-VALEN'S POV-
Teleporting into my parents' house could always be risky. Manifesting in the living room lessened the possibility that I might not barge in on them doing the nasty. Something churned in my gut at the awful memory of how many times I have caught them. Blah! I shuddered and shoved the images out of my head.
Today, thankfully, the coast was clear. The scent of roses filled the house. It was homely. Zeus stirred within me. We missed Mama Wolf.
Hearing a fridge door open and close, I headed to the kitchen with a smile. Mom placed a bowl of baked turkey legs on the counter.
Nyx suddenly pranced from midair to Mom’s side. His big white head nuzzled into her side as he looked up at her. His curling tail switched from side to side, excitedly.
“I felt you come in.” Mom lifted her head, smiling with the warmest love in the world. Her hand automatically patted Nyx’s white head. “We're alone, but your Dad should be here any minute.”
She left the counter and I watched her take out a plate from the top white cupboard to put a turkey leg on it.
“What's the urgency?” I went over to her.
By the time she swung around from putting the plate into the microwave, I hugged her sideways and kissed her temple.
“I'll get into it when your Dad gets here.” She tapped my arm and I released her.
“How's Venus?” I asked.
She bent to get Nyx’s dish from the lower cupboard, placing it down on the floor. He flicked his tail, observing Mom’s actions.
Mom frowned. “Marlena did her wiccan diagnosis and discovered that Venus is being affected by the antidote we placed into her system to eliminate the Kripling's blood.”
“That was years ago,” I remember when we were kids and the Lion King tried to steal our sacred Coyolxāuhqui stone.
The pack was invaded by Barakian Kriplings that were resurrected warlocks in the form of wraiths. One bit Venus to snatch her blood while poisoning her body with his. The antidote was from Mer-King Aegeus of Pearl Merrow Kingdom to form good relations with us. It allied the ocean tribe of Oscianever Loch with our land-walkers pack.
Mom retrieved another turkey leg from the pile on the counter and bent to give it to Nyx in his dish. He swished his tail and licked the bone a few times before devouring the cooked meat.
“Well, the antidote is affecting her now. She's…” The microwave beeped and Mom turned to get my meal.
I wasn't hungry, but she would still feed me. It was always best to come here with an empty stomach.
She placed the dish in front of me. “Venus is craving things of the ocean. Your Dad wants to meet with the Mer-King but because of the Worgens attack, there was a delay.”
Mom frowned, handing me a napkin. Too much was happening to this family.
“Do you want me to go and see the merman?” I would do anything to ease her stress.
“Could you?” Her hopeful eyes questioned. “You’d get to his tribe faster than if we summoned him here.”
“Sure.” I nodded.
She smiled and extended a hand to cup my cheek. “Thank you. I know you're under a lot of pressure. I take it that Raina’s awakened.”
“Yes. Her parents took her to Suftrose Forest to placate the unrest.” I munched.
I devoured the tasty turkey leg as Mom went on about the Howl De Lune that was coming up. I brought up the invitations that Raina and I received and that we declined.
“I’m sure the Alphas will understand. Besides, you could always visit their packs later.” Mom turned, folding her hands to observe my lion guardian who was busy licking his turkey bone. “You need a trim.”
Nyx huffed, looking up at her under his long white lashes. When he realized that Mom was going into a drawer to bring out her shear, his brows drooped, and he shimmered into invisibility with the turkey bone in his mouth.
Mom chuckled and closed the drawer.
I hummed while wiping my mouth. Then my eyes caught sight of the triple chocolate muffin on the transparent cake stand with a dome cover.
“Mom, you made muffins and didn’t call me over. You know how much I love these.” I complained, stretching towards the cake stand and taking out the last pastry.
“It’s your father’s favorite.” Mom beamed.
“Well, it’s only fair that I get the last one,” I said matter-of-factly.
My mouth watered as I remembered its delicious flavor. It’s been too long since I had Mom’s pastries. I opened my mouth to take my first bite of its sweetness. The muffin disappeared from my hand in a flash. My brows furrowed and I gasped.
“Hands off the muffin.” Dad was by my side, panting as though he came running in. His right hand held the muffin up.
“Mom said I could have it. The muffin is mine.” I reached for it, and he pulled his hand away.
“Not if you can’t take it from me,” Dad argued, bringing his hand down to munch on it.
“Challenge accepted.” I rasped and delivered an open-hand strike to his hand.
The muffin flew upwards. Our heads raised to lock eyes on the target. Both of us jumped after it. Our emeralds clashed. Dad’s hand reached up. I countered him with a backhand strike while lunging my other hand after the muffin. The man grabbed my lower arm to stop his body from sailing backwards.
