The air of the Moonlight Festival was alive with energy, a symphony of laughter, music, and the tantalizing aromas of food wafting through the stalls. Lanterns hung from the trees like tiny, glowing moons, casting a soft golden light over the forest clearing where the townspeople had gathered. Elena walked beside Sara, her best friend since childhood, soaking in the festive atmosphere.

“This is exactly what I needed,” Sara said, her voice light as she linked arms with Elena. “A night to forget about everything - papers, deadlines, and that obnoxious coworker of mine.”

Elena laughed, nudging her playfully. “You mean Ben? I thought you said he had a "charming smile.’”

Sara rolled her eyes dramatically. “Charming, yes. But not when he’s talking about his golf game for the tenth time this week.” She groaned, pulling Elena toward one of the food stalls. “Come on, let’s get something to eat before I lose my patience with the entire male species.”

They stopped at a brightly decorated cart serving roasted chestnuts and skewered meats, the vendor smiling warmly as they placed their orders. Elena’s stomach growled at the sight, and she realized how hungry she was. She accepted her skewer with a grateful nod, the scent of spices and charred wood making her mouth water.

As they turned away from the stall, Sara nudged Elena with her elbow. “What’s next? Drinks? Dancing? Or should we find that tarot reader you were eyeing earlier?”

Elena smiled, but before she could answer, a familiar voice called out from behind her. “Elena! Is that you?”

She turned instinctively, recognizing the voice of Professor Harding, one of her university colleagues. As she spun around, the motion was quicker than she anticipated, and she collided with someone - hard.

“Whoa!” A deep, smooth voice resonated in her ears, steadying her as strong hands gripped her arms to keep her from falling.

Elena looked up, an apology on the tip of her tongue, but the words dissolved as she met the gaze of the man standing before her. He was tall, easily over six feet, with dark hair that seemed to gleam in the lantern light. His sharp jawline and chiseled features gave him an almost otherworldly beauty, but it was his eyes that left her breathless - intense and piercing, a deep amber that seemed to glow with a warmth and mystery she couldn’t explain.

For a moment, she forgot where she was, her heart pounding as the world around her seemed to blur. He was the most stunning man she had ever seen, and the way he looked at her - as if she were the only person in the crowded festival - sent a shiver down her spine.

“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice low and smooth, carrying a hint of concern.

Elena opened her mouth to respond, but no sound came out. Her brain seemed to short-circuit, the rush of emotions rendering her speechless. She blinked up at him, her cheeks flushing as she realized she was still staring.

Sara stepped in, her voice breaking the moment. “She’s fine! She just… didn’t see you there,” she said quickly, offering the man a polite smile. “Right, Elena?”

Elena managed a nod, her voice finally catching up with her. “Yes, I-I’m sorry. I wasn’t paying attention.”

The man’s lips quirked into a small smile, his grip on her arms gentle as he helped her regain her balance before stepping back. “No harm done,” he said, his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer than necessary. “Enjoy the festival.”

With that, he turned and walked away, disappearing into the crowd as quickly as he had appeared. Elena watched him go, her heart still racing, her mind replaying the moment over and over.

“Okay, what was that?” Sara asked, her eyes wide as she grabbed Elena’s arm. “Do you know him? Because if not, I need to know who he is. That man was gorgeous.”

Elena shook her head, still trying to process what had just happened. “I don’t know him,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’ve never seen him before.”

“Well,” Sara said, her tone teasing as she led Elena toward one of the nearby benches, “you better hope you bump into him again, because that was the kind of meet-cute people write romance novels about.”

Elena laughed nervously, but her thoughts were still on the man - the way he had looked at her, the warmth of his touch, the intensity of his presence. There was something about him, something she couldn’t quite put into words, that left her both intrigued and unsettled.

As the festival continued around them, Elena couldn’t help but glance through the crowd, hoping for another glimpse of him. But he was gone, leaving only the memory of their brief encounter and the lingering feeling that something extraordinary had just begun.

She wasn’t entirely human - his wolf had felt it - but her connection to the supernatural world was faint, as though hidden beneath layers of humanity. The bond between them was undeniable, but the implications were enormous. A human mate, even a partially wolf one, was a complication he couldn’t afford as Alpha.“Ren.” The familiar voice of his beta, Kael, broke through his thoughts.
