Ophelia

Ryker stood, a growl ripping through his chest. “What the fuck is this? Who are you?” His tone left no room for questions.

“He’s a dead man walking.” Jude said flatly.

It was horrible of me to hope and pray that Alpha Hunter lost his life here tonight, but I did. Goddess, I prayed for it harder than I’d ever prayed for anything.

Too bad Alpha Hunter was smarter than that.

Alpha Hunter tipped his head to the side, his blonde locks skillfully messy. Even now, several of the girls nearby were sizing him up, coy smiles lighting their faces.

“I—” Hunter gazed down at me, genuinely confused. “I thought you were going to tell them about us?” He blinked the unease from his eyes and smiled at Ryker, oozing confidence. “I’m Alpha Hunter. Opal and I dated way back when. We recently rekindled things, so I wanted to surprise her with a visit.”

Ryker’s eyes grew bright with murder. The sand around his feet kicked up, “You dared come to my pack without asking permission? Do you truly think t

Ophelia “Hey, Coop. Why don’t you spark up a couple of joints? It’ll help us relax before the ritual.” Coop tugged me outside the sliding glass doors and onto the small patio. Sarah was perched on Arielle’s lap, twirling one of her girlfriends braids around her finger. The two broke into grins as they spotted us. “Fuck, I’m so ready to get this done with.” Arielle huffed, snatching the joint from Coop mere seconds after he lit the thing. She exhaled a puff of smoke into the air, “I’m practically shaking, I’m so nervous.” Sarah planted a kiss on Arielle’s lips, swiping the joint from her fingers. “After this we’ll have our own coven. No one will fuck with us ever again.” With each puff my nerves began to ease. A weightlessness settled over me, making me forget all about dark bonds and unavailable Alpha’s. Once the joint was nothing more than a stub, we headed inside. Denver had moved to another point of the circle, leaving his back facing us. I looked over his shoulder, down at th

JudeOne Hour Ago…I landed in the empty lot outside my place, feathers cascading down around me like wisps of shadow.Rage boiled in my veins, clogging my lungs until I could no longer breathe. I wanted to scream. I wanted to unleash every fucking ounce of my power until the sky cracked in two.I could still hear her sweet little voice in my ears, and I hated it. I hated what it did to me. What she did to me.My mate.My. Fucking. Mate. The girl I dreamed about as a little boy long before my mother and her sick friends destroyed every loving bone in my body. Please, she had said, begging me not to kill the sack of flesh she claimed to be dating.I stormed up to the front of my place and slammed my fist into the metal siding. It did nothing to quell the desire to storm back there and kill that shitstain of an Alpha right in front of her.Feeling like this was completely out of my wheelhouse. I didn’t feel shit! I landed another punch and felt my knuckles split this time, coating the m

Jude Her chapped lower lip quivered. “You’re a monster.” “You have no idea.” I started with Jameson, strapping him to the table and slicing the jumpsuit from off his body. He screamed pitifully as I cut his pinky off, but not as loudly as Chloe did when I tossed the bloody digit at her head. As much as I wanted to rage and tear Jameson to shreds, my work was methodic. In between the cuts and burns I asked questions about Alpha Hunter, none of which he answered. In fact, none of the coven members confessed the truth. Jameson spoke in between sobs, “I-I told you, man. Alpha H-Hunter wanted to come here for some c-chick. That redheaded girl in your coven, O—” I held the scalpel between his legs, “Say her name and the next body part I remove is your cock.” “He came here to see her. He didn’t want Alpha Ryker knowing.” I looked over at my brother, waiting for his decision. He tucked his phone into the pocket of his suit jacket and frowned at the six of them. OpheliaEven as Jude’s scent wrapped around me, mixing with the warmth of his body to slowly coax me into awareness, there was a part of me that didn’t want to wake up.I wished I could forget. I wished I could write it all off as one big nightmare, but the moment my eyes fluttered open I knew that would never be the case.Arielle, Sarah, Denver…they had been torn apart. And Coop, kind-hearted, goofy Coop was possessed. It was a fate worse than death.Trauma was a cage forcing you to relieve the darkest moments of your life, and that’s exactly what happened as I sat up in bed, pulling myself out of Jude’s hold. My stomach twisted until I keeled over, dry heaving until my eyes watered. It wasn’t until I felt Jude’s hand on my back, rubbing it in soft, awkward circles that I finally snapped back into the present and remembered he was here.We locked eyes, and I hated what I saw there.Jude, the psychopath, the enforcer who killed mercilessly, was looking at me with pity.I scooted furth

OpheliaThat day, after Jude and Ryker reluctantly left, I set about making the first of many changes.Neither one of my mates wanted to go, but I couldn’t get things done with them hovering over my shoulder, constantly waiting for me to break. Little did they know I was already broken. This was me piecing myself back together, and it was something I needed to do on my own. Letting them do it for me would’ve been easier, but it would’ve resulted in me being even more attached to them than I already was.If Ryker could bottle all his emotions up, and Jude could funnel his into rage, then I could do the same.First thing first, I tossed out every crumb of Dark Matter I owned. Every speck hidden in the back of the top drawer of my bedside table was thrown into the trash, consumed by the smoldering embers of what had once been my favorite sundress and jacket. The mere scent of the herb brought me back to last night, causing me to run to the toilet before I could vomit on the floor.I skip