The fight ensued.
The muffin began descending. Dad connected a ridge hand strike just under my chin. I cough-groaned and staggered back in the air. I had to grab the edge of the island to stop my fall. Twisting my body, I swiftly pushed myself forward to land on the white countertop.
Mom gasped in utter displeasure.
My victory engrossed me in the moment as I snatched the muffin before Dad did. “Ah! The student has surpassed the master.” I grinned down at him.
Dad growled in annoyance. Before I could blink, he jumped up and attacked me. I swear he became an octopus. With the speed at which his hands moved—like eight tendrils—he struck my neck and chest many times.
To his delight, he robbed me of the pastry again. He landed on the hardwood floor, gloating. “I am still the master.” He smiled at Mom, giving her a flirty wink.
“Mom, Dad took my muffin.” I tried to sound as sad as possible, playing the mama’s boy card, and folded my arms. I had to do it. It was a sure win for me now.
“Vance, give your son the muffin.” Mom coaxed. She moved from around the island, going to him. I smirked.
Livid, Dad’s mouth dropped open to protest. “After all of that, you want me to give ‘my muffin’ away? I won fair and square.”
“Baby, you ate your fair share already. Giving him one won’t kill you.” Mom snaked a hand around his waist with the other hand trying to get the muffin. He held it away from her.
“I could be dying of chocolate deficiency. You wouldn’t know.” Dad shot back in the saddest voice, pouting at his Luna with puppy eyes. “And I ate the muffins because they’re mine. You baked them for me.”
“I’ll bake some more tomorrow.” Mom insisted, doting her blue eyes on him. Her small hands rubbed down the expanse of his back.
Dad’s nostrils flared. His eyes narrowed slits at me. Three seconds passed, and he threw the muffin at me. I caught it and immediately sank my teeth into it.
“Firecat, stop being sweet on other people,” Dad complained, shaking his head. “You’ve got to stop letting just anybody into our home.”
Mom cupped his face and captured his lips. He reciprocated by circling his arms around her and deepening the kiss. I rolled my eyes and cast my gaze to the window. This was the part where they would forget that I existed.
I rubbed the side of my forehead to make myself relax. Raina came to mind. I missed her. I wanted to kiss my own mate too. At this point, my parents’ intimacy got me so irritated. Then I purposely cleared my throat to break them up. Their lips parted with little pecks here and there. I blew out a hard breath and yawned loudly.
“Valen, come off my counter and you better clean off those shoe prints,” Mom warned with stern eyes.
“Yes ma’am. Right after I finish ‘my muffin.” I rubbed it in with a devious grin, gauging his reaction.
Dad clenched his jaws and grumbled to Mom, “Stop letting the neighbor in.”
“Hey! I’m your firstborn.” I huffed, taking offense. The mansion that I built for my family was next door.
“And what’s your point?” Dad raised his brows. A sarcastic smirk tugged on his mouth. “All I see is a pesky neighbor.”
“Boys!” Mom cut us both off, slicing the air with a hand. “We’ve got important matters to discuss. Join me at the table.”

-VALEN’S POV-“The Elder Council has requested an emergency meeting for tomorrow morning.” Mom said, pulling out a black upholstered chair from the black square-shaped breakfast nook by the bay window. She sank into it solemnly.“Whoop-de-fucking-doo.” Dad joined her with a grim sigh and uttered sarcastically. “With all the free time that we have in the world, of course, we can just clear our hectic schedules for them. It’s not like we have over a hundred thousand stray wolves to attend to.”Sharing Dad’s sentiments, I scoffed. I leaned against the island knowing this was coming. An emergency meeting denoted that they weren’t happy.Together with the Alpha King, the Elder council established the law in the days of old. It was always wise for a king to have a body of advisors to ensure the objectivity of viewpoints and recommendations were highlighted to assist the king's decision-making.The hard-nosed elders wanted answers for everything that had happened, rumors and all. Simply put,
-RAINA’S POV-“My prayer is that our moon goddess will help us to grieve in waves. In this mournful period, it feels like the grief is crashing on us like an avalanche, but once we support each other and can be there for each other, the rapid flow of cold despair can melt into gentle healing waves that touch our souls. Soothing, warm waves that will heal us as we face each day together and get through it.” I managed to get through without weeping with as much as I could muster, despite the tightness in my stomach. These broken-spirited wolves made up twenty-seven packs in total. They were a roaring ocean of dread and sorrow. Its heaviness submerged me with overwhelming sadness as my eyes swept across the sea of dejected faces.I was a bundle of nerves as I mulled over things to say to them. At the same time, my heart ached for their suffering.“I stand by you because I understand your pain.” My daughter came to mind. “I know that your loss has been great, and you can’t work it away or
