Emmerson finally asked after what felt like hours, where the two of us sat in a room that felt a little too small for the both of us.

I just couldn't. I couldn't let him see how he affected me.

I didn't want to sound rude. I didn’t want him to know how much I didn’t want him here. How much I couldn’t handle him being here. But I couldn't be rude about it, either.

I didn’t want him to misunderstand, to think something that wasn’t true. Even though I couldn’t tell him the truth.

"No, it's not about that, Emerson. It’s about..." I hesitated, my throat suddenly dry. "Look, I’m trying to prove something to myself. Just let me work on it."

He let out a slow breath, tilting his head as if he was trying to read me. "Nobody is stopping you, Mina. I do want you to work on it. I already gave it to you. But I’m just saying—it’s not a bad idea if we put our heads together. It should probably take thirty minutes, an hour max."

My eyes snapped up. Thirty minutes? One hour?

Does he know how hard thi

He hopes We can talk about this… as a family."I let out a bitter laugh. "A family?" I repeated, "I’m sorry, Mina," Emerson said.Emmerson exhaled sharply beside me. "Look, it’s okay if you don’t want to go to the police," he said, quieter now. "But actually, I think you should press charges. And I will support you all the way. We were at work when He attacked you. You have witnesses. You have me. I’m behind you, no matter what you decide."Silence settled over the room as both men were watching me now, waiting.Waiting for my reaction.Waiting for me to decide.I sat there, my thoughts pressing down on me. Eric and all his foolishness had once filled my mind, but now, sitting here with both Emerson and Trey, the drive I had once had for revenge seemed to fade.A Part of me, the bitter part that ha

And you guessed it right—just when we were about to start locking up the office, Emerson finally called me."Hey, I'm sorry to get back to you so late," he said. His voice was fine, but there was something else there—hesitation, maybe.I sighed. "What is it?""I told Rita," he said, "and she just told me she is on her way with Eric right now.""What?" I nearly dropped my phone. "No! That was not the deal!""I know, I understand," Emerson said quickly. "I told her to come alone. She just called me now and told me to tell you that she was on her way to your office with Eric."I pinched the bridge of my nose. "I don’t care if she’s on her way. I’m already locking up the office and going back to my apartment to take a long bubble bath and a long sleep. If they won’t agree to my demands, tell them that I am going to the police station first thing tomorrow and taking this case forward."Emerson exhaled. "Okay. Whatever you decide, as I told you, I’m good with whatever you decide. I just wa

Trey nodded slowly. "I get it. I do. But I just… I just want this legal thing out of the way.""And what do you suggest, Trey?" I asked, crossing my arms."He told me that this wasn’t his wife’s fault. It was his fault. So he wants to be the one to apologize. He doesn’t think Rita really needs to apologize for anything. That’s why they wanted to come together."I laughed bitterly. "No. What they wanted was to attack me. To surprise me and catch me off guard. If that wasn’t the case, why didn’t they call me first? Why did they call Emerson instead?" My voice rose in frustration. "I told them I wouldn’t meet Eric without you and Emerson there. But instead, they decided to show up at my office—right when I was locking up, right when there was nobody else in the office. What do you think that was, Trey? If not an ambush?"Trey exhaled, his shoulders dropping. "I get it. I understand. That’s why they agreed to do it properly this time. Emerson will be there. I will be there. But Eric s

I watched as Rita waved a dismissive hand at Rachel, her perfectly manicured nails glinting under the office lights. "You don’t have sparkling water?" she asked, her voice laced with exaggerated disappointment.Rachel’s smile was tight, her patience wearing thin. "I’ll check, Mrs. Blackwind."Rita gave a small, satisfied nod and leaned back against the couch, rubbing her belly in slow, deliberate circles.I folded my hands on my desk, tilting my head slightly. "You’re glowing, Rita. Pregnancy looks good on you."She beamed. "Oh, Mina, that’s so sweet of you to say. Not that I need to hear it—I see it in the mirror every morning. I wish every woman would experience this..." She let out a light, tinkling laugh. "Eric can't keep his hands off me. He says I’ve never looked better. But I think it’s the hormones, you know? "I nodded, offering her a polite smile. "Must be."Rachel returned a moment later, setting down a chilled bottle of sparkling water on the table. "Here you go."Rita

