Thirty-Two

With a heavy heart, I walked into the Hospice clutching a bouquet of roses I got for Carmen. It was really sad that she lost her mom to cancer after everything they had been through together.

Unlike Lycans, humans were weak and so many of them died every day, helpless and ravaged by sicknesses. Lycans died mostly from childbirth, poison, or old age.

After checking the reception desk for the room number, the nurse gave me directions on where to find Carmen, and I thanked her, hurrying down the corridor and passing by several other patients and their visitors.

It was depressing coming here, and I wondered how the patients were feeling, knowing that they were. One of the patients was so frail and her eyes were a pale green that shimmered with hope.

I shuddered at the thought and quickened my pace.

A cold dread filled my chest when I passed the room that Carmen's mom formerly occupied. The bed was neatly made, the curtains were drawn, and the monitor was silent.
