KIARA

For the rest of the night, I was unable to sleep. Afraid that I would have another nightmare, a replay of Cassy's death, I stayed awake. I'd tried to convince Denzel to get some sleep. But, he'd refused to let me stay awake alone. I knew more than anyone else how worried he was. I wished I didn't have to make him worry that much. I'd tried to fool myself into believing that everything was fun. It was clear now, I was wrong.

To alleviate my mate's concerns, I had breakfast with him and took my time settling down to have a long soak in a hot bath. When I was done, I slipped on my black robe, tying the sash around my waist absentmindedly.

While I headed back to bed, I stumbled and almost fell.

"There you go again. You're such a klutz."

A shiver ran down my spine at the sound of Cassy's cheery voice. Slowly, I turned around and found her leaning against the wall with her arms folded across her chest. She had an amused smile on her face, her blue eyes shimmering.

KIARA I brought my trembling hands to my ears, trying to drown out the numerous voices clouding my mind. 'Focus on me, love. Only me,' Denzel said to me through our mind link. I took a deep breath, focusing on the sound of his deep voice.'I'm here. You're safe.'I felt him place a hand along the small of my back, pulling me closer to himself. I took a deep breath, his pleasant scent flooding my senses. All of a sudden, every other voice faded. In that moment, I was sucked into my mental space with Denzel. We were standing in the middle of an endless path, and the sky was a canvas of pink, orange, and violet. Growing on either side of the road were numerous cherry blossom trees in full bloom. Littered on the ground were the pink petals of the flowers. Behind me, Denzel embraced me, keeping a hand on my stomach. "Is this place really in my head?" I asked, leaning against his body. "Yes. It's a much stronger barrier since I'm using my full capacity right now," he said, and I no

DENZEL "Your majesty!" At the sound of a guard's voice, I made my way out of the bedroom with Kiara by my side. The guard was trembling by the door. He appeared to be terrified."What is the matter?" I asked, and he lowered his head, his gaze fixed on the ground."Your majesty, rumours of a plague have spread throughout the land. I believe it has reached the northern lands as well," he said."Rumours? Is it merely a made-up story? If it's just a rumour, it can't be true, right?" Kiara asked."Unfortunately, the plague is real. It started spreading yesterday. But, the affected areas have increased. We are not sure about the true nature of the plague. But it is capable of bringing insanity to the people," the guard said. Every muscle in my body tensed up. Were the children of darkness trying to exert their revenge on us? When Kiara's worried gaze met mine, I knew she was thinking of the same thing. "What is your name?" I asked the guard, and he bowed in respect."My name is No

DENZEL "I'll take your silence to mean that you're not sure if Lucas is dead or alive," Estella said, rising to her feet. I watched her as she turned away from me."I'll take my leave now, brother. I have a feeling that the war is far from over. Good luck," she said, and left my study. The moment she was out of my sight, Keenan stepped in. "What was that about? Is it true?" He asked as he approached my desk."She's right. I'm not sure if Lucas is dead or not," I sighed."What happened?""He disappeared right after I gave him a fatal wound. If Lucas is responsible for the plague, he's not done with me," I told him. The door creaked open, and a maid rushed in, her eyes wide."What's going on?" Keenan said, narrowing his eyes at the maid, who had just barged in with a knife in her trembling grip. Her eyes were silvery white. She growled at us and moved towards us with unsteady movements. Before she could get to us, she tripped and fell face-first."Stop right there!" Keenan ord

KIARA Denzel carefully lifted our daughter into his arms, his eyes filled with worry for her. He held her to himself, and suddenly, she stopped crying and writhing. My eyes widened when I noticed that she had fallen asleep. "What was that? What did you do?" I whispered, and he cracked a smile."I did the only thing I could. Comfort her," he responded."How? She has been crying for a while," I said, and he nodded."She won't be in pain for a while."I narrowed his eyes at him. Something felt suspicious. He refused to look at me. It felt as though he was avoiding my gaze. He had to be lying about something."Denzel...""Right. I heard from Ryssa," he blurted out, and my heart sank. He'd definitely just switched topics. "What did she say?" I asked, staring intently at him."Lucas got help from a witch capable of ancient blood magic," he stated. "How is that even possible? It's called ancient blood magic for a reason. That kind of magic is deadly and difficult to control. It has

DENZEL "An old enemy? I'm almost certain that we're talking about Lucas here," Keenan said. We were in my study with Cassy and Kiara. "We still don't know if he's dead or alive," Kiara pointed out. "That might be part of his plan. If he's trying to destroy us all, he'll plan to catch us off guard," Keenan stated. 'Your majesty! It's me, Ryssa,' a familiar voice said to me telepathically. 'Did you find out anything about Lucas' whereabouts?' I asked.'Unfortunately, I still don't know where he is. However, I learned that the plague can only be gotten rid of by the person who created it,' she stated, and I sighed, rubbing my temples.'It's not going to be easy to find her,' I replied.'I'm sorry, your majesty. I wish there was something I could have done to make things easier,' Ryssa said.'You don't have to apologize. You did nothing wrong. You've been a big help,' I told her."Is that Ryssa?" Keenan suddenly asked, and I looked up at him, puzzled."How can you tell?" Kiara a

