Chapter four.
Cana pov. Immediately I entered the car, my eyes roamed around the car for a while before it landed on him. Only to find out that he was staring at me. “Are you okay?” He asked with a soft tone. “Well, I was rejected on my wedding day, but I am over it now and I am fine,” I said. A smile shadowed his lips; he stretched forth his hands. “Lycan Zane,” he introduced. I took his hands with a smile. I already knew his name. He was a lycan. No wonder Alpha Alex always made sure he gave him the best treatment possible. Lycans were also considered rulers of a pack, but they were higher than. Alphas. He started the car and started driving in a comfortable silence. “How long did they banish you?” He asked, suddenly breaking the silence. “Three years” He nodded and fixed his attention on the car again. ain “Do you miss home? I mean, your friends or guardians. I could talk to Alex to take you back,” he offered. On a normal no note, I would have taken that offer but right now, no. The only friend I had was Mai, and I am sure I was a burden to her because she always had to protect me. Derek, my guardian, was already fed up with me. He never said it but I knew deep down within me. He was usually mocked for having a weak wolf. One day, he quarreled with his best friend and his best friend and outrightly called me a human. “You call that weakling your daughter? She’s a curse at our park. I would rather father a human being than father her” I expected Derek to rebuke him and call him names or kick him out. Anything to show that he was by my side instead, he said. “Well, she is my brother’s child. If she was someone else, I would have gotten rid of her a long time ago. It would free me from this mockery” After I heard him, I went to my room to cry silently. Using my pillow to cover my mouth to avoid any form of noise. “Cana! Cana!” A voice called out, because it sounded very far and distant to my ears. Zane gave me a little tap on my leg, making me flinch. “I have been calling you,” he said. I nodded and sat up, trying to remember our last conversation before my flashback. “Oh, that. Don’t bother yourself. I have decided to start afresh,” I said with a tight smile. He observed my face for a while before he focused back on the road. Sooner than later, sleep helped me. A light tap on my cheek woke me up, only to find out that we had gotten to the Orleans park. “We have arrived here. Please follow me” he said. He already has my bags in his other hand. I came out of the car but halted on my steps when I saw the sight before me. This palace was bigger than the other one back home. I can’t even call this a palace. I would call it a castle made up of little magnificent luxurious buildings. About eight of them. The main one stood in the center with four tall pillars at the front to support it. It had a water fountain in the middle. Beautifully peacocks and other birds roamed around adding beauty to the place. Maids and guards wearing uniforms were working around doing their normal activities. I smiled at one of them. I was sure I would soon become a maid like them. “Cana!” Zane called out again. He stood a few steps away from me. I quickly walked towards him. “It seems you have a habit of always zoning out,” he said with a tight smile. I smiled back. “Forgive me, Lycan,” I said. He nodded with a smile, his blue eyes staring at me. “Lycan,” he murmured as if I had done something wrong. “I never knew we were back to formalities’ ‘ he said in a disappointed tone as he walked towards the palace. I followed him trying to keep up with his fast pace. His muscles tightened as he walked without sparing me a glance. What have I done this time? I asked myself. Immediately we got inside he beckoned on one of the maids. “Take her to my room.” He ordered me to give my bags to the maid. I furrowed my eyebrows. Why was he sending me to his room? I opened my mouth to object to his decision but he had already walked away. She took me to his room and gave me a chair to wait for him. Anytime I tried starting a conversion she would give me a direct answer. Like yes or no. He came an hour later, panting heavily. His white shirt was soaked with sweat thereby revealing his nipples and his abs. My heartbeat fastened as warmth rushed through my body. I turned around immediately as my cheeks reddened. Gosh! I was not meant to be having such thoughts. He walked straight into an inner room before I heard the shower turn on. I think that was his dressing room. He came back dressed in a black turtleneck long-sleeve shirt and grey sweatpants. He took a chair before me and cleared his throat. “From now henceforth, you will be calling me by my name, Zane. Not,” he ordered sternly. “But-” I began, he