CHAPTE 34
Golden High School, 09:50.
The sound of the bathroom door knob being turned softly made Brittany, who had been sitting worriedly on her bed, turn around. She was waiting for Alicia, who had left a few moments ago to take a shower, but had not come out after an hour had passed.
"Alicia," Brittany murmured.
The blonde-haired girl opened her mouth wide and didn't seem to blink for a while. That was until Alicia's finger snapped out of her reverie.
Brittany let out a brief squeal before patting herself on both cheeks. "Oh my God, am I dreaming? Who is this girl in front of me?! Woohoo! Amazing! You look, you... Oh, my gosh, I almost stopped breathing," she said quickly.
The excitement in the room was caused by Alicia's physical transformation. The Brooklyn-born girl had dyed her hair jet black and straightened it--with Brittany's straightening iron--so her face looked very defined now. Plus, she wears short bangs now.
Her eyes had turned gray with soft lenses, while her eyebrows looked sharper because Alicia had shaved off a little of the lower side of her thick eyebrows.
"Calm down, Britt," Alicia said as she rubbed both sides of Brittany's shoulders.
"Gosh, why are you changing and surprising me all the time?"
Alicia chuckled amusedly. "Sorry for taking so long to borrow it," she said as she handed her best friend the straightener.
Brittany took a deep breath and quickly accepted the item. "Can you explain to me now, why your hair turned black and your eyes turned gray. Gosh, you're even starting to imitate Ace now!"
"Ace?"
"Yes." Brittany circled Alicia's body and continued, "You saw for yourself that that boy also changed his hair color to black. Are you two trying to imitate Nick or something?"
Alicia laughed in place. It was a laugh Brittany had never seen before. She cleared her throat softly and mumbled. "How do you think I look?"
Brittany leaned back and examined Alicia's body from top to bottom. It wasn't just her face that had changed. The girl's boyish style of dress was now transformed into a more feminine look with a white tanktop covered by a navy oversized jacket while the ripped jeans she used to wear were now a short black knee-length skirt.
"You look like..." Brittany paused her sentence and looked straight at Alicia. She was silent for a few moments, before the corners of Brittany's lips turned up. "Me! You look like me! This is awesome! We can share clothes from now on." Brittany turned around and went over to her wardrobe. "Maybe you can use my dresses or we can swap skirts from now on, oh, yeah, we can also--"
"Britt," Alicia cut in. So Brittany immediately turned around and gave Alicia that--as if asking what was wrong--expression. "I'm doing this as a disguise."
Brittany frowned. "Undercover?"
Alicia nodded and walked to her bed. She sat on the edge of the bed and Brittany began to follow her. Now the two faced each other sitting on their respective beds.
"I can no longer let the culprit get away, Britt." Alicia opened the choker necklace around her neck and showed Brittany the red line around her nape. "You can see it, right? This guy's not messing around. He really wants to finish me off." Alicia crossed her arms over her chest. "And to make matters worse, this guy also takes out anyone who gets in his way or suspects him."
"What do you mean, Alicia?"
"Britt, listen to me, I may not have known your boyfriend but I think it all started with him," Alicia said carefully.
Brittany bent her forehead even more deeply, because this topic of conversation was starting to confuse her. Really confused. "I don't understand," she said honestly.
"Did you know before that James was involved in drug or arms trafficking?"
Brittany shook her head weakly. "Did you know that there was someone who hated James so much, held such a grudge against him that they would even kill him?" Alicia added, and Brittany shook her head again. "It's all because the perpetrator probably did it so carefully and so close. You need to be very close in order to plunge a dull knife into the victim's chest and witness his suffering. So I guess that's the maxim the perpetrator used to finish the victim off."
Brittany got up and looked at Alicia enthusiastically. "If the culprit was so close, why was it so hard to get to him or her?"
Then the dark-haired girl got up and walked over to Brittany. "Because maybe he's not hiding in the dark. He's hiding his crimes in the light and he's making good use of that light." Alicia shrugged her shoulders. "Hasn't your girlfriend been followed since she left the room? That means, the perpetrator's intention to commit murder is very clear. He deliberately followed her as she began to panic and finished her off in the main hallway when it was quiet."
