SARAH

I stood anxiously by the corridor of the hospital. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. I had been pacing back and forth for what felt like hours, and my mind was consumed with worry for Lilian. Lilian had been rushed to the hospital earlier that day, and the uncertainty of her condition was torturing me.

Walking restlessly back and forth, my eyes darted towards the entrance anxiously, praying for any news about Lilian. The corridor was bustling with activity; doctors and nurses were hurriedly going about their duties, but I felt completely helpless.

Suddenly, as if being pulled back to reality, I felt a strong hand grab my own. Startled, I turned to see a woman standing beside me. Without a word, the woman shook my hand firmly; her grip was tight.

"I need you to understand something, young lady," she said, her voice strained. "If anything happens to my daughter, I won't take it lightly.

I was surprised at the woman's words. Like, who the hell was s

I asked, raising the napkin Sarah got in the kitchen before the incident."That's Jake's napkin. What are you doing with it?" The surprise was evident in her eyes and the way she stared at m

SARAH What a life I ended up with! I had always dreamed of a happy and peaceful marriage, but instead, I got stuck with a man who brings nothing but trouble. I sat in front of my dresser, looking at myself in the mirror. The reflection staring back at me was of a sad and struggling woman. I couldn't believe how my life had turned upside down in just a year. I wondered if things would ever get better. Suddenly, I heard a noise at the door. Someone was trying to get in, but I had locked it. "It's Leo, please open the door," his voice came through. "I don't want to talk to you right now, please go away," I replied calmly. Leo kept trying to get me to open up, but I refused. I went to bed without eating dinner and spent the entire night tossing and turning, unable to sleep. The next day, my father-in-law and Lilian's mother were going to the hospital to sign some papers before Lilian's surgery. I had prayed all night, hoping that everything would go well. ********* I went back to

SARAH"Why would you want to end it all, Sarah?" My cousin Emma questioned, carefully scrutinizing my body for any signs of harm."Listen, my dear, this world is far too sweet to let it slip away. Live as if your troubles don't exist," Emma insisted.I chuckled softly at her words."But Emma, there's nothing left for me to enjoy. My life is a chaotic mess, just look at me," I responded calmly."Even amidst the chaos, Sarah, it's never a valid reason to terminate your existence. There's no logical explanation for it!" Emma raised her voice. She stared at me, her eyes showing a glimmer of anger. If I were younger, I wouldn't put it past her to reprimand me for my insanity."Oh, please, Emma. I just needed some fresh air. I would never contemplate taking my own life. So don't get worked up about trivial matters." My words were meant to reassure her."Trivial matters? Is that what you call this?" She rolled her eyes in disbelief.Suddenly, Leo entered the room, hold

SARAH "I can't leave, Mom. I still have some things to take care of. Leo's place is close by anyways, so it's convenient for me to stay there," Lilian tried to explain to her mother, but her words fell on deaf ears."I refuse to believe that you've become so foolish ever since you started hanging out with that foolish brother of yours! You are not going back to that house, and that's final," her mother's words were authoritative. How did it come to this?Just moments after I arrived to visit Lilian, her mother barged in. Upon seeing me with her daughter, she flew into a rage and accused me again of poisoning Lilian. Insisting that Lilian must go home with her, she became increasingly aggressive.Lilian attempted to get up from her bed, but the pain from her recent surgery held her down."I am not a child anymore, Mom! I am a young woman with my own life to live. You cannot tell me what to do in this situation," Lilian opposed."Do you see what you've caused? As i

SARAH As I approached the house, a strange feeling began to settle within me. Emma, my cousin who would spend her evenings glued to the TV, was nowhere to be found. It felt as though the house had transformed into a graveyard.Ignoring the unsettling atmosphere, I made my way up the stairs. I could faintly hear whispers coming from Emma's room. She was probably on a phone call. As I approached, the door swung open, revealing a startled Emma."Hello, Cousin," she greeted, catching her breath and attempting to conceal her surprise."Where are you going?" I asked in curiosity. She stumbled over her words, trying to form a response. "Uhh... I'm just going to grab something from the nearby store. I'll be back in no time." I could see right through her lies. She started to rush past me down the stairs, but I held her back. "Are you going without your card or any cash?" I questioned. Her eyes widened in realization. I opened the door and without uttering a word, Emma, rushed past me and headed straight to her room. Ignoring her, I threw myself on the couch and turned on the news. Moments later, Sarah soon joined me. "Just stay calm." She said to me. As if on cue, Emma came down the stairs like a raging lion. "Something is missing from my room!" she shouted, accusingly eyeing both of us. "Emma, it's past 9 p.m. Why are you yelling like a lunatic? What's gotten into you?" I fired back, annoyed. Sarah intervened, trying to dig deeper into the matter. "What exactly are you looking for, Emma?" "It's, uh...it's just..." Emma stammered, failing to provide a clear answer. "It doesn't have a name? Nothing specific?" I pressed further. "Forget it, it's not important anyway," Emma snapped, attempting to walk away. But Sarah's words stopped her in her tracks. "Could it be the