held his hands in the air. “No, but. You will call me Zane” he ordered his voice stern with anger. “Okay Zane” I bowed my head. Why did he sound angry? He was a Lucan after all. He walked towards me, eating the space between us. I step backward. What was he doing? “Cana” he called, I remained in my position afraid of what would happen if I raced my head. My body seemed to be reacting differently around him even more intensely than when I was around Alex. “Look at me,” he ordered. He used his two middle fingers to raise my chin, making me look at him. I struggled to close my eyes. He was too close, his warmth caressing my body. His eyes scanned my face before it landed on my lips. I nervously bit my lips, and his eyes darkened the more. He leaned closer as his thumb caressed my lips. Anticipation trickled down my spine, I could feel warmth down my thigh. Bang! The door opened revealing a white-haired man, he looked like someone who was in his late sixties. I immediately jumped backward in his presence. His face was masked with a frown as he glared at Zane. “What is she doing here?” He asked him with a glare. Zane stood beside me “I brought her here, Uncle” he said. I tilted my head. Uncle? So he was Zane’s uncle. “You and I know that she can’t be here. Take her back to her park and get ready. Your betrothed is here to see you” he announced. I looked at Zane and then at his uncle. Why was he so bent on making me go? But the pain of rejection could not be compared to the pain of betrayal I felt when I discovered he was betrothed.~Cana’s POV:Hearing the words that had been spoken by Zane’s uncle was like a punch to the gut. For the second time tonight, the sick feeling of betrayal washed over me. I looked between Zane and his uncle, not sure what to say after hearing that Zane was betrothed. I didn’t have anything to say. The man In front of me was a total stranger, except for the times when I caught a glimpse of him visiting the pack house and the well-known fact that he was a Lycan, I knew nothing about him. So, who was I to feel betrayed? “I want her gone,” His uncle hissed. “Uncle Callahan-“ Zane tried to speak up, but his uncle cut him off. “She’s not worth it, Zane. I want her gone and you out in the main parlor as soon as possible.”Callahan, as I now knew his name, glanced once in my direction, throwing me a nasty look that I had too familiar with in less than a day, before storming out. Zane sighed as soon as the door slammed shut and turned to me. “You…have a betroth?” The words rolled off my
After changing into a more presentable outfit, I checked out of the motel with Zane carrying my things. He threw the bags into the trunk of his car and held the door open for him to step in. Although I was still keeping my guard up against him, I whispered words of gratitude under my breath and sat down.Once Zane got behind the wheel, he spoke up. “I know a good restaurant around here,” He turned to face me briefly and said. “Why don’t we go there for breakfast, then I’ll explain.”I didn’t see a problem with that. The faster I found out what he wanted from me, the sooner I would be able to get away from him and start planning my new life. Three whole years of living alone and away from the pack…I wondered how I was going to cope. But I sure as hell wasn’t going to go back and beg them. “Sure,” I nodded. “Let’s do that.”Zane started the engine and drove off. Soon, we arrived at a fancy-looking restaurant. All the buildings around the restaurant towered over it, but the décor and
~Cana’s POV:I sat in the center of the queen-sized bed of a motel, staring absentmindedly at the two cards in front of me. The first was the black card Zane had given me and the second was his business card. But the latter didn’t disturb me as much as the former did. For crying out loud, it was a freaking black card, with an unlimited spending limit. And, imagine the surprise that washed over me when I saw the balance. The numbers were uncountable, unlike anything Axel had ever entrusted to me. This was one of the reasons why this card bothered me so much. Groaning, I allowed my body to fall back onto the bed and curled on my side. ‘All this was too much,’ I silently complained. As if being banished from my pack, being humiliated on my wedding day, and getting rejected by my mate wasn’t enough, the moon goddess had decided to do what? Throw in a little funny trope into my already sad life? Groaning, again, I turned and curled on the other side, seeking a certain amount of comfo
