knew that whatever Aunty Bella was doing made her mother sad, and her mother was not happy about it.
She decided to break the silence. "Mama, are you okay?"
"Yes," May forced herself to say. She turned quickly, grabbing Maryam's small, green toothbrush and her purple toothbrush from its container. She took the toothpaste and handed everything to Maryam while clutching her toothbrush.
"Let's go brush our teeth."
Maryam happily agreed. It didn't hurt her chances of getting to school early. They stepped outside through the backyard door and did what they were there for.
....
May dressed Maryam in her school uniform. A white t-shirt with purple stripes on it and a purple skirt with white stockings.
"You better concentrate in class while your teacher talks," May advised, buckling Maryam's black sandals. "You will become a bright woman in the future that way. You know what they say, education is the key to success."
Maryam gave a curt nod. "Yes."
May decided to tell her a little story. "You know, your mommy didn't get to finish school and she regrets it."
"Why?"
"Because she knew she wouldn't become the woman she had always dreamt to be."
"Why didn't you finish school?"
"Because by the time I was in senior secondary class two, I was pregnant with you."
Maryam hugged her mother. "But don't be sad. You will graduate one day."
May smiled, but it didn't last as a figure walked into Maryam's room, adjusting his black tie.
Edric flung some crumpled, dirty naira notes on the bed. "For Maryam's snacks. And after you take her to school, drop by the market and get some food for yourself. My Bella won't be cooking anything for your lazy self."
With that, he walked out, ignoring the presence of his puzzled daughter. May's heart burned and she tried to steady her breathing.
The road that led to the market was muddy. There were annoyingly large potholes almost everywhere and the water that filled them made the air feel stagnant. May had to clutch the end of her long basket gown so it didn't drag on the muddy floor while she walked and jumped over the shallow pits. Not to mention the sand pieces stabbing her feet and clinging to her gown.As
If someone had told May that another woman would take her place in her own home, she would have laughed. But here she was, reluctantly massaging another woman's shoulders because her husband instructed her to.Maryam was already sound asleep so she didn't get to see her mother's shame.
Everything seemed blurry when May finally opened her doe eyes. Her head felt too heavy for her neck to carry and the sharp pain throbbing from her jaw didn't help. She groaned, rubbing her eyes until she could see clearly, clumsily massaging her jaw.
The wooden door gently closed behind her. She bent down to sit on the floor while resting her back on the door.
May began to explain things to Mama. She didn't forget to add Edric's affair with Bella. She didn't go into detail, but she still managed to express how she felt.
"You heard me right." He said.May rolled her eyes. "So what are you? A psychologist?"
"Answer me!" Edric thundered, standing up and taking a few steps towards her.May shivered, unable to speak.
"Where do you think you're going?" Edric's voice caused May and Maryam to freeze. She was leaving for church but he just had to come out of his room just when she was about to open the door, spoiling everything for her."Church?" She answered for the second time, confusion making the word quizzical.
A new yearNew years eve were always a beehive of activities for May's Household. The night before new year, Iby would clean up the entire house with the little help of twelve year old Maryam. If she wasn't helping her step father out, then she was busy playing with her younger brother, Oyins, who was just two years of age. As for May, she would go to the market and buy the food stuff she needed for cooking. After they were all done with the house activities, they took their baths and went to church for the cross over service. They turned off all the lights in church and lit a candle once the time struck twelve o'clock midnight. Out cry or shouts of joy followed with people gyrating and dancing because they'd live to see a brand new year. Meanwhile, other people didn't get to see the previous year. Before May and her family left the church, they took prayers of prosperity a
"When i found out about your pregnancy, i told you to abort the child because I wasn't ready to become a father," Edric continued, "But you refused.""But.. But I remember telling you that i was scared." May reminded him, "I couldn't abort the child. By the way, you recommended a quack doctor and I couldn't risk my life. What if something had gone wrong? Like my womb got damaged and I couldn't get pregnant again, would you have accepted and married me?""May, you could've just swallowed the contraceptives I gave to you. It could've prevented you from getting pregnant.."May rolled her eyes at him, "Well, you shouldn't have eat it raw then.""May, I didn't invite you to my room that night.
