“That was a successful party we had on Friday night, don’t you think?” Bryan Casalengo asked his daughter, Maeve as she walked down the stairs dressed in a pair of black pants, a white lacy blouse topped with a black jacket. Her heels make a loud click-clack sound as she walked towards her father.
“Good morning to you, dad,” She said, leaning down to kiss his cheek before taking her seat across him. “And yes, it really was a successful party.” She had spoken to as many investors as she could, familiarized herself with the bosses of the business world, even made a couple of acquaintances in the entertainment industry; and while some of them still doubted her capability, they thought her charming and sweet enough to want to talk to her.
“Good. I think you will do great, Maeve. I believe in you,” He said.
“Well, you are one of the few people who think that,” She muttered under her breath. For all her bravado, Maeve was a jumble of mess. She had spent all weekend coming up with a proposal for the Bass Project and for some reason, it just didn’t feel right. It didn’t help either that more than half the people around her already made it clear that they thought her unfit and incapable. Loudly, she said, “I know dad, I’ll do great.”
“Good. And are you sure you are fine?” He asked, watching her intently.
Maeve paused. He had been asking her that question since Saturday when she found out that her party made the headlines of newspapers and magazines and not for being an amazing, successful party – no, not that – but for her throwing Dominic Fitz out, which didn’t actually happen by the way. Turns out his millions of fans online were pissed that she had the audacity to do something like that and well, they’ve been calling her all sort of names online since Saturday. Maeve squared her shoulder. “I’m fine, dad, really. I told you I was fine when you asked on Saturday, I told you I was fine when you asked yesterday and I’m telling you know that I’m fine. I’m okay.” At least, that wasn’t a lie. She truly was okay. This wasn’t her first time trending negatively online. In fact, before she left for Spain, she was in the news for something terrible every goddamn week – either she was caught making out a different guy once again, or she was photographed drunk by the roadside with Imogen, or drunk at a public event or she was disrespectful to a public figure – it was one fucking thing or the other. So, the last thing on her mind right now, was a couple of deranged chronically online fans who thought their opinions about her behavior mattered.
“How is your proposal coming along?”
“Great,” Maeve answered with a bright smile which was clearly fake, but she hoped her father couldn’t notice.“You know if you need any help, you can ask me or anyone in the office. We will really be happy to help.”
“Sure. I’m going to ask Noelle to schedule a meeting with Uncle Dylan on Thursday but before then, I’ll be showing the entire board the final proposal. You’ll be available, right?”
“Of course.”
Maeve grabbed her bag and rose to her feet. “Thanks, daddy.” She leaned in to kiss him again on his cheek, then, straightened up. “I have to go now. Noelle has been waiting in the car for me.” She waved her father goodbye and walked out of the living room. Her car was parked right by the entrance by her driver who sat patiently, waiting for her.
“Good morning, Miss Maeve,” Noelle greeted as Maeve opened the door and climbed in.
Maeve grunted a reply, as the car began to move. She dug her phone out of her bag and turned it on. The first thing that popped up was a message notification on I*******m. She curiously clicked on it and her mouth dropped when she saw who the message was from and its contents.
@officialdominicfitz: don’t you just hate when things turn out the opposite of what you expected? A scowl appeared on her face as she re-read the message over and over again. Dominic Fitz was a fucking bastard. She considered this petty and shallow and probably something she would have done if the case was reversed, but still…… She slipped her phone back into her handbag, inhaling and exhaling to calm her nerves. Then, she turned to her personal assistant.“How did Dominic Fitz get an invite to my party?”
Noelle raised her head very sharply. “Ma?”
“You heard me. How did he get an invite to the party? I made it very clear that he wasn’t to be invited but somehow he showed up with an invite. How did that happen?” Maeve asked, boring her gaze into her personal assistant’s face.
Noelle refused to meet her gaze, keeping her stare fixed on the space between them. “I don’t know, ma,” She answered slowly. “I….I….didn’t…..I don’t….”“I hate screw-ups, Noelle, and I hate people who don’t listen to a word I say. This is your first strike. Better make sure it’s your last.”
