Chapter 4 | Familiar Stranger

I had the strangest kind of dream, with that same man, the one with eyes like polished emeralds. It was a different time and place, but I got the same sort of goosebumps when I saw him.

“No, please! Don’t leave me. I feel terrified! I need you here. Our baby needs you here.” I implored some other guy with blue eyes to change his mind. This man was my husband. His face exuded sadness and helplessness.

Sweat slicked my skin, and my breaths came in ragged gasps. Trapped in bed, my arms held by two women, each contraction brought a fresh wave of agony. My water broke six hours ago. But the searing pain in my heart, the fear of being separated from my husband, eclipsed the physical torment.

"No," I rasped, tears mingling with the sweat on my brow. "If we are to die, let it be together."

“I am so sorry, baby!” His voice cracked. “We don’t have much time left. He will be here anytime now.” He was talking about that stranger and I was terrified, shaking with sobs.

“If he is going to kill us anyway, can we not die together? Please stay with me.”

He rushed to my side, his finger brushing against my lips. "Don't speak of such things, Nyla. You will live. I have men guarding the escape route. I’ll hold him off as long as I can."

I tried to stop him, but he talked in rapid succession, giving me instructions.

“The baby is almost here. Ralph is waiting on the other side of the trapdoor. He will take you to safety. Please listen to me for once.”

He looked at one of the women who was the midwife, and she nodded assuringly. He leaned down to kiss my forehead.

“Goodbye, Nyla.”

And just like that, he rushed out of the room without looking back. The midwife got up from her seat the next moment, preparing to leave.

“Where are you going?” The other woman, who was sitting close to the bed, asked the midwife in a surprised voice. Her name was Maya. I knew somehow.

The midwife stammered, “I-I am sorry, but I have to g-go. I don’t want to d-die today.”

She looked at me with a guilty face and continued, “Your baby is the heir to this kingdom and a potential threat. He will kill the baby the minute he gets here. Trust me when I say that today would have been the proudest day of my life, helping birth the future king, if things were different. But the kingdom has fallen and most people are either dead or taken prisoners. I hope you can forgive me.”

Maya pulled out a dagger and stopped the midwife from leaving.

"Leave," I whispered, urging them both to escape. "Save yourselves."

“Never, Nyla," she vowed, her voice unwavering. "I will protect you until my last breath, even if death is inevitable for us both.”

Another agonizing contraction stole my breath, but a new sound pierced the tense silence—my baby's cry, clear and strong, echoing through the desolate halls of the fallen kingdom.

Relief washed over me as I cradled my precious daughter, her cries a soothing melody in the face of impending doom. The heavy footsteps and clash of steel downstairs confirmed my worst fears.

My husband must have been killed if the other man was already here. My heart rate sped up.

Maya hurried to open the trapdoor. With every bit of strength left in me, I got up to escape with my baby in my arms.

The door to my chamber flung open, and my gaze collided with the emerald eyes of the man who stole my husband's life.

Face and breastplate blotched with blood.

Gashes cut in his arms.

He held a long sword in one hand that dripped his enemy’s blood. His eyes—those same mesmerizing eyes.

He stood in a frozen state at the doorway, and his gaze was fixed on me, a silent exchange of emotions passing between us. Maya shook me back to my senses, the urgency in her voice cutting through the haze.

More men followed him and looked menacingly toward us. Maya won’t stop shaking me for some reason.

“Allena, wake up!”

“ALLENA!”

“What?!” I shot upright, gasping for air, the dream's vividness lingering. The fear, the pain. This Nyla and Allena seemed to be me and I was them, somehow.

"Are you all right? You were whimpering in your sleep." Selma asked with a concerned face. The little girl from Yesterday was also standing next to her.

"Y-yeah, yes! I am fine. It was just some crazy dream," I muttered, the events still playing on repeat in my mind.

"Is your headache gone?" Selma touched my forehead, her brow furrowing. "You're burning up."

"I'm fine," I insisted, though my voice lacked conviction. Brea reached out, her tiny fingers tracing patterns on mine.

"Hi," she chirped, a shy smile gracing her lips. "I'm your niece, Brea."

"Hi, Brea." I returned the smile, warmth blossoming in my chest despite the circumstances. She clambered onto the bed, settling comfortably in my lap.

"You have about two hours to eat breakfast and get ready," Selma announced, her voice strained. "They'll be here soon."

Oh right, the engagement to the stranger!

She looked stressed, and her stress was contagious because I felt it immediately.

"Your sister will help you get dressed. She picked some clothes and jewelry for you to choose from."