-RAINA'S POV-Warriors were there in an instant, forming a protective horizontal line in front of me. Mom and Venus hurried over to help me. Lifting my head, I raised a hand for them to stay put. Rankled anger scorched my face to crimson and tumultuous energy burst from my pores. My fingers swiped the contents from my face.“Send him out!” Dad seethed. The stunned crowd looked around like this motherfucker's got titanium balls. Then several hands shoved a guy forward. The group parted and he stumbled to the ground. They picked him up and pushed him until he was on all fours before me. With a malicious scowl, he sprang forward. I recoiled.Dad sent a blow to his gut that hurled him backwards, landing on his back. Isaac and Benji took angry strides and grabbed his arms, keeping him on his knees. He wrestled against their restraint.“Nothing you do or say can give me back my mate and son.” The blonde guy yelled at me. Angry tears slid from his blue eyes, down his cheeks. “It should have
-VALEN’S POV-“Valen!” A woman’s voice summoned me.Soft fingers tapped both my cheeks. Swiping blades of consciousness slowly squeegee the windshield of my reality, wiping the sludge of blurriness.“Valen!” It was Mom.The world I knew was coming back to me. Light gradually seeped through my heavy eyelashes. I squeezed my eyes shut before they could flutter open.“Son,” Dad's anxious voice came from above me.“I'm awake.” I breathed out, feeling light-headed.Their eyes were filled with fear and concern as they stared at my splattered-out figure on the floor. Mom was kneeling on my left with Dad on my right, holding me up in a sitting position.“You gave us a scare.” Mom palmed my cheeks. Worry was evident in her icy-blue eyes. Strands of black hair drifted around her face, having fallen from her intricate high ponytail. It was enough of an implication to suggest her stress.“Your energy is off balance. How long has this been going on?” Dad questioned, helping me to sit straighter.“
-RAINA’S POV-For a while, I walked through the area to meet and greet a few Bolivian and Ugandan Elders and Alphas. Venus disappeared, taking the girls with her. It did not bother me. There were so many enthusiastic faces that expected to have a moment with me.Approachable and humble, I interacted with them until my feet hurt, and I decided that it was time to have lunch. Luckily, they freed me from the social binds.“Peaches!” I spotted her under the blue infirmary tent. I waved her over. “Oof!”I bumped into something.No.Someone. Oops!Quickly, I lurched my hand out to grab her arm, keeping her on her feet. I checked on the old, gray-haired, short woman that I almost knocked to the ground. “Oh my gosh! Are you okay?”The wind blew her wizened and straw-like hair as she raised her saggy chin. She wasn’t smiling, but her wrinkled eyes, a deep, amethyst color, laser in on me as if I was her target for the day. Warily, she took my hand in hers. Her touch was light and gentle.“You wa
-RAINA'S POV-Distraught and caught up in my own world as I sat on a cherry log by the punchbowl waterfalls, I stared mindlessly at the crashing stream across from me. It channeled from a narrow hanging gorge, shooting over a ledge and roaring straight into the round plunge pool below. The scene was so glorious that I was fixated on the sky’s sultry reflection that emblazoned onto the clear diamond water surrounding it.The tumultuous ripples robbed me of any hopes for a eureka moment, and more of my not-so peaceful life. The elders gave me the creeps. I couldn't help the awry inkling that churned in my gut.How much did they know?Drawing in a deep breath of the sap, sweet air of citrus, I exhaled lengthily, trying to clear my mind.Venus was right, though. It was a splendid idea to have our lunch picnic on this shallow cliff and to go swimming later at Dovery Falls. Not too long ago, I wandered away from the vivacious group to think about me and Valen, and our future. Only to miss hi
-RAINA’S POV-Theo couldn't wait to bite into the smoked rabbit fast enough. Shimmying and wiggling his butt, he did the tasty food dance as he chomped on it. When he started rocking, you knew it was knocking down that drool from his mouth.Thaines, in his glory, gnawed on a large barbecue rib bone like a feral pup."Bah ha ha!" I couldn't help but laugh as he snapped at Benji's hand when he tried to grab it.Glancing around, I saw everyone in a shining light. Free-spirited and merry. There was no longer a secrecy barrier separating us. This fun funky time was rather refreshing."So, what's up with you cooking an entire butcher shop today, Vee? I mean, it's great, don't get me wrong, but there's so much food!" Penn exclaimed with her lilac eyes sweeping across the delicious feast as she masticated a grilled pork chop.Venus beamed while chewing and twirling her napkin. "There's no such thing as too much food here. Leftovers will go back to the pack house kitchen and won't last long. Mo
