Sometime later in the night, once she had put Atharv to bed after reading his favourite story, Chandni finally managed to sit with Vikram and explain what happened at Synergy Inc. that morning.
She tried very hard not to sound accusatory but she couldn't stop herself from asking.
"Did you...Did you know that Aryan was part of this company before? " Her face was full of anguish.
Vikram looked at her sharply.
Chandni became flustered. “How stupid of me? I know you would have never sent me there if you knew.... It's just that..."
Vikram cut her short.
"Chandni, thanks for your confidence in me, But I am really sorry for all the hurt and anguish you had to go through today. Was he rude to you or misbehaved with you?" There was a hint of anger in Vikram's eyes. His keen gaze was locked on her face, as if he wanted to observe every subtle reaction on it.
"He tried to be rude initially, but I gave it back to him fair and square." Chandni hissed.
Vikram's face relaxed and he laughed gently.
"That's my girl. I am so proud of you."
Chandni smiled back at him.
"I bombarded him with every question I could think of about their products, but he answered them all faithfully." She paused, and looked down at her hands, as she played with her wedding ring, out of habit.
"But then I caught him crying in the car." Chandni blurted out, as if talking to herself.
Vikram's sharp intake of breath brought her back to her senses.
"It... It was an accident." She gulped nervously.
"He has got exactly same car as mine, I never expected him to still remember our stupid...... Anyway, I was in a rush, and I mistakenly went and sat inside his car and there he was... crying. I was stunned, didn't know what to do. But then he began to blame me and my family for torturing or punishing him. As if..." Chandni's face slowly turned red with suppressed anger and hurt.
Vikram could understand that meeting Aryan after so long, invoked some bitter sweet memories in Chandni, but he wasn't keen to know about any of those. Much as his heart went out to her, he decided that it was better to make her see the bigger picture, instead of just offering his sympathy and support.
"Chandni, I have been asking you to take more active part in looking after the family business for a long time now, but you kept putting it off, as you said you were not ready. And I understood your point of view, because Atharv was still very young and he needed mother's care more than anything. I completely respected your decision. When you were finally ready, I gave you a choice between the two companies we bought around the same time, Synergy and Mohit Enterprises. And you chose Synergy because you were more interested in the kind of niche products they were making."
Chandni nodded her head slowly, as she tried to compose herself.
"I can easily arrange for you to go to Mohit enterprises, but there's already an existing CEO there, who was chosen after an extensive talent hunt. But that's the least part of the problem. If you run away from your job, wouldn't Aryan think you are the guilty party here, and take it as a moral victory for him?" Vikram's baritone voice echoed in that silent room.
Chandni looked away, unable to face his piercing gaze. She knew that every word Vikram spoke was nothing but simple truth, but still...
"I would be insulting you by asking questions like, do you still have any tender feelings towards Aryan etc. because I know you don't. And how do I know this? You assured me long time ago that he had no place in your heart and I completely trust you. I don't understand what is the problem here? He is just another employee for you, to take care of in the company. Actually, I am wrong. He is not just an employee there but he is also kind of a Protégé of the previous owner and is a shareholder in the company. So, we can't sack him either. I can totally understand that, initially there will be a lot of awkwardness and the whole scenario probably be even painful. But even if you are not working there, there might be times you might meet him. Like when I invite them over to our home for any meetings or I take you along for any major events there.
As you know, I am planning to invite employees of both the new companies for the upcoming housewarming party. I know it would be less torturous than seeing him daily at work, but it is entirely up to you how you want to deal with this. And whatever your decision is, I will support you completely." Vikram assured her.
Chandni couldn't help but thank her husband inwardly, as his complete trust in her and the respect he had for her decisions soothed her nervous heart, and even emboldened her self-belief.
"Let me sleep on it and I will tell you my decision tomorrow." She finally declared after a long pause.
"Great! Take as much time as you need." He sighed in relief. He knew that once Chandni gets over the initial indecisiveness, she can be as tough as necessary.
"By the way, you still haven't told me what such an urgent business was, that you had to go away so suddenly?" She asked him accusingly.
