Halfway to the trees, Reese paused and cocked his head. He listened intently, frowned. "I do not hear anything."

"Yes, there is ... come here." I waved him over and ran a few more steps towards the whimper.

Reese followed me without comment. His ears pricked up, paying attention to every little noise.

We ran along the top of the toboggan run, getting closer and closer to the grove on the other side. It wasn't until we were halfway inside that Reese finally seemed to notice it. "Did you hear that?" He looked around, back to the place where we had stood before. It was nearly twenty yards away.

"I've always had pretty good ears."

He gave me an indefinable look before he went further into the little wood, always after the quiet whimper.

I followed him, looking around the canopy of the trees. Max had said Bastian could save himself in a tree, so I assumed he was still in it. Oryx couldn't climb. They could jump incredibly high, but their hooves k

"I will make sure that you never again ...""He just saved your son's life!" I hissed at him.“It's his fault! He has not attached any hazard warnings! "“He put it up, I saw it with my own eyes! That's why you should be grateful to him and not ... let go of me! "I snapped at Reese, who simply pulled my arm away. "What shoud that? Why don't you defend yourself when he throws false accusations around ?! "“Because it's no use. His son is badly injured and he needs someone right now to blame for it. Since I'm the obvious one. ""But this is wrong!""He doesn't care." Reese glanced over his shoulder back at Bastian and his family. "But that's not all my blood," Reese countered, looking a bit defiant."But it's not just Proles blood, either." Without paying any attention to us, Jilin pulled up her papers again. “And now get out of here. I have to write a complaint against Goldberg about his complaint against you. "Was that possible?Reese just snorted and then left the office.Since we were released, I hurried to come to his side. "Who is Suzanne?""You will notice that in a moment."For a moment I was out of step. Not because of what he said, but because he answered. No stupid comment, no scornful look and no stoic ignoring. I was speechless. He had said it normally, just as he spoke to everyone else. When I thought about it, he'd been almost ... nice since he'd been in the park. On the drive here and while we were writing the reports, he had behaved almost like a social person to me.I could get used to that , I thought as I walked down the corridor at

The door to the kennel hall almost slammed in my face. "Thank you too," I mumbled angrily and pushed it open again myself. Okay, Reese was mad at me, but that was no reason to break my nose by slamming the door in my face.Since I'd dared to put the gun on his chest, he was just as dismissive of me as he was this morning - maybe even worse.I mean, what was his problem? I just wanted to talk to Nick. Was he afraid I would fight his brother? Actually, I wasn't that uncertain about Reese. Or maybe it was just because he was a fool, or as Nick had said yesterday, that he liked being in control of everything. As soon as I had entered the kennel hall, the grunts and growls reached my ears. But the smell was much more overwhelming. Just like on my last visit, it stank of dirt, rot and animals. Didn't the windows open? I would have loved to hold my nose.I ran after Reese, grumbling. His bad mood had to rub off, but how can you get in a good mood with this thund

I will be waiting for your call.Should i really? After all, we were now something like a ... um, I still didn't really know what we were, but yesterday evening had been fun. And if it wasn't for Reese's dirty looks all along, I might have been able to enjoy Nick's company a little longer.“It's not a hair, it's a shadow,” Evangeline exclaimed and let the ID disappear into her pocket. "You are just jealous."With a raised eyebrow, Domenico pulled his tray closer to him. "What should I be jealous of, please?""To that I'm prettier than you."Laughing softly, he piled a piece of his casserole on the fork and let it disappear into his mouth. The discussion between the two did not help me with my little problem. Then again, why should it be a problem? I would just send him a message. Then he could decide for himself whether he wanted to react to it. Hey, I wrote, just thinking about you. This sound that tormented my ears was not the roar of a dangerous animal, no, it was the cheering of hundreds of people who almost pissed themselves into their panties for joy as they watched the proles in the aviary tearing each other to pieces. The warehouse was full. Every seat was occupied and the people who had not been given a seat crowded around the aviary. They screamed and cheered with joy when one of the proles roared in pain. It was the unknown Simia-Proles that had been locked in the cage with three Ossas. The huge, marten-like proles attacked from all sides, tugged at the ape descendant, bit, tore until it screamed in pain and the human pack in their euphoria huddled even closer around the aviary. They pounded against the chain link fence with flat hands, cheering and cheering on their favorite. The yellow fur of the Simia prole was already red from the attacks. It had opened its eyes wide and showed the ossas the considerable teeth, but the line-like teet

