REIGN'S POV

I jumped, dropping my book as I heard the door shut tightly downstairs. It was startling hearing such a loud noise in a house that was usually quiet. I sat up when I heard feet stomping and groaning. Ivan must be back from the banquet.

It was really weird though. It was hard to tell whether Ivan was around or not because he never made noises going out or coming in. However, he was alerting everybody within a five-mile radius that he was back. I wondered if he was drunk again. I do not want to be in the presence of drunk Ivan ever again. He was brutal, unfeeling and had no bottom line.

I plopped down on my head, ignoring all the ruckus he was making. I had no idea if it was on purpose or if he was too out of it to caution himself but I wanted no interaction with him. I picked up the book I was reading and drowned out all other noises.

The book I was reading had the enemies to lovers trope and so far, it was really interesting. The male lead was just as mean as Ivan but th

IVAN’S POVTwenty five years ago.I laughed as I ran after the ball, excitement making my pace faster. I grinned when I was finally able to catch it. I turned back and waved at my mum. Her smile had me running back to her with my prize tucked under my arm.“ Mum, again. ” I grinned, wanting to continue the game of throw and catch where she would throw the ball while I run after it to catch it.“ Aren't you tired? ” She asked, caressing my sweat-dampened hair. Lately, mum looked more and more frail and I asked what was wrong with her but she just smiled and told me not to worry but I worry. I shook my head. “ No, it's the first time you have played with me in a while. ”“ But your dad will soon be back. You know he won't like to see you doing something so childish. ”The smile on my face disappeared at the mention of my father. I hated him. He was too strict and liked shouting at mum. He always told me to be a man and avoid childish things but I do not understand. I was a child, there

Mum was frail the last time I had seen her but now, Mum was fuller and bigger. Mum was healthy—My eyes shot wide open, the sunlight from the window, a startling brightness. I closed my eyes again, before opening them slowly, adjusting to the unwanted brightness.I sighed as I remembered the content of my dream. Could it even be called a dream when they are my memories? He turned back to look at me, his eyes clouding in realization. I had seen the scars on his back and they were not just any kind. They were whip marks, cigarette burns and others that I could place where he got them from. Just as I imagined several times, he had tattoos on his back but they were not enough to cover the gruesomeness on his back.Who did that to him?Ivan’s whole demeanor was clouded in regret and I knew if he could wipe my memory, he would.Realizing my continuous presence was a time ticking bomb, I turned back to the door, in a hurry to leave his sight. REIGN'S POV I peeked inside the kitchen and sighed in relief when I saw Ivan sitting at the counter and working. I took a deep breath and said a short prayer. “I can do this. I can do this.” I chanted like a mantra. I adjusted my dress and finally walked into the kitchen, trying to look nonchalant like I didn't come here for him. I leaned against the counter and tapped my fingers against it while looking at Ivan through side eyes to see if he noticed me. I deflated when he didn't even look up. What do I do to grab his attention?I took the seat directly opposite him and placed my forearms on the table. I plastered a smile on my face and focused all my attention on him. The last time I was in this position was when I was interviewing for a job at Everlight publications. The situations were not much different from each other. REIGN’S POV I hummed happily as I waited in front of Mel's door. The week had gone by rather slowly and I was glad I was finally done with it. It was crazy I had to face that every month. I had missed Mel immensely and we had chatted often but it was nothing like seeing each other in person.I knocked again when I didn't hear a response. I started getting jittery. What if Mel was not home? I didn't tell her I was coming so it would be a surprise but it looked like I came in vain instead. I sighed and turned around to leave when I heard the door crack open. I turned back with a smile on my face but it slipped when I noticed the state of Mel who was standing by the door. Her eyes were red rimmed and her mascara was smudged down her cheeks. “Mel, what's going on?” I asked, quietly and moved closer to her. As if she had been waiting for someone to ask, Mel sagged in my arms and burst into tears. I sighed and held her in my arms, patting her back gently. I led her into the house without

I shut the door after him and followed him back to the bed. “ Is there a problem? ”“ Ah, well, I brought these for you. ” He said, placing the things in his hands on the bedside drawer and taking a seat on the single sofa in the room. “ I heard a heating pad helps with cramps, as well as chocolates.