-RAINA’S POV-Sloanne’s rejection shattered us all. A gloomy vibe threatened to break up our jovial party. A sadness fell in Zack’s Sacramento green eyes. His features were sullen, confused, and wounded. My heart broke knowing how much this meant to him.“Wiccan obeisance of celibacy?” Zack reiterated lowly. Repressing his disheartened emotions, he wiggled like a grubworm in the weeds that bound him and glanced from Sloanne to Penn to me, and then back at his mate.“There's a lot more to it than that,” Benji explained with hands behind his head, capturing Sloanne’s attention. “Mate bonds are unpredictable because it’s the Moon Goddess that does the matches. She peeks into our souls to make sure we are the perfect fit. Two halves of a whole that bring out the best in each other. You only get one mate in a lifetime. That's why they're so precious."“Yes. Now, please release him.” Penn pleaded, solemnly.“I-I don't know.” Sloanne was hesitant. Her forehead creased with worry because Zack’
VALEN’S POV“Raina is hurting.” Penn interjected, finishing up and discarding the cotton in a bin.“I saw the pain in her eyes when she saw Snow with your baby.” She gazed sadly at Devin and added under her breath. “I can imagine what that feels like.”My Beta averted his eyes to the side of the room, avoiding hers, suddenly unsettled as he scratched behind his ear.I blew out a hard breath. I did not care about what was up with these two. Raina was priority. The mate bond wrenched at me in a silent cry from her that only I could hear. Missing the softness of holding her hands and basking in her endearing presence, hugging, touching, gazing—I just can't go on without it.“I'm pissed too because the future hasn't changed and at some point, you'll give the dick away.” Devin aired bluntly. “How could you? After all those times you swore to me…”“I'll never cheat on Raina.” I cut in sharply, darting daggers at him.Unconvinced, he huffed. Then he spoke again, his voice quieter. "She loves
VALEN’S POVMy eyes snapped open, looking up at the wooden beams in the ceiling in confusion. This was Wolkrane.I can’t be here. Not when I promised Raina to be home by 9 P.M. daily. My head pounded with hazy memories, and I missed her pleasantly cool scent so badly. With her beautiful burgundy...Oh, fuck!I bolted up from the bed, and pain exploded on my side, spasming up and down my torso. Immediately, I glanced down at the three stitches that I just accidentally ripped, blood trickling down my side and into my gray sweatpants.Angry at myself for not knowing how long I’d been asleep, I yanked the IV line from my arm.Cursing silently while gritting my teeth against the agony, I barged out of the bedroom, ignoring the trail of blood I left on the umber-weave pattern of the vinyl plank flooring.Dizzy waves swept over me as I descended the stairs, determined for someone to tell me that it was a damn nightmare. That I imagined it all.“Where is she!” I roared, bulldozing into the sm
RAINA’S POV“Kókkino, I don't know,” Gustav replied with understanding in a low voice. His words lingered, heavy with an edge of doubt. “The sword should have taken his life.”I swallowed hard and confessed dejectedly, “I wanted to believe him, but he can’t be the real Valen.”Gustav hummed thoughtfully and moved to the foot of the bed to remove my shoes.Flashes of the harrowing hurt in the last Valen’s eyes made my forlorn heart sink deeper and deeper. It seemed nearly genuine, yet it was not. It was a mask to get me to lower my guard. I was glad that I didn’t let the bond derail the mission this time.My eyes trailed to my guardian, and I expressed, “The timekeepers were so cruel. This is my ninth trial, and if he's not my Valen, he'll kill me again. As an anomaly, they've cursed me to die over and over.”“Then I will protect you,” Gustav swore, putting down my shoes at the bedside while his gaze met mine. The sincerity and promise were clear in his voice.“How long do you think I
RAINA’S POV I lingered behind Gustav as we arrived by teleportation at a sprawling lakeside manor. With urgency, he stalked off down a corridor that cut straight through the house. I broke off into a little jog to keep up with his large strides. Walking by his side, I felt curious and apprehensive about where he had taken me. Warm tones guided me through the great hall. Feeling antsy, my head pirouetted in the unfamiliar environment. Gaping archways revealed sitting rooms, recreational rooms, a grand dining room, and others. Each was filled with soothing terra cotta tones from walls painted in red earth color. “Nice safe house,” I remarked as he led me up the winding stairs, overwhelmed by the sheer size of it.Layers of vintage finds, painted artwork, and houseplants created a classical, inviting effect across the spaces. Together with white and green accents, the wall's reddish tone produced a muted color scheme that brought a diverse range of furniture pieces in a harmoniously b