“Yes ma,” Noelle answered thought gritted teeth. She was so going to kill Dominic when she got home. She had just nearly lost her job, thanks to him! Noelle glanced at Maeve who was now simply relaxed on the car seat her eyes closed. Briefly, she wondered what was going on in Maeve’s mind. Her boss was an enigma and Noelle was fascinated by her. She wondered what it was like to be her – so carefree, and uncaring and just a badass in general.
“Why are you staring at me like a fucking creep?” Maeve suddenly snapped at her.
“Oh.” Noelle quickly looked away, muttering her apology under her breath, her cheeks coloring from embarrassment.
The car rolled to a stop in front of the company and Maeve waited for her driver to climb out and open the door for her before gracefully stepping out, one leg after the other. She walked right into the company with her personal assistant right on her trail. As she walked in, she ignored the greetings of the people around her, walking towards the elevator. She pressed a button and the doors slid open, revealing a lady standing inside.
The lady’s eyes widened on seeing Maeve. “Good morning Miss…..ma…..”
“Out,” Maeve said simply. The lady stared at her in confusion, rooted to a spot. Maeve raised a brow at her. “Do I need to repeat myself?”
“No, sorry,” She gushed, rushing out of the elevator.
Maeve walked in, followed by Noelle who pressed the button to the last floor and the doors slid close. Maeve’s phone dinged with notification. She had a good mind not to check it, knowing it would be something about her and Dominic again. She rolled her eyes, fisting her hand around her bag. The comments and tweets people made about her online weren’t exactly what bothered her. It was the fact that Dominic Fitz seemed to think he had won that made her seethe with anger.
The elevator came to a stop and the door opened. The both of them walked out, heading for Maeve’s office.“Miss Maeve?” Noelle called in a timid voice. She waited for a reply but got none.
Maeve continued walking briskly, ignoring her.
“Miss Maeve,” She started again, “I wanted to ask how the proposal is coming along,” She said in such a small, timid voice, I sounded like she was asking a question.
Maeve glanced at her sharply. “What do you mean?” She demanded. “Why are you asking?”
“Nothing. I….I just wanted to know if there is anyway I could be of help.”
“Why? What are you trying to say? That you don’t think I’m capable?” Maeve snapped. She had stopped walking, and was now glaring at Noelle, arms akimbo.
“No, no….I,,,,,just,,,,,” Before Noelle could form a coherent sentence, Maeve whirled around and walked into the office. Noelle hurried after her, stepping in, just as Maeve was about to slam the door against her face. “I just thought that I could help you, take off the burden a little.”
“What burden? Did I complain to you?” Maeve snapped, her tone bristle and hostile.
“No, but I…..” Noelle was confused. All she did was offer to help. Why was Maeve being so mean? If only she knew the amount of insecurities Maeve was currently battling with, maybe she would have taken those words with the pinch of a salt. Maybe they wouldn’t have bothered her as much. “I just want to be involved that’s all,” she said slowly. “I’m your assistant. I should be able to help with things like this.”
Maeve slumped into her chair, turning slightly. She rubbed her palm across her face with a loud sigh. She knew she was overreacting. Noelle had done nothing wrong by offering to help and it was wrong of her to lash out simply because she was feeling insecure. But she wasn’t going to apologize. “Fine. What do you have in mind?”
An excited smile bloomed on Noelle’s face. “I have something on my laptop that I was working on. I can go get it.”
“Sure, go ahead.” Maeve watched as Noelle nearly skipped out of the room in excitement. She wasn’t sure if she was doing the right thing by trusting Noelle with something as important as the Bass Project. But then again, Noelle was just a measly personal assistant. It’s not like there was anything she could do to sabotage the project.
