“Selena,” Ryan said with a flat tone, his voice cold with warning, “this isn’t the place or time for your drama.”
Selena’s eyes flicked toward him briefly before settling back on Emma. “Oh, come on, Ryan. We both know I’m just stating what everyone’s thinking.” She raised an eyebrow, looking Emma up and down with a disgusting look. “You two just don’t seem to fit. But I guess... people go through phases, right? I’ll just be here when it all falls apart.”
Emma’s heart raced, but she kept calm and refused to show any reaction to Selena’s hurtful words. “I believe it hurts to be referred to as the past, like I could hear people gossip and refer to you as ‘was Ryan’s girlfriend,’ but guess what? I am the present; deal with it, Selena.”
Selena's smile seemed forced, her eyes sparkling with malice. "Touché," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. She stepped closer, lowering her tone. "Let's be honest, sweetheart. You think you can keep Ryan's attention for long? Everyone knows we're meant to be together. You're just a temporary distraction."
Ryan's and Emma's eyes met in a knowing glance, their smiles mirroring each other as they gazed at Selena, if only she knew what was ahead. “Well, let’s see how it goes,” Ryan responded, still smiling mischievously.
Selena's eyes narrowed, sensing Ryan was hiding something. But before she could ask more, Mia's laughter filled the room. Emma turned and saw James leaning into Mia, whispering something in her ear that made her laugh even louder. Mia’s bright smile, paired with the obvious chemistry between her and James, was a welcome distraction from Selena’s venom. Emma felt a flicker of relief seeing her friend enjoying herself.
Ryan, sensing Emma’s unease, leaned down slightly, whispering in her ear, “Do you want to go somewhere else? We don’t need to stay here.”
Emma shook her head, forcing a small smile. “No, it’s fine. I’m fine.”
But she wasn’t fine. The pressure of pretending was exhausting. Surrounded by the crowded ballroom, Emma felt trapped by staring eyes and hushed whispers. How much longer can I keep up this act? she thought.
"I would be right back; let me use the restroom," Emma said, removing her arm out of Ryan's arms. She needed some space, away from the tension, from Selena, and from the overwhelming party atmosphere. Emma stepped into the restroom, grateful for the sudden quiet. At the sink, she leaned against the cool marble and gazed into the mirror.
The woman looking back at her appeared composed, elegant even. But underneath, Emma felt like she was unraveling. She couldn’t let Selena or anyone else see how close she was to breaking.
Breathe, she reminded herself. “Breath Emma”
Emma's shoulders stiffened as Selena entered, her smile gleaming with malice.
"Not now," Emma breathed, with frustration written all over her face.
Emma turned to face her fully, her guard up. “I don’t have time for this, Selena.”
Selena’s smile widened. "I don't know what you’re up to, but I have been digging into you and found something quite revealing.” Selena said, a mischievous smile spreading across her face. "I know you are up to something."
Emma felt the spring of anxiety in her stomach, but she kept her face straight."I'm not interested in your discoveries," Emma replied calmly.
“Not even if it’s about your brother?” Selena’s voice was sharp now, a vicious gleam in her eyes. “Lukas, isn’t it? Poor thing. I hear he’s not doing so well.”
Emma’s blood ran cold, but she held Selena’s gaze, refusing to give her the satisfaction of a reaction. “Leave Lukas out of this.”
Selena moved closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're hiding something, and I'll find out what keeps Ryan under your spell." Her eyes locked onto Emma's. "No one conceals their past this well. When I uncover your secret..."
Selena's pause hung in the air. Emma's heart raced, but she stood firm. "Go ahead and investigate, Selena. You won't find anything that matters."
Selena's smirk revealed her pleasure in the confrontation. “We’ll see about that.”
With one final glance, Selena turned and exited the restroom, leaving Emma standing there, shaken but determined. She couldn’t let Selena rattle her. Not tonight.
Emma took a few deep breaths, picked up a wipe from her bag, and wiped her face. She sighed and re-entered the ballroom. She searched for Ryan, craving his reassuring presence. But her gaze froze on him. Ryan stood confidently, captivating the entire room's attention.
“Uuh everybody?” Ryan’s voice echoed, the room was silent; everybody’s eyes were fixed on him. “Yeah,” he continued.
“I’m sorry, I just need a few moments of your time.” Emma was standing close to Mia, both looking surprised. Mia couldn’t help the tension but asked Emma, “What’s going on?”