"I think he was... very desperate to do it," Brittany said.
"Yes, you're right." Alicia raised one eyebrow. "The perpetrator was desperate enough to kill his victim in a fairly public place, where someone might have seen them. But what's the truth? Even the surveillance camera didn't capture any images of the perpetrator and his potential victim. It went off as soon as I passed through the hallway and I'm sure it was intentional."
Brittany bit her lower lip in fear. "This is so horrible," she squeaked.
"She didn't do it by chance or under pressure, Britt," Alicia insisted. "She did it on purpose."
"'On purpose'?"
"The perpetrator chose the main hallway so that the body would be found quickly and the police would of course check the old CCTV cameras," Alicia said vehemently. "The perpetrator seems to know every corner of this dormitory by heart. He must have been inside the dormitory for the past few months and prepared all these surprises for me."
Brittany muttered. "So, you're saying James was bait to get to you?"
Alicia nodded in agreement. "But things started to go awry when Elena seemed to be covering something up and spilled the beans about the silver hairpin that only the person who found James first could see."
Brittany was silent for a moment before her face twisted into a look of admiration for Alicia. "You've never even talked this much before. That hospital has changed you, Alicia," she joked.
And the girl named Alicia just scowled in annoyance. "I'm being serious, Britt."
"Yeah, yeah, I know," Brittany said with a half laugh. "So, what do you want to do now? With that different-looking hair and face, of course? You must be planning something, right?"
Alicia nodded. "Yes. I'm going to try to attract the attention of the perpetrator."
"Attract the attention of the perpetrator?" Brittany frowned in confusion and gave a quick shrug of her shoulders. "But, how?"
"I'm going on a date with Ace."
CHAPTER 35"But why a date?"Brittany pushed her blond hair back, so Alicia could clearly see the diamond earrings in her ears swaying gently as they walked hand in hand towards the hall that morning.Alicia gave a quick shrug and replied, "I think the victims have something to do with Ace." Brittany immediately turned her head and gave her forehead a deep bend-- trying to recall the victims in order to agree with Alicia. "Or maybe the perpetrator is trying to frame him too," she continued."What do you mean?"Alicia leaned toward Brittany and looked seriously into her hazel eyes. "Do you remember, before someone tried to push you out the window, you told me that you heard someone calling in Ace's room?" Brittany nodded her head. "That means he was doing something in Ace's room. It could be a girl or a boy, let's call him or her what we think he or she is."The two of them then sat next to each other once they reached the hall. It happened to be history class that morning, where all t
CHAPTER 36New York City Police Department (NYPD) Headquarters, 1:00 pmThe young detective named Nicholas Gray looked up quickly when his coworker Hendrick Mckenzie--or Hendrick as he was more commonly known--tapped him on the shoulder. The hazel-eyed detective sat down in his chair--which was next to Nicholas' desk--and immediately handed Nicholas a dark brown folder. They had been in the same division (serious crimes division) for the past five years and their relationship had been very good. So it was natural for Nicholas to think of Hendrick as his own brother.Nicholas then enthusiastically accepted the folder Hendrick had given him. He had obviously been waiting for a lot of information from his colleague. "How is it?" and began to examine the sheets of paper inside carefully.Hendrick closed his mouth briefly. His eyes scanned the situation as he searched for the most appropriate words to explain everything to Nic at that moment. "This is very strange, Nic," he murmured hesita
CHAPTER 37The office of Golden High's CEO."You haven't answered my question, Alicia," Nicholas said urgently. His voice was low but affirmative. Their eyes met, even though they were now separated by a glass table in the room belonging to the CEO of Golden High, Mr. Wilson Blake.Alicia and Nicholas sat on different sofas facing each other in the room. Meanwhile, Ace chose to be alone by sitting on his father's seat of honor in the corner of the room so that he could freely watch the two of them from there.Instead of making a scene in the main hallway and being witnessed by many people (who didn't really understand their point), Nicholas decided to take the two of them to talk about all this in private, in the CEO's office - who happened to be away at the time attending an important meeting downtown. Mr. Wilson Blake also graciously lent Nicholas his office for the duration of the investigation with the agreement that Nicholas would catch the culprit as soon as possible."She went
