KIARA
"I'm your mate, not her!" I cried out, tears rolling down my cheeks. Lucas regarded me with a cold stare. Then, he approached me and halted in front of me."Of course, you're my mate. But, you're here for a specific purpose," he said.My limbs trembled as I processed his statement. For what purpose had he decided to deceive me?I should've known that his romantic gestures towards me were all calculated."What purpose?" I choked out, my voice quivering.I didn't want to hear it.I was afraid it was something terrible. I was afraid to admit that I'd allowed myself to fall into his trap. The four weeks we'd spent together had consisted of him showering me with gifts.I could still recall the memory of his soft kisses and the way he'd engulfed me in his warm embrace. Was it all a blatant lie?"You're here as my breeder. You should feel honoured, princess" he drawled, reaching out to touch my face. I pushed his hand away, anger and bitterness filling my heart.Over my dead body would I spend the rest of my life as a mere breeder. This wasn't how I'd envisioned my future with my mate."I hate you" I spat.At that moment, I desired to bash his face in, with my fists. But, I couldn't do that. I was powerless. His eyes darkened."I don't care."He turned away from me and walked up to the other woman, pulling her into his embrace.Never in my life had I felt so humiliated."I reject you" I rasped. He frowned, his nose flaring."What?""I, Kiara Claris reject you, Lucas-""Guards! Lock her up in the dungeon!" Lucas commanded and my heart sank. Two guards grabbed me immediately, placing stone cuffs around my wrists."Why are you doing this to me?!" I cried."You are weak and pathetic. Bearing my children is the least you can do to help your mate" Lucas responded. While the guards whisked me away, I decided to reject him before I was out of his sight. So, like a mad woman, I screamed at the top of my lungs."I, Kiara Claris, reject you Lucas Fynnian, as my mate! May the moon goddess bear witness to this!"Right away, pain blossomed in my chest, stealing my breath. I understood it to be the pain of broken bonds.I didn't care anymore. As long as my connection to him had been broken. After I was locked up in the dungeon, I lost track of time. However, I noticed that my body was progressively weaker. Seconds bled into minutes. Hours painfully slipped by and several days passed. The cell smelt of mold and blood. At night, the cold was almost unbearable. Food was brought to me only once each day. It didn't take long before I began to think that I was better off dead.I felt physically sick. Each day, it grew worse. Worn out, the day came when I eventually passed out in my cell. When I came to, I found myself in my cell with Lucas. He watched me with keen eyes, a hint of a smile on his lips."What do you want?" I hissed coldly."To congratulate you" he replied, slipping his hands into the pockets of his pants."Why would you do that?" I questioned."You're carrying my child in your womb," was his response."Don't play games with me," I deadpanned.I probably looked like a starved lioness ready to pounce on her prey. But, deep down, I was trembling with fear. The last thing I wanted was having to deal with an unplanned pregnancy. He grinned."I'm not. You're six weeks pregnant. My healers confirmed it" he said, a smug grin on his face."Such a good girl. The healers will attend to you from time to time. Do not try anything funny" he said and left the cell.My breath caught in my throat, tears welling up my eyes."It's all my fault. It's all on me-" A sob tore out of my throat as I brought my hands to my face, a crushing pressure blooming in my chest...."My lady. It's me" a familiar voice said. Two days had passed since I learnt of my pregnancy.I looked up, my eyes widening at the sight of Cassy. The hood of her black leather coat draped over her head, casting shadows across her face."How did you get in?" I asked, bewildered."I'm here to get you out of here, Kiara" she said, taking hold of the chains keeping the cell door inaccessible."What about my father? Do you think he knows that I'm in here?" I asked."He doesn't seem to care. It was difficult to trace you all the way down to the dungeons. We have to get out of here, quickly."The chains in her grip began to crack as her eyes glowed a bright purple.Once the chains had fallen apart, she tossed them