I interrupted her. I couldn’t let her finish whatever stupid thing she was about to say."A relationship? A friendship? A family?" I scoffed. "With me? You and I were never family. You and I were never friends. You were a blood-sucking vampire, my enemy—disguising yourself as my friend, as my family. And now that your true colours are out, don’t you ever think or consider me as such again. You and I were done the day you decided to backstab me and then continue smiling in my face."Rita’s lips parted as if she wanted to say something, but I wasn’t done."But Mina—""Your time is up," I cut her off coldly."Then why did you ask me here?" she blurted, her voice rising. "Why am I here, Mina? Why did you ask me here if you didn’t even want to mend our relationship? I thought that—"I let out a sharp, humourless laugh. "Really? Rita stood there, eyes narrowing, as she began her tirade, words pouring out of her like acid."You like acting like a know-it-all all, smart and intelligent, getting all the attention, thinking you know everything," she scoffed. "You didn't listen to Mom, acted like reality didn't exist. It was just you and Dad, always just you and Dad, and you would come to me and cry about 'Mom not loving you.' You confided in me and made me your confidant because you couldn't even make friends of your own. I had to be your friend, and I was younger than you. Couldn't you get friends your own age? But no, you had to turn to me because nobody even wanted to spend time with you."I reminded myself to keep silent, letting her vent, though I could feel my temper rising with each word."And then guess what?" she went on. "Dad died, and you had nobody. So you started getting attention from Eric and his father. When Eric divorced you, guess whose bed you jumped into... You're

It took Eric two days—two whole days—before he finally decided to come and apologize to me.I was at home that Sunday when Trey walked in and announced, "Eric called."I looked at him and said, "Hey, I thought the two of you were friends, and you hang out, so why are you telling me if he calls you? I don't care..."Trey took a sip of his drink. "I'm telling you since he called because he wanted to come and apologize.""So, it took him two days to decide that he wants to come and apologize?" I asked, raising an eyebrow."Hey, don’t kill the messenger. You should know that after you talked with Rita, he was kind of upset. She said you said some mean things to her, and, you know, it affected her more than she let on or whatever. Naturally, Eric was angry." Trey shrugged. "That’s why it took him so long to come and apologize. It’s not because he was trying to pull anything. • MARRYING My FATHER-IN-LAW    Epilogue

Mina I was in the delivery room about to bring my baby into this world, and who knew it hurt like hell? Mmh! I was very lucky and very grateful to have my husband here with me. He kept holding my hand, telling me sweet things, and encouraging me when the doctors told me to push. He pushed with me, breathed with me. It was kind of crazy. I don't know, maybe after I was done here I would think about this moment and laugh about it. It was a moment in my life when I really needed him, and I was so, so happy and so grateful to have him here beside me. The two doctors that Mr. Emerson insisted on having here were top in their fields. He didn’t care, he had to fly one in as long as I got everything and I was in great hands. The doctors were great, they were encouraging. I just wanted this moment to be over and for my baby to come into this world so I could hear their cry. We were still in the dark; we didn’t know if we were having a girl or a boy. I was just waiting for that moment wh

  • MARRYING My FATHER-IN-LAW    Emmerson - The Reason

EmmersonThe next morning, I decided to handle things myself. I know Mina’s already been through enough trauma with her family, so I don’t want to involve her in this. She’s still asleep, and I slip out quietly to deal with Eric.I find him at the hotel, slumped over, still asleep. I nudge him with the toe of my shoe, the force making him stir. Slowly, his eyes flicker open, and the haze of sleep and alcohol makes him groggy. He rises, blinking and groaning, his hand clutching his head."Wake up, Eric," I tell him as I open the curtains, letting the bright light flood the room. He immediately shields his eyes, groaning louder."My head... hurts," he mutters, his voice thick with a hangover. He grabs the bottle of water on the bedside table and gulps down a large portion in one go."Last night," he laments, "I didn't like how your men dragged me out of that nightclub.""You call that a nightclub? It was a strip