My steps were slow and heavy as I made my way to the bath, the dream swirling in my mind. The outside world buzzed with activity. The roundhouse bustled with preparations, the fire pit crackling with life as more food was cooked. My brothers returned from their hunt, followed by a pack of hulking dogs that resembled wolves more than any husky I knew. They carried a deer, the bloody mess sending a shiver down my spine.

"Allena, grab a bite, and go find your sister right after." My mom was hustling around.

"Come on, Allena!" Iona's voice, laced with excitement, pulled me from my thoughts. "Let's make you look stunning!"

Her tiny room, overflowing with clothes and unconventional makeup tools, was a whirlwind of activity. We settled on a beautiful teal skirt, adorned with tiny bells at the hem. The black silk blouse clung to my form, both elegant and sexy. Iona finished the ensemble with a gold torc around my neck, the metal cool against my skin.

"You have these leather sandals with small straps that will look great with this dress. Let me go get them from your room." Iona walked out chirpily.

I studied my reflection, the dream's flush still lingering on my cheeks. Nervousness gnawed at my insides. Iona's room, though chaotic, felt like a refuge. I explored the space, finding a makeshift seat among the scattered clothes. Her makeup tools were an assortment of berries, rocks, and strange implements. She showed me a concoction of sandalwood and herbs for the bath, a dark pigment for my eyelashes, and a mix of berries she claimed perfectly complemented my new outfit.

A smile tugged at my lips as I admitted to myself that I found a wonderful sister. Growing up alone, I had never experienced such a delightful sort of sibling love.

"Here you go," Iona announced, brandishing the sandals. "You saved these for a special occasion." The sandals were pretty indeed.

She skillfully braided my hair, securing it with an ornate pin. I loved the finished look with my newly acquired honey blonde hair. The baby hairs formed beautiful, delicate curls around my face.

Stepping back, Iona studied her handiwork and clapped her hands. She was very pleased with herself.

"You are ready for the dude!" she declared with a wink.

The air hummed with anticipation. The crisp wind whipped around the hillfort, carrying the scent of roasting meat and nervous excitement. I looked down at the River Boyne, which like a silver ribbon, snaked along one side, while majestic mountains guarded two others. The chief's family and their kin gathered from all sides, overlooking a panoramic vista. They appeared to be wearing their best outfits; tartan woven skirts or long trousers, fur cloaks, brooches, armlets, and torcs. "There they are!" Iona exclaimed, her voice tinged with excitement.Goosebumps erupted in my skin as I followed her gaze to the distant procession snaking its way towards us, litters and carriages pulled by snorting horses and burly mules, and impossibly handsome horseback riders."And there he is! Isn't he gorgeous?" Iona nudged me with a mischievous grin.A shiver ran down my spine as my eyes landed on a man riding ahead of the others. He emanated an aura of raw power, his face etched with a scowl that sent

  • Love Without Time Limits (AC2)   Chapter 6 | Feasting with the Sorceress

We marched down to the village, with Marcus no longer by my side. A sonorous, lilting kind of music grew louder and richer as we neared the bonfire. The villagers had already gathered by the fire and the atmosphere was noisy and lively. There was a group of people dancing by the fire and another group singing and playing music to them. Wafts of food and wine saturated my senses. I felt at ease for the first time since the last two days that I have been here. Marcus's presence had a calming effect on me, which was completely unexpected. All my apprehensions about him felt unwarranted when I saw him laugh carelessly with his family. The warm bonfire glow transformed his face into a picture-perfect vision.

It was mid-afternoon the following day when the Romans were getting ready to leave. They camped all over the hillfort starting from outside our house down to the village.Marcus and the men that rode with him in the front of the procession Yesterday were nowhere to be seen. They seemed to be his close buddies. They kept him company throughout his meet and greet with the villagers during the feast. And yet they didn't care to say a word to me. Most of his family, except for his mom, grandparents, and one sister, didn't seem to care about talking to me or my family. In fact, his brothers' wives gave me hostile looks.

I made my way home, feeling flustered with all the new information. What point is that stone when I don't know how to use it? I looked around with uncertainty. It was broad daylight just a minute ago, and I wasn't afraid one bit to walk alone. But that changed very quickly when the sun went down. Darkness engulfed the village within seconds.A lurking shadow loomed out of the dark and made me jump and scream involuntarily. I was too scared to look at what or who it was. I ran towards the hillfort but it caught up with me. Someone's arms forcefully grabbed my waist from behind.