OpheliaThe next three days went exactly the same.Ryker would pick me up early in the morning, always with breakfast despite me having absolutely no appetite, to take me to the library where I’d read everything I could get my hands on until my classes started in the evening. He didn’t comment on the bags forming under my eyes, or the fact that I’d worn the same long sleeve t-shirt twice in a row. Just as he didn’t comment on the slight tremor in my hands, or the fact that I was more irritable than usual.I could tell he wanted to. I could practically feel his brain working every time he noticed an after effect of trauma or the withdrawal of the Dark Matter, but he didn’t.He continued to try and take care of me though, being there for me in his own way.So long as I ate what food he brought me, he didn’t blink when I snuck into the crafting lab to pilfer ingredients for various potions and spells. It was oddly calming having him there, interjecting with tips that might enhance my spe

OpheliaA wave of nausea hit me at the sight. My fingers trembled, and not from the Dark Matter withdrawal.Dark Bonds weren’t well known. In most packs they were nothing more than twisted folklore, legends of darkness and slavery. Even now, I had no clue how Alpha Hunter knew about them. I had thought it was an infected mate bond until he told me the truth that terrible day.I quickly devoured the text, latching onto the bits of history that detailed the festering mark on my wrist. In 1492 Alpha King Archibald Westland retaliated after a Luna of a nearby settlement rejected his advances for marriage. Desiring offspring with her powerful magic, the Alpha King called forth his witch practitioners, each one masters in the dark arts. On the night of the Blood Moon, Alpha King Archibald Westland sacrificed seven of his strongest warriors to summon forth the father of all demons. The demon granted the Alpha King with magic of his own, along with the ability to bestow a mark containing pur

OpheliaI looked up at her, scanning my eyes over the sheer cardigan, pink blouse, and dark slacks she wore. “Yes?” Her eyes crinkled at the corners, “I noticed you’ve been in here a lot this week studying. I know exams are awhile away, but I wanted to offer you something that might help with your…ah, spells.” She motioned for me to follow, and I did. “These rooms are typically reserved for seniors since they aren’t as reckless with their magic, but I think a safe space to practice might do you some good.”The Librarian led me down a hall to the left of the room, one hidden behind the third row of book cases. Along the walls were doors trimmed in silver. They had symbols stamped on them in dark paint. She unlocked the first door with a standard metal key and ushered me inside. The room was entirely empty apart from a metal table against the far wall. One look and I knew it was bolted down. In between the light fixtures embedded into the ceiling were heavy duty sprinklers.“What is th

OpheliaCome on, baby. You’re smarter than this. They were wrong, the two of them. They didn’t know the truth. All they knew was what we were shown the day we scried. I was sure I could’ve found a way to show them the truth myself, but was there a point? Did I really want them on my side? They weren’t on it before. Why would they be now?Just two days later I managed to evade Edward and shift into my wolf to run to the library. I needed to research what might’ve happened to my mother’s soul without him hovering over my shoulder. Surprisingly, Jude and Ryker had been busy the past couple of days. Neither one bothered to tell me what they were doing, but I didn’t care.A twinge started in my chest.Correction, the mate-bond cared. As soon as the library’s door closed behind me I shuffled behind the nearest stack and followed it deeper into the room. There were a few students seated at tables in front of the librarian’s desk. I’d have to avoid them. Word traveled fast when you were a par

OpheliaIt was tempting to change into something flat and lifeless. Some black scrap of fabric that would act as armor between me and the world. I was going to conjure something along those lines when I turned and caught a glimpse of the sunset through the window. The sun was hovering just a few inches above the ocean, painting the waves in such vibrant color that they looked like a sea of living flame. It was life and beauty, and I wanted to hold onto that even if it were for just a night.I conjured something simple. Something that wasn’t quite the old me, but also wasn’t quite the new me either. The sundress had thin straps that tied at the shoulders, along with a square neckline that showed off my chest and throat. The fabric was a rich green and soft to the touch, with a lace overlay embroidered with black roses. A slit ran up the side, exposing my bare foot and part of my calf.I held my breath as I emerged into the kitchen. There were warriors everywhere, lounging and grabbing

OpheliaThe ripples in the water fell flat and the herbs began to float to the surface. I stared at them, watching them swirl around and around, while my silencing spell slowly crumbled.Edward walked back in as the final shards of it disintegrated. He leaned against the doorframe, arms folded over his chest. The picture of wealth and good genetics. His lips quirked up into a self-satisfied smirk as he caught me staring.I didn’t have it in me to tell him I wasn’t checking him out in that way.I tried to picture myself standing by Edward’s side—by any male’s side that wasn’t Ryker or Jude. It wasn’t just the bond that revolted at the thought, but my very soul. I wanted to tip my head back and laugh up at the heavens. I wanted to demand an audience with the goddess. With the damned deity who gave me three Alpha-hole mates.Even worse, I was fairly sure I’d never be able to feel anything for another man in my life. Wait … that might be a good thing.I was halfway through planning my lif

