Ophelia

Alpha Hunter’s call effectively threw me off for the remainder of the day.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get my hands to stop shaking. I spilled freshly polished silverware, dropped glasses, and knocked over flower arraignments. Cleaning up the messes I made wasted even more time, yet I couldn’t force myself to calm down.

Eventually I succumbed to the temptation and went out back to where the dumpsters resided in a fenced off area. Hidden between the two metal monstrosities, I struck a match and took a deep drag of the shriveled joint I’d been carrying around.

On the first inhale, shame hit me upside the head.

This wasn’t who I was, who I wanted to be. Like a piece of fruit dropped one too many times, my flesh was bruising and rotting from within.

On the second inhale, I felt nothing at all.

After carefully snuffing the embers out on the ground, I stuck the joint back in my pocket. It was now half the length of my pinky. A few more puffs and I’d have to throw it away.

OpheliaI’d managed to make it to the front door without stumbling or tipping sideways when the sudden roar of a motorcycle sounded somewhere close by. Within a blink, it crested the small hill leading into the neighborhood.Had I been sober, I might’ve jumped when a sleek, black bike sped up the driveway, skidding to a stop mere inches from where I stood. The person riding it was tall, with a lean body compacted with muscle. Even with the black helmet and tinted visor, my heart knew who sat atop the bike.Unable to stop myself, I drank him in. The combat boots on his feet were worn, as were the torn jeans that hugged his thick thighs. They led up to a studded leather jacket fitted over a white cotton—Well, it should’ve been white, but it was stained red. Some of the color had dried, fading into a deep maroon. My stomach twisted uncomfortably. It was blood on his shirt. Blood clinging to the dark tattoo that wrapped around his throat.Nova paused and gave the driver a bland look, “Ni

OpheliaMy head began swimming the moment the main course was brought out. Staring down at the headless fish on my plate, I cursed myself for being so stupid.I had no clue what Dark Matter was, let alone how it interacted with hard liquor. Goddess, how had I let myself get this way? My wolf began to stir, almost like she wanted to remind me that it was her who had gotten us into this mess. The damage is already done, I thought as I took another sip of whiskey.Surprisingly, the urge to vomit hadn’t faded at all.Sterling met my stare as he skewered a piece of fish with his fork. He smirked as he chewed. Did he know something I didn’t?“In time we’ll discover Ophelia’s affinity—” Ryker began.Kimberly snickered and said quietly, “If she even has one.”Of course, he didn’t bother calling her out. I wasn’t sure why part of me expected him to. It must’ve been the stupid bond acting up again. Well, there was one bright side to things. The more alcohol I consumed, the less I cared.“I’m wi

OpheliaThe morning after the dinner from hell I showered, dressed, and ran from the villa to make it to the Moonlight Lounge on time.I’d wasted precious minutes puffing on the last shred of Dark Matter I had, hiding behind the detached garage in a corner where the cameras couldn’t reach. Now, with my head swimming blissfully, I waltzed down the sidewalk pointedly ignoring the baby pink Corvette that trailed after me, driving at a whopping three miles per hour.“You’re being ridiculous!” Nova shouted, her voice carrying through the passenger window.I lifted my chin even higher. Goddess, she was a stubborn one.She let out a loud, overly dramatic sigh. “Fine! I’ll just keep following you. Our overlord has commanded me to train you today, so I have nowhere else to be.”I rolled my eyes, which was a bad idea because the entire world shifted, nearly causing me to stumble.“Well, our overlord needs to remember that unlike his royal self, some people have to work. And by some people, I me

