Flexing my fingers, I let the ropes tighten until the tendons in his throat appeared.

“Sit. Stay.” He stopped thrashing. “Good boy.”

I watched him struggle, feeling out his own clumsy attempts at using his magic. It reminded me of a toddler in the middle of a tantrum. Punches and kicks were thrown but they were uncoordinated blows, too weak to do anything substantial.

“You have magic, but you’re not very good at using it.”

My father swept into the room. His presence silenced the retort Ren had been about to unleash.

“That’s his father’s doing, I’m afraid. He taught Ren what he knew, of course, but learning how to master your magic without ever tapping into it is a hard feat.”

He circled around the back of the chair, causing Ren to stiffen. I rested my chin in the palm of my hand, watching him squirm. My father stopped directly behind him. A strangled sort of sound left Ren’s lips as my father’s hands fell on his shoulders.

“If it’s money you want—”

“Ren’s lack of magic hasn’t s

I apologize for the delay in updates. I've been in the middle of a move, and was dealing with some food poisoning, so needless to say I'm falling apart, haha. I have been feeling better, but still have a week of packing left to do. I'll be setting aside time daily to work on Lycan's and Alpha Caius and the Runaway Luna! <3

  • Lycans of Lunar Isle   Chapter 109

Ophelia Two Weeks Later… I looked into the gilded mirror that adorned the faded, peeling wall of our latest hide out and realized I hardly recognized myself. The green of my eyes was bright just like my fathers, while my strawberry-blonde hair, the same as my mothers, hung down my back in loose waves. I was bits and pieces of their hopes, dreams, and regrets meshed into a single form. The clothes I wore, the way that I spoke, the emptiness I now clutched against my heart like a shield, it was all necessary. I knew that doing this would change me, I just had no idea how much. Rubbing my sternum, I closed my eyes and felt around the frayed edges of the bond. It missed Jude and Ryker. It missed the other pieces of my soul unlike anything else. It yearned for them despite the hurt and the pain and the betrayal. It raged at me for the way I had treated them in return. But I couldn’t give in. They were my mates. They were supposed to notice. They were supposed to save me from Alp

OpheliaWe emerged from the forest, then crossed a large dirt parking lot littered with people. Mothers and fathers hauled their young children out of their minivans, urging them forward with the prospect of funnel cake, rides, and arcade games. The sweetness of powdered sugar tinged the air as we approached the carnival's gates. The lights on the sign flashed in bursts of red and white, illuminating the sea of people passing through below. Further up ahead parents nudged their children forward with tickets clutched in hand. “Some illusion magic should do the trick, don’t you think?” My father murmured, looking my way. I lifted a hand and wriggled my fingers. Holding my intention in my mind I let my magic fill the air. Like thin swatches of silk it wrapped around us, shielding us from view. I could have easily made us a few fake tickets, but where was the fun in that?We slipped past the line of families waiting to purchase their way in, and waltzed right inside.“Show off,” he win

Ophelia The male’s smile was sharp. As sharp as the cunning in his milky eyes. “And we have a winner. I’d offer you one of those stuffed animals as a prize, but you don’t seem the type. Maybe once,” he mused. “But not anymore. Funny how quickly a person can change. Though I wouldn’t use a word as mundane as ‘person’ to describe you, Atticus Morningstar’s pride and joy.” It didn’t matter that my father claimed our family line could control demons. The fear had been so ingrained into my being that I could taste it burning on my lips. One blink and I was back in that house, watching as my friends were slaughtered. Watching as a demon tore it’s way into Coop’s body. No, absolutely not. I refused to sit here and cower. The Ophelia that participated in that ritual was a foolish little girl. She and I were not the same person, nor would we ever be again. The male—demon—cocked it’s head. “You’ve met Abaddon.” Abaddon, the demon that possessed Coop. Even now I could hear it’s voice sl

