Ophelia

My mate was getting married.

Even worse, he was getting married to my sister.

My wolf’s anger bled into my veins until I could feel it thickening my blood, pumping hatred into my heart until it’s acidic taste danced along the back of my tongue.

“Be calm,” I told her. “We need a level head if our plan is going to work.”

Discreetly and with great care I had the warriors from my pack slowly remove themselves from Lunar Isle. With news of Ryker’s wedding rippling across the island, it was all too easy for them to slip away unnoticed.

All except for Aisha, who stubbornly insisted she remain by my side.

“With all due respect, Luna, I am your Beta. It’s quite literally my job to stand by you.” The female said, her chin lifted with pride. “I ask for the sake of my honor that you allow me to remain here.”

Her long hair was slicked into a high pony, which was currently draped over her shoulder. She wore a black tank-top that showed off her chiseled arms, and a pair of leather pants fitte

Apologies for the long wait. I put more of my focus on Alpha Caius, but I'm jumping back into Lycans. I have more that I plan on posting tomorrow! Hope you all like weddings, because this one is going to be a doozy.

It was Jude that was using the vines. Morningstar had told Ophelia to cause a distraction so he could get the books on the island. What better distraction then to crash a wedding.

OpheliaPaling, Kimberly spun around and took off towards the back of the temple.A dark smile tugged at the corners of my lips. Kimberly had never been the smartest, but clearly she was intelligent enough to know that even with the spell she’d placed binding her to Jude, neither of my mates would dare protect her from me.She shoved her way through the crowd, which were stampeding for the doors in sheer panic. Swatches of bland colored fabric flitted before my eyes during the chaos.Smoke filled the air as the wooden benches ignited.I had no intention of killing these people. I merely needed them to act as a distraction so I could confront Kimberly. In a few minutes Aisha would open the doors and let them scurry out like a hoard of finely dressed cockroaches. My magic hadn’t just affected the temple itself, but the land around it. Vines began crawling in through the shattered windows, winding around pillars and those in the crowd. Several screams rang out as the vines snagged people

JudeSeveral days before the wedding…“The fuck do you mean it just closed up?”Ryker pinched the bridge of his nose. Exhaustion weighed heavy on him, but after three days of straight fighting it weighed heavily on all of us. Still, he was shorter tempered than usual. It was unlike him, but then again loss of Ophelia was still clawing its way through the tattered remains of our souls.“I mean what I said Jude,” he snapped, tugging on the sleeve of his dress shirt. The white material was stained with blood, but he made no move to change. “The tear or rift or whatever the fuck you want to call it closed up. Si è chiuso! It’s not there anymore. The rest of the demons that managed to slip through have been killed as well. We have a few fire elementals out there burning the remains.”Well, that explained the smell of charred ass lingering in the air.Nova walked in, freshly showered and stinking of lemon-scented soap. “Don’t either of you find it strange that Beta chick practically jumped

JudeThe entire thing, from the gaudy ass dressed to the faces packed full of make-up, turned my stomach inside out. I wanted to tear it all to fucking shreds. I wanted to carve every one of Kimberly’s twisted, fucked up dreams from her flesh and bathe in her blood.I held onto the daydream of doing just that as I climbed the steps in the temple of the Goddess, and joined Ryker at the podium where he and that bitch would be married.Fuck, I missed Ophelia. Missed her like nothing else. The day we found her in the bathroom, she carved my damn heart out and took it with her. It had been hers long before that though. It didn’t matter to me that she had gone over to the dark side. Hell, I fucking loved it there. All I cared about was whether or not she were snuffing out that light I’d fallen for within her. The light I craved like none other. When you’ve lived in the dark your entire life you have no clue how good that light feels. So imagine my surprise when the doors to the temple fly o

