Zara POV

I leaned against the cold stone wall, my breath coming fast. The sounds of the celebration inside the grand hall felt distant, muffled. My fingers trembled slightly as I clenched them into fists. I had failed.

I had one job, to make the Alpha King notice me, but he had dismissed me like I was nothing.

Bradlyn’s warning rang in my head. You have until the end of this night to make him notice you.

The weight of my family’s lives crushed me. I had to do something. I couldn’t let this be the end. I straightened my dress, took a deep breath, and forced my legs to move. The ceremony was still in full swing. I had to try again. As I stepped back into the hall, I scanned the room, searching for him, Cade hadn’t left, He stood near the high table, speaking to another Alpha. His posture was relaxed, yet every inch of him radiated power.

I couldn’t just walk up to him again. That would be reckless, I needed another way.

My eyes landed on a group of she-wolves standing near the center of the hall. They were all high-ranked, their beauty effortless, their dresses shimmering under the golden light. They laughed and whispered among themselves, stealing glances at Cade of course.

Every unmated she-wolf in this room wanted his attention and he had ignored them all, Just like he had ignored me.

But there was something different about him tonight. He was here, but he wasn’t really here, his body stood among the guests, but his mind was elsewhere.

That meant one thing, Cade didn’t want to be here.

If he was forced to attend this ceremony, then the last thing he would be interested in was meaningless flirtation.

I had approached him the wrong way!

He wasn’t a man who could be seduced with a soft voice or a shy smile. He wasn’t interested in mindless conversations or empty praise and If I wanted him to notice me, I had to do something no one else in this room would dare to do.

I took another deep breath, gathering every ounce of courage I had left, and walked toward him.

This time, I didn’t hesitate, I didn’t act nervous, I didn’t lower my eyes.

Instead, I stopped a few feet away, just within his peripheral vision. And then, I turned my back to him and ignored him.

The movement was small, but it was enough, the shift in the air was immediate, the other Alphas were still talking, their voices low and serious. Cade remained silent.

And then, slowly, too slowly, he turned his head, he was watching me.

I could feel it, the weight of his unseen gaze pressing against my back like a physical touch. A spark of hope ignited in my chest, but I forced myself to remain calm, I had his attention and now, I had to keep it.

I reached for a nearby tray and picked up a glass of wine, bringing it to my lips without glancing in his direction. Every movement was deliberate, every breath controlled. For the first time tonight, I wasn’t trying to make him notice me.

And that was exactly why he was noticing me now.

The other Alphas continued their conversation, but Cade’s silence stretched longer. His presence was like a force, unmoving, waiting.

Then, "Everyone leaves." The words were calm, quiet but the effect was immediate. The Alphas fell silent, then one by one, they turned and walked away.

I swallowed hard, keeping my face composed even as my heart slammed against my ribs and then, the space beside me shifted.

He had moved.

I braced myself as his deep, smooth voice finally broke the silence. "You’re trying too hard."

A shiver ran down my spine.

I turned my head slightly, meeting the sliver of his face visible beneath the mask.

"Am I?" I asked, my voice steady. His gaze was unreadable, his mask revealing nothing. But his presence was overwhelming, his power pressing down on me like a storm ready to break.

"Yes." His voice was calm, detached. "You want something from me." My fingers tightened around the stem of the glass.

"You’re right," I admitted, exhaling softly. "I do." There was no point in denying it. A man like him would see through the lie in an instant.

Cade tilted his head slightly, as if assessing me. "Then say it."

I hesitated for a while. If I asked too soon, if I pushed too hard, I would lose the tiny sliver of interest I had managed to gain.

So instead, I let a small, knowing smile touch my lips. "Not yet," I murmured, taking a sip of the wine.

His gaze darkened. "Careful."

A warning. My pulse quickened, but I forced myself to hold my ground. "Do you always threaten people who don’t give you what you want Alpha King?" I asked.

A long silence.

And then, he smirked loudly, the sound was quiet, but it sent a strange shiver through me. It wasn’t amusement. It wasn’t warmth. It was something else entirely. Something dangerous.

"Interesting," he murmured and I swallowed, my grip tightening on the glass.

He took a step closer.

The scent suppressants were still working, but even without my wolf, I could feel him. His power. His presence.

"You’re not like the others," he said quietly. "You don’t look at me with fear."

I inhaled slowly. "Would you prefer it if I did?"

Another pause and then,  "No."

The air between us was thick, charged with something unspoken.

For the first time tonight, I felt like I wasn’t standing before a ghost, I was standing before a man, A dangerous, powerful man and I had his attention.

But the question was..Could I survive it?