Dominic Fitz had no time for social media. He considered it a frivolity and a waste of time alongside family dinner and friendship hangouts. However, he has someone in charge of his social media accounts – John – and that someone could not stop yapping about how he was trending on social media. At first, Dominic was chagrined at the narrative that was flying about, saying Maeve threw him out of the wedding. Threw him out?! There was no one who could throw the Domninic Fitz out of an event, not even Maeve as stubborn and bull-headed as she was. His anger soon evaporated when he realised that every comment and tweet on the situation where all in his favour. He had John sit in his office and read out every single comment. Dominic was not one to smile but he was tempted to when he thought of how annoyed Maeve would be at this situation. He could bet that she was obsessed with it, throwing tantrums and crying about not being liked by people. He couldn’t resist himself from asking John to
The driver climbed out of the car, turning around to open the door for Maeve. He did it so fast and as soon as he opened the door, he jumped back. He had to because Maeve climbed out of the car so fast, she could have hit him without a care in the world, and he knew she was angry. He had seen it the moment they left the Bass Industries. She had climbed into the car and slammed the door close behind her, snapped at her personal assistant, Noelle Gentry and even at the driver. Noelle had silently gotten into the car with her, her hands folded meekly across her legs as she stared outside through the window. She and the driver both knew that any word from the both of them would infuriate Maeve further. As Maeve climbed out of the car, she slammed the door so hard, the car jerked. Noelle quickly climbed out, rushing after her. Maeve shoved her bag into Noelle's arms so roughly that the girl stumbled. Then, she whirled around and stormed into the office. The workers in the office immediate
Dominic sat in his car, waiting patiently, his hands on the wheels. He glanced at the time on his phone. It was half past seven. He had been here since half past six, almost an hour ago. In fact, he was very much aware of what time Maeve had pulled into the parking lot. He watched her climb out of her car, lock it and walk into the restaurant. That was almost forty five minutes ago. He knew how angry she would be if he was late and he purposely waited in his car just for that. The moment it was fifteen minutes to eight, Dominic climbed out of his car. He locked the door, turned and began to walk into the restaurant. He had to admit, the restaurant she had picked was a good one – lovely and quiet. When he stepped in, he noticed that all of the booths were private, the perfect place to have a private conversation. He paused for a minute, sighted Maeve in one of the booths and began to walk towards her. Just as he had predicted, she was angry and it was evident on her face. Without eve
Maeve laid sprawled across the bed, her eyes closed. Her alarm rang for the hundredth time and she reached out, slamming it off. She turned around on the bed and closed her eyes again. She wasn’t exactly sleeping. In fact, she was very much awake, she just refused to pull herself up from the bed; and no matter how she tried to force herself out of bed, her mind and body refused to cooperate. All she could think of was the fact that she had just lost one of the most important opportunities in her career to Dominic Fitz. Why would she be motivated to go to work after that? Why would she even want to go? So, everyone can whisper and gossip about how she was a failure? So, they can talk about how right they were when they said she was undeserving of the job? No, thanks. Maeve closed her eyes and willed her mind to go back to sleep. If she was asleep, she would not be forced to think about what was clearly going to become the biggest failure of her life. Just as her mind was about to coop
Maeve glanced at her wristwatch. The time read half past nine in the morning. She glanced at the building in front of her and let out a small sigh. Beside her, her personal assistant, Noelle looked at her wondering what was wrong. The both of them were seated in the car waiting in front of Bass Enterprise. They had a meeting scheduled for ten o’clock in the morning and they were both excited about it. Maeve was doing a good job of concealing her happiness though. She had a bored look on her face as she constantly glanced at her wristwatch, waiting for the time to clock quarter to ten before she would get out of the car. Once it was quarter to ten, the driver climbed out of the car, rushing to open Maeve’s door. She climbed out briskly, walking into the building with Noelle scrambling after her. The security man opened the door and the both of them walked in. The receptionist behind the desk immediately rose to her feet the moment she saw Maeve approaching. “Good morning, Miss Casalen