Marcus's POV I am not sure what exactly happened. Ever since I set my eyes on Allena, I feel bewitched. I have seen women that are far prettier and well endowed than her. Any man would find my girlfriend, Laelia, irresistible. I had no doubts about how much I loved her and felt dedicated to her. And yet, my faith in love and loyalty seemed to be shaken now. I couldn't put thoughts of Allena away from my mind. And I couldn't put a finger on what's causing these irrepressible feelings. I felt thunderstruck when I saw Allena. I tried to hide the waves of emotions I experienced, tried to p

Laelia's POV I watched her as she walked into the dining area. There was nothing special about her, maybe a bit cute with a sweet face. She was anything but my equal; I was worried for nothing. I know that Marcus's love and affection towards me are very much genuine, but I wanted to make sure that he wasn't going to indulge in meaningless sex with this woman. He had a huge appetite and it made me insecure sometimes. When he returned after the engagement and I asked him how she was, all he said was.. meh. But I must have imagined the distant look on his face when he replied because she was indeed meh.

Marcus's kiss kept me awake all night. My feelings for him are changing too quickly. I thought he had a mean look when I saw him ride with the procession for the engagement only ten days back. But now, a few hours ago, I felt that he looked cute when I was stuttering and he was confused about what I wanted to say to him. And those green eyes, they appear to be telling me so many things, things that make me comfortable around him even though his words are cold and harsh. His arms felt like a safe haven. I could stay there until the end of time. His one kiss had the power to stir so many unwanted feelings inside me. I don't think I have the strength to stand it when he pushes me away for another

The sooner you tell your husband about your truth, the better. Ease him into it, now!" A strong wind blew and she was vanishing into the desert soil. "No, no, no! WAIT!!" That guy looked exactly like him but spoke perfect English," Jake said, pointing to Marcus."Please ask him about Allena's condition," Marcus prompted him.I was so confused about who this other Allena was if Alyssa was in the alternate world as Allena. How many worlds have these people infested? The Druid translated Jake's words for Marcus, "Looks like she underwent the last surgery and was out of danger. As expected, he is going crazy as to why both Allena and Alyssa are still unconscious. He is also suspicious about who we really are. Alyssa said you were h

Marcus's feet staggered, and I caught him from falling to the ground. She loaded the next one to aim at Marcus again."No! Stop!!"He seemed to be awake but not able to get off the ground. What the hell did she shoot him with? Poison?I ran to stop her but was too late. She took a shot at him again."Stop, don't kill him." My voice cracked when I tried to beg.She grabbed another dart and was loading once more. I reached close enough to attack her, but she pulled out a strange weapon from underneath her tunic and moved toward me threateningly, speaking in a foreign language. But what was she going to shoot me with? She loaded nothing in there. It was too tiny to be a weapon. Was she fooling me?I disregarded her warning and pulled my knife out from my boot while grabbing her hair with my other hand.I heard a click sound and saw her nervous expression before she pressed it again. She was too slow, and I had already

I followed Marcus to the hallway where all the guests were accommodated, including my family. He lightly tapped on a door and stepped in.The windows facing the courtyard were all shut and I couldn't hear a thing. I exited the house through the garden entrance to see if the room had windows facing the river like ours. I scaled up to the second floor and stayed behind the window curtains."It just occurred to me now. No wonder she couldn't visit Chicago." I heard Marcus's voice."If the stones work only one way, how were we able to return then?""I think by one way, it means the place where they can be activated from. We can activate my stone only from here. And hers only from Chicago. We used the portal you created from here to return. If the portal had closed, I think we would have been stuck in Chicago."Chicago, portal, stones... what was he talking about? After the wedding feast, Marcus was beginning to look distracted and stressed again. His eyes wandered around, searching for someone. Who else would he be looking for?"Are you looking for Laelia?"I couldn't hide the anger out of my voice. He made me feel so special that I forgot all about her existence until now."Laelia is not here," he said"Was she not invited? Or did she not want to come?"If I had to attend my boyfriend's wedding, I would probably be a crying mess.He looked at me with amusement."Why do you care?""I don't care. I will take it as an insult though if you stare at her while I am in your arms."He stroked my cheek, setting it on fire, "How can I stare at anyone else?"I was at a loss for words. I should be feeling ashamed of myself. I made such overconfident claims, even said to Marcus many times, that I loved Neill. Here I was, dying to hear such cheesy words from him.Ev

Alternate World TwoMarcus's POVI struggled to focus on what was important. Things were a mess in Chicago, and I was clueless as to what exactly was going on.Thankfully, the Druid from here was very cooperative. He looked almost a decade younger than the other Druid. I was wary about giving him all the details at once and freaking him out. He was already quite panicked that I knew his time traveler secret. But once I talked to him long enough explaining my situation, and when I told him that an older version of him existed, he was all up for helping and meeting his older self. He wanted to know what he had done differently so far in the parallel universe, and all the adventures he went on.The older Druid definitely went back further in time or lived longer in the past to have aged so much more. This younger Druid was particularly excited about portals to the alternate world, which I had no idea even existed. If they did, it w
