Chapter 4 She Liked It

"Do you have something against rich people?" Cedric was smiling as he fiddled with his teacup. His devilish features were mesmerizing under the light.

Faye almost fell under his spell but she managed to snap out of it. She shook her head and collected her senses.

She looked at him seriously. "I don't know anything about your past, but we are married now. I hope you will be humble and hardworking, even if it isn't in your nature to behave so. Your wealth doesn't matter to me. If you work hard and keep striving, your situation will improve."

Faye continued, "I don't expect you to provide for me lavishly, but I need you to be a decent person. Do you get what I'm saying? It's all mentioned in our agreement anyway. If you ever do something extreme for money again, we'll get a divorce right away."

He looked at her with confusion. Again?

He was completely unaware of any supposed extreme act he had committed, especially not for money.

Thankfully, she didn't leave him in the dark for long. "Tell me, how much money were you paid for what you did last night?"

"What are you talking about?" He couldn't continue playing dumb anymore. The situation had gone beyond just a simple misunderstanding. He felt his dignity being attacked and slandered.

"How much did they pay you to sleep with me?" she asked directly.

Realization struck him. Faye had been set up last night. That explained why she had behaved so impulsively with him.

Cedric's expression softened. "I didn't receive any payment. Last night was truly an accident."

"You didn't? Then why were you in that room?" Faye's brows furrowed tightly. She didn't believe him. She was already considering the quickest way to divorce him if he turned out to be an asshole. She wanted to cut off all ties with him.

He chuckled and motioned for her to come closer.

As soon as she did, he showed her a video. It was the hotel surveillance footage that she had failed to obtain.

She gave him an odd look. She realized he was the reason why she couldn't access the footage despite hacking into the hotel's system.

After watching the video, she was dumbfounded. She was shocked to learn that she had entered the wrong room last night.

The room number Anthon had given her was 33, but she had mistakenly entered Room 35.

She had suspected being drugged as she wasn't feeling well, but she couldn't remember when it might have happened.

Now that she had reviewed the surveillance footage, she was certain she had been drugged.

Otherwise, why would she be struggling for breath at the hotel? Why would she be tugging at her clothes?

She was sure she didn't get drugged at the hotel. It seemed likely that it had happened in the car Anthon had sent to pick her up.

Her face turned red. She downed the drink on the table.

"You are a waiter. Why were you staying at the hotel? What a waste of money!" Faye exclaimed.

She returned to her seat and noticed him looking at her oddly. It was then that she realized she had just drunk from his cup.

Faye felt embarrassed and started coughing. At that moment, she wished she could find a hole to hide in.

Fortunately, the restaurant staff promptly served their dishes. Faye started on the beef Wellington to distract herself from the awkward situation.

"If I hadn't stayed at the hotel last night, you might be marrying someone else today," Cedric said this slowly. He had a thoughtful look in his eyes. "Could this be fate?"

Faye was taken aback and didn't know how to respond. She looked at him, but his graceful and poised movements stunned her.

"Cedric, are you related to the Shaws? The most affluent family in Jeorgia?" Faye asked.

He looked at her amusedly and asked, "What makes you say that?"

"Are you suggesting you picked up such refined table manners from those rich tycoons at the hotel instead?"

Since it was their first meal together, it wasn't surprising for him to behave politely. "Just relax and eat. There's no need to be nervous. We're a family now," she reassured him.

Cedric's exasperation was apparent on his handsome face. He looked like he was dealing with a spoiled and slow-witted child. He didn't deny being a member of the elite Shaws. Could he have married an idiot?

Faye was completely engrossed in the delicious food. She didn't notice the concerned look on Cedric's face.

After enjoying their meal, Faye slowly made her way down the stairs. Unexpectedly, they ran into Anthon and Tracy again at the entrance.

"Faye." Tracy walked up to them while holding Anthon's hand. She handed an invitation to Faye.

"Our engagement date has been set. It's ten days from now. You must come and give me your blessings," Tracy said bashfully. "You're the first person I'm sharing this happy news with …"

Faye looked at the invitation in Tracy's hand and smiled.

"We're family, Tracy. You don't have to waste an invitation on me. After all …" Faye looked at Anthon before continuing, "Mr. Lynch Junior promised to give me ten million dollars as a wedding gift back then. But, considering Lynch Group's current financial situation, you should save up wherever possible."

"What? Ten million dollars?" Tracy's expression changed drastically. She turned to glare at Anthon. "You promised her ten million dollars?"

"Don't listen to her nonsense, Tracy." Anthon had an ugly look on his face. He glared at Faye. "She's just jealous of our engagement and is trying to drive a wedge between us," he said. He patted Tracy's shoulder.

Faye feigned shock. "Is that so?" She sneered. "Maybe I was the one who misremembered, then. Are you sure you didn't promise me ten million dollars as a wedding gift?"

"Please," Anthon scoffed. "You tricked me into saying that when I was drunk, Faye. Do you think a whore like you is worth ten million dollars? Don't make me laugh my teeth off."

Anthon felt a strong murderous intent as soon as he finished speaking. A loud slap echoed in the air and landed on his mouth.

Anthon cried out in pain. He stumbled back and instinctively covered his mouth.

"What's wrong, Anthon?" Tracy was shocked and immediately went up to him. Her face was full of worry.

He coughed twice and bent over in pain. He spat out two teeth and a mouthful of blood.

Not far behind him, a crumpled ball of paper towels was tumbling on the floor.

"Who did that?" His mouth was swelling and bruising, and his voice trembled when he spoke.

Faye looked at the man beside her in shock. She could feel his terrifying power but couldn't comprehend what had just happened.

How did he turn a ball of paper towels into a deadly weapon?

"Sorry …" An evil look flashed across Cedric's devilish face. He didn't look apologetic at all. "I thought you were a trash can with the foul words you were spewing, so I mistakenly threw it at the wrong place."

Anthon and Tracy were speechless.

Faye couldn't hold her laughter back anymore. Not only was Cedric ruthless, he also had a wicked sense of humor.

Strangely enough, she rather liked it.