CHAPTER 38"I don't think there's anything strange.Alicia and Brittany walked hand in hand with the other students to the sports stadium--which was in another building--at the Golden High dormitory that morning. Mr. Louis was the Golden High official who would be leading the fifty students in the gym that day. And let's just say that luck was on Alicia's side, because Brittany was also in the same class as her.Alicia and Brittany sat down in one of the stadium seats as soon as they arrived. "Are you sure? Why do you think James had to take that cocaine?" Alicia asked curiously.Mr. Louis seemed to have arrived late that morning. So Alicia and Brittany had more time to talk before class started.Brittany frowned. "To be honest, I didn't know he did drugs either. James has never done anything stupid in his life, other than putting an orange in his cereal bowl.""I see." Alicia nodded in understanding. Brittany seemed distracted by the question, so Alicia took her best friend's hand an
CHAPTER 39Golden High Sports Stadium, in gym class. The sound of the ball being purposefully dribbled during gym time made Nicholas even more convinced that Ace was telling the truth yesterday. That young detective walked slowly, taking in every inch of the indoor stadium built under Wilson Blake's rule with great interest. The interior looked luxurious and classy. Nicholas thought that the old man Blake did not want to be too conspicuous so he chose to apply a light blue color to the stadium walls. For the duration of the investigation, Nicholas or the team of investigators sent directly by Paul Scoots had full rights to the facilities in the dormitory. And all of that has been an agreement between the chief and Wilson Blake to find the serial killer who is still on the loose in the dormitory. They were so sure the killer was hiding in the school, that security was tightened, but as much as possible students were made to feel comfortable.Nicholas then sat in one of the stadium seat
CHAPTER 40Golden High School sports stadium building."PRIITTTTTTTT!!!!!"The whistle blown by Mr. Louis immediately echoed throughout the stadium. Making the basketball game being played by the girls' team stop instantly. The official who devoted himself to teaching this sports class immediately informed that the sports class was over and the students could return to the main building to rest. Some of them immediately left the stadium, especially the boys who had been competing since earlier. While the group of girls decided to first pull over from the basketball court before returning to the main building."ATTENTION, ATTENTION!" someone exclaimed. The voice that called out loudly in the middle of the stadium suddenly made the girls stop their activities and turn towards the source of the sound. And the voice came from Selena. The shoulder-length haired girl suddenly stood on one of the stadium seats and called all the students there to come closer to her."As a member of the popul
CHAPTER 41Dormitory hallway 001, room 020."Are you sure?"Nicholas pulled his gaze towards Noel and the other two officers who were now standing inside a room of one of the female students in the dormitory. The three of them had just conducted an investigation and search in each of the rooms.Room 020 was dominated by white walls. The owner's personal belongings, meanwhile, stood out in pink and black. The pink was definitely Brittany's and the black was Alicia's. Because both of their names were clearly displayed on the doorway.Noel approached and handed a silver hairpin in his hand to Nicholas. Just in case, the man assigned to search the dormitory was wearing latex gloves so as not to damage or remove anyone's fingerprints there. "Isn't this a hairpin and is it silver?" asked Noel rhetorically.Yes. The hairpin was indeed silver. And Noel had found it in Alicia's nightstand. Someone who had been suspected by various parties as the culprit.Nicholas then grabbed the hairpin and l
CHAPTER 42Aisle 001."WHY IS SHE DOING THIS TO ME?!"Ace then threw all his belongings that were on the bed such as pillows, bolsters, blankets and even his personal towel onto the floor roughly. He also grabbed his hair in frustration after pacing incoherently in his own room a while ago."Ace, can you stop?" asked Luke. "You've said that to me more than ten times. Plus, you're giving me a headache by walking around like that."Ace groaned in annoyance and threw his body on the mattress. He buried his face in the white sheets and let Luke, who was sitting on the furry carpet, roll his eyes lazily. "You look stupid doing all that stuff, you know," Luke added anxiously. To be honest, Luke had never seen Ace that upset in all his life. Plus, his best friend had just gotten upset over a girl."Why won't Alicia admit it, Luke?!" Ace sighed harshly and wiped his face as he turned around. Those dark brown eyes stared at the ceiling of his room dazedly. "She just hurt my pride, something th