OpheliaI dragged Kimberly along with me as we exited the temple through the side door. The ebony snakes still writhed over her skin, their fangs sunken deep into her flesh. Little streams of dried blood were caked to her arms, throat, and shoulders. She tried to fight against them, but it was futile. They were feeding on my blood. Morningstar blood. It would take a long while for them to tire.Gazing down towards the front of the building, I spotted the guests fleeing from the chapel. They moved in droves, trampling the finely manicured grass in their attempt to make it to the parking lot.I veered left, towards the dense forest. No one would think to head that way. The guests would inevitably flock towards the fire trucks and ambulances packed with healers that were likely already on the way.“I’d say it’s a shame your pretty wedding dress is now stained with your blood, but I don’t particularly care. In fact, I don’t feel much of anything at all.”The closer we neared to the forest

OpheliaI nudged her along, waiting patiently as she stumbled down the two steps leading to the lowered platform where the couch sat. As she breached the spell circle, the one my father had meticulously placed around the perimeter of the platform, I released the dark spell I had crafted. The ebony snakes vanished into wisps of smoke, leaving behind little red pinpricks where their fangs had cut into her flesh.I nearly sighed with relief. Already I could feel my strength returning to me. Dark magic still drained me much too quickly.Kimberly wasted no time. Ignoring our father completely she lunged at me, magic crackling at her fingertips. As she hit the barrier of the spell circle she was thrown backwards onto her ass.“What—” Her eyes darted around, making note of the grey substance circling her and the platform itself. “You trapped me in a fucking spell circle?”It wasn’t just any spell circle, but she’d find out soon enough. The mixture of black salt, crushed egg shells, and grind

OpheliaKimberly continued to curse me to hell and back while the demon dragged itself from the portal. She was very creative with her threats, which ranged from drowning all the way down to beheading and flaying me alive. With that tenacity she should have no problem controlling the demon.I unfurled my fingers around the timer and pressed the button, starting the countdown.Rapping my knuckles on the door, I shouted. “Thirty minutes, Kimberly. Tick-tock.”I could tell the moment the demon fully emerged from the portal. Kimberly’s brazen threats were cut off by an ear-piercing scream, the kind you saw in horror movies. I listened with my ear against the door.“Ophelia!”“What is this—”“GET AWAY FROM ME!”I rolled my eyes and exhaled through my nostrils. Was that her plan of action? To yell at it to death? Unless the demon had unnaturally sensitive hearing I was almost positive that wouldn’t work.Quickly realizing there was a gap in between the doors, I peered through it and into th

OpheliaI was asleep.I knew I was not because of the weight dragging me under, pulling me beneath waves like an anchor I couldn’t shake. No, it was the nightmares that told me I was unconscious. They flashed behind my eyelids in short bursts partially blocked by the potion I’d taken that morning. Once it was out of my system they would come back full force, haunting my sleeping moments until I did everything in my power to avoid falling into their grasp. It had happened before, which was why my father had shown me the recipe in the first place.Red tainted my vision. The taste of blood lingered on my tongue, as pungent as Kimberly’s shrill screams.I couldn’t take back what I’d done. Did I really want to though? I wasn’t sure. The nightmares flickered, taking on this blurry quality. Some distant part of me felt arms wrapping around my body. Warmth brushed across my flesh along with something that almost tickled.Sparks maybe? No, that couldn’t be it. Not unless one of them were touch

OpheliaI spun around. “Wards. You think wards are going to keep me in here? I’ll drain them just like I drained the dark spell Kimberly placed on Jude.”“That’s if you can find them all, which you won’t.” Jude rolled his lower lip between his teeth. The bond unfurled in my chest. I barely bit back the pathetic whine that threatened to leave me. “I missed hearing you say my name.”Ryker cleared his throat. His hands were clasped behind his back, making him even more imposing than he already was. It didn’t help that his dress shirt and slacks did nothing to conceal the muscled body that hid beneath.“I didn’t take a stand before, but I should have. We should have claimed you the second the bond snapped into place, because you’re all that matters, Ophelia. Not Kimberly. Not the idiotic deal I’d made with her. I fucked up by letting you think otherwise. You might end up hating me more, but this is me taking a stand.” He clenched his jaw, the muscles within twitching. “You aren’t leaving

