Chapter 3

Author: Stir-Fried Tomatoes With Prawns
Bertha did not reply to Simon. Disgust crept through every part of her body. She could no longer feel warmth in Simon’s arms, only coldness.

He was such a good actor.

She had witnessed with her own two eyes how he cheated on her. If she had not, perhaps she would have believed him after he worked so hard to explain himself to her. But there were no what-ifs in the world, were there? The sight of his tears just disgusted her, and she found the entire situation ironic.

She pushed Simon away and smiled at Luna.

“Thank you for working so hard to take care of me all this while. Since you’re here, you might as well have a seat and eat with us.”

Simon could sense that there was something off about Bertha, and he signed timidly, “Bertha, are you still mad?”

Bertha shook her head and looked at the beach again.

Simon clapped, and the entire ocean of flowers lit up. A server then pushed a cart over. When he lifted the lid, Bertha found that the tray was not filled with food. Instead, it contained a set of emerald accessories.

Simon had spent a few hundred million dollars on the emeralds during an auction in Paris last month, simply because Bertha had said that she liked them.

She looked up and saw the burning love in Simon’s eyes.

Whenever she saw such gifts in the past, she would be surprised and weep. But all she did in the present was stare at him calmly.

“Bertha, do you remember the first gift I gave you? I gave it to you in this restaurant as well. When I first confessed to you, I gave you an emerald too. I spent half a month researching what you liked. Everyone told me that I would never win your heart and that I was an idiot, but I knew that you were worth the effort.

“When you said that you liked them, I bought them and hired someone to turn them into accessories. Our names are carved into the backs of each one. Once words are carved into something, they won’t disappear, just like how my love for you won’t disappear.”

Luna cast her an envious gaze.

“To think that after all these years, your relationship with Mr. Zimmer would still be so good, Mrs. Zimmer.”

Mockery flashed in Bertha’s eyes. Simon had indeed sworn to love her forever, and he had declared that his love for her would never disappear. All these things were a subject of envy for others, but only Bertha knew that their love had rotted away long ago.

She allowed Simon to put the accessories on her. The emerald made her skin even more radiant, and she supposed that she really did love emeralds. However, emeralds shattered easily, just like love.

While they ate, Simon busied himself cutting steak for her, but she noticed that he would occasionally reach for the car keys beside his hand.

She had never seen those keys before. Each time he pressed down on it, she would hear a faint buzz, along with a faint moan.

Right before her eyes, she saw Luna’s cheeks slowly turn red. Luna gnashed her teeth, as if enduring something. Just when things were about to go out of control, Luna trembled, and her glass of red wine toppled over. It accidentally spilled on Simon’s shirt.

Simon frowned before giving Bertha a troubled look as he signed, “Bertha, I need to clean myself up. I’ve cut your steak for you. Go ahead and eat it.”

He then left.

Soon after, Luna received a call. With the excuse that she had surgery in the hospital, she left the restaurant too.

As for Bertha, she did not eat her steak as Simon had asked. Instead, she got up and went to the other side of the restaurant. Through the floor-to-ceiling window, she saw Luna running strangely toward the car Simon had parked by the road.

Bertha got down quietly. The car window was partially rolled down, and it revealed the people inside. Simon and Luna were pressed flush against each other as they kissed.

Soon, the car started shaking.

Simon pinned Luna against the seat and said in a passion-filled voice, “Didn’t I satisfy you earlier? I told you before not to show up that often in front of Bertha.”Luna giggled wantonly. Her moans grew louder as she crooned, “It’s your fault for putting that thing in. It was so tough for me…”“It’s because you’re insatiable. I’ll satisfy you this time, but after this, respect my boundaries and stop causing trouble in front of Bertha.”Bertha hid behind a tree beside the car. Even though she already knew about Simon and Luna, her heart still hurt. Before she realized it, tears filled her eyes, and the sounds of their passion grew louder. Sometimes, it sounded like water striking stone. At other times, it sounded like splashes. She clenched her teeth to silence herself. She tried to leave a few times, but for some reason, she could not find the strength to move her legs. Pain filled her entire body. With trembling hands, she took her phone out and pointed it at the car as she pre