"I don't see what that has to do with you." It was like that. I didn't understand why he kept trying to interfere anyway. He eyed me again. His eyes flew over every inch of my body until they caught on my face. If I had known that you are such a cheap slut ... ""Be careful what you say," I growled in between."Why should I? Only little sluts can be pounded after such a short time! Pack your things and get out of here! You will never set foot in this apartment again, do you understand ?! ""I'm not a slut," I said, my eyes fixed on him. I didn't want to admit it, but that he thought something like that hurt me."Oh no?" He marched through the kitchen and loomed over me. "What would you call it then? Those words hit like a bomb. At first I was unable to make a single sound. Nick was in the hospital? Oh god, but ... no, no, no, that couldn't be! "What happened? Is he alright? He is hurt?"Alarmed by my tone, Domenico straightened up and the eternal smile on Evangeline's face disappeared behind a worried expression."He's fine," Reese replied calmly. "He's only a little pissed off because the cattle completely surprised him.""Cattle? What cattle? A proles? ”Oh god, something must have happened in the warehouse. "Is he ... what happened?""I don't see what that has to do with you."Oh please, not now, not on such a first topic, he couldn't do that to me! "Damn Reese, now stop this shit and tell me what about Nick!" The panic was clearly audible in my voice. Yes, it almost bordered on hysteria. But damn it, this was about my boyfriend too! "Grace?" Evangeline carefully put a hand on my arm. "What's happening?"I shrugged my shoulders blandly and could only keep my lips from trembling because I pressed them so tightly together.Domenico came up to me too. He took off my jacket and cell phone as if he thought I would collapse under the weight. I didn't want to know exactly what impression I made on them at that moment. "Tell us what happened."It was probably the worry in his gaze that made me part my lips. "Nick was attacked by an arbor and is now in the hospital." My voice sounded so indifferent and emotionally cold that I hardly recognized myself in it. “And Reese doesn't want to tell me where he is. I only know that the arbor tore his arm apart. ""Damn it," Evangeline cursed.Domenico ignored her. "We can call the hospitals and find out where he is.""And then?" I asked, looking up at him almost pleadingly. “Why should I do this? It's not that bad," mumbled Nick and rolled over on his back, yawning. I ignored Reese when Nick held out his hand to me. With the smile on his face, he seemed just the same again - nothing reminded of Mr. Who and the meat fork. Smiling, I ran across the room and sat down on the mattress with him. "How are you?" "Now that you're sitting next to me, better." That was really cute. "And your arm?" "I'll get him his painkillers," Reese announced and then disappeared from the doorway with one last hostile look at me. Nick looked after him thoughtfully. "He is angry." “Can you blame him? He was right, I shouldn't have just left the door open. " He turned his head so he could look me in the face. "Did I understand that correctly? You took out the garbage? " "I've cleaned up." "Where? Here?" "Well, the apartment." I shrugged my shoulders indifferently. "Just cleaned up a little." "Why?" Hm, an honest answer might

I ignored him and reached into the basket again, but before I could even touch the laundry, he had roughly grabbed my arm and pushed me towards the kitchen door. I stumbled and didn't fall because I could catch myself on the sofa. I hit my leg in the process, but the pain in my arm was much worse. Reese had hit the exact same spot where Nick grabbed me yesterday morning. There was a bruise on my skin there and it fucking hurt when he pressed there."And now finally get out of here and don't be seen here anymore!"I didn't think I was as angry with another person as I was at this moment in my life. No matter what kind of problems he had, it didn't give him the right to talk to me like that and that's why there was only one thing I could say back. "No."Reese blinked once, as if he couldn't believe what I'd just said of myself. "What did you say?""I said no. Nick wants me here and I won't go until he demands it. ”I straightened up and glared at him.