VALEN’S POV“Grrr! You are not needed here,” I growled, feeling my skin ripple, pinning the man in place with a murderous glare.“The nerve of that Worgen,” Zeus snarled in my head.Nyx and Zuzu swayed their attention to the obnoxious intruder, waiting for my command to attack him.“Stand down, Nyx. Do not attack him, Zuzu. Hibernate,” Raina commanded them, her back constantly bumped into my chest from her struggle against the grasp I maintained on her arms.It was a shock to see my guardians revert to a leisure position, debunking their fight mode.Raina averted her eyes to the man in full white. “Get me out of here, Gustav.”“Careful, Bluebella. Do not deliberately make me jealous. My wolf is unsettled as it is. You are mine,” I muttered into her ear, and she flinched with resistance.Swinging her sabre-rattling eyes sideways, she expostulated, “I’ll chose him a million times over you, you fake bastard!”What the hell was this? She was protecting him—choosing him?Wanting to go with
VALEN’S POVThe portal spat her out with a thud on the floor of my sanctum in a disheveled mess.“Mate! Mate! Mate!” Zeus purred, going into overdrive to touch what was ours.Thank fuck.“Ugh!” She groaned, landing face-down, and something clattered on the floor. My body jumped to life as her rich scent wrapped around the entirety of my being like thick vines.“She came back to us!” Zeus’ rear end started to twitch and wiggle in excitement to see our beautiful mate.Gladness pumped my heart wildly, and my feet moved briskly before my wolf shouted at me to go to her. Zuzu flapped her giant wings in flight towards her regular spot on a custom-designed tree branch in the corner.I rushed towards Raina, dropping to my knees and gently grabbing her shoulders to help her to stand. My heart danced with delight when the sparks erupted across my palms from the skin-to-skin contact.“She’s back,” Zeus howled in my chest with joy and enthusiasm, jumping up on his two hind legs.Raina's legs gave
VALEN’S POVEighty-four hours.Three and a half days. It’s been that long since I’ve been home and without my precious Luna. Precious time was being wasted when I should have been able to go after her. That knowledge and helplessness weighed heavy on my chest, obstructing every labored inhale.Detached from everything, I wallowed in heart-shattering misery. With a deep scowl, I ran my thumb over the inscriptions of the golden bracelet as my mind worked overtime. My brain felt like it was on a treadmill, unable to stop.At this point, my eyes were hooded and void and my brain wasn't far from becoming the same. Frazzled and throbbing.“You’re the reason she disappeared.” Zeus snarled in my head, castigating me for putting Vaheed over our mate. He rambled, “If we weren’t away, we would have been here to stop her. I told you to leave him alone, but no, you had to go and bring him back. Are you trying to make us mateless?”My throat was too parched to argue with him.The worst had happened
VALEN’S POVAll their heartbeats rose, thundering against their chests. Devin quickly scurried over to the witch’s side.My eyebrows met. My face scrunched up and I pointed at Penn. My voice was incensed, and my teeth clashed together. “You let her go?”They visibly sagged under the weight of my temper. Anger pulsed through my chest, the upcoming headache didn't help his bitch fit either.“Well, I—um, I, er,” Pennelope stuttered and Devin frowned, spinning around to cup her face before facing me again.Letting out a breath of disbelief, I felt like my whole world was caving in. My vision went spotty as I pictured Raina lost and on her own in an unfamiliar world, and this witch did nothing to help her when she had the means.“It’s not that simple. I tried to stop her…” Penn explained, shaking her head, and went into more detail, stumbling over her words. “...once she saw Snow, she decided to go AWOL.”"Slow down, Penn." Devin guided me because at this point she was mumbling, and I didn
VALEN’S POV “Beta?” I scowled in the witch's basement after descending the last step of the stairs.Thick tension greeted me. One built on apprehension and fear. They were as scared as a kitten that had just noticed the shadow of a dog’s tail lashing against a white wall. I could feel the weight of their trepidatious stares pressing against me. Their fretting, whispering thoughts practically radiated off them like static.Zeus growled low and ferociously in my chest, unsettled by the hangdog silence. The implication of guilt hung heavily in the air.My anxious eyes roamed every inch of the space, skipping through the bookshelves, futons, chairs, and stone tables seeking the one woman that my soul ached for. Seeing no trace of her, my longing hammered our bond with impatience. An outburst climbed up my throat to be lashed out, only to be hindered when Venus flew at me. I swallowed the impending words. She gripped the front of my black shirt and tugged it repeatedly. Immense anxiety fu