aside and swung the door open.Bringing me to my feet, she led me out of the cell."We will have to run. Can you do that?" She said.I stared down at my sprained ankle, my heart in my throat. Lucas had smashed my ankle the night he'd visited me and tried to have his way with me.This was my one and only opportunity to regain my freedom. I'd be damned if I let it go to waste."I must," I breathed."I heard about your pregnancy. The Lycans are not discrete about it" she said."It's my burden now. I brought it upon myself " I mumbled."We'll talk more about this, later. Right now, there are guards closing in on us. Let's hurry."We rushed down the corridor and dashed towards the rear exit where we encountered more guards. Apparently, Cassy had knocked out some guards on her way to the dungeon. As we sprinted towards the giant gates leading outside the palace, the gates began to close.Dread filled me, chilling me to the core.Cassy squeezed my hand, a determined look in her eyes."We're getting out of here today. I will make sure of it" she breathed.Lifting the sleeve of her coat, she ripped off the silver and black gem bracelets sitting on her wrists. My father had given it to her to keep her magic on a leash.Without it, she couldn't really control her magic."Stop them!" A Lycan yelled from behind us. I could hear the hair raising growls of the Lycans giving us a hot chase. My ankle was throbbing at this point. The pain brought tears to my eyes. But, I clenched my teeth against it.A Lycan lurched himself at me, his claws making their mark on my right calf."Get your claws off her!" Cassy screamed, channeling her powers in his direction. A wave of magic sent him along with the other Lycans crashing in the opposite direction.Gritting my teeth, I struggled to my feet, blood oozing out of the fresh wounds."You have to shift, Kiara!" Cassy said, dodging the bullet moving in her direction.Another gunshot went off. Crouching down, I squeezed my eyes shut and reached out for my wolf spirit. Allure took over in a flash.Cassy easily scooped my wolf form into her arms. I was relatively small, compared to other werewolves."Are you ready to fly?" Cassy breathed, flashing me a smile.Holding out a free hand towards the ground, her feet went off from the ground. With me in her arms, she floated upwards, far above the reach of the Lycans. The cold breeze swept through my fur and I turned to glance at the Lycan palace one more time."Kiara!" I heard Lucas yell, his thunderous voice rumbling within the palace walls."Don't worry, I'll make sure he never finds us. We just have to get out of the Lycan kingdom. Hold on for me, okay?"I looked away, mulling over my thoughts. If I wasn't so weak and useless. If only I hadn't fallen for Lucas' deceit. If only I hadn't been so desperate about finding a mate. With my wounds still bleeding, it didn't take long before I drifted off into unconsciousness. When I awakened, I was in the woods, lying under a tree. The moonlight was brilliant tonight.Slowly, I sat up."How are you feeling? I've healed your injury. But, you've been running a fever," Cassy whispered.I looked around, taking note of the trees and fallen brown leaves."Where are we?" I asked, wincing at the pounding in my head."The border between the kingdom of the northern Werewolves and the Lycans. Beyond this area is the territory of the rogues. It's been rumoured to be a dangerous place," she responded."Did you hear that?" I whispered when the sounds of footsteps reached my ears.Cassy sniffed the air, her eyes widening."Lycans! We have to get going" she whispered, worry etched onto her face."It's the scent of cherry blossoms! It's her!" Someone yelled.Panic stricken, Cassy and I took off running. The grounds seemed to lead up to a mountain. Therefore, it was getting harder to catch my breath. Cassy's strengthening spell was beginning to fade and the throbbing in my head had returned."This isn't good. Kiara we're entering rogue territory, " Cassy stressed.I turned back and sure enough we were being chased."Let's hope for the best" I gasped.Behind me, Cassy suddenly screamed. Terrified, I turned around only to find the Lycans holding her captive."Keep running! Don't look back!" She cried, her eyes filling up with moisture. The words had barely left her lips when one of them yanked at her arm, a resounding sickening crack ringing out. Cassy