“I don’t know,” Emma responded, looking confused as well.
Emma's eyes met Ryan’s eyes, and her heart skipped a beat. His expression was warm, reassuring, but there was something else there. Something intense.
“What was he doing?” She muttered to herself
“I just have a little birthday surprise for my grandfather. Ryan spoke out loudly now, his focus on his grandfather as he continued his speech.
“For the longest time, my grandfather kept telling me to settle down and how there are more important things to life, and for the whole time, I didn’t know what he was talking about.”
The crowd giggled at Ryan’s jokes as he continued. “Until I met Emma,” he spoke, pointing at Emma, his voice clear and unwavering.
Emma froze. The air in the room suddenly felt too thick, too heavy. No, he can’t be...
Ryan reached into his pocket, and the sight of the small velvet box in his hand made Emma’s heart stop. Time seemed to slow down as realization hit her with full force.
No... not like this. Not now.
“Emma Lawson,” Ryan said softly, his eyes never leaving hers as he knelt down in front of everyone. The entire room held its breath as he opened the box, revealing a stunning diamond ring.
Oh my God, Emma’s mind screamed. She wasn’t ready for this. Yes, it was part of the plan, the contract, but not like this. He would have prepared her mind for this.
“Will you marry me?” Ryan’s voice was steady, filled with sincerity, but all Emma could hear was the roaring in her ears.
The room was silent. Every face turned toward her, expectant, waiting.
Emma’s world spun. Emma felt overwhelmed, everything hitting her at once—Ryan's proposal, their complicated past, and their uncertain future.
Moan harder, baby, yeah, yeah, it's coming, yeah, aah…Ryan let out a loud moan of pleasure as he playfully spanked the lady he was fucking, admiring her big ass. With a sheepish smile on his face. He felt a brief sense of power and control. It was fleeting, but he was used to that. As he laid on the bed to take a deep breath from the moment. ‘Care for another round?’ She asked, and he sheepishly smiled and stood up from the bed without a word. He plans to go wash himself up and then ride her hard one more time. Just as he was about to step into the bathroom, the sudden beep of his phone halted him.‘Hmm,’ Ryan sighs, nodding his head, tempted to ignore it. He wasn't ready to be distracted at this point; he had another round to go with this sexy lady. But doubt crept into his thoughts. It could be work you fool, You don't joke with work. He hesitantly picked up his phone to find a message from his secretary: "Good afternoon, Mr. Miller. I've been attempting to contact you."”I hear
Chapter 2Emma sat in silence at Dr. Shawn's office, her heart pounding as he delivered the news. Her mind was lost in thoughts; yes, she knew her brother’s situation wasn't getting better, but to hear that he wasn’t responding to the chemotherapy treatment was disheartening. His voice was calm but heavy carrying the weight of what he had to say.“Emma, I’m afraid the chemotherapy isn’t working as we’d hoped,” Dr. Shawn began. His eyes were full of emotions, showing sympathy. “However, there’s an experimental clinical trial being developed by a group of scientists. The success rate looks promising, but…” His voice trailed off.Emma’s breath hitched. “But what, Dr. Shawn?”“They’re looking for sponsors. Funding is crucial to get this trial started, and even then, only a select number of patients will be accepted,” he explained.Emma’s face fell, and suddenly the room fell tiny. Her chest got all tight and worried. “Please, Doctor, you have to make sure my brother gets a spot. He deserv
Chapter 3Emma being lost in her thoughts, the world around her seemed to freeze, every option, every choice narrowing to this one moment. How could it come to this?Despite desperately needing a job, this opportunity wasn't her ideal solution. However, the prospect of $350,000 was enticing; it would help them bounce back financially. She would be able to provide for food and drugs in the meantime while they wait for the clinical trials to kick off.“Emma, are you there?” Aunt Jane snapped her out of her thoughts as she could sense the silence from the phone. “Ooh yes, I am; this was her chance to save her brother.I just wasn’t expecting this. Emma, just come over to my place now so we could talk about it, ok?” “Alright,” Emma responded. “I will be on my way now.” Hmmm, she exhaled deeply. ‘This would be a whole new experience, as she never thought people were still into this. Well, rich people, I guess, have all the money to spend on crazy things.’ But now she had no choice, did sh