DENZEL "Trust me, you don't want to say no to me. The plague is only a tiny fraction of the chaos I can bring to your people," she droned, her eyes turning pitch black. In that moment, pain speared through my chest, my lungs straining for. Choking and gasping for air, I doubled over. I felt my eyes begin to bleed, the metallic smell of blood filling the air. "Stop it. Stop whatever you're doing," I hissed through gritted teeth."You didn't realize that we're now in your study, did you?" She said and I froze. That's right; we'd been standing along the hallway a few seconds ago. Who on earth was this strange woman? While I thought about this, the pressure in my chest worsened, and my knees gave out. Crashing to the ground, I clutched at my chest. It was humiliating and frustrating. "How do you feel now? Does all of this finally make you realize how weak and helpless you are?" I heard her say. My airway constricted, and black dots clouded my vision as dizziness slammed into me,

KIARA My hands were unsteady when I carried Azalea in my arms. Her body was ice-cold. Knowing that she could be dead made me go weak in the knees, a sob escaping my lips."She's not dead," Cassy croaked, reaching out to touch my arm. "Why does she look like this?" I choked out, holding my daughter to my chest. She let out a weak sound, her eyes still closed. "Your majesty, there's someone who's here to see you," said Keenan in a monotonous voice. We all turned towards Keenan, who stood by the door with a dazed look in his eyes. "Denzel, we need help. Summon a healer or mage. Do something," I said to my mate, who seemed to have been overcome with so much panic that he was frozen to the spot. "Keenan, the gates have to be opened. The plague is gone now," Denzel said, and his beta blinked."A woman is here to see you. She wants to see Azalea. She can help her," Keenan spoke and I frowned, wondering why he seemed like a puppet on strings. "That will be all, Keenan. Please, ste

DENZEL "Say it. Tell me to get lost. Say it, Denzel! Let me know how messed up you've become," my mate said, her accusing glare pinned with hurt and frustration. A wave of panic washed over me when a tear escaped her eye. This was never my intention. I'd tried to push her away, hoping she wouldn't push any further. "I'm sorry," I said, rising to my feet to reach out for her. With her brows furrowed, she stepped away from me, wiping away the tears on her face."Maybe you're right. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. I trust you, Denzel. It's why it hurts even more. You don't trust me enough to tell me everything that's bothering you," she said, and pain speared through my chest when I heard the quiver in her voice. Moving away from my desk, I grabbed her hand and pulled her into my embrace. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel like you hold no significance to me. I do trust you, my queen. I just...my desire to protect you overrules everything else," I told her, and she h

KIARA "Are you ready?" My mate asked me as I wrapped an arm around his waist and pressed a kiss to his bare back. We were both lying in bed on our first anniversary."I'm excited," I squeaked, and he chuckled. "You're finally getting to imprint on my mind. Of course, you should be excited," he replied, his voice laced with amusement. "Close your eyes. I'm gonna go in now," I whispered, delving into his mind. When I opened my eyes again, we were standing on top of a hill. There was a beautiful, clear waterfall directly opposite us, and there were bright red roses growing along the paths of the wide expanse of the mountains. The sky was a breathtaking pink, and the breeze was refreshingly cool. "Can I open my eyes now?" Denzel asked, and I chuckled, leaning into him from behind. "Yes."He glanced around, whistling under his breath. "Denzel?" I said, and he turned to look at me, his eyes wide with awe. Holding out a hand, I gave him a big smile."Let's go for a walk," I sugge

KIARA A scream tore through the air, and I narrowed my eyes, pulling the door open. Hurrying down the hallway, I reached out for Denzel through our bond. However, I got no response.More screams and cries filled the air, and my stomach churned. I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me what was happening. Lucas was here. The battle had officially begun. Maids scrambled in my direction, their dresses stained with blood. "Azalea," I breathed, worried about my daughter's safety. Just before I could get to the nursery, I saw Cassy running towards me with Azalea in her arms. Her eyes were wide with terror. "He's here. He's killing everyone," she panted. "Take her to the basement. Can you do that for me?" I asked, and she gulped. "Stay safe, Kiara. Please." She croaked. I nodded, patting her back. I watched her continue down the hallway. She suddenly vanished out of sight. Relieved to know that my daughter was in good hands, I crouched by the side of an unconscious guard and grabbed

