CHAPTER 132
Alicia came down from her room and met Nicholas in the living room. The aroma of meat grilled medium rare with mushroom marinade greeted Alicia's sense of smell as she approached everyone. She smiled when she saw Emma setting the steaks on the table.
"Wow, that smells delicious!"
Alicia's compliment made Emma turn her head. The woman in her knee-length purple leisure suit smiled. She put her arm around Alicia and said, "You're ready for dinner, aren't you?"
Alicia nodded in agreement. "Did you make all this?"
"Of course. You can see the men busy grilling the meat outside, Alicia." Emma moved her face forward, she spoke in a whisper. "They should be kept busy so that they don't bother us women."
At this, Alicia laughed. They laughed together until Nicholas and Alan came into the living room. At the family table they sat like family, eating and laughing together. Small talk warmed the atmosphere. Simple conversations that made Alicia forget for a moment the sadness of her parents' death, and gave Nicholas a break from thinking about other people's problems.
The wound on Nicholas' leg had healed, although it had left a mark. He was recovering well and it was helping him to carry on as usual.
"Thank you for the meal, Emma," Alicia said, ending their dinner.
Emma was clearing away the dirty dishes, when Alicia thanked her while lifting the empty glass left on the table. Emma's face took on a curious look as she finally opened her mouth. "You're welcome, darling. But I want to know about you and Nic. Are you guys serious about this relationship?"
Alicia walked after Emma who was carrying all the dirty dishes into the kitchen. Alicia helped Emma rinse the dishes and stood next to Emma who was busy soaping and scrubbing the entire surface of the dishes.
"I think I'm interested in him, but... there are still a lot of things I need to think about, Emma."
"Are you guys getting married?"
Alicia looked at Emma with a surprised expression. Of all the questions, why would Emma ask something like that
The sun set below the horizon, casting a warm glow through the kitchen window as Alicia pondered Emma's unexpected question. The clatter of dishes filled the air, punctuated by the soft hum of conversation.
"I... I haven't thought that far ahead," Alicia admitted, her mind drifting to the complexities of her young relationship with Nicholas. "It's still new, you know?"
Emma nodded understandingly, her hands methodically rinsing the remaining dinner plates. "New love is a complicated thing, my dear. It takes time to understand where it's going."
Alicia's mind wandered back to the whirlwind love story she shared with Nicholas. A chance meeting during a storm, the fabric of their lives amidst chaos and uncertainty. She sighed softly. "I think we're both figuring it out as we go along."
Emma smiled, setting aside the last dish. "That's the beauty of it, darling. Finding each other, unraveling the mysteries of your hearts."
As they dried their hands, Emma turned to Alicia, her eyes filled with a mix of wisdom and warmth. "Remember, love is not a destination, but a journey. It blooms, grows, and transforms."
Alicia nodded, a newfound sense of reassurance settling inside her. "Thank you, Emma. For everything."
And Emma put her arm around Alicia's shoulder as she whispered, "You're welcome, darling. You're like family, and we hope... God bless you in all good things."
The sound of Nicholas' footsteps made Alicia and Emma turn around. The man's presence in the doorway made Alicia and Emma cover their mouths, not wanting to continue the conversation they were having. Nicholas leaned his arm on the wall and looked suspiciously at the two women standing next to each other.
"What are you talking about here?" Nicholas made a confident face. "You're talking about me, hm?"
Alicia walked up to Nicholas, then pinched the man's cheek boldly. "Don't even think about it! Let's talk outside."
"Okay." Nicholas waved to Emma. "I'll talk to Alicia, Mom."
"Okay."
Alicia led Nicholas outside, the cool night air bringing calm to the tense atmosphere. She turned to Nicholas, with a cheerful glint in her eyes. "You're not as sneaky as you think, trying to eavesdrop on our conversation, um?"
Nicholas grinned, a mixture of embarrassment and amusement dancing across his face. "I couldn't help it. You two seem to be talking about something serious. Should I be worried?"
He shook his head, a small laugh escaping his mouth. "Not at all. Just sharing time with Emma. She's always full of wisdom."