As she saw the panic and fear on Simon’s face, Bertha wanted to laugh. If she left, he and Luna could finally be an official couple, no?That would be perfect for his wish, right? Why was he pretending to be all scared?Bertha spoke calmly. “I’m leaving after lunch. I’ve been really bored just sitting in the house all the time, and I got tired of some of my clothes. I’m going to be donating them since I won’t be wearing them anymore.”Simon sighed in relief, and the worry in his heart finally faded away. He smiled with a sense of ease as if he was feeling lucky about something. But when he saw Bertha’s flat gaze, he still felt anxious and knelt down to apologize to her. “I’m sorry, Bertha. It’s all my fault. Something suddenly went wrong with a contract, and I forgot to tell you because I was really flustered about it. I shouldn’t have left you alone in the restaurant. I know that you’re mad. You can hit me or yell at me, just don’t scare me, please. I’m really afraid of losing

Perhaps God had taken pity on her and restored her hearing. Simon was still pretending to be a loving husband, but he did not know that Bertha had already learned about everything. She knew what he had been doing at night over the past few days. She also knew that his love could not win against the temptation of lust. Simon probably noticed that something was off about Bertha, so he left earlier with her. When they got into the car, his phone began ringing. He took one look at the screen and signed to her that it was a call from his company. Then, he answered the phone right in front of her face. Luna called Simon’s name sweetly. After he listened to her for about three minutes, he hung up and gave Bertha an apologetic look. “Sorry, Bertha. There’s a really urgent meeting in the company, and I need to go back to chair it.”Bertha did not expose him. She just smiled and nodded. “Your company’s important. Go ahead and do your thing.”Simon reached out to pat Bertha’s head, bu

On the day she recovered, Bertha did not see Simon. During the course of twenty-four hours, he only sent her one message. [Bertha, I’ve contacted a doctor from abroad to install man-made cochleas into your ears.]She did not answer because Luna had sent her another photo last night. It was a photo of her getting a consultation at the Gynaecology Department. Simon had personally paid for the consultation. [Bertha, my morning sickness was horrible yesterday, and Simon was incredibly worried. I’ll ask him to keep you company tomorrow.]She could sense just how smug Luna was just from those words alone. Bertha ignored them and just packed up. Meanwhile, she confirmed the procedure for her fake death with the person on the other end of the phone.Over the past few days, Luna had uploaded posts that only Bertha could see at a set hour each day. There were photos of Simon putting a ring on her finger, one of Simon designing a wedding dress for her, and a photo of them making love

Simon drove to Luna’s apartment while his heart raced. He was getting a bad feeling. When he arrived at her apartment building, he did not even have the patience to wait for the elevator and ran up to the twentieth floor. As he gasped for breath, he opened the door, only to find her laughing in some silk pajamas. She was watching a show on her tablet while sitting on the couch. He understood what had happened right then. All her talk about her stomach hurting and how she was feeling nauseous were lies. He frowned, and displeasure rose in him. “You’ve been far too arrogant lately. I’ve been keeping you company over the past half a month, and I haven’t had time to be with Bertha. I couldn’t even make plans for our anniversary. And here you are, lying to me about your baby?”At that, all of Luna’s delight turned into sad tears that rolled down her cheeks. Her pajamas swayed around her and made her look like a pitiful flower. She threw herself into Simon’s arms and said, “I just m

Luna watched as Simon’s car pulled away. Remembering that he had left her behind for Bertha, she clenched her fists in indignation. She was so angry that she gnashed her teeth together. She took her phone out again and sent another message to Bertha. [Bertha, if you know your place, leave Simon. He doesn’t need a deaf person as his wife.]After that, she happily hummed and went upstairs to continue watching her show. Simon sped back. Even though he got caught in the evening traffic, he still managed to reduce his trip to only forty minutes, when it was supposed to take one hour. When he opened the door to his house, he could not find Bertha anywhere. In the end, he stopped in front of the bedroom door. Assuming that she was sleeping inside, Simon took a deep breath before he opened the door to enter. He removed his shoes and walked barefoot on the floorboards. Worried that he would wake her, he walked on tiptoes as he turned on the flashlight app on his phone. But when he saw

