CHAPTER 235
Nicholas mumbled for quite a while, before he unveiled his plan in front of Noel. "First, I did ask Peter to make a discreet inquiry into Hendrick's involvement with Ace, but since I suspect he's involved with Kevin as well, I might need your help as well."
But Noel waved his hand in the air. "I refuse."
"Why?"
"Investigating a criminal makes my head explode, now you're asking me to investigate a friend?" Noel immediately expressed her concern. "Let Peter do the job. They're close because they were assigned together. And it'll be easier for Peter to pry out information about Hendrick when they're talking casually about the investigation."
Nicholas hadn't thought of that because he was pressed for time, and Noel's words brought Nicholas to his senses. Nicholas nodded in agreement. "You're right about that. But, Peter is a junior police officer, what if something bad happens to Peter when we don't know about it?"
Noel rolled his eyes lazily. "Alright, alright. I'll join their team just in case. Why is it so hard to get to the point, you're pissing me off just so you know."
Nicholas chuckled amusedly. He pulled the coffee cup on the table and started drinking it again. "If Hendrick is caught playing games with his position on the force, he will be suspended. And if Hendrick is indeed an informant for the criminals out there, we'll be able to prevent the crime from happening again."
Nicholas' words got Noel thinking. The man was also looking for ways to keep their plan from being discovered by Hendrick. Noel muttered, then said, "So far, what has Peter found out about Hendrick? Is there anything suspicious?"
"Peter said that Hendrick met someone. He received a big box during a meeting under the city tunnels."
Noel tried to observe the situation first, before he finally said, "The city tunnel? It's a deserted area and rarely checked by patrol cars. What was he doing there? Did Peter see someone Hendrick met?"
"No, he couldn't see him because it was too dark. It seems like it was a secret deal, Hendrick tried to avoid the CCTV cameras, and the person who gave the box was wearing clothes that made his identity unknown." Nicholas took out his cell phone, then showed the contents of a message from Peter sent a few days ago to Noel so that Noel would trust him more. "Can you identify the face with this photo?"
Noel's brow furrowed. "He's wearing a hat and a mask covering his face, what can we expect from this?" Noel handed the phone back to Nicholas. "What exactly is Hendrick up to? This is starting to make me very curious, Nick."
"Peter says he's only been investigating Hendrick for a day, but Hendrick is already suspicious of him."
"How did that happen?"
"It seems Hendrick is secretly observing his surroundings too, Noel. And Peter's actions may have been too conspicuous."
Noel sighed, realizing the complexity of this situation. "So, we have to be careful. If Hendrick is already suspicious of Peter, we can't afford any more mistakes. We must approach him secretly."
Nicholas nodded, his mind racing with the urgency of the investigation. "Exactly. We can't risk leaking information. I want you to join Peter undercover, keep a low profile, and gather as much information as possible without raising suspicion."
Noel grinned, there was a hint of excitement in her eyes. "You're turning me into a detective spy now, Nick. I hope this won't be a disaster."
"Trust me, Noel, we have to do this. Hendrick may be involved in something bigger than we imagine. We owe it to our duty and the police to find the truth."
As Nicholas and Noel laid out their plan, they couldn't shake the feeling that they were venturing into dangerous territory. The mystery surrounding Hendrick was deepening, and the two prepared to unravel the puzzle while navigating the treacherous waters of deception within their own ranks.
"Hendrick knows a lot of information from our internal meetings. Wouldn't it be very risky if Hendrick continues to be involved in the investigation, and he leaks information to the person who ordered him to commit all these criminal acts?"
"You're right. But removing him from the team would also make Hendrick more suspicious."
"Now we're dealing with a double-edged sword."
Nicholas nodded in agreement, then rubbed his chin like a typical detective. "Speaking of Hendrick and Ace, I just remembered that Peter was talking about something else. Hendrick said he had information on Jason."
"What is it?"
Nicholas shook his head slowly. "Peter said that Hendrick didn't give that information, that Hendrick was still looking for evidence. What clues do you think Hendrick has found about Jason's death, but won't tell us?"