"Now it is your turn to take leap of faith and trust me whenever I go away on these trips. I don't have a hidden wife or girlfriend." He mocked at her.
"Ha-ha!! very funny!!" She rolled her eyes at him.
"That's why I always say. We husbands can never win. You don't trust us whether we tell the truth or lies. I give up." He raised his hands in mock surrender and started making himself a drink.
"Listen! Please don't drink too much. Have you taken your medicines?" She asked him, her eyes full of concern.
"Yes Chandni, I got so used to your punctual reminders that I take them the first thing, right after dinner. But why don't you go and sleep now? You must have had a hectic day, travelling all the way to the office in the heavy traffic. I am afraid, this is something you have to get used to. I still have some files to sign that Pramod gave me." He pointed at the bundle of documents on his desk with a sad face.
"Yes, I am feeling rather tired. But please don't stay up too late. You too have travelled a lot today, remember? Good night." She turned to look at him one last time, before retiring to bed.
Vikram sat down and drew the bundle of files towards him with a heavy sigh. He pulled out the drawer, took some capsules and gulped them down as he began to read the first file.

Aryan did not know how long he sat there on the floor of his bedroom, the opened and rummaged boxes and contents lying around him, with Chandni's wedding card on top of the pile.
It should have been their wedding card, their supposed happily ever after. He still remembered the day he proposed to Chandni as if it was yesterday.

"Why do we have to marry so suddenly Aryan? I just turned 18, we have so much time ahead of us. I have to speak to my parents and get their blessings too remember? I was just, you know.... kidding about the car. Forget about it. We both can buy it on our own or I can withdraw from my savings. There's a lot of time for all that. Generally, it's us girls who hurry boys into tying the knot. Yahan to Ulta ho raha hai! Chakkar Kya hai? (it is opposite here, what's going on?)" Chandni chuckled softly, and rubbed her nose against his.
"Nothing is going on. You know I am a penniless Engineer right now, but I have got placement offers from my University in couple of Companies. There's a small company called Synergy, back in Mumbai, where I am really interested to start my career. But instead of pursuing my career, I came here and fell in love with you. I live with my Nani in Mumbai, so we have a roof over our head. But still, your parents will never agree for our marriage right now, because they want their only daughter to go to a rich household similar to theirs. I still have to find my mark in the world, get a job, and settle down blah blah... It might take 6 or 7 years. Why do we have to wait so long to be together? And there's something else too... I will come to that later. Your parents will not give their approval, trust me Chandni. I will get a job and do all that but I want you to be with me in my struggles too. Or you are saying no, because you can't adjust to my middle-class way of living?" Aryan asked, his face crestfallen, as if he suddenly realised where the problem was.
"Shut up Aryan!! Don't you dare insult me like that ever! When did I ever make you feel that I am a rich family kid who can only live in a certain way of life? We never had much money when I was younger, and this recent growth in our wealth never meant anything to me. My tastes and my way of living have always been simple. Why don't you trust me when I say that I love you and want to marry you no matter what your status is?" Chandni looked hurtful, and walked away from him in the deserted lane.
"Chandni!! Stop! Of course, I trust you. My only worry is, do you trust me? If you do, then why are you hesitating to marry me?" Aryan ran and stood in front of her, effectively blocking her.
Chandni shook her head, and tried to explain again but Aryan stopped her.
"Who knows what is in store for us tomorrow? I have had a rough time growing up, but it never turned me bitter. Instead, I have learnt to live in the present, savour every day, every moment as if there is no tomorrow; and if you are with me, every moment of our life will be a memorable one." He cupped her face in his hands as his eyes searched eagerly for a response.
A slow and shy smile spread on Chandni's face, as the warm street lights cast a mystic glow on her face.
"I trust you completely Aryan! Why would I come here with you all alone if I didn't? It doesn't matter how we live, where we live, today - tomorrow or after ten years, I will always be with you, as your wife, as your life partner, sharing every moment of my life with you, no matter what! No one can separate us."
Her declaration in that deserted lane sounded like music to his ears.Aryan's heart leapt with joy.He lifted and twirled her around, till she screamed and begged to be put back on the ground. He stopped twirling and slid her down, gradually, his arms still locked tightly around her back, his eyes boring into hers. They could hear nothing but the chirping of the crickets and buzz of the traffic from far away.