The moment Dylan Bass walked out of the room, Maeve turned to Dominic Fitz, her eyes narrowed in anger as she glared at him. “You! What the hell did you do?” She demanded. Dominic looked at her innocently. “What do you mean?” he asked. “I didn’t do anything.”“This was supposed to be my project,” She yelled at him. “But of course, you have to ruin everything as usual. Ugh, I so fucking hate you!” She grabbed her bag aggressively from the table, pushing the chair back and jumping to her feet. She whirled around and shoved her bag in Noelle’s hands.“Maeve, are you sure you want to leave? We can talk about this calmly.”Maeve whirled back to face him. “Don’t you dare!” She snapped. “Don’t you even try to pretend you are the logical, rational one here and make me feel crazy. Don’t you even dare.” She turned back to Noelle. “You! Let’s go.” Maeve shoved the chairs aside angrily, walking out of the room in anger. She stalked towards the elevator, rapidly clicking on buttons. “Ughh!” She l
There was a knock on Dominic’s door and he let out a small groan before he asked the person to come in. The door opened, revealing his personal assistant, James. Or is it John? He could never really tell but who cared anyway. Without looking away from his computer, he asked, “What do you want?”“We received a message from Dylan Bass, sir,” his personal assistant replied. “Casalengo Enterprises has agreed to the deal.”Dominic’s ears perked up at those words but he tried not to show his eagerness. He simply raised his head slowly to look at his personal assistant. “I see….” he answered. “Well, message Casalengo Enterprises directly and inform them that we need to meet so we can begin working on this immediately. Dylan Bass wants it completed by the end of the month.”“Yes sir.”Dominic nodded dismissively at him, turning back to his work. However, he sensed that James…..or John was still standing by the door. He raised his head and he was right. “Is there something else you need?” he a
What was that saying – where there is family there is love? Well, right now, Dominic was not feeling a lot of love towards his family. He was seated on the couch, fuming inwardly. Across him was his father and mother and at the other side of the room was his step-sister, Noelle. He and Noelle had arrived about ten minutes ago to find his parents waiting outside his home for him.The atmosphere was tense and uncomfortable, and Noelle shuffled around on her feet, itching for someone to break the silence, while Dominic glared at his parents, especially his father. “Anna, how was the journey here?” Noelle asked Dominic’s mother politely, finally breaking the silence. She cringed at the question. The journey here? It wasn’t like they lived at the other side of the world. Although, they did live a good thirty to forty-five minutes away from them. “Oh, it was great, darling, thanks for asking,” Anna answered kindly. Despite knowing that Noelle was her husband’s bastard child, she still tre
Maeve chewed on her lower lip as she stared at the cover of the magazine. Dominic Fitz was once again on the front page of the magazine for being the most successful businessman of the month. She stared at the cover for a while, her eyes fixed on the picture. She had not seen him in a while, not after their heated kiss in the toilet, which happened weeks ago. Actually, she saw him from afar in a couple of business events and red carpets events and parties, but that was where it all ended. She made it a point of duty to avoid him all the time. It did not help that every time she saw him, she was reminded of their kiss. It did not help that she wanted a replay of that kiss, every single time, even as she was staring at the picture. There was a knock on the door and Maeve immediate shove the magazine under the table, straightening up as the door opened and her boyfriend, Issac, walked into the office. Yup, she had a boyfriend. After their first date at the restaurant where she arrive
Maeve was excited. When was the last time she got the opportunity to prep herself like this, she wondered to herself. When was the last time she actually went on a proper date. She did go on a lot of dates when she was in Spain, but most of those ended in one night stand and she never saw them again. But this particular one, she wanted to see him again. She wanted to see Issac after today and she needed to make a good and lasting impression. So, Maeve stood in front of the mirror that morning, prepping her face. Looking beautiful was a strenuous job, she thought to herself, as she carefully rubbed across her face with a face sponge, but it was always worth the job. The process was quite nice too, knowing that once you were done, you’d be getting the necessary result. After taking care of her face, Maeve stepped into the shower to wash her hair. She took her time, washing it thoroughly and slowly, combing her hands through it, and letting the water wash the soap away. Afterwards, she
Maeve could hear the loud sound of the door knocking from her sleep, but she found it difficult to wake up. She twisted her body around the bed, squeezing the sheets with tightly closed fists. A very loud knock sounded on the door, jerking her awake. She immediately shot out of bed, her eyes flying open. The side of her head banged furiously, as she sluggishly climbed out of the sheets, slipping her feet into her flip flops and walking to the door. She unlocked it, opened it and sighed when she saw Imogen at the other end. “Should have known it was you,” she said, turning and walking back to bed. “Good morning to you too, Maeve,” said Imogen as Maeve bounced on the bed. “Don’t go back to sleep, I came to talk to you!”“Go away!”“Don’t be silly, Maeve. This is past ten, wake up.”“It’s Sunday, for fucks sake. Let me sleep in peace!”“Come on Maeve!” Imogen slumped on the bed beside her. “Come on, talk to me!”Maeve raised her head with a groan as she glared at Imogen. “You are annoyi
