“Rosie!” Alexei is calling her. “Where are you?”
He is looking for her in the vast garden behind the palace. It is a bright summer afternoon. The sun is shining in the sky, showering the lands with its golden glory. Colorful flowers are blooming in the Emperor’s garden, beautiful and picturesque. The pond is sparkling like tiny diamonds and the warm water is soothing to touch.
The neatly trimmed garden is glowing under the summer sun, amplifying the beauty of the gigantic castle which surrounds it. Long stone towers reach high as if touching the sky. Set across acres of land, the palace stretched throughout the highest mountain. It looks down on the towns below like a godly creature, its towers twinkling. The lively castle is the pride of Ezealyra, an astounding architecture which houses the Royal Family of Visserion.
Alexei is now impatient. He taps his foot on the ground, groaning out loud. The eleven year old boy possesses a natural charisma which can attract and intimidate the people around him. His silky dark hair is hidden underneath a crown and his scarlet eyes are scanning the area for a tiny figure which is hiding somewhere.
Even without his wolf, Alexei’s senses are sharper than other werewolves. After all, he is a Lycan. Most werewolves shift when they are 18 but Lycans shift at 15. They are on the top of the werewolf hierarchy. Even Alphas cannot beat them in a fight and their blood is extremely valuable. They are born different and hence, rule over the other werewolf species.
“Hee hee!”
His sharp senses pick up someone’s snicker and he follows the laughter. It is coming from the small patio which belongs to his sisters, Anna and Maria. But he knows that they are at their daily training lessons. So this must be…
“Gotcha!” he exclaims at a small figure who was hiding behind a bush.
“Aaaa!”
A blonde girl falls out of the bush and lands on her bum. She is startled that he caught her so easily! The girl is around six years old with shiny golden hair which is almost as bright as the sun. Her doe-like amber eyes are full of shock and she pouts at her friend.
“This is not fair!” she protests. “I was supposed to scare you!”
“You cannot beat a Lycan Prince!” Alexei boasts. The girl only glares at him, feeling irritated. She tries to scare him everyday but he always catches her.
“I want to play again!” she insists.
“No. It is time for our lessons.”
Even though she is a human, the Empress of Ezealyra was kind enough to let the girl study alongside the Prince and the Princesses. Humans are treated with disdain and hatred because they hunted down supernatural creatures during the Great War. Most werewolves loathe them and after the humans were defeated, they were put at the bottom of the society.
But the Emperor and Empress were kind to Roseanne and her father Mikhael. In fact, Mikhael is a gifted healer and witch who has been summoned to the court under the Emperor’s request. As a witch, Mikhael’s identity is kept a secret because witches are extremely powerful humans who possess knowledge on a variety of powers. During the Great War, they were at the front, killing many werewolves and vampires in the process.
However, the witches were wiped out and the remaining ones were forced into hiding. The Vadimovna family are one of the oldest clans who are skilled in witchcraft but after the war, they went into hiding. The family tree began to shrink until only Roseanne and her dear papa remained. Her mother died in childbirth and Mikhael raised his daughter on his own. They were in hiding until the Emperor tracked them down to request Mikhael to treat Alexei.
Roseanne asked her father many times about what was wrong with Alexei but her father never told her. In her eyes, Alexei was happy and healthy.
Why do people claim that he is ill?
“I do not want to study!” She whines. “The teacher does not like me!”
Their teacher was Mr. Eskander and he hates humans. The only reason he is teaching Roseanne is due to the orders of Empress Alexa. Otherwise he would never let someone like her enter his class.
“He cannot do anything to you!” Alexei claims. “He is paid by us! If he tries to bully you, I will remove him from his service.”
“No!” Roseanne insists. “I want to play!”
Before Alexei can stop her, she runs off. He sighs. Why does this girl forget that he can run faster than her?
Roseanne giggles and runs but he warily watches her. She sticks out her tongue to taunt him. Suddenly, he vanishes.
“Huh?” she blinks. In an instant, he appears in front of her and tackles her to the ground.
“I told you, you cannot run from a Lycan!” he laughs.
“No fair!”
She playfully hits him. No one in the world can hit him like that. If they do, they will be killed.
But Roseanne was different. She is his friend and companion. Only she can hit him and get away with it.
Before she could run away again, he easily picked her up on his shoulder and began to walk towards the castle.
“Alexei, I want to play!” she moans.
“After we are finished with our studies!”
Roseanne begs and pleads but the Crown Prince ignores her. She pouts all the way to the class, annoyed at Alexei. He sighs and puts her down but she looks away from him.
“If you attend class today, I will let you see the ball tonight,” he promised. That put a smile on her face.
“Really? You will take me to the ball?”
“Yes.”
“Can we dance there as well?”
“Yes but no one can see us! My father will kill me if he finds out.”
“Okay!” Roseanne chirps. “I will go to the ball with you! You have to promise that you will dance only with me!”
“I will dance only with you.”
“Forever? Will you dance with me forever?”
He smiles at her and nods. “Forever.”