It was as if the whole world around them disappeared and at that moment, they felt as if they were tied together in the bond of love, togetherness, forever.
Aryan left a trail of feathery kisses along Chandni’s cheeks and forehead before reaching her lips. And waited… till Chandni opened her half-closed eyes and looked at him with a mixture of shyness and anticipation.
As his warm mouth touched her soft lips, an inevitable moan escaped from her and he pulled her closer.

Aryan's phone began to beep its 11pm alarm which brought him out of his memories. Hmm… so much for empty words, Aryan thought bitterly, as he recalled Chandni's promise to stay with him forever no matter what!

On the other hand Aryan continues to be tormented by his memories of Chandni. Did they get married as they planned to?

Aryan checked his phone and noticed that there were several missed calls and worried texts from Namrata and few from Raj Singh as well. He texted Namrata, reassuring her that he was fine, and then began to call Raj Singh. But he didn’t have to, as the man himself was at his door ringing the bell at that very moment. "Why don't you answer your bloody phone? I was worried sick after Namrata told me you stormed out of office, looking distressed. What happened?" Raj Singh looked worriedly at Aryan. "Nothing happened, please come and have a seat first.” Aryan let Raj Singh inside. “When did you arrive? Would you like to have your favourite Adrak Wali Chai (Ginger tea)?" Aryan tried to look cheerful, in vain. "I will sit if you sit next to me, and tell me what the hell happened. Don't even try to bluff because you suck at telling lies." Raj Singh mocked. Aryan smiled ruefully and went inside, to bring the wedding card he was checking o
Vikram on the other side of the call had just finished a sumptuous breakfast cooked by Chandni. She was sitting next to him at the breakfast table, trying in vain to make Atharv finish his breakfast, listening patiently to him, while he talked nineteen to dozen. He kissed Atharv affectionately on his head before grabbing his coffee, and went back into his study. Vikram was feeling more relaxed now, after Chandni confirmed to him in the morning that she was happy to continue as Acting CEO of Synergy Inc. He knew that the steely grit on her face belied her internal fears and turmoils, but he was proud of her resolve to overcome those, for the greater benefit of the family business. Vikram Mathur was not the type of guy who would let grass grow under his feet. Now that he was sure of his wife's decision, he immediately put his action plan into motion. An action plan to make sure that his wife's tenure as acting CEO at Synergy Inc goes without a hitch and will result in
Aryan's eyes turned blood red as he tried to control his emotions, and maintain a calm profile in front of Vikram. He sincerely didn't know how to react. He was lost in his own turmoil. Should he be happy that Chandni found such an understanding husband who didn't let her past affect their current relationship, or should he feel even worse, to know that Chandni had no qualms to put all their precious memories behind her, to start a happy life with Vikram!! Frankly speaking, he didn't give a damn what Vikram thought of him. His equation was with Chandni and no one else. And his life was already ruined because of her. He had no intention to seek redemption for his past, or good impression from Vikram who was no way involved in what happened between him and Chandni.... Aryan couldn't help but smile to himself as he wondered what a fool he was, to fall in love with such a woman, who has effectively fooled and managed to sway, not just one, but three men with her
There was a resigned silence in the room and Aryan felt compelled to look at Vikram. "What I am saying might sound harsh to you, but it's perfectly valid to me Mr Mathur." He felt compelled to add the explanation. "I understand, as you say I am nothing but the third person in that context. And I would never impose myself on anyone in this matter. As I said, it is entirely up to you." Vikram reiterated. Aryan still looked very much uncomfortable and ready to bolt out of the room at the first given opportunity. Vikram chose to calm the fears of the protective and anguish ridden Raj Singh first. "Raj Ji I totally understand how difficult this must be for you too. When I asked my wife to become the Acting CEO of this company, I had not foreseen what just happened. And since I created this mess, I thought I must be the one to fix it as well, and straight away arranged this meeting between us. In fact, Chandni doesn't even know t
Chandni's POV As the lift doors closed slowly, my heart rate doubled up at the sight beholding me. I was sure my face looked as flushed and red as Aryan's, but for a completely different reason. Against my best instincts, I chose to dress in a saree today, as I thought it will give me a more mature and authoritative look. But now I realised it was a giant mistake. It somehow made me feel more feminine, soft and vulnerable, or was it just Aryan's presence and his gaze that made me feel so? I wasn't sure. My hands scrunched on my Saree Pallu, a habit I had from young, which didn't seem to escape Aryan's scrutiny either. I slowly released
I made sure I didn't go anywhere near Aryan all morning afterwards, as I busied myself in studying about Nanda and Associates, and checking out the business profile of Giridhar Nanda, its owner. I also held another meeting with Namrata and the HR team to discuss new training programs for interns. I loved my cabin, it was small but tastefully decorated and it gave me that much needed personal space, before I could fully mingle with all the employees of Synergy. Around 11.30 am, I heard a knock on the door and there was Aryan, dressed in impeccable formal clothes of crisp white shirt and black trousers, with the jacket hanging loosely on his arm. I scrunch my eyes and looked away. "What happened now? Am I still not dressed properly enough for you?" He asked me crossly.
