My heart completely sank. Somehow, Mattia always manages to put me in an awkward position. What's with his sudden presence? He even witnessed my fight with my stepmother.

From the table in the overseer's tent, I watched the workers tilling new land for my vineyard. Some of them were also lifting wine barrels into the warehouse. We have built a new warehouse for that.

"What are you thinking about? Let me guess, thinking about your mother's problems or Mattia, who came without being invited yesterday?" Agnes interrupted my reverie. She sat next to me, munching on her potato chips.

My chest rumbled as I imagined what had happened yesterday. I have to admit, Mattia was very brave, fending off my stepmother's slap. But that's not the point. Why did she come? I'm sure the reasons she told me at that time weren't true.

"Harper? I asked you, and I felt ignored. That was damn good."

"Agnes, I can't think about anything at the moment. I mean, my mind is half confused," I said honestly.
