The next morning, after the doctor's visit, Bethany was still here organizing all the things I still had scattered around the room. I couldn't ask for a better friend than her.

My heart was mostly broken, but, on the other hand, warmed by the kindness and comfort of having someone to rely on in these moments.

"It's not about the child; I would be willing to love it as if it were my own. It's because of the lie and the extent it reached. It created a new life. And it would be a constant bond between them; I didn't want to be in the middle again."

I sighed, watching Bethany finish packing my clothes into the bag.

"Where are we going now?" she asked.

"I thought about our downtown apartment," I replied. "It's not far from here."

"As much as I love you, our little apartment in downtown Rookgaard doesn't provide the comfort you need right now," she said, tapping her fingers on her lips. "We can go to your house, the mansion."