That heartbreaking moment, When you can't express your feelings to the one you truly love, But you are screaming inside for them to save you from your misery.... Aryan's POV I wasn't even sure where my feet were taking as I walked blindly away from Chandni, the anguish in my heart so ready to burst, that it was threatening to spill through my eyes. Some guy, who probably was as absent minded as me, looking down at his mobile collided with me as he came out of the lift, but I ignored everything and everyone and walked off briskly. I climbed two stairs up and finally reached the terrace. Everywhere around me were more concrete filled buildings, some s
"Erm.. I was actually going to apologise for my outburst earlier, before that guy knocked us off" I began awkwardly. "If we keep recalling every bad memory we had, we would probably spend the rest of my time here apologising to each other." Chandni's voice was full of irony. Just then her phone buzzed, and she scrunched up her face looking at it. "How come you have reached here so soon Chacha?" she asked as soon as she answered the call. I could hear loud giggles and a childish voice on the phone in the silence of our room, even at such a distance. I was feeling awkward listening to the one-sided phone conversation and tried to get up from the sofa, but she hurried towards the sofa and sat next to me, signalling to me to
For the first time the confident smile on Dev's face faltered. "Hmm Yes I think so Mrs. Bharadwaj. But if there is anything he does that you don't like, and you are too shy to tell him directly, maybe I can help you?" He looked hopefully at her. The waiter hovered around them, hoping they would order. "It's your choice!!" Dev handed over the menu to her. Chandni didn't bother to open it. She looked sweetly at the waiter and asked, "What are your signature dishes for entrees and mains here?" The waiter went through a long list of delectable dishes, which as per his recommendation were most sought after. Chandni randomly picked a few and asked them to be served as quickly as p
"Everything is about you is it? What you want to do, what you don't want to do? What If I am not in the mood to talk right now? What if I am finding my husband too..."? She didn't finish her sentence and Dev grabbed her waist and pulled her towards him. "Your command is my wish... my majesty." He smiled in relief. "This is what I want sweetheart!! That you tell me everything openly. I didn't tell you how you look in this dress because I was afraid I will get too carried away even without...forget it!! When I saw this dress in a catalogue, I knew you would look damn good in this, but when the time comes, I was hoping I could do this too...." His ran his fingers lazily in a feathery touch along her open back, making her shudder involuntarily and wrap her arms around him. She nuzzled his neck, kissing him slowly al
It was almost Seven pm and Dev had booked their dinner at Eight. Chandni opened the suitcase that Dev brought along with him, which was supposed to have all her clothes that she packed in Mumbai. But to her horror, it was practically empty except for some new underwear and casual clothes. As she made a thorough search to see if any of her clothes were in other suitcases, She recalled all the events of the afternoon After dumping their luggage at the hotel, they had a leisurely lunch, and strolled around the streets of shopping markets. Dev insisted on going back to the same shop where she bought the shorts she wore to the airport, and buy every combination of shorts and casual tops there, as he said "it made you look like a local and the 18-year-old I married." But Chandni suspected otherwise, the way his hungry
A war-like atmosphere had descended upon the marble island counter in the kitchen, which also served as Dining table in the Bharadwaj household. "I want to come to Goa too.. I have never been there! Mummy! Mummy!! Tell Daddy I want to come too.. I don't want to go and stay with Miku Chacha!! I am not going to eat this breakfast anymore till you agree to take me along." Atharv crossed his arms and looked at his parents furiously, after making sure that he finished all but a few spoons of the huge second serve of his favorite Kheer! "Hey Buddy!! Why are you saying you don't want to come and stay with me? I am hurt... deeply hurt! We are friends, remember!! Goa is seriously boring! All you do is sit in front of the beach and stare at waves! And trust me, there too your Mum and Dad would be telling you don't do this, don't do that.... But you and me, we are going
