The conversation had taken a turn that I was not comfortable with. Given Lady Chihiro's judgy looks, I contemplated telling her that I had received that letter fairly recently. My mother probably hadn't expected my Dad to hide the whole box away while I grew up motherless and wolfless.

And that was the reason why I hadn't had much time to prepare myself to read what were possibly my Mom's last words to me.

To turn the conversation in the direction that I was interested in, I asked, "What's with all the Lycan decor? I'm guessing it is more than just interior designing."

"Of course, not." Lady Chihiro spoke as if my words had offended her and answered proudly, "All of us at Base Dark Moon take our Lycan lineage very seriously. In a world crawling with vicious Werewolves, cunning witches, and deceptive humans, one only has our kin to lean on. Lycans have always been closely knit packs. Closer than most wolves, one might even say."

I furrowed my brows in confusion. She talke

    >As I picked up the khaki letter Lady Chihiro had given me, she sarcastically advised, "I'd suggest reading the first letter before reading this one."It took me a moment to understand what her words implied. When I did, my eyebrows raised in surprise and disbelief, "Wait a minute! Did my mother write this letter?"She sat back satisfied and smirked, "You reached that conclusion all on your own. I didn't say anything. And I will neither affirm nor deny that assumption." But I was not satisfied. I needed answers. How could my mother be sure that I'd choose to come at the club? Lady Chihiro was good at guessing my thoughts through my facial expressions. So, she said, "Go home Zoe Simmons, and read the letters in peace," She paused before adding, "Preferably alone."Talking about Xavier, I realized that he was probably still with all those guards in the waiting room."Xavier is my mate," I had no idea where the sudden protectiveness came from but I had the urge to defend h

    >Zoe and Xavier were about to head to the hotel they were staying at when they received a text from Maisie. They chose to go to her first since she couldn't leave her sanctuary. She had been very vague about who was after her and why. Zoe didn't press because she knew how hard some traumas affected people and one needed time to be able to talk about some things."Hey, how did it go? I was starting to get worried when I didn't receive any update." Maisie started as soon as Zoe and Xavier entered through the door of her new space."Unexpected," Zoe said."That's one word for it," Xavier said as he sat on a much cleaner couch than Maisie had previously."What happened to the old dump?" Zoe asked as she sat beside Xavier and looked around Maisie's new space."All thanks to your mate," Maisie said and before Zoe could complain about that relationship, Maisie said to Xavier gratefully, "I don't know what you said to the landlord, but he has never been this nice. It's almost susp

    >After being kidnapped and traded by that crow-witch creature, I woke up in strange surroundings. One look and an instant dread settled in my heart. That feeling turned to panic when I realized I couldn't move much.Even though I had never seen a dungeon, somehow, I knew I was in one then. It was dirty, dark, and damp. But, the worst was the cold. As a werewolf, I had never truly felt cold. Yes, winters were chilly but my grandmother came from a line of arctic werewolves. Cold was where we thrived. Or, so I had thought. That cold was something else. It was claw marks and dried blood on the ancient stone walls. It was the stink of death and decay. It was loneliness and unbreakable metal chains. It was hopelessness. And it felt like it was seeping into my soul with every passing minute. At first, I tried to break the chains, to try and find a way to escape before anyone found me out. But I could neither break the chains, nor anybody came. I don't know how much time passed. My

    >I opened my eyes when I felt something prick my wrist."What are you doing to me?" I barely mumbled. The lack of energy was getting worse. "Shsh, you will be alright. Everything will be alright." She said softly while caressing my matted hair away from my face."Why am I here?" I asked, but given how quickly my consciousness was fading, I don't think she heard me.~The next time I woke up, I felt more conscious. I was still weak, but I could hear clearer. I opened my eyes and noticed the room that I was in. At first glance, it seemed like a sterile hospital room. But then, I moved my head and noticed a girl working on the bench to my left, facing away from me.I tried not to let her know I was awake before I knew where the exit was."I know you are awake." The girl spoke calmly without turning. "Wha-" I tried to talk but this time my throat was too dry to speak. She turned toward me and saw her facial features were so similar to the crow/witch who had died that I a

