Aurora:

I froze in my tracks when I heard the announcement. What?

“Wait, what?” Trish’s voice sounded from the other end of the call. “But you don’t even have a speech prepared,” she added, sounding worried.

I wasn’t sure how I ended up hanging up, but I knew my fingers must have slipped and tapped the screen out of shock. I wasn’t used to the spotlight yet, and an impromptu speech was only going to make things worse.

Trish’s word about Adrian coming here didn’t matter anymore. Because as soon as I gave this speech, I was leaving immediately - at least to avoid running into him.

Adrian doesn’t scare me. Definitely not. I just think my life would be a lot more peaceful if I never had to cross paths with him again.

The crowd settled into clapping for me as I made my way to the stage. As soon as I reached the podium, my fingers brushed against it, and silence fell over the room.

The host, Mr. Robert—a middle-aged man and one of my business partners—spared me a half-smile before stepping back, letting me take the stage completely.

All eyes were on me. Cameras pointed in my direction.

I took a deep breath, then smiled before starting.

“Good evening, everyone. First, I want to thank the organizers of this event for putting together something that truly matters. It’s easy to write checks, to fund projects. But what we’re talking about tonight goes beyond that. It’s about showing up, taking responsibility, and ensuring that our impact isn’t just temporary, but lasting.”

I spoke without pausing, feeling the strain of it in my throat. I had a gut feeling that if I took more than thirty seconds to breathe, I wouldn’t know what to say next.

“When I started my consulting agency, my goal wasn’t just to help businesses ‘give back.’ It was to change the way we think about philanthropy. Charity shouldn’t be a marketing strategy. It shouldn’t be about optics. It should be about real change for the society.”

My fingers tapped the podium absentmindedly, though not loudly, as I scanned the audience. I spotted Noah back at our table, watching me like everyone else.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with organizations that understand that. I’ve seen firsthand what happens when resources are placed in the right hands, and when funding goes beyond temporary relief and creates opportunities. And that’s why we’re here. Not just to donate, but to invest. Not just to support, but to empower.”

I took a deep breath. I wasn’t entirely finished, but somewhere in the crowd, a clap started. Then another. And before I knew it, applause rippled through the room, followed by raised glasses in toast.

Someone walked onto the stage and whispered something to Mr. Robert. I barely registered their exchange because I was too focused on finishing my speech. But then, beside me, Robert stiffened. He murmured something back to the man before both of them left the stage.

Was everything okay? I frowned, it didn't feel so. But I pushed the thought aside and continued.

“I can’t express how grateful I am to be chosen as the lead consultant for this major charity project. This initiative isn’t just about aid. It’s about building and about equipping communities with the tools to sustain themselves long after everything else is gone.”

Suddenly, murmurs spread across the room. I couldn’t hear what they were saying at first, but from the table nearest to the stage, someone whispered, “He’s here?”

I frowned. Who’s here?

A moment later, the large entrance doors swung open.

My throat tightened and I struggled to complete my speech.

“Let’s make sure that when we leave this room, we don’t just feel good about what we’ve done. We should feel accountable for what comes next. Once again, thank you all so much for giving me this opportunity.” I ended it with a smile.

As soon as I finished, the room erupted in applause again. I stepped off the stage and shuffled for my phone inside my bag. The murmurs grew even louder than before.

“I thought he was out of the city?”

“I heard he’s back.”

“Since when?”

“Tonight, I think.”

I didn’t need someone to sit me down and spell it out for me. I already knew what was going on.

Was I scared? No.

Eager? No.

Happy? Absolutely not.

Then why were my fingers trembling?

I pulled out my phone and headed toward the hallway, dialing Edward’s number.

Someone intercepted me, and I stopped walking, looking up to see who it was. I released a breath of relief when I realized dit was Noah.

“That was a nice speech,” he complimented, and I smiled.

“Thank you,” Only if he knew it wasn't planned out before. Something I would need to give Bonnie an earful for later.

I looked down at my phone as the call connected. “Edward?”

“Yes, ma’am?”

“Where are you?” I asked.

“I’m outside. Are you ready to leave?” he responded.

“Yes, I am.”

There was some shuffling on his end before he sighed. “I don’t think you’ll be able to make it through with the crowd out here.”

I didn’t think so either.

As a security guard passed by, I stopped him and asked, “Is there a back door?”

He simply nodded and pointed toward a hallway.

“Thank you,” I muttered, but he was already gone.

Jesus. Wasn't it just a man? Why was his arrival enough to cause this much chaos?

I sighed because I knew the answer to that. Everyone in New York respected Adrian.

“There’s a back door around here,” I told Edward. “Can you check it out and wait for me there?”

“Sure, ma’am. I’ll be there in two.”

The call ended.

Noah turned to me, watching me. “Are you leaving already?”