Leaning against the porch railing, Nicholas' expression softened. "I like her. She reminds me of a grandmother character on television, she's wise and caring."
Alicia nodded, her gaze fixed on the starry sky above. "She's been through a lot. Her advice, it's like a compass, you know? It helps navigate the storm."
Nicholas stepped closer, his fingers intertwining with hers. "Speaking of storms, our meeting during that storm feels like fate now."
He squeezed her hand gently. "Funny how life gives us these unexpected moments."
She tilted her head, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "What do you mean we're in the middle of one of those unexpected moments?"
Alicia laughed, her voice audible in the quiet night. "Maybe. But isn't that what makes life interesting?"
They stood there, enveloped in a comfortable silence, each lost in their own thoughts. The night breeze whispered between the trees, bringing with it a sense of promise and adventure.
Nicholas broke the silence, with a note of curiosity in his voice. "So, what exactly were you and Emma talking about?"
Alicia grinned, there was a cheerful glint in her eyes. "It's a secret. If I tell you, I'll have to take you to dinner tomorrow to keep my mouth shut."
She pretended to gasp dramatically. "Blackmail? I might have to reconsider this relationship!"
He nudged her lightly, laughter bubbling up between them. "You wouldn't dare. Now, let's get back before Emma starts thinking we're up to something."
And so the two of them went inside the house after enjoying the cold and snowy night air.
CHAPTER 133Brittany was discharged from the hospital today. Everyone welcomed her home. Including Alicia, Nicholas and Noel who came along to make Brittany feel better. Alicia and Nicholas had even decorated Brittany's room with balloons and streamers, as well as a welcome home greeting with the help of Susan, Brittany's mom.Brittany, who was in a wheelchair, was pushed out of the car and Paul, her father, helped her into the house. To her surprise and delight, Brittany found beautiful, simple decorations to welcome her home."Welcome home!" everyone shouted when Brittany saw the decorations in her room. The blonde girl covered her mouth in surprise. She was delighted by the small gift she had received.Brittany's eyes filled with tears as she saw the loving effort everyone had made for her. CHAPTER 134Nicholas and Paul were back at the BBQ party held behind Brittany's house. Everyone enjoyed the party. The food served by Susan was delicious and complete. They could choose from a variety of delicious foods on the table.Paul joined in and grabbed a can of soda from the table, they were avoiding alcohol and such until Brittany's accident case went to trial. Paul raised the soda in the air and said, "Let's toast to my daughter's freedom! Cheers!""Cheers!"Everyone raised the soda can in the air. Brittany's welcome party was warm and fun. But not for long, because Nicholas, Alicia and Noel had to leave to go back to work to prepare for Brittany's trial.Kevin would bring the best lawyers to fight Brittany in court, he was serious about making Brittany the real culprit of their accident. And Nicholas, couldn't be that casual. They got back into the car, but Noel drove his own car."We're going to the forensic lab to examine the evidence," Nicholas said, but Alicia held the
CHAPTER 135Everyone came out of the courtroom very emotional. Kevin and his family looked sad, mixed with anger. The senior lawyer, who was paid a lot of money by Louis, did not do his job properly. He failed to get Kevin off the charge. Louis was furious with the lawyer. Louis had spent a lot of money, but it was still a loss like this. What the hell!Meanwhile, from the opposing team, Brittany was seen hugging Alicia happily. She felt grateful for her success in winning the case. Even in this case, Brittany was still reprimanded for consuming alcohol. It was no big deal. She did have to pay a fine and Brittany agreed to the punishment. They crossed paths outside, and at that moment, Brittany said, "I'm going to talk to Kevin first. You guys can wait outside, I'll be right behind you."And everyone agreed to listen to Brittany. As for Kevin, his parents who were staring unhappily at Brittany were asked to leave first. Meanwhile, Kevin walked over to Brittany.Kevin sighed, then star