OpheliaI waited until I heard his bedroom door close before letting out a slow breath. Turning back to the scrying bowl, I placed a quick silencing charm over the room to ensure the conversation would be private. I wouldn’t put it past Edward to eavesdrop.Magic spilled out of me in a steady stream. I let it seep into the herbs as I hastily poured them into the water. It was my sloppiest work, but I couldn’t focus more than a few seconds at a time. My mind would drift to those birds, and to the feelings stirring in my chest, and my hands would begin to shake.Scrying was an imperfect art. Much like a vast city with a network of alleyways, there were many ways to get to one place. I merely chose the straightest, fastest one.“Dad!” I shouted and my own voice echoed back at me. The water rippled, like rain disturbing the surface of a puddle, when my father’s face appeared. He stood over me as if I were lying on the ground. It made the angle of the image seem off. As the water was distu

OpheliaMy eyes fluttered open as a set of harsh whispers pierced through my consciousness. It was impossible to keep still when my soul recognized the voices.“We know exactly how they got on the island. What I want to know is why that pezzo di merda sent a flock of demons …” His words were laced with venom, ending on a growl that left the rest unintelligible.Jude’s reply was softer, but no less intense. “And we will find out.”My heart began to race. They had to be talking about my father. Again. I took a steadying breath and pushed myself up. There was a dull throb in the places where I’d been wounded by the demon birds. I glanced down and saw white bandages covering parts of my body.“Bird wounds weren’t healing right.” At the sound of Jude’s voice I looked up. My mouth went dry. He was leaning against the wall of my bedroom, his fists jammed in his pockets. An indolent smile unfurled across his face as he caught me staring. Thankfully, he didn’t comment. “There was some kind of

OpheliaAnother one of their strange cries split the air, followed by another, and another, until they melded into a chorus of screams. I closed my eyes, but it only made it worse. They sounded just like wailing infants, their voices far higher and shriller than they had any right to be. The hairs on the back of my neck lifted.“Ryker,” I breathed, my voice trembling. “What the hell are those things?”There was a strange rumble as the red eyes began to rise in height and grow brighter, burning like hot coals. Their cries continued to build, grinding against my skull like a hacksaw. I fought the urge to clamp my hands over my ears.“No clue, but I don’t think we should stick around to find out.”“Well, we can’t just move. They’re clearly watching us.” I hissed back.Flicking my eyes upwards, an idea popped into my head as I looked at the streetlamp. It was one of those that hung from an arch, making it possible to bend. Ryker followed my line of sight and made a small sound under his b

OpheliaRyker blinked once, then threw his head back and roared with such veracious laughter that the entire pizza shop went silent. He cleared his throat, his eyes darting around. I watched in awe as the Alpha of the island blushed.I pointed at him, the smile on my face for once genuine. “That’s exactly what you get for laughing at me.”“Tell me what happened next,” He said, his eyes sparkling. “What did your teachers do? What about the other students?”“They were all horrified, obviously! It was dead silent too, and when I made it to the door I tried to pull myself up, but my damn foot was still asleep.” Laughter was bubbling out of me now too, trickling like a leaky faucet. “I had to nudge the door open and crawl out into the hallway. Goddess, it was mortifying.”“That is pretty bad, but it’s got nothing on my story.” Ryker said with such assurance that my laughter faded, and I instead raised my brows at him.“Really? Pray tell, Alpha. You don’t seem like the type to embarrass.”H