A few months later. -------------------------- "Atharv... tell your mummy to hurry up otherwise we both are going to the function without her!" Aryan said in irritation, as he looked at his watch for the umpteenth time. "Daddy you can tell her whatever you want in person, because she is right behind you. Haha" Atharv pointed to his father with a jerk of his head, and went back to playing the video game on his phone. "Don't you start anything now!! As it is, I am in such a bad mood for spending so much time wearing this saree." Chandni didn't even let her husband open his mouth. Aryan groaned loudly. "Well, who asked you to wear this? And if you knew
A flushed and pained Vikram slowly made his way out of the washroom towards his bed and sat down exhausted. He should have gone to the living room and joined others at Breakfast but he felt totally drained. Maybe he could rest for a few more moments. He sat upright against the propped up soft pillows on the head board and took some deep breaths. Just then he heard soft footsteps followed by a knock and his face broke into a smile. "Come in!" Chandni and Aryan entered with breakfast tray. "Aaah!! Mr. and Mrs. Bharadwaj! And with breakfast for me! I should thank my lucky stars huh!!" He cheered them jovially. Chandni gave the juice to Vikram with a smile and sat next to him on the bed. Vikram scooted over and tapped on the other side of the bed, inviting Ar
Her heart rejoiced at the thought itself, even though she was still depressed thinking about her Didi and the drastic step she took. Committing suicide is such a stupid cowardly thing. It is not a solution to any problem. In fact, you leave so much trauma and grief for all the people you leave behind, who loved you all your life, and they get sometimes permanently scarred from it. Vikram ji had been through so much trauma after Didi died. If only she knew how much he loved her!! He went out of the way to help everyone from his wife's family and fulfilled the last wish of his wife. She and everyone in the family was sure that if only Didi had reached out to her Daddy, Vikram would have been so happy to meet them all in normal circumstances, and they would have been one big happy family! Now she understood the meaning behind each and every word Vikram ji said to her at the top of that hill cliff after he saved her..... Her thoughts wandered to that fate
"Chandni, after I saw your father at Renu's Anniversary, I went through her things and found this letter addressed to me. And everything that I did afterwards was because of this. Please read it, it is nothing personal. And I have read it so many times that I know the contents of that letter by heart now." Chandni took the letter with trembling hands and began to read. ============================ Hi Vikram, By the time you read this letter, I am probably gone from your life, and this world. I know what I am going to do is a cowardly act, and something I will just add to the list of regrets that I now have in my life. I wish I was as brave as my mother who loved my father wholeheartedly and fought a
"I know Sanjayji, what wonders women can do, to turn our family life into a bliss. But I also knew what kind of people my relatives were, Renu didn't!” Vikram rubbed his eyes and sighed. “ They would pass snide remarks about her to my father and other relatives or bring up the topic of her family just to unsettle her. Her nervousness only made things worse, as it made all of us suspect that she was hiding something from us. She began to have trouble sleeping and I took her to the doctors who ordered her to do some lifestyle changes, exercises and also prescribed some sleeping pills, but requested her to use them as a last resort. She became fidgety and moody as time went on. I asked her plainly one day, was there anything I needed to know? She flatly denied that she was hiding anything from me but was hurt that I am not trusting her word. She accused me that I was trying to spy on her, which made me