OpheliaWe drove in silence to Nova’s house, which turned out to be a cream-colored villa just a few neighborhoods over.A sand-stone driveway, lined with neatly trimmed shrubs, circled the place. Pillars that gleamed beneath the setting sun stood in clusters around the patio, and within the villa itself. Gaping windows trimmed with gold showed a perfect view inside.Where Lucille’s place was cold and sterile, this one was brimming with warmth.Nova led me into her bedroom, which was easily the size of a modest apartment, and to a closet large enough to fit a pack of wolves. From the canopied bed that sat against the far wall to the throw pillows on top, each one shaped like a little candy heart, everything in Nova’s room was pink.“I know my style isn’t for everyone.” She said, her voice muffled since she’d vanished into her closet.Slowly spinning in a circle to drink it all in, I shook my head.“No, it’s nice.”I’d never been one of those girls who hated all thinks pink or girly. Ophelia“Well, this party went from fun to lame. Who let you in?”“It’s a beach.” I said flatly. The bartender slid a drink Kimberly’s way. It was a bright shade of violet, shimmering with flecks of swirling silver. As I looked closer, I noticed streaks of lightning within the liquid. They crackled against the rim of the glass, lighting up her drink from within. She smiled coyly at the guy. The snake tattoo slithering up his cheek rippled as he smiled back.I was too busy glaring at Kimberly to pay attention to the bottle of water he slid my way. Sneering, Kimberly plucked it up and shoved it at me. She stepped close, her scent—which consisted of expensive perfume and sunblock—invading my nostrils.“Listen good and well you attention seeking bitch. There isn’t a single person on this island who wants you here. Yes, our darling little coven needs you, but that’s it.” She snarled, “That is the full extent of your usefulness.”Her words were shards of glass digging into my flesh, but I w

OpheliaI blinked the tears from my eyes to find Ryker standing a few feet away. His eyes were molten silver, latched on my heaving chest and the sweat that speckled my breasts. He stormed up to me, his hair blown back from the wind.We were concealed by the darkness, far enough away from the torches for this moment to feel private.“What do you think you’re doing?” Slowly, his eyes trailed down my body, sliding over my flesh like cold water. If his stare felt this good—this euphoric—I couldn’t imagine how his touch would feel.I hadn’t realized my hand had been slowly climbing up my dress, veering towards the source of that painful heat. I forced my lips to move, forced the words to tumble free regardless of how embarrassing they were because I needed—Oh Goddess, I needed it.“Please, Ryker—” I gasped as my fingers brushed against the hem of my underwear. “I’m burning up. I’m burning up! It’s—It’s too much.”I could think of nothing else. Nothing but his hands on my body and his fing

JudeI walked away from Ophelia and my brother without so much as a glance back. The urge to murder had crawled beneath my skin and was now worming it’s way through my veins like a hoard of maggots. I pulled out my hunter’s knife and ran my thumb along the blade until it drew blood. So, Ophelia had seen Ryker. What did that matter to me?It didn’t.What caused the sudden onslaught of murderous inclinations must’ve been her treatment of poor Jameson. Watching his bones snap and twist had been the best fucking foreplay I’d ever experienced.A thing like that would get any guy worked up.That still didn’t explain why I felt so—so—annoyed? Aggravated? Irritable? I wasn’t sure what this particular emotion was called, but I didn’t like it.Too bad I couldn’t go back and finish the job. Believe me, I was severely fucking tempted, but Ryker would never (and I mean never) let me hear the end of it. With Jameson a member of his own coven, doing such a thing would start an all-out war.The only

OpheliaI stared out the window of Nova’s car, firmly trapped within my own mind. She was talking to me. I could feel her words ripple across my sensitive skin, but they faded long before they could reach my ears. Was this shock?I could feel every inch of my body, and yet I was neither hot nor cold. My mind floated in and out of oblivion, forcing me to relive the conversation I’d had with Ryker back on the beach.Jameson’s other coven members, which included Diana, Gemma, and Chloe, came to drag his writhing body away. I was horrified at the disappointment that surged through me as Ryker told me he would live. One of the males in Jameson’s coven was the bartender that had given me the bottle of water. I noticed the snake tattoo crawling up his throat, it’s beady eyes focused on my face.“They’ll retaliate for what you’ve done.” Ryker had said, his expression grim. “Joining our coven is now the only protection you’ll have. They won’t be able to hurt you once you join us. Now tell me e

