"You're only refusing your true feelings because Emerson is here," Trey continues, his voice growing bolder. "Come on, Mina. What does he have over you? What's the hold that he has on you?"

Mina frowns. "What the hell are you talking about, Trey?"

"That kiss had nothing to do with Emerson?" Trey challenges, tilting his head. "Really? While he's standing right there? He's the reason you're acting like this." His voice lowers, insistent, manipulative. "Let me ask you something, Mina. If Emerson wasn't here right now, would you be acting this scandalized? I mean, you already admitted you kissed me back to know how it felt. Would you be denying it so hard if he wasn’t watching?"

Mina's jaw tightens. "I'm not denying anything, Trey," she says, her voice slow, controlled. Too quiet.

Trey studies her. "So what are you trying to say, Mina? Do you feel something for me or not? Because I'm sure even Emerson wants to know."

My entire body stiffens at his words. I watch as Mina flicks her gaze to

She doesn’t want to go to dinner with you. So now, take your flowers and go."I turn to him, caught off guard by his words. As much as I hate to admit it, there’s some truth in them, isn’t there? Mina didn’t invite me here. She didn’t agree to have dinner with me. So what the hell am I still doing here? But leaving isn’t an option. Not now.So instead of walking out, I shrug and take a seat.Trey blinks. "Alright, you’re gonna sit here. Fine. In that case, I’m gonna take Mina to dinner. Emerson looks at me like I’ve betrayed him—as if I’ve cheated. But that’s not the case."Emerson," I say, forcing strength into my voice. "I did not cheat on you. You broke up with me. If you’ve forgotten, let me remind you—you’re the one who ended things. You told me to be with whoever I wanted."His jaw clenches.I cross my arms, meeting his gaze. "So what if I kissed Trey? So what if I wanted to see what else was out there? The only man I had ever been with before you was Eric. Emerson lets out a sad laugh, shaking his head as if he can’t understand what’s so difficult about this."What’s so hard about it?" he asks." Don't act like you don't know..." I answer narrowing my eyes at him. "You love me. I love you. I don’t see anything complicated about that. If we want to be together, we can be together. I more than just want to be with you, Mina. So it’s up to you. We can get married again. We can have the life we want. It is that easy. You’re the one making it complicated."I take a deep breath, calming myself down."No, Emerson. It’s not that easy," I say, my voice firm but soft. "I’ve been through a lot since we went our separate ways. I can’t just say yes tonight and expect everything to go back to normal."I exhale slowly, choosing my words carefully."Do I love you, Emmerson? Yes. Do you make me happy? Yes. And I know that asking him inside is not the right move.I shake my head, still smiling. "I'm sorry, Daddy, I can't," I say, placing my hand on his chest, and pushing him a little farther away.He raises an eyebrow, tilting his head slightly. "Why?""Because we have house rules," I tease. So, I took the initiative for him."Eric just came to see me," I said, keeping my voice light. "He heard I was pregnant and wanted to tell me how happy and excited he was that he’s getting a sibling."I turned to Eric and gave him a small smile."We were just hashing out our little differences," I continued, "because now, we’re going to be a real family."Eric stood up abruptly, nodding his head. "Yeah, yeah, yeah… I’m just gonna— I’m gonna go."Emerson watched him closely. "Okay. Did you need anything?"Eric didn’t look fine. His usual sharp presence was replaced by something… lost.He just kept nodding. "I just— I have to clear my head. I’m just— I’m going to go."Emerson stepped aside, allowing him to pass. Eric walked out without another word.

"I have never been serious about something as much as I am serious about this—about us."He leaned forward, his eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made my skin crawl. "Mina, what’s stopping you? What’s keeping you back?"I opened my mouth, ready to tell him exactly what was stopping me, but he cut me off before I could even form the words."I know you don’t love my father," he pressed on. "I mean, you two weren't even together a few days ago. And suddenly, the moment he finds out you’re pregnant, you’re back together? Just like that?" He scoffed. "You and I both know that’s not real. He turned towards Madeline. "Madeline, I’m sure you’ve prepared the soup, can you bring it up in about 15 minutes so I can help her get showered and changed?"Madeline nodded, looking at me. "Of course."With that, Madeline left towards the kitchen, and everyone else dispersed. Emerson then carried me up the stairs. He prepared the bath for me, making sure the water temperature was just right. We then found ourselves in a debate about whether he should give me a bath. Of course, he won, insisting that I needed help. There was something tender in the way he handled me, every movement was made with love and care. She looked at me with that twisted, dark smile, the one that told me she thought she had won. As if she had accomplished exactly what she came here to do. But she was still standing in my room, still breathing the same air as me, still existing in my space, and I couldn’t take it. The anger, the pain, the years of resentment came over me. My voice came out in a scream, raw and filled with fury. "Get out! Get out, get out, get out!" The door burst open. A nurse rushed in, followed closely by Trey. His eyes darted between me and my mother, concern into his face. "What’s going on?" he demanded. "Mina, what happened?" I pointed a shaking hand at Kristy. "I don’t want to see this woman ever again in my life!" My voice was hoarse, but I didn’t care. "I’ll get a restraining order if I have to. If I ever see you again, I swear I will make you regret it." The words cut through the air.

"To prove that you actually are part of this family."A disbelieving chuckle slipped past my lips, but my mother didn’t flinch. She pressed on as if she truly believed she held all the power in this conversation."You’re going to call Eric," she continued. "You’re going to tell him that everything that happened with Trey was wrong. You're going to talk to Trey and convince him to tell Eric that maybe he was lying. Just… find something. By the time we turned back towards the room, we noticed that the doctor had already left. I guess there had been too much crying in the room. I found myself laughing. "I'm so happy, Emerson." A fear that told me he was bracing himself for the worst.I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Before I could even attempt to find them, Trey spoke up. “We’re still waiting for the results. There hasn’t been a concrete answer yet.”Emerson exhaled, his shoulders losing a fraction of their tension. “What do you mean, concrete answer? What did the doctor say? What could it be?”“It’s fine,” I said quickly, nodding as I squeezed his hand. “Just wait for the results.”He looked at me, then at our intertwined fingers, and for some reason, my hands were trembling. Then he turned to Trey. “Treyson, can I talk to you aside for a minute?”Panic spiked in my chest.
