Who else would beg to have Hunter's attention?
Scarlett's pov. What in hell am I doing right now? I try to move and am restricted yet again because the huge arm around my waist won't let me. Alpha Roman has me in his hold, and I'm embarrassed at how much I like it. Hells, why am I acting this way? I'm supposed to be freaking out right now, trying to push him away in fear and screaming at him to leave me alone. Hunter has wounded a part of my spirit and that wound is still pink and raw, but the man whose body I'm resting on isn't Hunter, and my spirit seems to be fully aware of that. But still, this isn't appropriate. I clear my throat and try again. "I'm fine now, Alpha Roman. I promise. My chest doesn't hurt anymore and I can breathe properly." I don't get any response but I'm dead sure he heard me. "Alpha Roman?" No response. "Alpha Roman?" Cold fear rushes through me this time and I gulp. Is he dead? "Roman?" "I can hear you very well Scarlett, and I'm glad we're now on a first-name basis. Is there anything you wa
My hands are shaking and Maya is still crying. I have her cradled against me and I can't think straight."Maya, tell mummy what's wrong?"She doesn't say anything. She just goes on crying and I let her because sometimes that's what we need to do. Something has hurt her.Something or someone. My mind flies to several possible suspects but I turn up with nothing. Alpha Roman's beta came to pick her up specially this morning and I followed them to the auditorium. The teacher is a slightly aged lady and her male counterpart assists her. Fen assured me that they only teach them the basics for now.Things like how to maintain a proper stance.Basic muscle training like sprinting, and climbing, just basic stuff. Maya was the first to get there this morning and it isn't even three hours yet but she's back like this."Maya, did anyone hurt you?"Maya calms down but only slightly so she can nod her head.Fury seeps into my bones and I smoothen her hair softly."Was it one of the trainers there?
Roman's pov.She hesitated.I look at the time on my watch and try to get that moment out of my head, but I can't.I asked her if she trusted me and she hesitated for a split second before sighing and giving a nod. There's nothing I can use to describe how that made me feel. It made me feel like a liar and a fool.Well, of course she wouldn't trust me right away. I'm the Alpha that has growled at her every time he met her and who almost couldn't control himself today.I loosen the tie around my neck and try to breathe better. It's hard being around Scarlett, even harder being alone with her.A series of knocks come from my door and my head whips to the sound immediately."Come in."My father's personal assistant opens the door and steps in not a second later. She walks over to my table briskly before dropping the file she has in her hands."There are the reports you asked for, Alpha Roman. Your father requires a few days off to rest and has asked that you should be informed of this hi
I move my head to the side as I roll on the bed and scrunch up an eyebrow. Maya was bone-deep exhausted when she came back, and according to her she had been lied to and wronged by Roman. His Beta had put her through even more training when she went out to the gardens and while she liked it, she didn't like being lied to. I chuckle as that thought runs through my head and I try to slowly extricate the hand she has in her hold. The Alpha Conference is something I know of. It is held every three years, and as Roman said it is a gathering of all the Alphas in the state. It's much larger than that though. I've heard Hunter having council meetings about this Conference, planning year on end for it. The Alpha Conference might be why he's so horrible to me, but that's a matter for another day. I slip out of bed and get myself ready. Alpha Roman of the Ironclaw pack is a man who loves his pack. Even if I couldn't tell that from the rumors I have heard of him, I can tell from the way he s
"Follow them." Fen nods and motions to the warriors hiding in the treescape. I feel the magic that hums in the air as they transform. My warriors turn back to give me one last look, and I let my eyes glow as Fenrir comes to the surface to encourage his fellow warriors. Fenrir is a leader, a commander among wolves, and he's got guts of steel. He's made that more than evident today. Fen and six warriors take off in their wolf form and I punch the nearest tree as I grit my teeth. The sound of deep cracking comes next and with a groan the tree collapses. I take a deep breath and start pacing. Calm down, Roman. You can do this. Yes... you might have just sent your second mate off into lethal danger, literally risking her life because she wanted to make up for forgetting a car, something that might have been your fault since you didn't let her breathe for two minutes without making her nervous! But you can do this. You can. Fuck, what the hell am I doing! I need to go after them.
"Can you see me, Scarlett?"I turn and giggle because I can't. Hunter has plunged me into darkness with the blindfold and his voice is the only thing leading me to him."Come Scarlett."That voice has changed.I burst out of sleep with a start and take in my surroundings. The room is dark. Pitch black and illuminated only by the shimmer of the moon coming in through the windows. This is not my room. Maya's not here, but I recognize these surroundings. This is Alpha Roman's room.At the mention of his name, my memories start flowing back like a stream.I asked to be the one who drove the car.Our talk about the Alpha Conference and how he plans to use it in getting me free of Hunter made me feel excited. It was a genius-level plan.Simple yet complicated, and one of those complications was concealing my identity from Hunter for the next two months until the Alpha Conference. The car came back to me immediately. If Hunter could place trackers on my boots then he could do the same thing
It's breakfast time in the Ironclaw pack and we're seated at a table. "Here in the Ironclaw pack, we eat meat more than anything else." I roll my eyes so heavily I think they'd roll out of their sockets. That is such a typical werewolf thing to do, and the last thing I assumed about this pack was that it was typical. '"You're boring my mother half to death." Eyes snap to us from other tables and my eyes widen while I struggle to keep a smile from creeping onto my face. I fake a gasp. "Maya, oh my gosh, that's so rude of you. Bad Maya, bad girl." Maya rolls her eyes and I almost lose it. I drop my fork on the floor and duck underneath the table so I can laugh. I want to laugh so bad. Unfortunately, we're in a room of werewolves and this is another pack. Observation before action, that's my tactic. And where is Maya getting all this sass from? "Are you alright under there Scarlett?" I come back up with a nod and sit down, taking a deep breath. "I'm sorry for my daughter's beha
"I think I like this new school." I blink and let out the breath I didn't know I was holding in. "No kidding." The school is huge. "Should we go in, Miss?" The driver, obviously unhappy that he's been assigned the task of driving us, is speaking in a clipped pissed-off tone. Maya is looking out the window as the car comes to a stop in front of the school gates, and I can tell she's also impressed. The car windows aren't tinted, instead, they're crystal clear so we can see exactly what the Ironclaw preparatory school looks like. The fences are not normal. I watch as one child, a small male who shouldn't be too older than Maya, breaks out into a run and hits the fence with a leap. His hands and feet find hostage in the crevices constructed into it and almost like this has become routine, he climbs the fence, disappearing off to the other side. He's not the only one doing that. Other young pups are doing this exact same thing and even when they fall, I see them get up and clim
