CHAPTER 151
"But Amanda..." Noel hesitated, remembering the unresolved thread in their theory.
"Amanda's disappearance complicates things," Nicholas admitted. "Her past story with Alicia might make her a potential player in this mess. But Amanda is long gone, let's leave her behind for a moment. She'll be seen if she's really involved."
As the pieces of the puzzle began to fit, Nicholas stood up, a flash of determination visible in his eyes. "We're going to track down Ace and uncover the truth behind these interconnected tragedies. That's the only way to end this sinister tale."
Noel and Hendrick exchanged determined glances, ready to dive into the web of events that had unfolded over the years, all connected by a common thread that led to Alicia.
"Speaking of which... I got some news, Chief," Hendrick said, cutting in hesitantly. "I heard that... Wilson Blake has recovered from his coma. I heard the news yesterday from an informant. And my informant linked it to the capture of the CCTV footage of Ace visiting the hospital."
"Damn, that old bastard's come back from the dead, huh?"
Noel pointed at Nicholas. "Your mouth is too rough, Nick. That's not good for a Chief's image, you know."
Nicholas immediately retorted. He shrugged his shoulders and shook his hands in the air. "Okay, I was wrong. Forget about it. But why are all these events connected so coincidentally? Then, what is Wilson Blake's condition now, he came back to life like a zombie?"
"Nick...,"
"Alright, alright. I just couldn't resist insulting him. He's so annoying," Nicholas said, then chuckled. He recalled the old days, of how Wilson bossed around him who was just an ordinary detective. "A bossy old man. He actually got sick and went into a coma before seeing me become a leader in the police force. Now, he's alive again. I don't know if I should be grateful or not."
Noel then said, "Should we check at the hospital? Maybe Ace said something that could be used as a clue."
"Ace paralyzed the policeman we assigned to guard Wilson Blake, do you think that annoying old man will easily reveal information to us? Ace must have told us something very secret. It'll be hard for us to find out. Maybe we should just watch him from afar, Ace could come to visit again."
Nicholas looked at his cell phone that he had just taken out of his pants pocket. The clock on the screen showed ten, which meant that the meeting had been going on for more than two hours. He then lifted his face and sighed. Looking at Nicholas and Hendrick, he said, "I'm going home today, and so are you. Tell Peter to resume the search tomorrow morning. We're already too tired from the past few days, we should take a break for tomorrow."
"Yes, Chief," Hendrick replied.
"You can go out now," Nicholas ordered.
As Hendrick walked out of the room, Noel walked over to Nicholas and sat next to him. "Are you going home?"
"No, I'm going to stay at Alicia's to make sure. She's alone and I think Ace is really after her. He wants to take Alicia, but I think... Ace tried to say something about Alicia. It's like he's worried about Alicia. But... what is he worried about?"
Noel thought. She frowned, then held her face in one hand. "Is he trying to protect Alicia?"
"Protect, hm? Are you kidding me?" Nicholas patted Noel's forehead. "We're trying to protect people from Ace. Ace is a killer, he wants to take Alicia. Doesn't that mean Alicia will be killed?"
Without waiting for a response from Noel, Nicholas got up from his seat. He tapped his partner lightly on the shoulder. "Are you leaving now?"
"Yes, I told you I was going to check on Alicia, didn't I? You might as well go home and rest, Noel. We're going to be very busy and tired tomorrow."
Nicholas walked down the dimmed street, his mind filled with the pieces of an enigmatic puzzle. The night cast elongated shadows, whispering secrets as the city slumbered. His footsteps echoed between the silent buildings, each step echoing a strong determination.
Arriving at Alicia's residence, he felt an unusual silence, the absence of the city's distracting hustle and bustle. He carefully climbed the stairs, his senses on alert. The door was slightly open, a sign. Nicholas carefully pushed it open, the creak magnifying his fear.
"Alicia?" he called softly, scanning the dimly lit interior. There was no answer, only an ominous silence greeted him. He took a cautious step, his heart racing, and realized something was wrong there.
Nicholas prepared to pull out a gun from his waist belt as he walked into the house. He was worried about Ace's presence. What if Ace broke in and managed to take Alicia with him?