OpheliaDon’t run, he said. We’ll catch you, he also said.My chest heaved as I ran for the House of Mirrors. The last I’d seen of Jude and Ryker they were being pelted in the face by a slew of stuffed animals. I would’ve laughed had the potion not been suppressing my emotions. It was a worthwhile trade. Better to sleep soundly without horrific night terrors. Giving up the ability to feel was nothing in comparison.I looked up at the night sky as I ran.I’d have to take another dosage soon before this one wore off. The bond was silent in my chest, but it wouldn’t be forever. A sign flapped on the curtains blocking off the entrance to the House of Mirrors. I released a sigh as I read the word closed in jagged hand writing. At least I could use my magic freely. I was getting tired of wiping human’s memories when they saw or heard too much. Despite how often I trained with my father, I didn’t enjoy entering people’s minds. That was his thing. Skidding to a stop, the curtains of the Ho

OpheliaThat one word, it was a warning. A warning wrapped in a neat, pretty bow. One meant to keep me safe. One meant to wrap me in wool because I was their precious mate. It was in Jude’s nature to harm, just as it was in Ryker’s to protect.Fuck his protection. The girl I was now…she no longer needed it.“That’s it, Jude,” I laughed. “Heel, Jude. Down, Jude. Obey, Jude.”Ryker’s eyes flashed with murder. I couldn’t see the expression on Jude’s face, but from the way his chest heaved against my back, I knew my words hit home. Jude’s teeth scraped along my ear, nipping so hard I yelped. A surge of—of emotion swelled in my chest, causing the bond to hum softly. I began to panic. “I’m going to enjoy tearing you apart, little dove. My perfect mate,” he whispered, “So pretty. So breakable.”As he lapped up my blood, his fingers flexing on my bare stomach, that panic began to grow.“Goddess,” my laughter was breathless. “You say you’re not his enforcer anymore, but you’re still his trai

Ophelia“You’re crazy.” I shook my head back and forth until the world blurred. There was no way, no way, he’d go through with this. This little game we played was one thing, but fucking me with the hilt of a knife? No, it was pure insanity.Jude’s smile was sardonic, “I prefer the term mentally unhinged.”The hilt of the blade grazed my inner thigh, causing me to tense. There was no barrier keeping it from entering me. Even trying to close my legs was futile as Jude’s large frame blocked me from doing so.His eyes never left my face.“Hold her hands behind her back,” he barked at Ryker, lips curling even higher. “You know what you have to do to stop this, little dove. Words won’t work,” A knuckle skated down my cheek. “You’ll have to fight, but we both know you won’t.”The hell I wouldn’t. I lunged forward and snapped my teeth, nearly catching Jude’s lip in the process. He leaned back, only marginally, to avoid getting bit. Ryker’s magic danced through the air, snaring my wrists an

Ophelia “Shit.” I cursed and spun on my heel, eying the walls of the tent we stood within. Ryker and Jude mirrored my movements, both more on edge than ever. I’d have to find some way to slip past them. Fighting them would be hard, both magically and emotionally, but I couldn’t let them steal me away. This was for Coop, I reminded myself. To find a way to get the demon out of him. It was also about learning my father’s plans. As much as I wished I could say that were it, that wasn’t the truth anymore. Asmodeus’s vision changed everything. I could bring my mother back. I could have her and my father by my side. I could have a family. A family that loved me. A family that wanted me. I’d do anything to make that vision come true. “What is it?” Ryker pinned me with a single dissecting look. “Something’s happened. Is it Morningstar? Has he done something to you?” “What? No!” I scoffed, “We came here for a reason. I have a job to do, and standing here with you two is wasting precio

OpheliaJude’s smile was dark, cloaked in shadows. The light of the flames reflected off his straight white teeth. He reminded me of Asmodeus. Beautiful and haunting in a carnal sort of way.“Anything for you.”My wolf liked that. She liked it a lot.He and Ryker exchanged a look. The two brothers were opposites in many ways. Ryker had a kindness within him. A kindness I once had too before it was snuffed out. He wanted to be different from the man his father was. He wanted to be a just Alpha. One worthy of following. For a moment, I wasn’t sure he’d agree to help.“No one gets hurt,” he said firmly.I lifted my shoulder in a half-shrug, swallowing the truth. “If they move fast enough they won’t.”His gaze was all consuming. “I know you, Ophelia. No matter how much you’ve changed you wouldn’t hurt innocent people.”The bond throbbed in my chest, causing a red-hot pain to streak through me. It stoked my temper, causing me to grit my teeth.“I can’t wait to prove you wrong.”It wasn’t a