"Should we recheck all the data from Jason's investigation?"
"I'm not sure. Did you find Jason's wife and children?"
Noel shook her head. "I've coordinated with the police in England, but we have to go through a complicated procedural process. We still have to wait."
"If Jason's wife and children aren't at their home in England, that means they're missing, or worse, they're dead."
For a moment, they were trapped in an uncomfortable silence. They were both caught up in their own thoughts regarding the death of Jason, Jill, Alicia's parents.
"If those children died, there should be bodies," Nicholas said.
Nicholas and Noel exchanged glances, recognizing the potential tragedy that had befallen Jason's family.
"We need to find out what Hendrick knows about Jason. If there's any chance he has information that could lead us to his family or explain his death, we can't ignore it," Nicholas stated with determination.
Noel nodded, his mind already racing with possible investigations. "Let's concentrate on Hendrick's relationship with Jason. If we can get close enough to him, maybe we can subtly pry for information without arousing suspicion. But the most important thing now, is how we find the missing children. Where are they? And what about Jason's wife?"
As they were stuck in dead silence, the ringing of the phone on Noel's coat broke their concentration.
"Yes, hello?"
CHAPTER 236Nicholas overheard Noel's conversation as Noel immediately pressed the loudspeaker icon on his cell phone. Noel placed the phone on the table and turned up the call volume when the voice on the other side came on.[Hello, Detective Noel. Are you with Nicholas?]Noel looked at Nicholas, then nodded his head and answered the question from the other side. "Yes, I put this call on speaker so Nicholas can hear it too. Is there anything you found, Dr. Harris?"Nicholas rounded his mouth, knowing that it was Dr. Harris who was calling Noel. This was such an unexpected coincidence.Dr. Harris' voice came back on the phone. [The team from the lab just gave me the news. These are the results of the nail samples you found].Noel and Nicholas' faces both turned enthusiastic, they did not expect that Dr. Harris would give news in the midst of this very complicated atmosphere. Noel immediately replied to the doctor's words. "Yes, Doctor? What did you find?"[The nail clippings you found
CHAPTER 237Noel tapped her fingers on the surface of the table, she looked around. The scene outside Nicholas' room was still the same. There was only Elden at his desk. Hendrick and Peter were already in the field, looking for more information regarding the case they were on."Don't we have anything to compare Jason to? We could just go through all the items in Jason's pawn shop, couldn't we?" it was Nicholas' idea, he had become very ambitious after finding out Ace was involved in the death of Jill and her daughter. "If Ace can kill Jill and her daughter, Ace can also kill Jason and his family!""We haven't found Jason's children yet, Nick. Let's not make the wrong assumptions and opinions." Noel shrugged. "You know all the media outlets are highlighting Ace's disappearance, right? Especially if Wilson Blake really has recovered from his illness, we have to list Wilson Blake among the suspects. Especially if Wilson Blake does have murder plans for Alicia's parents."Nicholas massag
CHAPTER 238"Now, we have two pieces of solid evidence. We've matched Luna Winchester's testimony with the VVIP customer list we already have. Ace is connected to this case, he knows Jason. We just need to confirm that Ace came to the pawn shop on the day of the incident, so we can arrest him for Jason's murder."Noel, who was sitting next to Nicholas, nodded in agreement. He seemed to read all the notes in Peter's book, before finally handing over the notes to their owner."You talked to some of the people Jason had run-ins with?" Noel looked up, seeing Peter sitting at the back. The four of them, Nicholas, Noel, Hendrick and Peter were now sitting in Nicholas' car. They had a brief discussion in the car so that no one would overhear their conversation, as the media was starting to pick up on Jason's pawn shop. The murder case begins to rise in the media. Making the citizens of New York even more uneasy because of this horrific serial killer."Yes, sir! I spoke to two people who had