CHAPTER 136After solving Brittany's case, Nicholas decided to return to Alicia's flat. Alicia was uncomfortable staying too long with Nicholas' parents, and she was also worried that something bad might happen to Emma and Alan.Alicia opened the door in front of her. Her house, which had been a mess due to the fight between Nicholas and Ace a few days ago, was no longer there. The simple interiors and minimalist items in Alicia's flat gave the girl more space. After all, she wasn't interested in having a lot of stuff in her house. All the things she had, she needed."Are you staying tonight?" Alicia placed a cup of hot tea on the table, in front of which Nicholas sat.Nicholas looked up, he had just straightened his legs which were sore from the long journey. And mumbling his agreement, he said, "Of course. I can't risk leaving you alone when Ace returns."Alicia sat next to Nicholas. Her brow furrowed in confusion. Holding back her doubts, Alicia continued, "Do you think he'll come
CHAPTER 137"Stop this, Hailey!"Louis hugged Hailey from behind to stop her from hurting herself. Hailey had been screaming like crazy since this morning, thrashing around in her house. Hailey started throwing things, screeching like a person losing their mind."What do you want?!"Hailey cried as she screamed, calling out for her beloved son who was now in prison. She fell to her knees while pulling at her wavy blonde hair. Hailey had been acting strange since this morning and it made all her makeup disappear, her hair a mess, her lips pale."I want Kevin home, Louis!" Her voice was soft and sounded painful. She looked up, staring at her husband who stood with a tired face. "He shouldn't be treated like that. It was just an accident! Why does he have to go to jail?!""It's just a few months, Hailey, you have to be nice to make it easier for your son."Hailey clucked. She seemed fed up with her husband's soothing words. She grabbed her husband's trousers and knelt down. "Please, use
CHAPTER 138Alicia woke up after a few hours of sleeping on the sofa. She blinked lightly, before realizing that part of her body was already covered by the warm blanket. She looked ahead. The windows outside were already dewy with snow, but the sky was beginning to clear. Morning had come, leaving behind a night of memories. Alicia moved her gaze around, she was not alone in the living room. Nicholas was there, asleep on another sofa with another blanket covering his entire body. From his curled up gesture, Alicia could immediately tell that Nicholas had been enduring the cold since the beginning. Alicia smiled a little at the man's behavior.Normally Nicholas would wake up first, waking Alicia up with the scent of vanilla and kneaded flour, but that day Nicholas didn't wake up. He must have been as tired as Alicia. The series of crimes had yet to be solved. The case of Alicia's parents' death, finding the location of Ace and Amanda, and other crimes that a police chief like Nicholas
CHAPTER 139With every spoon of soup savored and every glance exchanged, the air was calmed with a serenity that only deep affection can weave. Nicholas reached for Alicia's hand across the table, his touch bringing comfort. "You know, I've been thinking about it."Alicia raised her eyebrows, intrigued. "About what?"Leaning in, Nicholas spoke softly, as if sharing a secret. "About us. About where we're going."Alicia's heart raced, the world around them fading into the background. "And where do you think we're going?"She made a circle with her thumb on Alicia's hand, her eyes never leaving hers. "Forward. Together. Always."Her breath hitched, the words hanging in the air like a promise. It was in that moment that Alicia felt the weight of his words, the depth of his commitment.Alicia squinted, holding back the red tinge that suddenly appeared on both of her thin cheeks. Caressing the line of Nicholas' nose, Alicia whispered, "Isn't it too early in the morning for flirting, Nic?""
CHAPTER 140The steady, constant sound of the device on the monitor suddenly showed a change. The straight line turned upward and began to wavy as Wilson's fingers moved slowly on the bed. There was movement. And a nurse named Liliana, who was working that day, noticed it immediately.Liliana glared in surprise, but then pressed the bedside button to call the doctor on duty that day. Not long after, Dr. Benneth came and saw Liliana."What's wrong, Liliana?""Mr. Blake is showing movement, Doctor," Lilliana informed him. "I've checked his pulse, heart rate and blood pressure. He... has progressed. Everything is normal."Dr. Benneth listened intently to all of Liliana's reports. He then nodded, "I'll check it myself," he said, and Dr. Benneth took out a stethoscope from the pocket of his white medical coat. He pressed the rounded end of the stethoscope against Wilson's chest, listening to his heartbeat which had changed compared to before. It was several minutes before Dr. Benneth final
