CHAPTER 75
SANTIAGOWhen my phone rang, I could read interest in Martha's eyes. I glanced at the phone and saw that it was Glenn calling. Martha began to sidle up to me, craning her neck a little in order to see who was calling. I walked a few paces away from her and answered the call."Hello? Santiago?"I frowned. There was a note of worry in Glenn's voice and I wondered if she was still worried or concerned about Martha's earlier attitude. I was about to reply when I noticed Martha looking around, but slowly moving, every step bringing her closer to me."Hang on a sec," I told Glenn.I glared at Martha and walked far away from her, giving her space of a few metres."Glenn? Are you still there?" I asked."Yes.""Okay. Hi. How are you? You sound worried. Is everything okay?""I am worried.""Why? If it's because of what happened earlier, you have nothing to worry about. I will handle-""-It's something else. I received a threat this morning. So, shortly after you dropped me off, I was at work and a text message came in. It was from an unknown number and... check your phone. I just forwarded it to you."I took my phone of my ear, stared at the message that had just been delivered. It read, You Will Regret What you did."I just saw it," I told her. "That is definitely a threat. Did you have an argument or quarrel with anyone? Who on earth could have sent that?""Who else could it be?""Oh. Surely... you don't mean...""Martha. It somehow has to be her.""Oh no. This time, I think you are mistaken. It can't possibly be Martha-""Why the hell can't it be? And why are you so sure that it isn't her?"I sighed. "Please, Glenn. Just calm down. I know you are upset-""-You have no idea how much, and don't tell me to calm down-""-but then you still have to take facts into consideration.""What facts?""The fact that it couldn't have been Martha who sent the threat. I have been with her all day, and I'm pretty sure she isn't the one. Just think, Glenn. Maybe you had a fight with someone recently and you've forgotten-"Glenn laughted bitterly."I can't believe this," she said. "You are actually taking Martha's side on this. I just told you about what happened, and without hesitation, you are defending her.""No. You got it all wrong. I am just trying to help you narrow down the possibilities, so we can actually find out who really sent the threat. I'm on your side here-""It's pretty obvious that you are not. I regret calling you to tell you about this in the first place-""Glenn, listen-""Just forget I said anything about this-""Please-""I will handle the threat issue on my own.Stay with your precious Martha. I mean, what is the use of having a man around... of having you around, when you can't even stand up for me.""Glenn?" I called again, but I was talking to no one. She had hung up on me.I shoved my hand through my hair in frustration. Glenn was really pissed and I didn't know how to fix this.Perhaps I shouldn't have been so vehement in my defense of Martha. But I just been stating what I believed to be facts. I glanced over at Martha who had been watching me curiously while I made the call. I took several deep, calming breaths, tucked the phone in my pocket, and walked over to her."Who was that?" she asked as soon as I was within earshot. "You looked pretty upset when you were talking to... whoever it was."I made no reply. I just stood there, staring at her. I tried to read her expression to see if there was any iota of guilt there, but there was only curiousity, and I was more convinced than ever that Glenn was mistaken. The silence between Martha and I stretched for a while, then she asked,"Why do you keep staring at me like that?""I have a better question for you, Martha. Why the hell did you lie about us being married and about the child?"She pressed a hand against her chest and gasped. "Santiago, I know that some of my past actions might have made you prejudiced against me, but I can't believe that you will think for a moment that I would lie about something as sacred as a child- our child."I scoffed. "Oh please. Stop with the theatrics already. We both know what you are capable of doing. Lies come easily to you, so just tell the truth and be done with it."Martha took a step closer to me and grasped my forearms. I attempted to shake her off, but she held on tightly. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears."Look at me and see that I'm not lying" she said. "I'm telling the truth about the pregnancy. I was pregnant. You have to believe me.""Well, I can't.""Okay. Fine. But then you will have to believe proof, right? I have proof... reports that show that I was actually pregnant."I looked intently at her for a long moment. She did not avert her eyes. I shrugged and stepped away from her. At this point, I didn't know what to believe anymore."Santiago," she sighed. "Please-""Let's drop it. It's time to go back to the hotel."I walked to the car. After a moment, she hurried after me. During the drive to hotel, I kept thinking about Martha's claims and what Glenn had said. When we got to the lobby of the hotel, I noticed a movement out of the corner of my eyes.A burly man dressed in a dark suit, who was sitting and evidently waiting for someone, nodded to his companion who was also dressed in the same fashion. As one, they moved and headed towards us.CHAPTER 76SANTIAGOMartha sidled up to me. When it became clear that the men had been waiting for us, I met them halfway. When I was up close, I could see that there was something dark and secretive about these men. Perhaps it was in the way they moved lithely, like cats, or the way the shorter of the men kept looking this way and that, as though keeping an eye out for trouble."Mr Santiago?" said the taller of the men. He turned slowly to Martha. "Martha?""Yes," I replied. "I am Santiago. She is Martha, and you are...""Agents from the company you are making plans to work with," the man replied."Oh.""There is something very important that the company has to discuss with you."I sighed. This was the last thing I wanted at the moment. The confrontation with Glenn, Martha's claims, and now this! They were all coming so fast on the heels of one another that it was exhausting."I'm sorry, gentlemen, but whatever it is we have to discuss will have to wait." I pointed to the elevator. "