screamed in pain, her eyes squeezed shut. No, not her.Not my best friend.I can't lose her."Kiara! Run!" Cassy yelled, her voice hoarse.Tears pooled in my eyes, threatening to spill."If you don't run, I will never forgive you!" She sobbed, falling to her knees.I took a hesitant step backwards. Then, another.Sobbing, I took off in a sprint. By the time I got to the top, black spots were swarming around the edges of my vision.'Run, you have to keep running,' I urged myself as I pushed on.My feet came to a halt when I bumped into something hard. I looked up, my gaze finding a pair of beautiful golden eyes staring down at me. I'd just bumped into a man, I realized."Save me. Save...my friend. Save us, please" I croaked, sinking to my knees.KIARA The stranger crouched in front of me. With his big hand, he cupped my face. Wide eyed, I stared at him, mesmerised by how beautiful he was.A pair of dimples popped out on his cheeks when he smiled. He smelt of roses and vanilla. It was strange. I'd never met a man who smelt like that. But, again, I had only met a few men."Where's your friend?" The stranger asked softly. I couldn't look away. "Cassy... she's down there..." I stuttered, pointing towards the direction I'd come from."Sit tight for me, okay?" I found myself nodding like a little child. There was something about him that made me lower my guard. But, a part of me disliked this because it reminded me of Lucas. The moment he began to walk away from me, the Lycan's appeared, carrying an unconscious Cassy with them. There were so many of them, I couldn't help but worry that the stranger would fail to take them down all on his own. Struggling to my knees, I reached out for Cassy. Exhaustion hit me and I collapsed
DENZEL Wide eyed, my mate stared at me. I clenched my fists, frustrated. If she knew the truth, would she stay with me? She already seemed uncomfortable around me. I should have known that Wren would try to pitch my mate against me at the slightest chance she got. "Denzel? You don't have to say anything. It must've been painful for you. I apologize for my friend's insensitivity" Kiara said, giving me a smile. I stared at her, surprised. It was the least I'd expected her to do. Naturally, she was curious, I could tell. Nevertheless, she was more concerned about my feelings. A while ago, she'd refused to look me in the eye. This was good progress. "I'll take my leave now. A maid will be here to serve your meals" I said and she nodded. Her gaze followed me until I was out of the door. Terah, my wolf, growled in my head. He desired to spend more time with her. I did too. But, I knew I had to take things slow. Down the hallway, Wren was waiting for me, her head bowed. She w
KIARA He was warm and he smelt so good. Regardless of how hesitant, I was, I didn't want to leave his embrace. "Please," he whispered and I swallowed hard. His sincerity oozed from his words. He was tugging at the strings of my heart with so little effort. A few seconds slipped by and he pulled away, enough to look at me. "Your mate... the one you spoke of...is he the king of the Lycans?" He asked. Every muscle in my body went frigid. When I didn't respond, he sighed. "I didn't leave out that information on purpose. I didn't know how to tell you" I mumbled. With the pad of his fingers, he wiped away the tears on my face. I looked up, my gaze meeting his gentle ones. A few locks of his hair had fallen over his face. "Well, you're in luck. As long as you're in my territory, he will never get his hands on you again" he said, a mysterious glint in his eyes. "Now, go. You can ask the maids to take you around the palace. I have issues to attend to."I nodded and quietly left h
KIARA "Kiara?" He breathed, pulling away. I nodded, dragging in a shaky breath. "Yes, It's me. Can you smell my scent?" I whispered. Slowly, he moved away from me and got out of bed. He stood under the glow of the moonlight, staring at me with glistening obsidian eyes. His hair danced with the rhythm of the cool breeze that swept into the room, making him seem ethereal. Recognition flashed in his eyes. Next came the appearance of guilt that clouded his eyes."Kiara... I'm sorry. I didn't-"I cut him off, sitting up on his bed. "You didn't do anything wrong. You didn't hurt me, it's okay" I said. He brought a hand to his head, his chest heaving. "You shouldn't be here" he winced. "Your majesty? You should lie down" the green eyed stranger said as he approached Denzel with his hands outstretched. "Kiara, please... just... leave" Denzel croaked, leaning against the stranger who steadied him the moment his knees buckled. I fought the urge to stay there. Quietly, I walked out