NovaI slammed my binder shut, startling several people at nearby tables. Running my fingers through my hair, I felt the tension ease from my scalp as I pulled my ponytail free. The notes I had spent months taking were all blurring together, the dark ink forming thick lines—lines like the ones that ran across the demons body.Everything about him was so terrifying and peculiar. The stark black hair with the white stripe. The crimson eyes. The bands tattooed around his arms and throat. And don’t even get me started on his tongue.Shaken from my thoughts, I realized I’d been sitting there with my fingers pressed against my lips, my entire body trembling.“Sterling,” I called out over the mind-link, the one thing I had that the demon couldn’t track. “You available?”“What’s going on, beautiful?”“Need you to pick something up for me, but it might be hard to find.”“How long do I have?”“Um, a few hours.”“You are very lucky I love you.”My attention drifted back to my hair. Just a few st

NovaAfter coffee with Ophelia, I finished up some late assignments in the library. Sitting in the dimly lit room, surrounded by stacks of books tucked away in shadowy alcoves, made my mind play tricks on me.The light would spill through one of the windows, hitting a vase of flowers or someone’s cup and I’d see a glimmer of red. My heart would clench thinking it was the demon spying on me.Four days ago…The container cracked against his head, but didn’t shatter as I’d hoped it would. He brought his hands up and the container flipped, covering us in sticky frosting. I darted out of the kitchen, sprinting through the dining room and knocking over chairs as I went. The demon followed me with a tauntingly beautiful grin on its face. Those two sets of canines glittered, ready to tear into skin. “You do not always freeze. Interesting. How pleasingly unpredictable.”A whimper crawled up the back of my throat. The fear thrumming through my veins was shifting, morphing into something—No. N

NovaWhatever I thought I’d been prepared for—it wasn’t this.He wasn’t some decrepit, mangled creature dredged up from the darkest pits of Hell. There were no pus-filled boils or swathes of infected, blistered skin peeling from his face and torso. No forked tongue or souls of the damned clawing to free themselves from his rotting body.He was tall and lean, with lightly tanned skin. His body was sculpted in a way that made every line of him feel intentional. Dangerous. His inky hair was unruly, curling around his forehead and ears. There was a thick white streak sliced through it, striking and unmistakable. Two crimson eyes, like polished rubies stared out at me.Tattoos inked his skin in bold, strange patterns. They coiled around his upper arms, around his throat, and around the contours of his chest. In his hand—of all things—was a rubber spatula. He was eating the vanilla buttercream I had made straight from its container. My breath caught again. I had planned to use that frostin

NovaThe sun was a burning halo above me as I made my way back to my towel on the beach. I relished the subtle sting along my shoulders and neck—one that told me I’d have a slight sunburn tomorrow.Waves crashed at my back, spilling from an entire ocean that shimmered like diamonds, whispering sweet secrets of freedom. My muscles still ached from the two hours I had spent surfing.Hoisting my board above my head, I jabbed it down into the moist sand. A cold chill passed over me just as I flopped down onto my towel. Grabbing a cold water from my pouch, I emptied half of it over my head and chugged the rest.A quick glance to my left revealed my phone, the screen flashing with a call from Ophelia. Suddenly, the brief glimmer of freedom I’d been savoring turned to salt and betrayal.Digging my fingers into the warm sand, I breathed in deeply and let the sounds of crashing waves and squealing children blot out my own internal screaming. I could feel the grains of my own lies grinding agai