Ophelia“You’ve been suspiciously absent from our family dinners,” I pointed out, chomping into a bite of pizza for emphasis. My eyes rolled back, and I practically moaned. Pizza should not be that good.A smug smile flashed across his face, and I decided it looked absurdly good on him.“I’ve been busy.”Busy was an understatement. He missed the last four, which was unusual. I had only started attending them to keep Jude from playing his twisted pranks. He thought it was hilarious when he moved every single piece of furniture from the dining room to my bedroom.Truthfully, I wasn’t all that angry about it anymore.Eating dinner with Jude wasn’t the worst thing in the world. We talked about everything but the glaring issues between us, which is exactly how I wanted it. I never would have thought, but Jude enjoyed all things art. We spent one evening going over every book we’d ever read. My list was limited since I hadn’t read for enjoyment since we moved from Alpha Hunter’s pack, but J

OpheliaMy head throbbed and my mouth tasted faintly of alcohol as I stumbled out of bed that morning. The room spun slightly as I made my way to the bathroom, my bladder screaming with each wobbly step. I gripped the doorframe for support and physically recoiled when I flicked on the lights.Magic surged out of me like a whip and the bulbs lining the mirror exploded, sending sparks raining down. I let out an inhuman groan and flicked my hand at the mess, sending the glass skittering into a neat pile. My head throbbed again.Cold water trickled down my face as I hunched over the sink. Little pinpricks of cold radiated across the apples of my cheeks. They were almost as red as my blood-shot eyes. Staring at my reflection, a sudden clarity pierced through the fog of my killer hangover.I couldn’t keep going on like this, relying on alcohol to chase the nightmares away. Quite frankly, I hated the stuff. Why did it have to taste so awful? No, I couldn’t do this anymore. I needed that poti

NovaAfter using the bathroom, I made my way to the kitchen, catching myself on the walls as the house tilted left and right. Smacking my dry lips, I winced. I needed something to drink that wasn’t straight liquor. So, I made myself a martini, extra dirty.I was putting the vodka and vermouth back when the temperature in the room began to rise. Warmth like molten honey began to drip down my spine in a rhythm my body had memorized. Panic seized me and my throat closed, causing me to choke. As I coughed into my fist, my eyes watering, I could feel that warmth grow and spread. That was how the ghost—or whatever the fuck it was—made itself known. I didn’t know how long it had been here. It only started acting up recently. I immediately went to Sterling since he was practically an expert on the dead, but even he couldn’t help.“I can’t get a read on it. Whatever kind of spirit it is, it’s hiding from me. Are you sure you tried all of the banishments in the spellbook? And none of them worke

NovaI was no stranger to guilt.I had seen it appear like a shadow on the wall the day we found out our mother died. Since then I could feel it looming over my shoulder those moments where I failed to protect Coop—failed to help guide and raise him the way I promised her. There were bad moments, like seeing my brother strapped to a bed at the same asylum Alpha Ryker’s father stayed at, where it felt like the shadow wasn’t just leaning over my shoulder, but whispering in my ear.Five more hairs, only five. I reached up and tugged them at the root, chewing on my lower lip as I felt each one pop free. They lay in my hand like strands of pale ribbon.Mom always loved my hair.Things hadn’t always been this way, but I no longer could remember a time where the guilt didn’t gnaw at me. Over the years it had grown into a bigger beast than even my wolf could tame.“You do know that we’ll have to find some way to disguise me, right?” Ophelia said as I walked back into the room. OpheliaAfter that night at Edwards I realized that alcohol helped chase the nightmares away. It wasn’t sustainable, and I knew that, but it at least bought me a few nights’ sleep while I tried to figure something else out.Sneaking out to the library again was becoming an impossibility, so I had no way to look for my own alternative. I had no clue how Ryker managed to run an entire island, when I could barely manage a hundred. There was always someone who needed something from me, and even with Aisha’s help I felt like a child playing at being an adult.I quickly became tempted to accept the potion Jude offered instead, which he left outside of my door every single night, but why should I?He agreed to give me that potion, not some replacement. He could deny it and twist my words however he wanted, but I wasn’t going to give in. He couldn’t walk all over me just because we shared some bond. When Nova’s ‘friend date’ rolled around later that week I was almost relieved. That was until