Maeve stood in front of the mirror, admiring her dress. Her stylist had really outdone herself with this floral dress. She had paired with stilettos and a small purse. Her hair was parked into a high ponytail and her makeup looked flawless and stunning. She was going to be the centre of attention at the event which was exactly what she was going for. She grinned at herself before walking out of the room. Her father was downstairs, dressed in an expensive black tuxedo, waiting for her. As he saw her approaching, a smile lit up his face, “Ready?” he asked and she nodded. He held his hand out for her and she took it. Together, they walked out to the limousine waiting outside for them. Tonight, Dylan Bass was finally going to launch the project in this exclusive event that Maeve and her father were attending. Ever since the interviews and magazines releases, the publicity and awareness of the project had skyrocketed, so, even when Dylan Bass got wind of what was happening, she made the d
Maeve slammed the phone down with so much vigor, a small smile on her face. She felt victorious. Dominic really believed he was going to come for her like that and get away with it. Maybe now he would learn to stop playing in her face. She shook her head, still smiling as she grabbed one of the magazines and studied her picture on the cover. She looked amazing, her hair flowing down to her waist, her legs strutted out and her hips bent to the side as she struck a pose. She flipped the magazine open, her eyes scanning through the article written. As she read it, she kept chuckling. She could see how and why Dominic was pissed. The article really painted Fitz Industries in a bad light and exposed Dominic for the fraud he was. Clearly, he didn’t want that. There was a knock on the door, causing Maeve to raise her head up. “Come in,” she called, closing the magazine and pushing it aside. The door opened and her personal assistant, Noelle Gentry, stepped into the office, before closing t
The day started out as normal as usual for Dominic Fitz. He had left the house very early, heading for his office and he was currently sitting by his desk, reviewing a couple of documents. He and Noelle had gotten into a huge fight, early this morning before she left – his mother had called the previous day to invite them for dinner, Noelle wanted to go but Dominic declined for both of them. Safe to say that Noelle was not at all pleased by this and all hell broke loose. She yelled a couple of names at him before storming out to work angrily. Now that he thought of it, he realized Maeve would have to deal with a moody and irritated Noelle. The thought made him smile. Everything went downhill the moment his personal assistant, John, rushed into his office, holding the phone in his hand. “Sir…your father wants to...speak to you…”Dominic sighed, rubbing his forehead with his palm. “Can it wait? I have a lot of things to work on right now.”John glanced at the phone nervously. “It’s…it’
Dominic climbed down the stairs dressed in a pair of suits and holding a briefcase, looking like every inch of the businessman he was. He descended the stairs in quick yet elegant steps. Immediately his chef saw him walking down, she rushed towards him, greeting him, “good morning sir.”He grunted in reply.“Would you like to have breakfast sir?” She asked. “No,” Dominic answered simply, heading for the door. He walked out of the house and immediately, a car drive up to him. The driver climbed out, turned around to open the door for him and waited as he climbed into the car. Then, the driver entered into the car and started it, driving away. Inside the car, Dominic scrolled through his phone. He had just received a message from Maeve asking him to hurry up. This time, the had agreed to meet at her office. They had already started working on the project and it was shaping up nicely. Even though he and Maeve still could not stand each other, the job was still going on smoothly. Someti
Maeve cursed under her breath as she prepared for her meeting this morning. Dressed in a pair of pink suit and a silver shoe with a silver bag to match, she had her hair packed into a bun. She walked out of the room, a frown on her face. As she descended the stairs she found her father sitting by the table, having his breakfast. “Good morning, dad,” She greeted. He glanced up from his food. “Morning, darling. You look amazing.”Maeve grinned at his words, despite the annoyance brewing in her – not at her father of course but at the meeting she clearly had to attend. “Thanks, dad.” She assessed him slowly, noticing that he was dressed formally in a pair of black suit. “Are you going to the office, dad?”“Yes. I thought I would pop in to see how things are going,” he answered. “I won’t take long, though. Just a while.”“Oh,” Maeve answered. “But I’m not going to be there.”He paused his eating briefly, looking up at his daughter. “Why?” He wondered. “I told you I have to meet with Dom