LILIANCora arrived at the hospital early the next morning, insisting that I go home with her. But I stood my ground convincing her that I wasn't done with what I had come there to do."You can stay in a hotel then," Cora said, still trying hard to convince me."No, not when my brother's house is just close by " I shook my head in disagreement. She however gave up, seeing that I was not going to do as she wanted. We arrived at Leo's house together, with Cora only coming along to ensure my safety. As we pulled up to the gate in her car, Leo emerged and greeted us warmly. Unsurprisingly, Cora rolled her eyes at him, clearly still harboring her dislike for Leo. "Welcome back Lily" Leo welcomed as he disappeared into the kitchen and returned with two glasses of steaming hot tea. "Please drink up, the both of you. Breakfast will soon be ready" he said with all smiles."Where is your wife?" I asked, sipping the tea as I hadn't seen her since I arrived."She still s

She turned to me with a scowl and snapped, “What does it look like I’m doing? I’m just fixing the drip pipe.”I walked into the ward, crossing my arms. “Since when did you become a doctor or a nurse to know how to handle drips?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.Emily shot me a glare and sat back gently on the chair, her hand resting protectively on her pregnant belly. Caro, who had been right behind me, quickly walked past me over to Emily. She grabbed Emily’s hand and held it tightly.“What are you hiding under your sleeve?” Caro demanded.Emily yanked her hand away and snapped, “I’m not hiding anything! "Please," I choked out to the nurse who held me back from following him."Please, I need to be with him."She gave my arm a gentle squeeze. "He's in the best hands, ma'am. We'll do our very best." But her words were drowned out by the roaring in my ears, the fear that clawed at my throat. What if their very best was not enough? The nurse left me then, and I crumpled to the floor, burying my face in my hands. Suddenly, a voice pierced through my despair. "Leo! Where's Leo?"I looked up and saw Emily. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with panic as she ran towards my direction. Her gaze fell on me and then on the bloodstains that marred my clothes. Her hand flew to her mouth to to hold herself from screaming as she stood motionless, staring at me with tears in her eyes. For a moment, I almost felt sorry for her. Emma. Just the name sent a shiver down my spine. Not because she was scary, not exactly. But because of what she was capable of. What she threatened to do to Caro if I didn't follow her instructions to the letter. "Come alone, Sarah," her text message had read, the words burning themselves into my memory. "And don't even think about calling the police. You know what's at stake."The memory of Raya's kidnapping, years ago, flashed in my mind. The same feeling of helplessness, the same knot of fear twisting in my gut. But this time, it was my own daughter on the line. SARAH One morning, as I was getting ready for work, my daughter Caro showed up in her nightie, totally out of the blue. Normally, she'd be getting ready for school at this time. "Mum, I'll be going for a special trip today," Caro announced. "A trip?" I asked, confused. "Yes, it's an excursion for my class. Didn't I tell you about it a few weeks ago? And I'm sure they announced it in school too," Caro explained. Suddenly, it all came back to me. The principal had indeed mentioned something about the final year students going on an excursion. My head was already full with worry. She wouldn't blame for for being forgetful. "Alright, whatever," I managed to say, not bothering to inquire further about the details. I figured it was a school-related activity, so it should be safe enough to let her go. With that thought in mind, I rushed off to school as I was almost running late. I was in the middle of teaching my students when my phone rang, disrupting the class. It was the principal

It seemed like my words fell on deaf ears. I had no choice but to visit Leo at his office.I walked into his office nervously, with my heart pounding. I couldn't believe it had come to this. I had to confront him face-to-face and find a way to change his mind.In my best suit, a gift from Leo on my last birthday, I anxiously waited outside his office. Leo had been preoccupied with other people and made me wait. I wondered what to expect - the sympathetic Leo I've always known or a love-sick man? To my surprise, a cold

"Don't worry about the kids, they'll come around," Mother-in-law said, clearly pleased with what Leo had said. My heart was heavy, my mind raced, and my thoughts were chaotic. Was Leo really talking about me? I couldn't even find the words to speak. "Why did you do that?" Lucas, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up. "What?" Leo pretended not to know. He looked at Emily, who was still standing beside Leo, but she seemed too clueless to understand his stare. "Leave now or you'll hate me forever!" Lucas's voice boomed, and she ran out without hesitation. "Why did you do that? I asked again!" Lucas demanded, now turning to face Leo. "He simply stated the truth," Mother-in-law defended Leo's actions. "What stupid truth?" Lucas yelled. "Even in front of the kids?" Leo walked out on us without saying a si