It was obvious May had forgotten. So to remind her, Edric had to start from the beginning because every story had one. Since May wasn't planning on letting him into her house, he stood outside and explained his own reasons to her. As he talked, everything played in May's head, taking her back to seventeen. Way back to the time Edric's father was employed. To the time her Dad had promised Edric that he would sponsor his studies abroad because of how intelligent he was and to that night. That particular night that spoilt everything.May tiptoed down the stairs quietly as she could, looking her left and right side to be sure no one saw her sneaking out of the main building and heading towards the Gateman's house that was located just few inches close to the black giant gate. The Gateman's house had two rooms, a portable kitchen and bathroom. Papa Edri
"What would happen now?" Iby asked May who visited him in prison with food and water."I don't know." She sighed, in a sad mood."Would you get back together with him?" Iby asked."Who?" May asked confused. He motioned his head towards Tega, who had accompanied May to the prison and who was standing at the far end of the hot room, waiting for May."No." She told him, "The only man I want to get back together with is you.""But I'm in prison. I'll be here for two years—""I'm willing to wait for you."Iby placed his hand on hers that were on the table separating them, "You seriously don't have to do this. I've only spent almost two months here and it already feels like years. I don't want you to wait for me. Let yourself to love someone else.. Study hard to get a degree, be a good mother and get married to a good man."
For the first time in a long while, May actually went down on her knees and pleaded with Edric to let Iby go but he refused. He was bent on making Iby see the four walls of prison, forgetting that he was a dough bag himself, a scum but May had only divorced him instead of taking him to court for domestic abuse. Not like she couldn't arrest him or make him suffer for what he did to her. Been the governor's daughter would've paid off and make it a lot easier of course. But she didn't want to be seen as using her Fathers influence, wealth and authority to her advantage or gossipped to have arrested Edric only because he arrested Iby. There was still something she needed to shape in her life and that was, to stop listening to what the world had to say about her.It was because of Iby's arrest, she found herself standing in fro
"Lies!" Edric shouted, hitting his fist on the table immediately Iby finished his explanation, "You hear me? All what you've said are lies and I'm not going to buy it.""Edric," May turned to him. Her voice low, already too exhausted with everything. "One thing I know Iby for is that he doesn't tell lies, no matter what."Edric wouldn't take it, "No. As far as I am concerned your visitor here is not only a killer but a liar, making up excuses as to why he couldn't save Elene.""Edric listen to yourself. I know you too well. If you were in Iby's shoes, you'd not even think twice. If Ebiere was your sister, and Elene was his, you would have knocked her down on purpose just so she'll get out of the way for you to take your sister to the hospital." May defended, reasonably, "It is only
It was at that very day the accident choose to occur; just directly across the old family house. That day, Edric had graced his siblings get together and Elene had ran out excitedly to buy her brother a drink without knowing that it was going to be the end of her dear life. Her twin brother had claimed to have seen the killers face. That killer was presently sitting opposite him at the dinning table with complete shock written all over his face while Edric dug his fingers into his palm, fighting with the urge to pounce on his sisters killer and squeeze the life out of him.To everyone at the dinning table, the visitor happens to be a killer but to May, he was literally everything to her. It was unbelievable. In fact, May ceased to believe it for the Iby she knew couldn't even hurt a fly.
As for Edric, he had lost hope in retrieving his money back from Bella. She was no where to be found and her line was never going through. It didn't take long for him to accept the fact that she had lied to him from the start about her family's background and now, had ran away with his money. That huge amount of money. It was frustrating, annoying and making him think alot that he lost concentration at work. When his boss couldn't take all the errors Edric would always make at work, he sacked him and that only made matters worse for Edric. He knew he couldn't get another job so easily since he wasn't a graduate but he tried his best, searching for other jobs. On looking at his curriculum vitae, his application was always turned down by the manager of the company saying that Edric wasn't qualified enough to work with them. When he tried more companies and was never accepted, it got him depressed. The sudden turn in his life was making him lose his mind slow
"Hey, Hey, hold your horses there. Iby is not just any guy, Tega. At least, not to me. Why would you lie to him? Are we dating?"He drew closer to her with a smile, "Don't you think its about time we do? It's taking too long for crying out loud." He traced his fingers down the side of her face just like Iby would've. The only difference is, he wasn't Iby and this gave her a stinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. She slapped his hand off her, "We are not dating and we would never date.""Okay, I know you're angry because of my little lie so I'm sorry. But did you see how Iby was looking at you? I knew immediately that he has feelings for you and I can't stand that. It makes me so jealous, May. That's why." Tega explained, hoping to be forgiven."You're jealous to a fault, Tega." May shook her head in negative. "And that's enough reason why we can't be together. Not today, not tomorrow and not even in o