KIARA "W-what? It's not possible," I said, suddenly feeling sick to my stomach. Melissa shook her head, her short blonde hair disheveled by her rapid movement. "I'm telling the truth, I swear. No one else knows. I saw him do it," she insisted. I stared at her, torn. There was no way Denzel could have murdered his own mate. He was gentle and kind. "He's not who you think he is. He has succeeded in fooling everyone else. Not me though.""Why are you telling me this?" I croaked. "You deserve to know the truth before it's too late. You must keep this from Denzel. If he finds out that you know about this, he's going to get rid of the both of us." "What?" I gasped, struggling to wrap my head around what she'd just said. "If you wish to know more, you can call for me. I'll tell you everything I know. For now, I have to go." She hurried out of my room before I could stop her. Right then, my knees gave out and I sank to the ground. The door opened and Cassy walked in, a puzzled loo
DENZEL My wolf was uneasy tonight. I couldn't figure out why. Every now and then, my claws would emerge. It was unsettling. I glanced at the moon through the window of my study. It was crescent shaped tonight. This meant that the power of the moon was at it's lowest. I saw no reason why my wolf was growing edgy. 'Your majesty! You need to see this!' Keenan's voice pierced through our mind link. I leaned back on my seat, furrowing my brows. Any time he called for my attention like this, the situation was never a good one. 'What's going on? Where are you?' I asked.'A scout reported that he saw the princess heading towards the cliff' he responded. I shot to my feet, confusion stirring within me.'The cliff? Why would she do that? Why didn't he stop her?' I demanded, storming towards the door of my study. 'He reported that he tried to stop her but she subdued him. He claimed that she'd appeared as though she was in a trance.'I gritted my teeth, my hands tightening into fist
KIARA "They're coming," Denzel said, his expression impassive. The words had barely left his lips when two Lycans stepped into my line of vision. A couple more joined a few seconds later. "What is this? Werewolves in our territory?" One of them drawled, his beady eyes twinkling with amusement. "I don't think they're just any kind of werewolves. Their auras are way too powerful," a red head said, eyeing us with disdain."The woman looks so fragile. Look at her, her skin is so fair. Look at her eyes, they're so innocent. Those eyes are asking us to ravage her," another Lycan said, licking his lips in anticipation. I could feel the rage stirring up within my mate. It was only a matter of time before he would completely lose control. This would result to blood shed. More Lycans would end up swarming to the scene once the smell of blood reached them. I didn't want this to happen. "We don't want trouble. We just want to go home," I blurted out the words without thinking. They bli
KIARA "What do you mean by brides?" I asked, clutching at the fabric of my loose night dress. Estella shrugged, flipping her hair over her left shoulder."It's just as I said. Denzel has made it his habit to murder his brides on the night before their wedding. Terrible, isn't it?" She said, chuckling darkly."Tell me more," I choked out, tears blurring my vision. "Not yet. Once I'm sure that you're on my side, I'll tell you. For now, I'll leave." She winked at me and turned away from me."Wait-""I'll come to see you soon. In the meantime, you should find out as much as you can. Bye," she said. Right after this statement, she snapped her fingers and vanished into thin air alongside her bodyguard. My eyes widened when I realised that the room had also changed. I was back in my room in Denzel's palace. This meant I'd never left the room in the first place. Estella had simply created an illusion of a different room. However, I had no idea how she'd entered the palace without being n