“Yes. I’m not feeling well.”

“Oh.” He nodded. “You should go, then.” He sighed. “I guess I’m left without a plus one now.”

I let out a small laugh, about to say sorry, but he stopped me.

“I’ll walk you out.”

Without another word, he led the way toward the hallway.

Before we could get to it, all of a sudden, the entire room fell into silence. Everyone stopped moving.

Noah and I were the only ones still shuffling through the crowd.

And then I felt his presence, even before I turned.

Just a glimpse. Rory, just a glimpse.

As we reached the hallway, I risked a glance over my shoulder. And I saw him.

Adrian hadn’t changed.

His sharp eyes, broad shoulders, and tailored suit framed his build perfectly. His jaw was firm, his expression was blank. Bored, even. It didn’t change, not even when high-profile elites approached him with handshakes and greetings.

I was just about to turn away when his gaze swept across the hall. Like he was looking for someone.

His eyes swept pass me, but then it snapped back to me.

And almost instantly, they stopped.

His bored expression shifted, his dark eyes stared at me intensely.

At the same time, I turned my head—and walked away.

♛ Aurora: “So, when's the meeting supposed to be held?” I looked up from my laptop and asked Bonnie, who was standing across the office table. She looked down at her tab, fixed her glasses on the bridge of her nose with a finger, then returned her gaze to me. “On the 14th, next Friday,” she muttered, pushing back a strand of her curly hair that had fallen on her face. Her warm black eyes stared down at me. She was a petite young lady, around 5’5 in height. I stared at her, wondering exactly what made Mia have doubts about her. Bonnie was respectful and diligent in her work—exactly what I needed—so I couldn't just dismiss her because of Mia’s doubts. I nodded in understanding before turning my attention back to the screen of my laptop. It had been three days since the charity event, and the call-up meeting, where the major investors would meet to discuss the huge charity project, was set to take place in exactly four days. Being the major consultant on the project, I had to b

♛ Aurora: The car came to a stop in front of a massive enterprise. Before my chauffeur could step out to open the door for me, I had already done it myself. Bonnie stepped out of the passenger seat and walked over to my side as I made my way inside the building. “What's the name of this big investor?“ I couldn't help but ask. Bonnie glanced down at her tab, “There are supposed to be up to eleven investors on the list. But I could only find the names of ten of them.” She explained, and muttered to herself, “I wonder why.” Despite how ridiculous it was that the meeting time had been abruptly changed, I had no choice. My hands were tied, and I was forced to attend, regardless of my displeasure. Bonnie and I had wrapped up everything that needed to be done, and I came prepared with what I had. As we reached the reception area, I skimmed through the work I had to submit while Bonnie conversed with the receptionist. After a moment, she returned to my side and muttered, “Th

And I didn't want this, but then I didn't really have any other choice. Mr. Lancaster shifted in his seat, he didn't seem to know what to say either. The same way other investors were quiet. They were all looking at me, perhaps wondering what exactly could be my hesitation in accepting. In plain sight, there was no issue in what he proposed. It was easy, I could just accept and go through him as long as other investors had no issue with it. But considering I didn't want to have anything to do with him, there was an issue. Big one. I could clearly tell that Adrian knew what he was doing. And that burned me deep, infuriating me. Lancaster spared me a glance, he hesitated, but then lowered down a little, gesturing my assistant closer to mutter something into her ear. Bonnie walked back to me, and lowered

♛Aurora: “This really doesn't make any sense, Rory. And it's beginning to give me the creeps. I'm even more worried about your dismissal of everything.” I absentmindedly rubbed my abdomen, feeling empty and almost lost as a sudden flash of memory hit my head the longer I trailed my fingers around my stomach. It was 9 A.M in the morning, and I sat at the dining table with Trish in our very modest looking home. A sigh escaped my lips and I dropped my phone from my hand, letting it lay on the table. I stared down at my food, and simply shook my head at her words, before leaning it to take a sip from the soup she made for us. When I didn't say anything after a while, she called out to me again, “Rory!” I looked up to meet her genuinely worried gaze, “Are you even listening to me?” “I am listening, Trish.” I dropped my spoon, and brushed through my caramel brown hair, “But what can I do about it? Nothing.” After I received that message three days back, the usual fear that normally

After she signed the divorce papers, she made sure to completely vanish her presence from my life. Completely. I couldn't find her anywhere. Not in New York. Not in the damn country, or any neighbouring country. She left me with just one thing, and that was her signature on the divorce papers. I brushed a finger through my hair and absentmindedly tapped my finger on the table in my office as I recalled the sheer pain that had stabbed through me the night I saw her signature on those papers. She wasn't supposed to sign them and leave. That wasn't what I had planned. That wasn't how I thought everything would turn out. But I was happy she had left without looking back. Glad she would be able to live her life hating me. Actually, I was only happy at first. That was until I realized I wasn't fucking dying yet. In fact, the doctor had completely made me believe