[I wish you happiness, Simon.]He read through the email, and when he read the last line, his mind went blank. Happiness? However, he was only happy when he was with her!Simon read through the email again, but it had nothing else apart from a video. He opened it and heard familiar moans. He saw his face, and he could not watch it any longer. He turned off the computer with a forceful jab.He wrote a reply to the email, but after sending it, he found that the email address did not exist. He stared at the divorce agreement in his hands and felt like he was hyperventilating. He was not going to sign the papers. From the moment he confessed to Bertha, he was ready to be with her forever. He was not going to give up halfway through or let her leave. Simon searched through every room, including the backyard, but all he saw was an empty lawn and an empty walk-in closet. Bertha was nowhere to be found. He could not even find their wedding photo or her wedding dress. Feeling broken

However, she was not picking up. All she did was leave behind a signed divorce agreement before vanishing into thin air. What was this? A sign of her disappointment?Simon did not dare think further into this. He picked up his phone again and called his secretary. “Mobilize all of our men and bring Bertha back to me.”He would not be able to relax unless he received news about Bertha. He did not know where she had gotten those photos and videos from. As for those messages, they sounded so provocative and confident. But he had wiped out all possible signs of trouble, so who could have possibly sent those things to Bertha?Right then, he thought of the only person who could have possibly done this—Luna. He turned on the computer again. Just as he had expected, he saw that the profile was the exact same as Luna’s. He had ignored it earlier. “She must have a death wish…”He glared at the woman in the photo and wanted to drag her over to teach her a lesson immediately. He had alr

The road was covered in snow a long time ago. When she came over earlier, she felt cold, but on her way back, the winter no longer seemed as scary. Samuel was holding her hand, and his palm was warm. The street was full of people, but they said nothing to each other. Occasionally, Bertha would look up and meet Samuel’s gaze. She could tell that his gaze was different from before. In the past, it was as fierce as fire, but at present, it was as calm as water. “You were in the third year of high school, and it was the winter holidays when we walked together like this as well. At that time, the snow landed on your eyes, and you cried. You even held my hand and asked me to blow it away for you.”Bertha remembered it too. These memories were the few moments in the first half of her life when she felt alive. However, she remained quiet, and Samuel knew why she was acting this way. She was still angry at him for leaving without a word. “I didn’t lie to you on purpose. At that time, m

Once they walked a distance away, Bertha let go of Samuel’s hand. He did not understand why and wanted to hold her hand again, but one question from Bertha made him stop. “Why did you lie to me in the past?”Samuel was stunned. He bowed his head and dared not meet Bertha’s eyes. He just whispered, “It’s pretty late. Should I send you back to your hotel?”“Just feigning ignorance, huh? Tell me. Why did you lie to me?!” Bertha shouted at the top of her lungs. Samuel could tell that she was crying. Her tears fell on his wrist, and he looked up in a panic. It was only then that he realized Bertha’s face was covered in tears. Feeling anxious, he hurried to comfort her, but he refused to talk about what had happened in the past. Honestly, he was not trying to hide it. He simply did not know where to start and what to say. The first to lose her patience was Bertha. “Enough, Simon. I have no time to argue with you. Do you really think that you love me that much? If you truly did, you wouldn’t have cheated on me. The essence of love is loyalty, but ours was full of lies. Everyone in our friend group knew about your relationship with Luna, but they kept it from me. What am I, then?“You said that I didn’t give you a chance? Can you swear you never noticed that anything was off whenever I acted strangely? You ignored my feelings all the time, so how can you call that love? You’re the one who slept with Luna in the hospital in the name of seeking treatment for me. You’re the one who slept with Luna in the car on my birthday. You could even talk about all the dirty things you did with Luna while peeling grapes for me. “If you had even considered my feelings for one second from the get-go, would you have done those things? Even now, you haven’t tried to offer me an explanation.“Simon, I don’t need anyone

  • Love Never Wilts in a Moment   Chapter 21

Samuel was older than Bertha by three years. When Bertha became a high school student, he had already gotten into the university of his dreams. His teachers in high school described him as a bona fide model student. They were supposed to have nothing to do with each other, but during the semester break of his first year in university, Samuel went back to visit his teacher. He got there just in time to see Bertha getting cornered in the washroom and being bullied. Since he was a boy, he was not supposed to barge into the ladies’ washroom. But for some reason, perhaps out of a sense of justice, he charged in shamelessly and yelled at her bullies. Even after so many years had passed, Samuel could still remember the first time he met Bertha. Her head was covered in smelly toilet paper as she cowered in the dirty washroom. She was wearing ill-fitting sportswear, but her eyes were bright, like water. When he reached out to her, Bertha grabbed his hand hesitantly but tightly. From then on