Until then, Alicia appeared and made Nicholas brandish the end of his gun. "Nick?"
"Oh my God, Alicia! You scared me," said Nicholas, still with his panicked voice. Nicholas then lowered his gun, putting it back in its place. "You didn't lock the door, what are you doing at this time of night?"
"I'm making a pie. Want some?"
Nicholas' eyebrows furrowed. "Pie? You're making pie at night and forgot to lock the door?"
"Well, that's..." Alicia shrugged her shoulders with a reluctant smile. "I just finished throwing out the leftover eggs, I forgot to close it."
Nicholas breathed a sigh of relief, his tension easing at the sight of Alicia's familiar face. "You scared me to death," he admitted, a wry smile gracing his lips. He couldn't help but feel worried and amused at Alicia's explanation.
As she entered the kitchen, the scent of freshly baked cookies enveloped her, calming her nerves. "It smells wonderful," Nicholas said as he pulled out a chair. "Can I sit down while you work your magic with those pies?"
Alicia chuckled, rolling out the dough. "Of course not. This is my midnight therapy, you know that. But, you can take one to fill your stomach."
Leaning back, Nicholas observed her graceful movements and the ease with which she handled her ingredients. "You always find solace in baking. It's like your secret superpower."
She grinned, the dusting of flour on her cheeks accentuating her excitement. "We all have escapes, don't we?"
CHAPTER 152"Did you like the omelet I made?"Nicholas chewed the remaining food in his mouth, then nodded. All of Alicia's dishes were delicious and Nicholas agreed to express this to Alicia. "It's delicious. Your food is always good. Did you fry the onions?""Yes, I did a little experiment. I hope you like it.""It's delicious, believe me," Nicholas said, nodding his head. They finished their breakfast in just a few minutes. Nicholas had been staying with Alicia for the past few days, for her safety. Alicia was still waiting for the inheritance from her parents, so she felt the need to earn money until it was given to her.Alicia knew that Michelle and Edward cared about her because they were related to her previous foster parents. Alicia had heard that they were old friends in the past, there was an unpaid debt and they returned the favor by adopting Alicia. So all events involving Alicia's parents would always be related to Alicia."Last night... weren't you worried?"Alicia blink
CHAPTER 153"Look, Ace killed your schoolmates because he failed to kill you, that's according to Ace and that statement was taken as his testimony in the Golden High School serial murder trial, then the campus murders, the people he killed... it was all related to his family. The people who failed or tried to destroy his family, he'd kill."Alicia tilted her head and folded her arms across her chest. "What are you trying to say, Nick?""It means Ace kills with purpose, he has a goal. He doesn't kill outright like all the psychopaths out there. He just kills for the sake of it, but the masked man who shot me in the woods, he's very aggressive and without calculation. They are two different people.""Are you starting to find a common thread?""I believe they are two different people." Nicholas raised his finger, forming a V in the air. "These two different people worked together.""Are they men?""Of course. He is definitely a man. He broke into the prison to help Ace escape, but he mu
CHAPTER 154Nicholas ended the cold war by leaving the dining room. He left the empty plates and glasses behind, while pulling his long brown coat over his arm. Nicholas ran his fingers through his front hair, before looking at Alicia and saying, "I meant what I said. I won't let you be involved in someone else's death again. Understand?"But Alicia did not respond in any meaningful way. She remained silent and turned her face the other way, while rubbing her own arm lightly.A sigh could be heard from Nicholas, he could go no further than this and chose to leave Alicia's flat. Alicia watched Nicholas leave with mixed feelings. She was angry, sad, disappointed, anxious, all gathered into one uncomfortable feeling inside Alicia's chest.Alicia exhaled, before finally pulling on her furry hoodie and going to work at Uncle Chuck's shop. It was her first day working as a part-time waitress at the ice cream shop and Alicia didn't want to disappoint Uncle Chuck who had been so kind to her.