Zara POV The door slammed shut behind Hannah, but the weight of her threat lingered in the air like a storm about to break. My hands curled into fists at my sides. I had known this wouldn't be easy. I had prepared myself for dangers far worse than an envious she-wolf. But the way she had looked at me like I was something she wanted to crush beneath her heel sent a shiver through me. I had made my first enemy at the Blackstone Pack. And I had no doubt she wouldn’t be my last. I exhaled, forcing my shoulders to relax. I didn’t have time to worry about Hannah. Right now, my focus had to be on Cade, He had noticed me. That was the first step, but if I wanted to get close enough to take his ring, I needed more than just his curiosity. I needed his trust. And trust wasn’t something a man like Cade gave easily. *_________* Waking up the next morning, I barely had time to gather my thoughts before a knock sounded at my door. Zara’s POVThe moment I stepped out of Cade’s chambers, my breath left me in a quiet exhale. The air in there had been tight with tension and something else I couldn’t quite name.I had done it.I had manged to do it or perhaps it was luck. But it was only the beginning. If I wanted his ring, I needed to be patient. Calculated. I needed him to trust me and I knew he doesn't trust anyone. His golden eyes, sharp and piercing, had made that clear. Even as he extended his offer, I had felt the weight of his suspicion beneath the surface, the quiet warning that failure meant death. But none of that showed on my face as I walked down the hallway of the Blackstone Packhouse. My footsteps echoed softly, my mind still replaying every detail of our conversation. I would be his personal attendant. That meant I would be at his side. Watch his movements. Gain his trust. And then…I would take what I came for.A flicker of satisfaction curled in my chest. But it was short-lived.Because as I turned

Between Cade’s unsettling gaze, Bradlyn’s unwelcome touch, and the weight of my own growing doubts, I needed a moment to breathe. To think. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. Because before I could even take a step further, sharp fingers yanked my hair from behind, and pain exploded across my scalp.I barely had time to react before my balance faltered, my knees buckling as I stumbled forward. Zara's POVFinally, I retired to my room, I had limped slightly all through till I got back due to Hannah's kicks on thighs which ached badly. I sat on the edge of my bed, my fingers fisted into the sheets as my mind churned with thoughts I couldn’t push away.It had been a month since my parents were thrown into the pack’s prison at Alpha Bradlyn's orders.A whole month. And I had done nothing. The guilt sat heavy on my chest, crushing me beneath its weight. My father, the man who had once stood tall, respected by the pack was now a prisoner. My mother, who had always cared for the sick and injured, was rotting in a cell. And I had let it happen.Tears burned my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my palms, the pain grounding me.I had to see them. It was reckless. It was dangerous. Had he been waiting for me?Slowly, he turned. "Where did you go?"The words came slow, demanding. Not out of curiosity. But accusation.I swallowed, forcing my voice to be normal. Zara's POV. Walking through the corridors of the pack house, I remained silent until we arrived at the door that led to the king's office. I stood at the threshold, my heartbeat loud in my ears as Cade’s Beta led me forward. Alpha Cade was seated at an ornate desk now, his fingers lazily tracing the rim of a silver goblet. A soft glow from the lanterns shine brightly across his strikingly handsome face, yet reflecting his stoic features to be even more deadly. His gaze lifted the moment I stepped inside and just like that, I felt exposed. There was no edge to his stare, no warmth, nothing I could decipher just a sharp, piercing intensity that saw everything in me like a mirror. His gaze suddenly swept over my torn dress, the faint bruises on my arms, and the tension in the room shifted. It wasn’t visible, but I felt it maybe because I wanted to think so. He didn’t speak at first. He simply exhaled, his fingers tapping against the desk. "Summon Alpha Bradlyn here again"

And then a smirk appeared on his face. Not just any smirk. A smirk that curled his lips slightly, teasing, dangerous, and utterly infuriating. "You're awfully quiet, Zara." I clenched my jaw. "I have nothing to say, Alpha." His eyes sparkled with amusement. " I think that’s rare for someone who knows how to survive" I had the strongest urge to glare at him, to snarl, to remind him that I wasn’t here for his amusement. The Alpha King was ruthless, known for his lack of mercy. He had barely acknowledged me beyond commands. So why—why did he sound so adamant about my healing? "Sit," Siriah’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I turned to see her gathering herbs and ointments, her eyes held no room for argument. I obeyed, slowly lowering myself onto the cushioned chair at the wall. The pain flared through my body, but I swallowed the discomfort. Siriah moved with practiced ease, crushing leaves into a thick paste. "What was that about?" I finally asked, watching her carefully. She didn’t glance up. "What do you mean?" I exhaled sharply. I turned, my chest heaving, and there he stood. At the edge of the courtyard, his presence was a storm brewing on the horizon. His icy gaze swept over the kneeling guards, and they visibly trembled under his stare. Even the crowd—the ones who had been watching the spectacle unfold—were silent now. The tension was dreadery. The moment my fingertips made contact, it slipped from its place, tumbling from the small pile of trinkets. I sucked in a sharp breath as it clinked against the floor, the sound far louder than it should have been in the small, quiet room. I froze, my pulse quickening. Why was this ring here? It looked exactly like the one I had seen on Alpha Cade’s finger. A strange unease crawled up my spine as I stared at it, lying there so innocently, yet feeling so dangerous. I hesitated for only a second before slowly reaching down to pick it up. "What do you think you’re doing?" The sharp voice made me jolt.