EmmersonOh yeah?” Mina’s voice is a little high-pitched.And then Rita says something that makes my blood cold.“Of course,” she replies, her voice dripping with arrogance. “I mean if I could take Eric from you so easily before… When you weren’t this heavily pregnant, and we weren’t even living in the same house. Just think how simple it would be to take his father from you now.”Her voice is low and suggestive. Mina scoffs, maybe out of shock, but Rita doesn’t stop.“I mean, look at you,” she continues, mockingly. “You’re pregnant. You can’t even walk properly without someone holding you. You have to be carried just to get around.” She chuckles,“And me?” she adds. “I’m just getting started. The exercises I’ll do, the maintenance I’ll keep up… You know I won't be breastfeeding, right? This baby is feeding from the bottle. Nothing is messing up this....hot body.”In my mind, I can already picture her motioning to her bo

  • MARRYING My FATHER-IN-LAW    Emmerson -The Death

Emmerson By nightfall, the police have already paid us a visit. It’s all over the news. Madeline had a little accident on the highway. Her car hit the side of a bridge and went down under. She suffocated. But I know the truth. Let her feel what it’s like to lose air. Anyway, the point is—she’s dead. The police came because, after her attack on Mina, there was already a record of her actions. They were just here to deliver the report. To tell us that she was gone. That also settled the issue with Rose. Mina had never been convinced that Rose was behind it, and now that Madeline was out of the picture, it was clear she had been wrongfully accused. Mina was shocked with the news, I never thought she would actually be upset after everything. Even though there’s still sadness in her eyes, I can see the difference. She’s no

EmmersonAfter I had taken Mina home, I gave her a bath, making sure she was okay and taken Care of. She was reluctant to eat at first, but I insisted. “You need nutrition,” I reminded her. “I know you don't want to but do it for the baby. You’re pregnant, you're doing it for our baby.”She sighed, but eventually gave in, taking small sips of the warm soup I had prepared. I watched her closely, ensuring she had everything she needed. Then, I sat her down and gently caressed her hair.I kept talking as I did it—about everything and nothing at the same time. Just filling the silence, making sure she felt covered and safe. My voice was low and comforting. I caressed her head, feeling the softness of her scalp, letting her know she wasn’t alone. And then, she fell asleep.Once I was sure she was deep in rest, I finally allowed myself to feel it all—the anger, the frustration, the overwhelming sense of failure. How could I h

As Emerson's voice continued on the phone, offering words of comfort, trying to calm me, I felt my tears flow faster. I couldn't hear him clearly anymore over the noise in my head, the panic, the certainty that I was going to die. I just listened to him, letting his voice be a thread tying me to something. Then, the banging stopped.I hadn't even realized it.Instead, a knock. A soft, reassuring knock."Mina, Mina, come on, open the door," Emerson's voice came through the phone, clearer now.I still didn’t understand what was happening. My mind was so clouded by fear, but hearing his voice… it soothed me in ways I couldn’t explain. I was barely aware of his words, just the sound of him calling my name, telling me it was okay."Emerson, is that you?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper."Yes, it's me. Open the door, Mina."The reality of it hit me. I had been trapped in a nightmare, my heart frozen with terror, bu

"What did you write so fast?"She stalked toward me, snatched the paper out of my hands, and read it. Her expression darkened, and before I could brace myself, she slapped me hard across the face. The force nearly knocked me out of the chair.A sharp sting spread across my cheek, my vision blurred for a second. My entire face tingled from the impact, and I gritted my teeth, refusing to let a single tear fall.Who knew I would ever be in this situation? Kidnapped at gunpoint. Forced to write my own suicide letter.Madeline took a deep breath, trying to regain her composure. Then she smirked."You're smart, Mina. We can argue about a lot of things, but not that.