CHAPTER 239Nicholas maneuvers through the city streets, keeping a close eye on Hendrick's speeding car. The falling snow added urgency to the chase, creating a tense atmosphere in the air. Noel, who was gripping the side of the car, couldn't help but feel the tension of the situation."He's in a hurry, Chief. Do you think he's after us?" Noel asked, his gaze fixed on Hendrick's car ahead.Nicholas remained focused on the chase, determination etched on his face. "He might suspect something, or he's rushing to share information with someone. We can't let Ace get away."The chase took them through winding streets, with Hendrick's car weaving through traffic. As they approached a bridge, Hendrick suddenly veered off the main road, heading into a quieter suburb."He's deviating from the usual route. We have to be careful," Nicholas advised as he narrowed his eyes. The snowfall was getting heavier, creating a mystical atmosphere around the dimly lit streets.Hendrick's car came to an abrup
CHAPTER 240"Peter seems to be in shock about this, Nick." Noel watched Peter leave through the rearview mirror.Nicholas turned the car around, he took another route to drop Noel off. While looking at Peter through the rearview mirror at his side, Nicholas mumbled in agreement. "Um, you're right. He's in shock. Is this the first time he's been betrayed? Has Peter never been betrayed by his first love?"Noel laughed, then patted Nicholas on the shoulder. "You talk about women like you're a master of romance, huh? You're even dating a girl much younger than you now!""Hey, but we're both adults now!""Tsk, adults? You don't even know how to kiss, do you?"Nicholas rolled his eyes lazily. "You think I'm a pervert? Alicia and I are committed to marriage, our relationship is deep and serious. We don't spend the night just for one-night stands. Ah, why do we have to discuss this? I'll drop you off and go home to meet Alicia. I promised her to take her on vacation, but I have to deal with a
CHAPTER 241Alicia sat in a restaurant called Amore in her gray blazer and matching furry coat. A cup of hot chocolate was set before her, but Alicia still hadn't touched the chocolate-colored drink at all. Alicia checked the time on her left hand as she looked out the window. There was a large glass window beside her, so she chose the far end of the table. It had been five minutes since the waiter had placed the drinks, but the person Alicia was waiting for hadn't arrived. Alicia's heart started racing. She began to feel nervous and anxious. As she stirred her hot chocolate that was steaming on the surface, Alicia began to think of the words to say when she met her guest later. And after a few minutes, a familiar voice greeted her."Miss Alicia?"It was Felix, and a man dressed all in black was standing in front of Alicia's desk. Alicia looked up and smiled when their eyes met. Graciously, Alicia stood up and shook Felix's hand."Alicia, this is Christine. And Christine, as you heard
CHAPTER 242Christine tried to lift the corners of her lips, she smiled in front of Alicia to turn the previously sad atmosphere back into a relaxed and pleasant one. "At the company's internal meeting, you will meet with the board of directors, commissioners, important staff consisting of financial, managerial, marketing and other staff. The meeting is to announce that you will be the next CEO after the specific requirements given by Madam Michelle have been met. And, in fact, these people already know that I'll be the interim head while you're not in charge. Any decisions I make will always be discussed with you, and with Felix as the company's legal counsel.""Are any of them going to protest?"Felix chuckled. "Even if they have a lot of money, they can't buy the law. You will remain CEO, unless you get sick and write another will for the next CEO."Alicia's eyebrows knitted together. "What if I die?"Christine and Felix were silent. It was a very 'absurd' and terrifying question a
CHAPTER 243"Thank you for your time, I hope we can work together to improve Alpha Company in the future."Christine ended the conversation. They shook hands after enjoying lunch together. Alicia, who was still standing at her desk, watched Christine and Felix leave. They were getting farther away, and became invisible as they passed through the door. One hand reaching into her jacket pocket, she examined Anna Parker's business card and read it carefully. After a moment's thought, Alicia pulled out a cell phone from another pocket and called Nicholas. It took a few moments before Nicholas finally received the call."Nick! Where are you right now? Can we meet? There's something very urgent."[...]"Alright. Let's meet at Town Square, my location is quite close to that building. See you then."Since it was only a few minutes away from the restaurant, Alicia decided to run to Town Square. The place where she and Nicholas had promised to meet. Without waiting long, Alicia could see Nichol