Emma felt the weight of the signed contract, its implications looming like a dark cloud. In the taxi, Emma gripped the papers tightly, her hands trembling. She gazed out the window, but her mind was consumed by Lukas and the daunting task ahead. Her mind clouded with thoughts. Telling him she'd sold herself for his sake? No way. He would never understand; instead, he'd freak out and blame himself. Lying wasn't her style, but this truth was too ugly.As the taxi pulled up, Emma ran through her story. She'd tell Lukas she landed a great-paying job, leaving out the whole marriage thing. At least not for now until she feels he’s mentally and emotionally ready. She paid the driver, took a quick breath outside her apartment, and went in.Lukas slouched on the couch, flipping channels with a bored expression. Then, seeing Emma, he straightened up and brightened. "Hey," he said softly. “How’d the meeting go?”Emma forced a smile, trying to sound casual. “I got the job,” she said, holding the
The air in the lounge was thick with tension, and Emma could feel the weight of Ryan's gaze, a mixture of concern and curiosity. The playful atmosphere had evaporated, replaced by an undercurrent of hostility as Alexander Dumas stood before them, his presence a looming shadow. All the attention was now focused on her.“We’ve never met; I will remember a bully like you, Emma fired back.” Ryan and the others began to laugh at Emma’s comebacks; Ryan specifically was pleased with how she handled the moment.Alexander moved a step closer to Emma, amazed by her confidence to talk to him in such a manner. Point a finger to her, he replied, “Lady with the guts, eeh.”Noticing the tension, Ryan moved closer and used his hand to block Alexander from pointing at Emma. “I think it’s time for you to go, Dumas. Ryan said, this time with a deep tone. and a strong face expressing he’s no longer welcome there.“Interesting choice of company, Miller. You’ve really changed since I last saw you,” Alexan
The voice of the mysterious woman echoed through the mansion as Ryan held Emma’s hand tightly. Emma could feel the pains of his grip, but they were all distracted and stunned looking at the figure standing by the doorway. Emma’s eyes met Ryan, and his facial expression showed that he was pissed at the figure before him. Who is she? And what must she have done to ignite such rage in Ryan’s eyes? The woman took a slow, deliberate step into the room, her black hair cascading over her shoulders, nearly brushing the hem of her sleek designer top. Her cold blue eyes scanned the room, finally locking onto Ryan with a smug smile. Her skin seemed to glow, almost unnaturally perfect, radiating the confidence of someone who had always gotten her way. Emma swallowed hard, her admiration quickly turning into dread. There was no mistaking the power this woman wielded, not just in wealth but in her presence. The air in the room thickened, and Emma could feel the shiver run down her spine as Selena
“Oh my gosh, babe, is this your grandfather that you have been telling me about?” Emma asked, looking all surprised and curious. Her voice was trembling just enough to sound genuine, even though she was nervous but trying to appear calm.Ryan was amazed by Emma’s moves. “A kiss?” He whispered and smiled to himself. He wouldn’t have thought of something like that, but it worked. But immediately he got the acting signal and responded, “Grandpa, you didn’t tell me you were coming over today. You startled me.”Ryan’s grandfather wasn’t paying attention to Ryan; instead, he looked at Emma, observing her closely. He knew he had for sure never seen her before.“Who is this young lady?” He asked interestedly.“Oh, this is Emma, my girlfriend.” Ryan replied with a smile on his face. “But Ryan, you never told me you had a girlfriend.” Ryan's face lightened up; this was the moment for him to play smart in order for his grandfather to believe him. There was no way he was going to fuck up. “Gran
The door to the mansion swung open as Ryan and Emma walked in, both smiling like they had won a gold medal. Ryan walked into the kitchen exhausted as he sighed, tossing the car keys onto the counter."Finally home," he said, smiling, after the long hospital trip to get Emma's hand treated.“I'm really impressed by how you handled things today," Ryan said, his expression softening. "You handled my grandfather perfectly, thinking on your feet like that." Emma managed a tired smile, still rubbing her bandaged hand. “I didn’t have much of a choice, did I? Your grandfather nearly had us cornered. I had to think on my feet.” Emma let out a worry sigh, though this time her face was serious as she continued. “We can’t afford to jeopardize this plan; we need to be in our A game all the time.”Ryan chuckled, stepping closer to her. “Well, you did more than just think. You saved us. My grandfather totally bought the story. He thinks we’re legit.” His eyes softened as he reached out to brush a s