Ophelia“Are you sure about this, dad? They’re going to try and use the bond against me.” I winced and rubbed my chest. The phantom ache was right there, stronger than ever. If I listened hard enough, I could hear it urging me to them. “It’s not the most pleasant thing, but I can resist. I’ll do what needs to be done, I promise.”The words tasted like poison, sweet and deadly.Edwards shock turned to disbelief. He looked up at me again and shook his head, miming zipping his lips. I held up a hand and told him to wait. He thought my father would be angry with me, but he didn’t know my father the way I did.My father wasn’t like his.“I know you will, my girl.” Warmth filled his voice. “Accept the Romero brother’s terms. You’ll spend your days with Edward seeing to our plans, and your nights under their roof. There are ways to temporarily dull the effects of a mate-bond. The ingredients are hard to come by, but I’ll have a friend procure them and bring them to the island. It may take a

Ophelia“They won’t get away with this,” Edward snarled.Ever since the others left he’d been on edge. The vine situation didn’t help his mood, but I wasn’t sure that was what had him all worked up. One look at his pink cheeks and I could tell it definitely wounded his pride a little, but this was something else.Shaking his head, he flicked his sun-bleached hair out of his eyes. They were the color of the ocean, and that should have been enticing considering I loved the waves surrounding Lunar Isle, but I felt nothing when I looked into them.“Their family has done nothing but suppress the people since they stepped into power. There hasn’t been a good Alpha since Alpha Lorenzo. That’s Alpha Ryker’s grandfather if you weren’t already aware.” Pulling back his shoulders splayed each hand out on the counters surface and leaned forward so that our eyes were level. “You won’t be staying with them. I won’t let it happen, and more importantly, your father won’t let it happen.”Who was he to

OpheliaThis was not going to go well.I looked around at the sea of familiar faces staring out at me. Ryker, Jude, Sterling, Nova, and Edward all scattered about, perched in seats around a rattan dining table.“You didn’t tell me we were getting the Brady bunch back together.”“You are still a part of this coven, Ophelia. As a coven we make decisions together. It’s important we stick to that now that we have a new member.” Ryker replied from his place at the head of the table. His hands sat clasped in front of him. A strip of tanned skin peaked out from his shirt where the fabric was unbuttoned. I caught a glimpse of hard muscle as he leaned forward in his seat.He continued speaking, but my mind was lost. Snagged on something he had previously said.… now that we have a new member …Astrid was a part of our coven now. I knew this would happen when I made the decision to put Kimberly in that room, but for some reason it hadn’t hit me as real until now.Goddess, did she know? The shar

OpheliaSomething very strange was going on here.Edwards kindness stretched far beyond wanting me to know the layout of the top floor. Far beyond the odd lingering glances and the pathetic attempts at joking, and far beyond merely wanting to ensure my safety by suggesting I pick the bedroom directly next door to his.Not happening, buddy.Maybe if I were that girl—the one I was before—I would have fallen for it, but I wasn’t and so I recognized the signs immediately. There was no mistaking that pit in the center of my gut, the one that filled with dread and paranoia the longer I thought about his odd behavior.Edward Van Houten was flirting with me.No, I didn’t have much experience with men. Most of said experience was with Ryker and Jude, anyway. That didn’t mean I couldn’t tell when a male was interested in me.After choosing a room far away from his I locked myself away within it. I didn’t spare a glance at the four-postered bed or the wall of glass to my left, one that gave a pe

OpheliaWe ran into a familiar face just outside of La Stella.“Ophelia?”Nova stood a few feet away from the back-alley door leading into the club. She wasn’t wearing her usual lacey, coquette clothing. The babydoll dresses, Mary Jane shoes, and frilly socks were her staple. Her outfits were what drew my attention when we first met. This time there were no bows in her hair or eyeshadow on her lids. It was exhaustion she wore. Her eyes darted around before settling on us. Something had her on edge. Nova wasn’t usually this flighty.“Nova.”I meant for her name to come out as nothing more than a passing greeting, a wall thrown up between two people who had once been friends, but instead it came out like a projectile. The stupid drink that heightened my emotions was still screwing with me.Stupid, it had been so very stupid taking a sip of that drink without confirming it had been the right one. I’d been distracted from the girls slamming into me, but that was no excuse. I had only mysel

RykerI had never paid much attention to what women wore. To get my attention they typically dressed themselves in the finest clothing they had. Jewelry, heels, gowns, the works. They thought it impressed me. It should have.I liked Ophelia most when she wore those small jean shorts that hugged her bottom while she ran across the beach. The little lace tank top she paired with it barely concealed her perky breasts. It wasn’t at all modest, but she was oblivious to that fact. Tomorrow she’d quietly whine and pout, muttering about the horrible sunburn she had. A sunburn that traveled down her chest to the soft swells I wanted to taste.Ophelia was the warmth of Lunar Isle. She was the brightest of colors and softest of sounds. The memory left as quickly as it had come.We talked as we danced. She had her back flush against my chest, her chin tipped to the side as she spoke. Back and forth we went. She was intoxicated from something and would need to be watched. As for me, I was drunk on