OpheliaWe left the manor exactly as it had been, shifting into our wolf forms to travel to the nearest town. The run helped dull the sharp edges of my thoughts, but the moment we arrived, reality came crashing back down. The town was small and worn. The kind of place where the streetlights flickered, and the air smelled of cheap gasoline. The motel wasn’t much better with its peeling paint, flickering sign, and lobby that reeked of mildew, but it had a bed and hot water. That was plenty enough for me.Inside the cramped room, I told the others, “When I was traveling with my father, I met a demon. One of Hell’s princes.” At this Nova paled. I knew she was thinking of the demon currently trapped in her bedroom—the incubus. “It showed me a vision where my mother was alive and well. She wasn’t twisted by dark magic, or corrupted, or anything like that. She was just herself.”I left out the other parts. The ones I couldn’t say without severing ties from my father entirely, and that would

OpheliaThe front porch creaked beneath our weight, the sound deafening in the silence. Every whisper felt like an accusation, every breeze a paranoid thought that chilled me to my core. I was sure my father would step out from behind a pillar, or a hedge.I inhaled deeply, reaching out with my magic. “There aren’t any wards on the house.”Nova made a face. “That’s surprising. We had a hell of a time making it through the forest, but this place has nothing?”“Morningstar likely assumed no one would get this far.” Sterling crossed his arms. “Or, depending on which point we entered, the wards we encountered could have varied entirely.”“It did feel like they intersected in some areas,” I pondered aloud.“That is elaborate. Like a moving puzzle.” Ryker huffed. “I’d expect nothing less.”I reached for the door handle, my fingers grazing the cold, swirling metal. A sharp sting shot through my finger, and I jerked back with a wince. A drop of blood welled on my fingertip.“Damn it,” I grunt

  • Lycans of Lunar Isle   Chapter 178

OpheliaHe balled his hand into a fist and the earth trembled before splitting open. Vines with wickedly sharp thorns, curved like the blade of a scythe, lunged from the ground like vicious snakes. There was a yelp, followed by a wail of pain as Jude’s vines struck the wolf closest to us.Nova fell to the ground, her mouth open in a soundless scream. Blood spilled from a deep gash across her chest, one right below her collarbones. Jude turned, his eyes wide with curiosity. “Well, fuck, that’s not good.” “Grab below her arms!” Ryker bellowed at Sterling, who jumped into action to haul Nova up. She let out a pained groan that twisted my stomach into knots. There was so much blood. So much crimson. “Focus, tesoro. We need you to keep up the protection shield as long as you can. Sterling has herbs on him that will heal her, but we need space to use them.”His voice snapped me out of my panic, and I nodded. Drawing magic from the earth was slower with all the wards in place. I was confide

  • Lycans of Lunar Isle   Chapter 177

OpheliaFor the next hour we trudged through the uneven terrain, navigating over thick roots and jagged rocks, the towering trees pressing in from all sides.I continued to rely on a mix of my magic and the blood racing through my veins to lead the way. My fathers house was still mine to some degree—still mine by blood. I was beginning to realize that in the magic world, blood held power. The further we delved, the harder it became to see ahead—especially with the fading light. Branches hung low like skeletal fingers, clawing at our clothes.Eventually the air thickened with humidity, and soon, fog curled along the ground, rising in creeping tendrils. It clung to our skin, damp and warm, carrying the scent of earth—rich, almost sweet.“Watch your step,” Ryker said a moment too late.Nova’s mouth flew open as her foot caught on something unseen, her balance pitching dangerously forward—straight toward a steep drop-off we hadn’t even noticed. Jude reacted first, clamping his hand over h