KIARA Denzel and I sat in our bedroom with Azalea asleep in my arms. My mate had cleaned himself up and was now dressed in his robe. There was a blank expression on his face. It was obvious that we were worried about the fact that Lucas had stolen Ria's power. I still couldn't wrap my head around how he had managed to do that. With Ria's power in his possession, I was the only one who could truly put him down for good. But there was one problem. I was yet to remove the seal. Lucas could attack at any moment. However, we were not ready for him. I still didn't know what Lucas' plan was, and this was unnerving. "Don't worry too much about it," Denzel said to me, his gaze meeting mine. I knew he was trying to comfort me. But, at this point, it was the last thing I needed. I couldn't shake off the feeling that a much bigger war was coming. One which was capable of causing a much bigger catastrophe. If we weren't ready for it, we were bound to get destroyed. "What if he comes her

DENZEL "She was right here in her cot. I was standing by the window, preparing her food. When I turned around, she was gone," Kiara's maid said, her head lowered. We were in the nursery, and Kiara was pacing back and forth. I knew she was barely holding it together. "You didn't hear anybody walk in?" She asked, and the maid shook her head. "No one came in. I would've heard the door open."Kiara gripped several locks of her hair and tugged. I walked up to her, releasing her grip on her hair."Don't hurt yourself," I said, and she looked up at me, her eyes filled with both desperation and anguish."It's all my fault. I shouldn't have left her side. I should have stayed to protect her," she said, her voice trembling. "We will find her," I stated, and she shook her head feverishly."Lucas... what if he's the one who took her? What if he took her to get back at us? What do we do now? This can't be happening," she sobbed. My mate was slipping right into panic mode, and it hurt me t

KIARA I didn't think. I grabbed the woman's arm and pulled her off my mate's body. Denzel stumbled out of bed and hurried into the bathroom with unsteady movements. Grabbing the strange woman by the hair, I kicked her at the back of her legs, bringing her to her knees. She cackled, and I narrowed my eyes at her, bringing my claws to her throat. "Who are you?" I demanded, and she stopped laughing."Can't you tell? I'm you.""What?" I breathed. For a moment, she almost got me to believe her. However, the glint in her eyes reminded me of Ria in an unnerving way. "Stop hiding behind that illusion. Show yourself!" I snapped. "You're no fun," she hissed, transforming into her original form. It was Ria."You bitch," I spat, my claws digging into her skin. Pushing me away from her, she transformed into her signature animal and vanished. The sound of Denzel throwing up in the bathroom made me grimace. When he emerged out of it, his face was as white as sheets. "Care to explain how

KIARA Stepping out into the garden due to my sudden insomnia, I was surprised to find my mate in an odd position with Ria. He had his hand wrapped around her throat, his eyes darkening with menace. "There she is. The star of the occasion," Ria choked out, casting a sidelong glance at me. "Denzel, what's going on?" I asked, and he refused to look at me. "Go ahead, Denzel. Tell her how you hid the fact that Lucas showed up again," Ria stated, and I narrowed my eyes at them."What is she talking about, Denzel? Did Lucas really show up?" I asked, and a muscle ticked in his jaw. He still wouldn't look at me. "Come on, Denzel. Don't keep her waiting. She wants to know about your injury and the fact that Lucas kissed you," Ria said, and I froze.I was appalled by the thought of Denzel hiding all of that from me. But, I felt more hurt knowing that Ria was aware of the things I didn't know."He's such a terrible mate, isn't he? He made you believe that you were his partner amidst all of th

The more I think about it, the more I feel disgusted," I said, and he chuckled."Now what? He finds you attractive? Or he wants to get back at Kiara by stealing you from her?" He stated, clearly amused.I scoffed at him, increasing the pressure on my wound. "Maybe he was just messing with you. Maybe he was trying to get a reaction out of you. However, if he's into men, he might be head over heels for you," Keenan continued, and I glared at him. "That's bullshit.""I know, right? This is crazy. Will you tell Kiara about that? No, wait...if you tell her about that, she's bound to find out about your injury," he said."What injury?"We both stiffened as the door opened and Ria walked in. She narrowed her eyes at me. We suspect that this is a psychological issue," a member of the royal healers said to Kiara, who was perched by my side, holding my hand. I kept my eyes closed. Therefore, no one knew that I'd regained consciousness. "He coughed up blood, you know that. How can it be psychological?" Kiara asked."I'm afraid we do not have the answer to that yet.""You can leave now. I'll stay with him," Kiara said. The moment we were all alone, Kiara kissed my knuckles and stroked my hair. KIARA A week later, it was confirmed that Estella had indeed taken her own life. She'd left a will behind. Apparently, she had been overcome with a sense of emptiness. Although Estella and I didn't have a solid relationship, I felt bad for her. Denzel was hurt by her decision. He'd done everything to protect her, after all. With the royal family of the northern states down to one member, I had a feeling that it wouldn't be long before Denzel became their king. I knew that my mate was going through a lot. However, I could not comfort him the way I wanted to. Since I had to make sure that Ria believed that my relationship with Denzel was in shambles, I couldn't get affectionate with my mate. Ria was everywhere. She was making it clear that she was there to stake her claims. If I wanted to defeat her, I needed to unlock the fullness of my potential. I stared at the cloudy night sky with mixed feelings. The cool breeze caressed my hair and made me relax. Taking a deep breath, I cl