    >I was hungry, thirsty, and exhausted. But I had to keep going. My escape was probably noticed and that meant Carmen was dead. I held her necklace tighter in my hand and followed the sounds of running water.I reached a stream, just like Carmen had said that I would. I washed up and had a long drink. My stomach grumbled in hunger but I needed to keep moving. I don't know how long I walked. My feet had blisters. The evening was bringing darkness and cold. I shivered but kept going. Carmen had risked her life for mine, I trusted her enough to show me the path to safety. One more step on the mossy stream bank and I slipped, instantly losing consciousness because of how exhausted I was.~The next time I woke up warm. It felt like a foreign feeling. I groaned and instantly someone was by my side."Careful, you are still weak." A voice just as soft as the bed that I was lying in called from my side. I opened my eyes and looked around the dimly lit room. It looked like a

    >"So, Carmen sacrificed herself to save you. Why?" Lana asked as she prepared a large bucket of water to be used as a bath for me."She wanted to avenge her sister," I said like that was obvious."I get that. But why you? Why not somebody else?" Lana pressed so, I decided to confront her, "Lana, if you have something to say to me, just say it.""Nothing. I was just curious. Didn't mean to offend you." She shrugged and got the bath ready."You didn't offend me but I believe my presence offends you. Did you know Carmen?" I asked. She didn't reply momentarily before confessing, "She was my best friend. She was more than a friend, she was like my sister.""I'm sorry. I have a best friend who is like a sister, too. I know how devastated I would be if anything happened to her." I said softly, hoping that Zoe was better off than I was."Your water is ready. Wash up, I'll bring some fresh clothes." She only said before leaving me alone with my thoughts.Once bathed and dressed

    >One day I woke up like usual and got ready for another day of hard work. I didn't mind. The bonds I was making and the things that I was learning were so much fun. I got dressed, had a light breakfast, and got out of the cottage that I was sharing with Lana and her brother, Marco.Marco was the older one who had found me at the edge of the village and carried me to safety. He was a member of the patrol guard responsible for taking care of the village borders. He was seldom home and when he was, he was only there to sleep or get a change of clothes.Lana and I had grown closer. She had helped me get the hang of things. We even shared a few classes. She had proven to be a good mentor. That day, I was going to meet Lana for another history lesson. As I walked outside, I noticed Marco coming home, "Hey, you've seen Lana?" He asked.I was briefly distracted by his tall muscular frame though he did look exhausted. Most nights he had back-to-back patrols which tired him but

I wanted to remember my mother. What kind of daughter would I be if I deleted my mother from my life?"How about we order Chinese and talk? You've had a long day." >I had only been to the cabin with Xavier once. So, without the GPS that Jacob had set up, I'd be entirely lost.I tried to stay calm as the evening turned to the night. The cabin was a couple of hours away from the tunnel opening. I didn't know who built the cabin or of they knew about the tunnels. But, they had chosen the safest location in all of the pack, for a secluded, secret place. No wonder Xavier loved to go there to relax.I parked the car in the cabin garage that was also a storage room. Using the keys from the glove box of the car, I got inside the cabin and was instantly hit by the memories of amazing, passionate time that Xavier and I had spent there. At that time, the worst problem in my life was saving my Dad and not falling for the Alpha the thought of whole sent delcious shivers down my spine. The place was just as I remembered it. The paintings, the empty canvases, the easel and random splashes of color here and there, and the hammock where I had spent

    >Lady Shaw knew her son, just as well as Xavier knew his father. Elder Shaw stood with his hands in his pockets like this was midday and not a strange middle-of-the-night, random visit that he had never done in his life before. He knew how he looked, he didn't care."Mother, step aside, let's have some late-night tea," He spoke with authority that he did not have over his mother who, according to him, was still the acting Alpha of the pack."It is late, son," Lady Shaw frowned, "Either say what you came to say or leave.""You do not look like you just got out of the bed to open the door, Mother," He smirked."Neither do you," Lady Shaw retorted."Well, I never said that I was in bed." "Neither did I,""In that case, you wouldn't mind a cup of tea with your only son, would you?""As a matter of fact, I would." Lady Shaw was losing patience, "I don't drink tea. Never have. And neither do you. So, skip the antics.""Fine, you got me," He sighed, not even pretending like he

