The air in the room feels thin and my vision darkens at the edges. My knees give out, but Leticia and Lady Camille catch me.Bronx jumps up, but Delilah stops him. “Alpha Regent Bronx Andreas Mason, hold your position. We need the energy around the room to remain constant. If you move, it will disrupt the flow.”“Kas, are you okay?” Leticia holds me under the arms, while Lady Camille grips my waist.“Y-yeah. You know how borrowed energy is. It’s not the same as using your own.” I stand and use my cane to support myself. “I’ll be okay.”Pan pulls a pan flute out of his back pocket and blows into it. An intricate song flows through the room, creating vibrations that are almost visible. A blinding white portal replaces the door to the room. I try to look away, but I can’t. Somewhere in the distance, a dog howls. I look at Bronx, but he shakes his head. It wasn’t my imagination. It was a herald of Hecate. Two shadows appear in the portal and step into the room. Their combined energy sends
As the wound heals, Melinoë hisses again. She leaps up, grabbing another blade from her inside her cloak, and lunges at me again with lightning quick speed. This time Bronx intercepts her in mid-air by the throat. He slams her against the wooden wall and snarls, letting his claws dig into her neck. Melinoë squeals and tries to stab him in the neck with the new blade, but it also turns to ash. Her eyes go wide and she tries to claw at him with her talon like nails, but it has no effect on him. “No! Bronx, put her down. She can’t hurt any of us.” I scramble up and grab his arm. “Everyone is here because they want to protect me. She can’t use the blade against me. That includes the people on my side. Let her go, please! Don’t hurt her!” Bronx looks at me, but he contorts his face in anger, making him almost unrecognizable. “You deceived me, Iokaste.” Melinoë’s tone turns sad and desperate now that she realizes she can’t escape. I ignore her and continue to speak directly to Bronx.
I stand up from the sofa and look around. France? How am I going to get home from France? I’m so far from my babies! I need to contact someone. Crap. My cell phone is in my purse. I go to the office door where the landline phone is, but the door is locked. Of course it’s locked. That’s where the safe and electronic equipment are. Bronx doesn’t want anyone messing with it. I need the key. Crap. The key is on my keychain at home with the rest of the keys for this apartment. I lean my head against the door and try to think. If I go outside, people are going to wonder how the Hell I got to Paris when they just saw me a couple hours ago in Montana. “Lex? Are you there?” “I’m here. This is so weird, though.” Lex sounds as confused as I feel. “Why did Hecate send us to Paris? This is safer than home? Wait. What was that?” “I don’t know.” I freeze and listen to quiet footsteps creaking above me. I swallow back the feeling of panic rising in my chest. “Hecate said she was going to find a
“Bronx, is this what you wear to wrestle?” I feign shock and tug on his shirt where it’s tucked into his waistband.“Mmm… you’re right. It’s not.” He grins and takes his shirt off. I lean against the counter and smirk when he unbuttons his pants, but he stops, holding his pants up, and tilts his head to the side. “What you’re wearing isn’t any good for wrestling either, Kas.”“It’s not?” I look down at my dress and giggle. “Yeah… you’re probably right. What do you recommend? You seem like you know what you’re doing.”Bronx rubs his hand over the scruff on his chin. His eyes flash black as Saint tries to take control, but Bronx pushes him back right away.“Let me show you.” Bronx lets his pants fall to the floor and lifts me up from the back of my legs, firmly gripping my ass. He sits me on the cool countertop, sliding his hands up my body and pulling me closer to him at the same time. Feeling him touch my skin makes me arch my back and sigh while Lex purrs. He grins back at me before
“KAAAAAASSSS!!!! HELP ME!! HE’S GONE!! HE’S GOOONNNEEE!!!!” A blood-curdling scream pierces the silence. I bolt up in bed and cover my ears to block out the shriek, but the noise continues as a mindlink. The sun shines brightly in the room, forcing my eyes shut. My head feels like a lead balloon and my stomach churns. I uncover my ears and try to focus through the fog in my brain. Somewhere out in the hallway, the voice is screaming the same words that ring in my head. “Leticia?” Leticia’s wailing sounds excruciating, begging and pleading for me to help her. “Leticia?!” I jump out of bed, but I’m too tangled in the sheets and fall face first to the floor. Bronx catches me an inch from smashing my nose on the light gray carpeting and lifts me back into the bed. “Kas, be careful!” He groans, squinting in the bright room. “What’s wrong?” “Kas, go! She needs you!!” Lex whines, trying to push me to the door. “Leticia! Leticia needs me!” I untangle the sheet and scramble off the bed.
“Kas! Is it true? Les will be here tomorrow?” I turn around and see Sun charging at Maya and me. I brace myself to protect Maya from getting squished by our sister’s powerful hug. “You know what that means, right?” “Hi darling. I-I think it means Hephaestus will be here.” “Well, that but also-“ “Kas!” Lena squeals and rushes up behind Sun, joining in on the group hug. “Why are you crying?” “Oh, sorry. Maya and Dre had to get their vaccinations.” I wipe tears away and try to smile. “Maya growled at the nurse and they both cried from the shots. It made me cry too.” I feel my lip tremble just thinking about their sweet little faces when they felt the needles. Lena looks at Maya lovingly and takes her from me. “I’ll help her feel better.” She gives Maya a kiss on the forehead, letting her silver healing energy move to Maya. I breathe a sigh of relief when I feel Maya’s tension relax and she coos at Lena. “Thank you, Lena. Is everyone in the conference room? I have about half an ho
“Oh, eyes just like your daddy!” Bronx’s mom Sandy gives Dre a fat kiss on the cheek and nuzzles him. “Kas, we’re so proud of you, sweetie. I know it was a rocky start, but you have done a great job with these two so far.” “Thank you, Sandy.” I look past her and watch Bronx’s dad, Michael, making wolf faces at Maya. “I take it she looks like you did when you were little?” He looks up with a huge smile on his face. “Oh yeah. There are no pictures to compare, but same color eyes and mousey brown hair. It’s amazing to think one day those eyes will turn red and her hair dark brown, huh?” “We’re so sorry we didn’t come sooner, Kas.” Sandy rocks Dre in her arms. “After what happened with Lenora, we took some time to live in wolf form and we were just so disconnected from everything. We didn’t even know you were back until we got to Prague last week. Bronx explained it was an accident. So, if he forgives you, we do too.” “It’s okay, Sandy.” I consider how to answer her. “I’m just glad y
Another knock at the door interrupts Lady Camille and Delilah while they explain the complexities of suppressing the dark magic. Bronx excuses himself and answers the door. We all stop and turn when he bursts out laughing in the doorway.“Codi girl, what are you wearing?” Bronx laughs harder when he raises her high in the air. “Uncle Bonx! Codi a weretiger like Swagga!” She is wearing a winter beanie hat, orange with black stripes and cat ears sewn on top. Her shirt is neon green with a jack-o’-lantern face and her leggings are hot pink. I chuckle at the ballet slippers that finish her chaotic look.“Leticia bought her the hat.” Klay stands quietly in the doorway with his hands clasped in front of him and watches them. “Beta Milo had to take care of a few security matters for tomorrow’s ceremony. He asked me to escort Miss Codi to visit her cousins before it’s time for the nanny to put her down for bedtime.”“Thank you, Klay. Please come in.” Bronx steps to the side and closes the do