KIARA "Are you ready?" My mate asked me as I wrapped an arm around his waist and pressed a kiss to his bare back. We were both lying in bed on our first anniversary."I'm excited," I squeaked, and he chuckled. "You're finally getting to imprint on my mind. Of course, you should be excited," he replied, his voice laced with amusement. "Close your eyes. I'm gonna go in now," I whispered, delving into his mind. When I opened my eyes again, we were standing on top of a hill. There was a beautiful, clear waterfall directly opposite us, and there were bright red roses growing along the paths of the wide expanse of the mountains. The sky was a breathtaking pink, and the breeze was refreshingly cool. "Can I open my eyes now?" Denzel asked, and I chuckled, leaning into him from behind. "Yes."He glanced around, whistling under his breath. "Denzel?" I said, and he turned to look at me, his eyes wide with awe. Holding out a hand, I gave him a big smile."Let's go for a walk," I sugge
KIARA A scream tore through the air, and I narrowed my eyes, pulling the door open. Hurrying down the hallway, I reached out for Denzel through our bond. However, I got no response.More screams and cries filled the air, and my stomach churned. I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me what was happening. Lucas was here. The battle had officially begun. Maids scrambled in my direction, their dresses stained with blood. "Azalea," I breathed, worried about my daughter's safety. Just before I could get to the nursery, I saw Cassy running towards me with Azalea in her arms. Her eyes were wide with terror. "He's here. He's killing everyone," she panted. "Take her to the basement. Can you do that for me?" I asked, and she gulped. "Stay safe, Kiara. Please." She croaked. I nodded, patting her back. I watched her continue down the hallway. She suddenly vanished out of sight. Relieved to know that my daughter was in good hands, I crouched by the side of an unconscious guard and grabbed
KIARA Denzel and I sat in our bedroom with Azalea asleep in my arms. My mate had cleaned himself up and was now dressed in his robe. There was a blank expression on his face. It was obvious that we were worried about the fact that Lucas had stolen Ria's power. I still couldn't wrap my head around how he had managed to do that. With Ria's power in his possession, I was the only one who could truly put him down for good. But there was one problem. I was yet to remove the seal. Lucas could attack at any moment. However, we were not ready for him. I still didn't know what Lucas' plan was, and this was unnerving. "Don't worry too much about it," Denzel said to me, his gaze meeting mine. I knew he was trying to comfort me. But, at this point, it was the last thing I needed. I couldn't shake off the feeling that a much bigger war was coming. One which was capable of causing a much bigger catastrophe. If we weren't ready for it, we were bound to get destroyed. "What if he comes her
DENZEL "She was right here in her cot. I was standing by the window, preparing her food. When I turned around, she was gone," Kiara's maid said, her head lowered. We were in the nursery, and Kiara was pacing back and forth. I knew she was barely holding it together. "You didn't hear anybody walk in?" She asked, and the maid shook her head. "No one came in. I would've heard the door open."Kiara gripped several locks of her hair and tugged. I walked up to her, releasing her grip on her hair."Don't hurt yourself," I said, and she looked up at me, her eyes filled with both desperation and anguish."It's all my fault. I shouldn't have left her side. I should have stayed to protect her," she said, her voice trembling. "We will find her," I stated, and she shook her head feverishly."Lucas... what if he's the one who took her? What if he took her to get back at us? What do we do now? This can't be happening," she sobbed. My mate was slipping right into panic mode, and it hurt me t
KIARA I didn't think. I grabbed the woman's arm and pulled her off my mate's body. Denzel stumbled out of bed and hurried into the bathroom with unsteady movements. Grabbing the strange woman by the hair, I kicked her at the back of her legs, bringing her to her knees. She cackled, and I narrowed my eyes at her, bringing my claws to her throat. "Who are you?" I demanded, and she stopped laughing."Can't you tell? I'm you.""What?" I breathed. For a moment, she almost got me to believe her. However, the glint in her eyes reminded me of Ria in an unnerving way. "Stop hiding behind that illusion. Show yourself!" I snapped. "You're no fun," she hissed, transforming into her original form. It was Ria."You bitch," I spat, my claws digging into her skin. Pushing me away from her, she transformed into her signature animal and vanished. The sound of Denzel throwing up in the bathroom made me grimace. When he emerged out of it, his face was as white as sheets. "Care to explain how