♛ Aurora: The afternoon air hit me on the face the moment I stepped out of my car and stared outside the big expanse of land that was empty. The land for the charity project. The site was alive with activity, volunteers in neon vests unloading the supplies, and the framework of what would soon be the community center taking shape. My gaze dropped to the time on my wristwatch, and I brushed my fingers through my hair, before looking up at the empty land which would be something more of buildings and facilities in the next couple of months. Hopefully everything would go smoothly. I took a slow breath, letting the warm air of the afternoon settle into me, calming my nerves. This project was supposed to be the beginning of something fresh, a purpose I could throw myself into without distractions. And I was happy about it, glad it's finally starting. But somehow, I could still feel a small empty feeling swirling my tummy. “Ms. Smith, the materials for the roofing will be a

I looked up and glanced over at the passenger seat where my assistant was sitting. “Chris.” I called out to him, my eyes trailed outside and I glanced over at the couple of people standing outside the gate. I could already tell they were from the press with the way they were dressed. Chris looked up from the rearview mirror, “Do you need anything, sir?” I shook my head at his question, and asked him instead, “Was there later a response?” I didn't need to spell it out, he realized immediately I asked. “No, sir. There was nothing.” “Are you sure?” It sounded odd but it wasn't that I was expecting much. Eventually you'll have to face me and talk.” My voice was low, but there was an edge to it. I just wanted her to listen to me. I wasn't asking for her to immediately forgive me. I just wanted to... ♞ Adrian: “Come in.” Rory’s voice answered from inside. My gaze dropped briefly to her assistant, who knocked and stepped aside. Gabriel's words from earlier rang continuously in my thoughts, and I fought hard to push them aside. Without a word, I pushed the door open and walked inside. The moment I did, my gaze locked on Rory’s. She was sitting behind her desk, a glass of water in hand, a thoughtful expression in her eyes. But the second her eyes met mine, something flickered. Something close to surprise at my sudden presence. I wasn’t sure. A warm feeling settled in my chest, and I spared her a small smile, which she returned, “Adrian.” The smile on my face vanished as quick as it came when I noticed the man sitting across from her, as he turned slightly, just enough for me to get a clear view of his face. My brows creased into a tight frown. What the fuck was he doing here? What was his name again, Nath? Norman? Noahm Actually, I didn't give a damn what his name was. F

Adrian and I had come to the conclusion that it was better to feign ignorance for the meantime till we are able to track every single person connected to the collapse on site. While I didn't completely agree at first, it later dawned on me that it was the only best option we had, at least for now. So, somehow I agreed to act oblivious to it for the next couple of weeks. I had received a call from Giovanni after I left Rory with my Dmitri and Leon yesterday to attend a meeting. She wouldn't be happy that I kept it from her. My throat felt tight as I took a step further, and towards where she was standing, “I promise I can explain.” I dived face first into trying to clear the air. Trish narrowed her eyes at me, “Rory…” her words trailed and she glanced down at the phone again, before looking up. Her eyes watched me carefully, and she dropped my phone to the bed, before letting out a deep restrained breath, “Rory, you need to tell me what's going on.” I swallowed the lump stuck to my throat, and my fingers tightened around my tooth brush which was in my hand. “Talk to me before I jump i

A deep breath escaped my lips and I ran my fingers through my neatly brushed hair, before making my way inside. I hated this house. I didn't like coming here. Neither do I like the memories it pulls coming here. My father’s message had been unclear to me. All it read was: 'Come home, Adrian. There’s something we need to discuss.' When I read the message first thing I woke up this morning, I almost canceled on it. My intention was to cover it up with me being out on a buisness meeting. But at the last moment, I decided to just come around. Besides, I had a certain other business to handle with someone in this house. The butler opened the door the second I stepped onto the porch, like he'd been waiting all day. “Welcome home.” He greeted with a nod, which I returned before he glanced inside, “They’re in the lounge.” I almost asked where else would they be? She was dressed in her usual oversized red sweater and leggings, hair up in a messy bun, clutching a mug that smelled like tea. “Excuse me?” I asked, sitting up a little straighter on the bed. I glanced around the room, before my gaze trailed back to her. Events from last night cut through my thoughts and I closed my eyes for a brief second, trying to recall how it had ended and how I had gotten back into my room. Everything he said was nothing but what he felt. I looked at him deeply, the same way his dark eyes stared at me deeply. His jaw was tight, like he was holding himself back from saying more. His fingers twitched at his thigh. He wasn't comfortable in the silence, he wanted me to say something. Anything. I swallowed the lump stuck in my throat, because something inside me was caving in.