Nick was my friend and I had every right to be here.I listened carefully to his steps. I could tell exactly when Reese stepped into the kitchen and saw me on the clothes horse. It wasn't just the fading of the noises, it was almost like a dark aura that entered the room with him and tried to push me against the nearest wall. Anger. I could practically feel it.But he didn't say anything, just stood silently in my back and that made me more nervous than if he had yelled at me straight away. Why didn't he say anything? I tried not to show my nervousness and just pulled the next item of laundry out of the basket. “I've already put the res

Taking a deep breath, I pushed myself off the wall and marched back into the kitchen. I was not finished yet. The dishes were still waiting and the floor also had to be mopped. The only room that escaped my cleaning madness was Reese's room, and only because he would probably cut me into four and then dump me with Mr. Who's remains if I even set foot in there. I had even cleaned the surface of Nick's room. Very quietly so as not to wake him up. He seemed to need sleep. The kitchen finally looked homely. I had even cleaned the upholstery of the couch with whatever was available to me. That alone had cost me an hour.Sighing, I stood at the sink and began to work on the soaked dishes. That was not that easy, because although I had put it in the water almost two hours ago to get the dried up food scraps away, there were some stubborn stains that resisted steadfastly and so I stood at the sink for a while before I did the last plate hoisted the white flag and was clean aga

I promised." I broke away from him, ran my hand over his stubbly cheek. The blond shadow of the beard was barely visible, but the dark circles under the eyes emerged very clearly. And also the pale skin color. He wasn't doing well, but I couldn't tell if it was because he had just stabbed his pet because I didn't like it, or the injury and the medication. But I knew one thing very well. "You belong in bed.""I've been in bed all morning." His hand also came to rest on my cheek, the hand with which he had just stabbed so coldly.I had to pull myself together hard not to shrink from it. “And with good reason. Come on, we'll put you under the covers again. "He chewed his lips briefly, looking in my eyes for an answer whose question I didn't know. "Will you stay with me?"That was probably the first real smile he got from me today. "Naturally. That's why I'm here, right? I lie down with you. ""OK."Since he didn't move, I took his hand a

Reese built this cage for me," he said quietly. His hand loosened the cramp on the grille and brushed toward the door. “He put a lock in, you see? Only he can open the cage. He doesn't give me the key. He always carries it with him. "Confusion showed on my face. Why did he tell me this?“Back then, Norbert told Reese that I should get a pet. It might help me to keep my balance, it makes me feel responsible, but I never got the key. ”He gave me a wry smile. His eyes looked slightly glazed, his gaze somehow distant. Was he still under the influence of the medication?“Nick, please get out of there. You belong in bed. "“He never gave me the key. I could only feed Mr. Who. ”His hand fell off the cage. There was something sad in his eyes as he turned and crossed the room to the kitchenette. The door was ajar. I still didn't feel comfortable being here. I was happy and was able to assure myself that Nick was fine, but I was absent from the academy without excuse and that gave me a massive stomach rumble. I had never skipped before. "Nick?""In the kitchen!" He called back.I took off my shoes and jacket and then took the now familiar path - although you couldn't really speak of familiar, after all, I had only been here twice. And once Reese chased me away. What would he say if he caught me here now? What did I care? It was absolutely none of his business! I just had to keep telling myself that, maybe at some point I wouldn't really care what he was thinking. I didn't even understand why I didn't care. Why did I care what Reese thought? On the whole, he was just angry that this happened to him. ""So he's fine?" Where did my powerful voice go?Evangeline nodded. “Yes, he was given painkillers and sedatives.