CHAPTER 77GLENNImmediately I got off the call I was having with Santi, I was faced with a scornful look from Ann.Immediately her gaze came to me. It was filled with every emotion that had concern and worry smeared over it. I was still a bit cautious about how to use my word's.A shiver danced across my spine, and before I knew what I was doing my heartbeat let out a sound loud enough, so loud enough that it echoed through the room. She walked toward where I was, covering the rest of the spaces, I didn’t expect as her hands felt warm upon my chin giving me a questioning look."Are you about to cry?"I slapped her hands away. "Of course not."Her face still rested on me not departing—"What?" I rolled my eyes asking."I should be asking that same question."All of a sudden, I could feel that spite that came from deep inside of me. I didn't know who it was directed at but it was there the dark feeling that couldn't be justified in any way. Some part of me was refusing to accept the f
CHAPTER 78SANTIAGOI walked out of the conference room where the meeting was being held, in a rush, and then I halted as I got out to the hallway.I loosened my tie a bit, and squinted my eyes in discomfort and sweat beads popped out on my forehead. I grunted as I opened my eyes widely, and this place seemed like it was upside down and like it was going to fall.I leaned on the wall for support as my eyes became fuzzy and blurry and then my breath was faster. What the hell was just said in the meeting room? That werewolves existed? It wouldn't be possible for such fantasy creatures to exist in the real world. The most unbelievable thing was that Martha and I were asked to work on it. Why did we have to work on something like that? So, if they were actually real, then we are in danger as werewolves are known to be quite dangerous, especially to humans.Soon, the meeting ended, and Martha and I were in the car, driving back home.“So, how do you think we are going to go about this? How
CHAPTER 79GLENNGoosebumps…A clock ticked nearby, I could hear everything as the sound's around me seemed magnified, from the Ice clinking in a tumbler glass not too far away, to the anxiety in the air that left me to a certain distaste. The blurred image of Santiago sitting behind his side of the table flashes across my mind, as I sat still occupying a chair in front of him while he was leaning against the table as he went on and on.Truthfully, I wouldn't say the atmosphere was enjoyable , I had survived in a tense, awkward environment but this seemed so much different.I was pretty sure it was his first time hearing anything about it as he seemed so unsettled—I wasn’t sure how long we’d been right here having the talk but I was getting uncomfortable.“You can’t say they exist, why would they want me to work on something so supernatural.” The words cut the quiet just as my fading gaze found him again.I let out a deep breath, as my jaw ticked. At that moment I could feel every
CHAPTER 80SANTIAGO"Okay, where is it?" Martha asked as soon as I walked into the room."Where is what exactly? I don't understand.""The file, Santiago. I have been searching for it everywhere. I can't find it. That means you must have taken it." When I still continued to stare at her blankly, she stamped her foot in annoyance. "I am talking about the files that were in an envelope. I handed them over to you for a while, remember? Or are you going to deny knowledge of that too?""Oh. I remember the files now. But I dropped it in the car. Didn't you see it there?""Where do you think was the first place I checked? Of course, I went searched the car. It isn't there.""If you are sure that you checked the car, even the pigeon hole properly-""-For Pete's sake! Santiago. I checked, okay? I'm not a moron-""-Then I suggest that you check somewhere else."She waved her hand, calling attention to the state of the room. "What do you think I've been doing. Huh? Before I asked you of it, didn
CHAPTER 81GLENNA deep sigh escaped my lungs and for some reason I appreciated the fact that he was human and standing about fifteen feets away he wouldn't most probably hear it…At another instance I thought he did, he turned to look at me for a while with his gaze settling on me before getting into his car.Was this a sign that he was in on what I had done?My heart wouldn't stop as it echoed from deep within me, soon after I got back into the room I leaned against the door, feeling the toll of the day all at once.It was a silly thing to do right? The event of the day before flashes through my mind, I took advantage of the moment he stepped out to refill his gas to slip the envelope into my bag.I jumped when her hand came down on my shoulder as she jittered me back to reality, I could hear the beeping sound of the oven and the fresh scent of cake thatfilled the kitchen. My heart pounded, and I turned to see the expression she had on her face.“You seemed all stressed up” she s
CHAPTER 82SANTIAGO.I was totally annoyed at the entire situation, looking deep in her eyes I could see the fact that she was lying but why then to my face.Still I couldn't understand why she would. .. The entire situation looked confusing to me even as I drove out of the car park in fury.My heart was pounding heavily from deep within, I slammed my hands against the steering wheel of the rented car In frustration. For a minute, my mind reflected on what had happened the night I picked her up for dinner. She was the first ever person to ride in the car with me since I rented it newly and if the envelope had gone missing that day it was most definitely her. While I knew without conviction that it was seized by her, I had to tell myself it might be wrong as well. There were chances that Martha would have taken it as well.As such I was in a foul mood while parking the car at the garage. I found Martha standing by an Suv as I was alighting, she looked to be having a deep conversation
CHAPTER 83SANTIAGOI dropped the cup on the wooden table, and poured another shot, then drank up. The music that was being played wasn’t helping my mood in any way as I continued to worry about what I had done at Glenn’s place.I sighed heavily, and drank the last shot, then stood up to leave. I only drank half a bottle, so I didn’t feel tipsy or wasted. I couldn’t endure the horrible feeling anymore, so I decided to head for Glenn’s house.I walked out of the pub, and the night breeze howled, and caressed my skin, making me feel a bit relieved, but it wasn’t enough. I got into my car, and started the engine, then drove off to Glenn’s place. It was best to apologize for dashing out of her house angrily. At least, if she was going to forgive me, I would feel much better than drinking to forget the horrible feeling and then remember it after I’m all cleared up.In no time, I got to her house, and parked my car outside. I got out of the car, and exhaled, hoping that things would work ou