CHAPTER 155Alicia stared at the woman for a long time. Maybe a minute or two of silence. And Alicia could no longer hold back her smile. Ethan who was standing next to Alicia also glanced at Alicia awkwardly, he seemed to be saying what-the-woman-was-doing-to Alicia. And that situation, made Alicia clear her throat, "Excuse me, ma'am. You are our first buyer. Is there anything you need?" Ethan smiled along with Alicia, but he didn't say anything. "We have ice cream, hot drinks and bread. You might be interested in-""Caramel ice," cut in the woman in the red dress. Her face was partially covered by the red fedora hat she was wearing, but Alicia could clearly see how the woman in front of her grinned after cutting off Alicia's words. Alicia looked very awkward. It was her first day at work and she had already met a 'strange' customer in their first hour. Alicia and Ethan exchanged confused glances, before Alicia finally continued with a small smile. "Okay. One caramel ice cream. Anyth
CHAPTER 156Alicia pursed her lips. Her hands rested on her hips, her body beginning to feel the uncomfortable vibrations of the woman in front of her."I'm Angela Vashylchenko, you've probably never heard my name before," said the woman."What... did you organize all this?" asked Alicia nervously.Alicia's eyes looked straight ahead, at Angela who was now grinning slyly. She looked like a movie antagonist, her face stern with bold makeup and bright red lipstick. She had completely stolen the spotlight. Alicia also noticed Angela's expensive clothes. She was indeed a high-class woman, and wanted to show off her strong character to Alicia."I can't answer you," Angela replied casually, as if she didn't care about Alicia. "I didn't come to answer you. I came to check if Ace visited you. He's very obsessed with you."Alicia clenched her hands under the table. Her teeth hardened as she heard Angela talk down to her. She held back her emotions as she remembered Lily being one of the victim
CHAPTER 157Nicholas parked his car with other cars in the hospital parking lot. Golden Hospital was one of the famous hospitals in New York City. It had two different buildings. Where one building consisted of ten floors. This hospital was the place where Wilson Blake was treated, but it was a different building from the one that Nicholas was currently in.In his hurried pace, Nicholas still had time to check his cell phone from inside his long pants pocket. There were no incoming messages from Alicia, even though he was waiting for her. But Nicholas tried to push away the bad thoughts about Alicia and chose to focus on his current work. He passed through the crowded corridors of the hospital. On the first and second floors, Nicholas would find outpatients, while the floors above, were used to treat patients who had to stay overnight or undergo hospitalization. It was a well-equipped hospital and they contributed to the government, giving the hospital credibility.Golden Hospital was
CHAPTER 158After finishing helping Ethan at the cash register, the counter was finally less busy. Uncle Chuck was still busy making hot drinks in the kitchen, but Alicia couldn't help because Uncle Chuck wanted to take care of all the recipes himself. Finally, Alicia walked over to the empty tables to clean them up. She was already carrying a tray, ready to put the cups left behind by the customers and wash them, but then she stopped when she realized that Angela's used cup was in front of her. Alicia's eyes rounded upon realizing that the stainless straw that had been in Angela's glass was gone. The woman had taken it with her. Alicia examined the glass, perhaps there were fingerprints or traces of Angela's sweat that she could bring to Nicholas. However, Alicia had just remembered that Angela had used gloves to cover her fingerprints.Alicia sighed in annoyance. "Damn! That woman did come up with a plan!"Unable to do anything, Alicia could only carry the glasses on the table in su
CHAPTER 159Ace sat in front of a long table with a young girl sitting opposite him. It was a long table for two people only. The girl in front of Ace raised her wine glass in the air, then grinned and said, "Shouldn't we make a toast to celebrate our reunion?""I didn't come all the way here to have a reunion with you," Ace denied, but he still took the glass of wine in front of him and gulped it down without a toast. "I need you to do something for me, Amanda."Amanda took a small sip of the wine in her glass, just to wet her lips before she finally went back to talking to Ace. "You asked Selena to come to me, carrying a message that I heard was from Ace. Well, I was impressed to hear that you sought me out for help. But unfortunately, you're not being very friendly. Can't you relax a little and enjoy the meal I've prepared? I even prepared a suckling goat to welcome you here. This is my new palace, don't you want to give me some appreciation?"Ace took a deep breath, then exhaled q