~Cana’s POV:The group seized their wicked cackling and Ivy rushed to withdraw her foot, granting my bruised palm freedom. Hissing in pain, I stood up and examined my hand. Suddenly, it was snatched from me as Zane made his presence known beside me.He was standing close and he examined my hand with a deep frown. His touch and proximity had me gulping and looking away. And the scent of his pheromone wasn't helping any better. It smelt so sweet, yet masculine that it made me grow red in the cheeks and my wolf wild. "So delicious!" It screamed, wanting to have a piece of where the intoxicating scent was coming from. I couldn't blame her. 'Cana,' I quickly scolded myself. 'Focus on the matter at hand.'As if being reminded by my mind wasn't enough, the whispers of Ivy's cliques soon reached my ears, pulling me back to reality. "I-isn't that Alpha De Luca? Why is he here and...why is he touching that filth?" One of the girls whispered. Her followers were quick to agree. "She's goin
~Axel’s POV:I had just concluded a meeting with the pack elders when Ivy stormed through the front door, looking like she had cried for three hours straight. Her eyes were swollen, her nose red and mascara stained her face, leaving rails of the tears she had shed. Seeing her this way tore at my heart and in seconds, I rushed to her. “My love, what happened? Did you encounter trouble? Talk to me?” I gently rubbed her back as I pulled her into my arms. She sniffled and I held her tight, allowing her to cry and sob into my chest, not caring if her tears stained my white shirt. After a while, she pulled away and I noticed the rage in her eyes.“Who did this to you, baby?”“It was her,” She hiccupped. “Cana,”My fingers froze in place, halting the comforting motion they had been rubbing on Ivy’s back. My eyes narrowed and I felt anger rise within me. “Cana did this? She made you cry?”Ivy nodded. “She humiliated me, Axel. Just because of a simple mistake, she…she had me humiliated and
~Zane’s POV:“Alpha De Luca?” There was a gentle knock on the door of my office, followed by the voice of my assistant. “Are you there, Alpha?”“Come in,” I responded, putting aside the file I had been reading. The door opened and in walked Sheila, my assistant, carrying her usual tablet close to her chest. She bowed to greet and I nodded in acknowledgment before asking “Is there something wrong?”“Um, yes,” She walked towards me. “Ms. Vivian called and asked that I inform you that Ms. Cana had quit her position at the restaurant.”My brows creased upon hearing the announcement. “What?”“She said she found a better offer elsewhere.”Lies, I could tell, after all, Cana herself had admitted to being new in this city, there was no way she could have gotten a better offer overnight. Then, did that mean she quit because she didn’t want to be near me?The thought made my heart heavy and out of habit, I took off my reading glasses and pinched the bridge of my nose. Why was Cana trying so
~Axel's POV:I was as angry as a bull when I got back home. How dare those two treat me like I wasn't the alpha of the Manhattan pack. I hadn't expected much from Cana, but Zane, everything about what he did today hit me like a truck. Our packs had been in a no-violence treaty for years. We cooperated and existed like neighboring villages, but now, he had broken that treaty. The bastard had the guts to lay his hand on me and it was all because of Cana. I wasn't sure what type of sorcery she had used on Zane, but I'd be an idiot to sit on my butt and watch her caddy about her wicked plan. "We have to expose her evil deeds and bring her in front of both packs to apologize, only then would she have atoned for the disgrace she caused us today.' My wolf growled and I agreed. That is the best way to handle this situation, I thought as I climbed up the stairs and scoffed as I remembered Zane's words. Yeah right, no Alpha in his right mind would ever accept a mate as useless and weak a
~Cana’s POV:“Alright, now I know I agreed to go along with you, but first, we have to lay down some ground rules,” Pulling out a white piece of paper and grabbing a pen, I took a seat opposite Zane and placed the writing materials on the coffee table in between us. “Ground rules?” He arched his brows and stared at me like I had just said something he never expected to hear from me. “Like what?”“Firstly,” I picked up the pen as I began. “I shall not be forced to do, say, or wear things I am not comfortable with, nor want to do.”After scribbling that down, I paused and glanced in his direction. He nodded once, indicating that he was listening and agreed to my first set of rules. “Secondly,” I resumed writing. “We are not, in any way, shape or form, mates. You’re still betroth, which means whatever it is we have, is just an arrangement. Is that clear?”Zane’s eyes flickered with uncertainty, but he nodded once.“Good. Next, I want a room, preferably the one farthest away from yours