She is stirring in her sleep. Her eyes are stained with tears and her heart in an inexplicable pain but she cannot fathom why she is feeling so sad. The uneasy sleep is uncomfortable and she vaguely realizes that she is moving in her slumber.Roseanne slowly wakes up. A bright light blinds her and for a moment she panics. The memories of the auction return to her and she backs away in fear, feeling as if she is back at that accursed place.“Ah!” she yells and scrambles to a corner. To her surprise, she is inside a carriage which is unlike anything she has ever seen before. As a servant at the Royal Palace, she has seen many carriages but never rode in one. Now that she is riding in one, her eyes marvel at the beautiful golden calligraphy which adorns the interior. The artwork is abstract but precise and the carriage is qu
As the carriage keeps on venturing deeper into the Frosty Forest, a chilly mist settles around it. Everywhere Roseanne looks, she only sees white fog which is gradually shrouding them in its arms as if like a possessive lover. She can make out the dark silhouettes of the tall trees in the forest but that is all. There are no animals, no sounds and no life in this strange forest. She never visited the forest before but she has heard many stories about it. Humans do not dare to step into it after dark because all the supernatural creatures roam around this place at night, free to do whatever they want. If an unfortunate human strays into the path of a rogue wolf, they may be assaulted or worse, killed. There are stories of women being forcibly taken away by the rogues or even vampires.Vampires have been hiding in the shadows ever since the Great War ended.
Roseanne’s heart is thumping loudly against her chest. Everywhere she looks, it is only pitch black darkness surrounding her. The starless sky above her is shrouding the earth like a dark blanket, inviting them into its midst. Long shadows loom over her as they walk deeper into the forest. She shivers with cold. The Duke has put his coat around her but it is not enough to fight the coldness of the night. The Lycans around her are not affected by the mist but she is shivering. They have a natural affinity to the weather because their bodies keep them warm. For humans like her, the extreme cold is a curse.A hand wrapped around her shoulders. Startled, she looks around to find herself being cocooned by the Duke.“This will put you at ease,” he said to her but Roseanne is defensive. Even if the
Her eyes widened in awe. The first rays of the sun are falling on the land, slowly illuminating the dark sky. As they float along the river, several balls of tiny blue lights emerge from the grounds. The little balls mode in random motion, colluding against each other but floating merrily in the air.Everywhere Roseanne looks, the balls follow her gaze. They are playful and with minds of their own. One of them comes close to her as if to study the blonde haired maiden out of curiosity. Roseanne gasps.“Fairies,” she realizes in wonder. The fairy near her is a tiny little doll-like creature with delicate features of a small girl. It watches her with curiosity and then smiles widely.Beside her, Dmitri is lazily watching his mate. She might be reserved but her eyes lit up with glee when she saw the b
The heavy footsteps are echoing the long corridors of the palace. The lights from the grand chandelier above are shining on a group which is heading deeper into the castle. At the head of the party is a woman in her late fifties. She is of tall stature with high cheekbones and sleek ginger hair with grey streaks in it. Her long purple gown is stitched with thousands of diamonds while her neck and hands are adorned with the finest jewelry in the land. She is elegant and dignified but there is a cold glare in her eyes. A ruby crown is fitted on her head and everyone else is walking three steps behind her, not daring to cross that limit. Behind her, Stefan is trying to reason with her. He is the only one who can walk alongside her. “Your majesty, you m
The boat is anchored at the foot of Mount Evastus. Roseanne cannot help but look up at the mountain in front of her and she gulps.Evastus is the tallest mountain in the land. Situated in the no man’s land, Evastus separates Sloria from Ezealyra and is known to be a highly dangerous place. There are not many creatures lurking there but the mountain has a tumultuous weather and avalanches are common. The snow capped mountain reaches till the sky, disappearing into the clouds. A frosty chill lingers in the air, making Roseanne feel very cold. The Duke’s soldiers are waiting for them at the foot of the mountain and some of them are carrying spare clothes. Dmitri had sent a message to them earlier via mind link to prepare clothes for Roseanne. The soldiers are standing there obediently, waiting for their leader to arrive.
The guards are surrounding them as they walk towards the mountain. Roseanne expects that they will be climbing the mountain to get to the other side because there is only one route to Sloria. She is dreading the thought of having to climb that large mountain. What if they freeze to death? Or worse? “Please step back,” Timur says. They are at a small gap in the mountain. To her astonishment, there is a small cabin at the bottom of the mountain which is attached to a series of thick wires which Roseanne has only seen at the palace. The wires at the palace connect the Emperor to several phone lines so that he can talk to diplomats from other nations. But unlike those wires, these are thick and heavy. She has never seen such wires in her life. The wires are attached diagonally to the mountain top. Roseanne is a
The little girl was watching the old woman in awe. Draped in a red shawl, the woman had snowy white hair and a wrinkled face which was barely recognizable. Her dark eyes peered under the soggy eyelids, studying the child. Next to the child sat a man in his early thirties. He had the same blonde hair as the girl, but his eyes were jet black and he had a crooked nose. They were at a strange cave which was adorned with colorful beads. Candles lit all around them, giving off fragrances of rose and lilies while an altar lay in front of them on which the old woman was sitting upon. The child was hardly four years old, but very inquisitive. Her amber eyes were on the old woman, as if trying to recognize who she was. The old woman was also studying the child with interest.“Thank you for allowing us to receive your blessing, Maman!” the man said in a grateful tone. His name was Mikhael Vadimovna, a simple witch who worked in the village down the valley. No one knew he was a witch. In fact, he