  • Love Never Wilts in a Moment   Chapter 20

Since they were both men, Simon could quickly sense that Samuel’s gaze on Bertha was not pure. There was even a hint of possessiveness in it. Despite that, Bertha was not averse to it when she stood beside him. Simon had spent years trying to break down the walls to Bertha’s heart, and he even broke a leg in the process! But with just a smile, Samuel managed to get Bertha to look at him with a soft gaze?! Simon clenched his fists tightly. Jealousy burned in his heart so wildly that it made him lose his mind, but he still put on a calm front as he greeted Bertha.“Bertha, is that your friend?”He had been apart from Bertha for a year. When the person he missed dearly finally appeared before him, even his voice trembled. He dared not speak loudly because he was worried that he would scare her, and he was also worried that this was all a dream. However, the moment Bertha saw Simon’s face, she took a step back. She was scowling, and she seemed wary. When she noticed that he was abo

After Bertha left Paris, she did not return to Switzerland. Instead, she went to Germany to look for Emma. At the same time, Simon saw Bertha’s designs in Centville. Since he knew Bertha’s handwriting by heart and knew all the details she loved to put in her designs, he knew that she was the designer. The sight of the buttercup after the name, “Daffodil,” further strengthened his belief. He ordered his secretary to hire a hacker to locate the IP address of the person who had uploaded the designs online. “Mr. Zimmer, the designs came from Germany.”Once the secretary found the location, he was really excited. After all, ever since Bertha left, Simon had constantly been listless. He knew that Bertha did not like the smell of alcohol, so he destroyed all the wine cellars at home. He also worked day and night to numb himself. He had passed out a few times from working nonstop overnight, and the secretary only realized he was unconscious when he came to work the following day. Upon landing in Switzerland, Bertha headed to the apartment that the fake death agency had gotten for her to put her luggage down. She loved the scenery here. It was as beautiful as a fairy tale, and it would provide her with an endless stream of inspiration. Even though many years had passed, her passion for design had not faded in the slightest. With pen and paper in hand, she went to all of Switzerland’s cafes. The people here really knew how to enjoy life. Half a month after she arrived, Bertha became close friends with her neighbors, and they invited her to go on a trip with them to Paris. After Bertha lost her hearing, she stopped attending any fashion shows, so she nodded. She packed up that very night and took all of her drafts with her. Just when she was about to forget about Simon, she suddenly received a notification from her bank. Someone had transferred ten thousand dollars to her account. While the bank account was registered under her name, Simon could see wh

Since Simon never saw Bertha’s body, he did not believe that the person who died in the car crash was her. His instincts told him that Bertha was alive and somewhere in the world. He refused to believe that Bertha would leave him alone. Even though her information had been wiped and his family kept pressuring him to tell the world about her death, he never relented. He still told everyone that Bertha was out on a trip. Meanwhile, he paid all of the private detectives in the country handsomely to look for Bertha. If they could not find her in the country, they were to look for her abroad. He was going to scour every inch of the world until he found her and brought her back. His efforts were not in vain. Two months later, his secretary told him that he had received information about Bertha. A driver from a ride-hailing service mentioned that he had met Bertha and she had left a deep impression on him. It was the first time he had ever gotten a passenger from a residential villa. I

Bertha’s plane ran into turbulence, and it was forced to land in Germany. But that was fine. She still had some savings and the credit card Simon had given to her. Even so, she was worried that he would discover her whereabouts if he checked the card’s usage records. So, she was not in a hurry to go to Switzerland. Instead, she stayed in Germany and waited for the airline to make arrangements for another flight to Switzerland. In the meantime, she decided to travel around Germany for a while. She never had the chance to truly enjoy life before. Before she was eighteen, her life was centered around her broken family. They drained her youth away, and she had thought that if she contributed enough to the family, her parents and brother would love her a little more. However, the brutal reality destroyed her time and again. When God took her hearing away, he also made her remember the pain forever. She sealed off her heart and decided to never open it up to anyone else ever again.Ye