KIARA Stepping out into the garden due to my sudden insomnia, I was surprised to find my mate in an odd position with Ria. He had his hand wrapped around her throat, his eyes darkening with menace. "There she is. The star of the occasion," Ria choked out, casting a sidelong glance at me. "Denzel, what's going on?" I asked, and he refused to look at me. "Go ahead, Denzel. Tell her how you hid the fact that Lucas showed up again," Ria stated, and I narrowed my eyes at them."What is she talking about, Denzel? Did Lucas really show up?" I asked, and a muscle ticked in his jaw. He still wouldn't look at me. "Come on, Denzel. Don't keep her waiting. She wants to know about your injury and the fact that Lucas kissed you," Ria said, and I froze.I was appalled by the thought of Denzel hiding all of that from me. But, I felt more hurt knowing that Ria was aware of the things I didn't know."He's such a terrible mate, isn't he? He made you believe that you were his partner amidst all of th
DENZEL "Your majesty, do you realize what you've just said?" Keenan said, stepping away from the door, his eyes squinted at me."I know. It sounds crazy. I don't understand why he did that. The more I think about it, the more I feel disgusted," I said, and he chuckled."Now what? He finds you attractive? Or he wants to get back at Kiara by stealing you from her?" He stated, clearly amused.I scoffed at him, increasing the pressure on my wound. "Maybe he was just messing with you. Maybe he was trying to get a reaction out of you. However, if he's into men, he might be head over heels for you," Keenan continued, and I glared at him. "That's bullshit.""I know, right? This is crazy. Will you tell Kiara about that? No, wait...if you tell her about that, she's bound to find out about your injury," he said."What injury?"We both stiffened as the door opened and Ria walked in. She narrowed her eyes at me. "What happened to you?" She asked, and I shut my eyes, annoyed. "It is none o
DENZEL "There are no signs of injury on his body, your Highness. We suspect that this is a psychological issue," a member of the royal healers said to Kiara, who was perched by my side, holding my hand. I kept my eyes closed. Therefore, no one knew that I'd regained consciousness. "He coughed up blood, you know that. How can it be psychological?" Kiara asked."I'm afraid we do not have the answer to that yet.""You can leave now. I'll stay with him," Kiara said. The moment we were all alone, Kiara kissed my knuckles and stroked my hair. "Will you tell me what happened without lying to me?" She suddenly said, startling me. I opened my eyes to look at her."You knew that I've been awake?" I said, and she nodded. "Please tell me you know exactly what happened to you," she said, and I heaved a sigh, closing my eyes."It was Lucas. He was in my dream, except...it didn't feel like a dream. He stabbed me," I told her, and she stared at me like I'd gone crazy. "Lucas entered your
KIARA A week later, it was confirmed that Estella had indeed taken her own life. She'd left a will behind. Apparently, she had been overcome with a sense of emptiness. Although Estella and I didn't have a solid relationship, I felt bad for her. Denzel was hurt by her decision. He'd done everything to protect her, after all. With the royal family of the northern states down to one member, I had a feeling that it wouldn't be long before Denzel became their king. I knew that my mate was going through a lot. However, I could not comfort him the way I wanted to. Since I had to make sure that Ria believed that my relationship with Denzel was in shambles, I couldn't get affectionate with my mate. Ria was everywhere. She was making it clear that she was there to stake her claims. If I wanted to defeat her, I needed to unlock the fullness of my potential. I stared at the cloudy night sky with mixed feelings. The cool breeze caressed my hair and made me relax. Taking a deep breath, I cl