OpheliaRyker found me alone the following morning putting some final touches on a few potions. They were a bit hasty—especially the fire repellant potion—but they would do the job should my father’s protection methods turn … violent.I felt him approach as I always did, his soul brushing up against my own.“I shouldn’t have said it,” he admitted to my back, his voice quieter than usual. “Threatening to dark bond you wasn’t just wrong, it was abhorrent. Unforgiveable. I knew what it would do—”Exhaling sharply, I spun around, the bubbling cauldron now at my back. If this acid potion singed my hair off I’d be pissed.“It was smart. You were thinking like an Alpha.” He blinked at me, shock morphing the handsome contours of his face. “Seriously, it drove the nail home. It was my reaction that convinced him. I know that’s why you didn’t tell me beforehand. My father firmly believes we hate one another now. He’ll never suspect what we’re doing tonight. So, I don’t need an apology.”Whateve

  • Lycans of Lunar Isle   Chapter 175

OpheliaI used to be the kind of girl who wore every emotion for the world to see. Blame it on the choices I’ve made, or the things I’ve done, but I now had this box deep inside of myself where I stuffed the emotions deep. They bled out. They always did. It wasn’t an impenetrable box by any means, but the world no longer had to witness my emotions devouring me one bite at a time.It was in this box that I stuffed the pure terror of seeing my father standing in Edwards’ living room.My father stood beneath the light fixture; his hands clasped in front of him. His suit was the color of ash and neatly tailored to fit his body. I let my eyes linger on the harsh set of his jaw—on the sharp line his facial hair made as it carved its way up his cheek.Stuffing the last finger-trembling crumbs of fear into that box, I met his cold gaze.He was furious.I could feel his magic here even though he wasn’t casting. His shadow stretched along the back wall; this distorted thing. My stomach dropped

OpheliaThe scent of salt clung to the air in Shreveport, carried in by the crashing waves at our backs.Aisha stood at my side; her braid twisted into a tight knot at the back of her head. Her face was expressionless, eyes trained on the street ahead.Lamps on either side flickered in the humid light, casting golden pools onto the pavement. Music trickled from the open doors of nearby bars, blending with the chatter of people. Shops were still open this Friday evening, their signs buzzing softly, drawing in customers.Kids ran around with bags stuffed full of candy from the shop at the corner. Several times since moving here I had passed that very store, my mouth watering for something Lucille would’ve never let me have. Tourists snapped pictures beneath hanging lanterns, oblivious to the danger breathing down their very necks.I hid in the shadows between two shops, four warriors at my back flanking me on either side. They remained in their wolf forms, their heavy breathing a reassu

  • Lycans of Lunar Isle   Chapter 173

OpheliaThe night air drifted in through the open window, warm and slightly humid. Crickets chirped in the distance; their song broken by the occasional cry of some animal deep within the trees. The ocean was too far away for me to hear the waves, but I could still taste the sea on my tongue.Ryker sat across from me, his silver eyes unreadable. His fingers were threaded as he processed what I had just told them. The soft light from the chandelier, and the protection charm I cast over the room, caught the sharp angles of his face, casting shadows along his jawline where his black curls brushed against his skin.Jude, on the other hand, didn’t have the patience for silence. He kicked his combat boots onto the coffee table and flashed me that familiar, razor-sharp grin. “So let me get this straight. You want us to help you break into your father’s manor, which is most definitely crawling with enough magical wards to fry our brains, to search for proof that he stole your mother’s soul?”

NovaI slammed my binder shut, startling several people at nearby tables. Running my fingers through my hair, I felt the tension ease from my scalp as I pulled my ponytail free. The notes I had spent months taking were all blurring together, the dark ink forming thick lines—lines like the ones that ran across the demons body.Everything about him was so terrifying and peculiar. The stark black hair with the white stripe. The crimson eyes. The bands tattooed around his arms and throat. And don’t even get me started on his tongue.Shaken from my thoughts, I realized I’d been sitting there with my fingers pressed against my lips, my entire body trembling.“Sterling,” I called out over the mind-link, the one thing I had that the demon couldn’t track. “You available?”“What’s going on, beautiful?”“Need you to pick something up for me, but it might be hard to find.”“How long do I have?”“Um, a few hours.”“You are very lucky I love you.”My attention drifted back to my hair.