    >"Lady Shaw, the visitor is very persistent," Mrs. Hass spoke softly."Well, why didn't you ask the visitor's identity? Who do they think they are? To show up at the door of an old woman and demand an audience?" While Lady Shaw felt inconvenienced, she quickly got up. Because she knew that if somebody had the audacity to come to her door without an appointment and demand a meeting asap, it must mean that person either had everything at stake or nothing to lose. Either way, being the acting Alpha in the absence of her grandson meant that she had more responsibility for the people of her pack than she ever did before and she had been trying her best to keep things as smooth as she could."Call them in," Lady Shaw said to Mrs. Hass."I'm afraid they are already in, Ma'am." Mrs. Hass gave her best apologetic expression."Oh, Goddess. Now, that is going a step too far," Lady Shaw walked out of her bedroom where she had retired to rest for the night. Her feet stilled before her

    >Xavier and Zoe rode the public transport to get as close as they could without getting spotted. They had memorized the route they were going to take to get to his cabin in the woods. It was of the places that did not have any underground tunnels leading to it.They had used the map of Blood Crescent's underground tunnels to get as far in the pack and as close to the cabin as they could. These were the same tunnels Luca's handler had used to smuggle him in the pack for his first mission. As soon as they resurfaced in the pack territory, Jacob was there with a car. Xavier had sent him an encrypted message through a secure line that they had been using to communicate over the past few months that Xavier was away.Xavier had updated Jacob about his brother and his long-awaited return to the pack while Jacob had kept him updated about Claire and the rest of the major happenings in the pack. Apparently, his father had kept his head down while Xavier was away but they knew that

    >Zoe and Xavier spent the rest of the rest of the day discussing the contents of the flash drive with Luca. There was a lot of information there, but at the same time, a lot of critical information was still missing. For example, there were no proper coordinates of the bases, no real names were used, and there was no information about how long everything had been going on or who was funding it all.The only thing they concluded from the information was that the ones running these projects were sadistic bastards and worse were the people funding these who clearly had some dark ulterior motives. Zoe thought the worst was what each project's samples had to go through during the experiments. No one deserved to be put through such trauma-inducing horrors. But, for Xavier, the worst was not knowing who to trust anymore. He had no idea who was directly involved in these horrendous projects like his father and Claire. Luca briefed them about everything he had come to know so fa

I still have huge empty patches but at least I know who I am." Luca said and clicked on a folder that was locked. He added the password making Xavier ask, "How did you know that?" "Neil added a file in here among my files that had all the passwords and decryption codes required." Luca answered and turned the laptop to Xavier, "All yours, Alpha."Zoe leaned in as Xavier started scrolling through the many folders with names like Project Winter, Project Obsidian, and Project Twilight. His eyes caught a familiar name and he stilled."Do you know this one?" I wandered the hallways confused having no idea what was happening. I tried a few doors through the hallway, but they were locked or had no one in them. The power returned in around fifteen minutes but no one returned. Getting bored and being a good soldier, I returned to my training. Only when I turned on the VR to resume my simulation, all I saw were pictures of Jacob, Mom, Xavier, and all my friends and fellows from Blood Crescent. What matters is that Luca is here and alive. We found him and he remembers you."Xavier sighed, "I know. But I have to. If my own father can stoop so low as to put the safety of his people in jeopardy for personal gains, there is no telling how far he is willing to go for them," He glanced at Zoe and Zoe could see the pain in his eyes from his father's betrayal. No matter how awful a parent is, the child always keeps hope for the better. Xavier had realized in that moment, that there was no hope for his father. He was just as awful as the people Xavier had spent his time fighting to protect his people from. He just never realized that the real threat was living in the Shaw mansion. He looked back at the file and flipped the page to begin reading from the top,~