OpheliaMy head snapped up. The rich scent of whiskey hung in the air, sharp and unmistakable. Edward had been drinking, but not enough to lose himself. His posture was too controlled, his gaze too sharp as it slid over me.“What?”“You were smiling to yourself, and your face is flushed.” He said, his voice smooth, but the tension coiled beneath was impossible to miss. “So, I asked, fun date?”I met his gaze, my pulse quickening for a reason that had nothing to do with attraction and everything to do with unease. Edward wasn’t stupid. He knew what my smile had been about. He knew where I had been—who I had been with.He wasn’t pleased.Internally, I tried not to panic. There was a reason why Ryker and Jude had dropped me back off at Edwards house, despite our agreement stating I had to sleep under their roof.My father was coming today. At two a.m. exactly he’d be stepping through a portal with another batch of those mate-bond suppressing potions. I still hadn’t fessed up to the lie t

OpheliaThe party transformed the moment those below the age of eighteen were corralled and sent to bed.A silencing spell was placed over the house, and the music was cranked up. Its melody spilled through the night like liquid gold. It pulsed in the air, a living thing, twining around the palm trees until even they swayed to the enchanting tune.Everything became louder. The music. The laughter. The conversation. Everything was rich and unrestrained, mingling with the scent of wine and sea salt.Jude stuck to my side like my own personal wraith. There were some tense moments where I thought he’d snap and swing at someone—or worse, stab them—but all It took was a single glance, a brush of my fingers against his bare arm, and he’d turn away from w hat was pissing him off to follow me wherever I went.It was strange, and even worse, I liked it.After being plied with just enough wine to give me a light buzz, I pulled both Jude and Ryker back into the throng of people dancing. OpheliaI returned to find Ryker in a heated discussion with who I assumed was another family member. The two were speaking rapidly, their expressions darkening like rolling storm clouds.“Te l'ho detto, Jude si è scusato. Ha sostituito la macchina, vero?” [I told you, Jude apologized. He replaced the car, right?]The man pointed at Ryker and growled, “Sappiamo entrambi che sei stato tu a sostituire la mia macchina. Tieni quel punk psicopatico lontano dalle mie cose! [We both know you're the one who replaced my car. Keep that psycho punk away from my stuff!]” Snatching a beer from a nearby ice bucket, he staggered off muttering to himself in Italian.Ryker was smirking to himself when I approached. “Did he say Jude’s name? What did he do this time?”“Nothing as of recent. He may have set Luca’s car on fire in the past though.”“Guy holds a grudge.”“Wouldn’t you, tesoro?”I shrugged. “I don’t know. Jude can be charming when he wants to be.”Folding his arms over his chest, Ryker crane

OpheliaThe fear that had been churning in my stomach, souring the fruit I’d been insane enough to eat from Ryker’s hand, simmered the entire drive—only to fizzle into bewilderment as we pulled into the driveway of a massive house. I could make out its red-tiled roof beyond a courtyard shaded by swaying palms. The sound of music, bold and joyous, trickled to us past rows of fountains and hedges of exotic flowers. There were so many of them that I was momentarily lost in all the color.Ryker held out his arm and my treacherous heart skipped a beat. “Do you really think I’m going to take that after you forced me here?”He could tell I wasn’t angry, and I hated him for it.Taking his arm, I followed him through the courtyard, our feet falling quietly on the stone pathway. A breeze whispered by, but instead of smelling the sea, I was met with the rich scent of herbs and roasted tomatoes, and— Was that bacon?Laughter sounded from somewhere inside the house, past the windows and wrought-ir

RykerThe purr of the Impala’s engine dampened to a quiet rumble as I pulled up to Edward’s place. His scent was everywhere. Salty like the ocean, but with a bitterness that made me feel like I needed to drink a gallon of water to wash it all down. Ophelia’s scent added a touch of sweetness, a burst of ripe cherries that settled across my tongue like a layer of sugar.Scanning the house, I immediately noticed Edward watching from the front window. His eyes held a claim in them that made me long to tear out his throat.Only a fool couldn’t see what the boy was planning. He wanted our mate, and not for the things he’d claim to want her for. Everything out of his mouth was sure to be a lie.Disposing of him would be smartest. Kill him before he kills us. Kills her. He’ll finish the job, and then who will you have? Jude won’t say in this world long—not without her. Edward needs to die. Tonight. Right now. A snarl ripped out of me. “Stai zitto, cazzo! Voci di merda!” [Shut the fuck up! Fu
