"Of all the clubs, why do I have to help the Readers’ club?"
Hera’s slight tantrum made her best friend laugh at her reaction. Both of them know how outgoing Hera is, and reading books is not in her nature. According to her, that hobby is so bland and quiet.
While her favorite hobby is singing or jamming, thus her club is the Music club. She's also the reason Cyril joined that club, because she wanted him to, but also because she knows that he loves to sing.
"Are you two sophomores?"
Hearing the question, both students turned around and looked at the guy who turned out to be their homeroom teacher, Mr. McDonald.
"Yes sir, we are," Cyril said for both him and Hera.
"What are you still doing here?" Mr. McDonald pointed towards the campus grounds. "There are more students coming, hurry and help in your booths."
The command made the two students walk out of the campus lobby. They separated ways when they arrived at the main pathway since the Reader's club is in the further back of the campus. While the Board Games club is somewhere in the frontal area.
Just a while ago, Cyril was truly happy because he knows how torture the Reader's club would be for Hera. However, as he got closer and closer to his own booth, he realized he was going to get something worse.
First, because he is not with his best friend. Second, because he is also unfamiliar with the booth that he's going to assist. And last, because it is beside the Music club.
And the first thing that he heard from them when he got to his assigned booth was. "Hey, down low’s has arrived."
Then they were laughing at him. All of them, to be exact. But it was normal for Cyril, he knew that from that day he confessed to the Music club members onwards, they will be on his ass forever. Mocking him and bullying him for solely being who he is.
"What brought you here?" the girl from the front desk of the BG club asked.
"Mr. McDonald assigned here me."
"Okay, you can help give some flyers to the freshmen who will approach our booth," the girl said before pointing at one side of the booth. "You can ask him about the task and he will help you. His name is Ken."
"Thank you."
Cyril immediately walked towards the student whom the front desk girl told her to approach.
He is tall, skinny, and looks just like the typical high school nerd. Maybe because he really is a nerd, a board game nerd.
"Hello," Cyril greeted in a friendly manner.
It immediately caught the other guy's attention and made him turn to where Cyril is. Then he fixed his clothes and made himself presentable before he handed a flyer to the younger.
"Welcome to Board Games Club. This is the club where you will get to learn and enjoy all the board games America could offer, starting from scrabble to..."
As soon as the guy started speaking, Cyril only panicked inside. He doesn't know what to do or what to say. The feeling just occurred to him, just like when a parent asked their kid to order some pizza over the phone. It was that kind of scary feeling.
"Hey," Ken snapped his fingers in front of Cyril. And hopefully was able to bring him out of his trance. "I'm asking, what's your name?"
"Uh-Uhm. I'm Cyril Queens," Cyril introduced himself. "I'm a sophomore and the girl in the front told me to approach you."
At the mention of the head of the club, Ken looked towards her location. Then he turned around to get something from the table behind him. Afterward, he gave a pile of at least 20 pieces of flyers to Cyril.
"My name is Ken Heinz. I'm a junior student here, and this is my club. Had been for 2 years now, and I'm really proud to belong here since I met the most amazing people in this club." Ken introduced himself.
Hearing those words made Cyril feel like this club is really a family. Like they wouldn't leave you behind or make you feel worthless like his own club. It isn't really the club as a whole, but just those people that turned their backs on him, those friends who became his enemies.
"What's the deal with the Music club, by the way?" Ken suddenly asked, which startled Cyril a little.
However, before he answered the question, the younger guy looked toward his club members and saw that some boys were trying to mock him from afar. It made him roll his eyes at them.
"They are just stupid, don't mind them much."
Ken, seeing the previous gesture of Cyril, also looked at the direction of the Music club. Just like the latter, he saw what the boy members were doing. He isn't fond of it since he himself has experienced some bullying before just for being a nerd, and he can already sense that this situation is something similar.
"Did you kiss a loser?" Ken asked as he turned his head to where Cyril is.
But the question was a little confusing for him, which made Cyril furrow his eyebrows at Ken, "What do you mean?"
"They are bullying you, you must have done something unacceptable by the society," Ken explained. Then his eyebrow raised as a gesture that he's repeating his previous question.
"Well, I-," Cyril said but hesitated for a second. Deep inside, he is quite scared to open up again. He doesn’t want the same thing to happen since it already did a lot of damage to him as a person. However for some other reasons, he also wanted to be brave enough to fight for himself because eventually, he has to do it, so why not start today.
As he let out a deep sigh, he continued. "I came out on the last day of my freshman year and my whole club started hating me and mocking me throughout the summer vacation. Well, not really the whole because my best friend stayed."
"Came out? You mean like you're a gay?" Ken asked in a clarifying way because he doesn't want to jump to conclusions.
To which Cyril shook his head. "Actually, I’m bisexual."
The latter guy leaned back on the table before he looked down at the ground. After confessing to Ken, Cyril is quite watchful of his reactions and gestures and he is thankful that even though the atmosphere turned a little gloomy and awkward, Ken only kept nodding. Probably still processing the new information that he learned from the younger guy.The two stayed quiet for a little while before a group of female freshmen came to the booth."Hi," the girl greeted."Hello," Cyril greeted back, finding it as an opportunity to shift their attention and change the atmosphere. "Are you checking out the clubs?""Yes, we are," she said then looked at her friends and back at Cyril. "We just thought that maybe we can take a picture with you?"
He held his jaw and felt the stinging pain. His lips started to taste metallic as well. "I warned you, didn't I?" Cyril looked down on his fist, soothing the pain on his knuckles. That simple statement from the younger boy was enough to make Eric stand up and clutch his collar. By this time, Eric's friends decided to step in. Ken, who happened to just finish his break time, saw the commotion from afar. Since Cyril got involved, he immediately ran over to their booth and went to his side. "What's happening here?" Ken asked, trying his best to pull the two arguing students apart. "He came to harass me. I just punched him, after I gave him a warning that he didn't seem to
7:00 a.m.The bell rang for the first time today to signal that classes are already starting. All of the hallways have been cleared of students too. Some who came late were asked to go to the disciplinary office. As for Cyril and Hera, they were almost caught by a student council member while walking to their literature class. Hopefully, they were saved by their teacher who called them to help her out with the books and some of her things as well.“Please distribute those to your classmates,” she instructed the two students as the three of them entered the classroom.“Yes ma’am.” They both went around to give the books to their respective owners. After settling down in their places, the teacher s
After Hera was able to swallow the food in her mouth, she held onto Cyril’s arm. “Don’t look back immediately, just listen to me first.” Cyril nodded at her fast. “Remember the guy from the other day, the one I said is your type?” “Yeah?” Cyril answered but at the same time he’s also unsure. “What about him?” “He’s sitting on the table next to Carmel’s,” she said, “don’t look directly at him, just pretend.” As Hera let go of Cyril’s arm he stayed still and continued eating. Just as some group of senior students came into the canteen, everyone’s attention was on them. So Cyril took this opportunity to look back and pretend that he’s attention was caught by them too. “I’m not gonna sit down.” Kode elaborated his previous answer.“And why is that?” She continues to question her student. The boy chuckled at his teacher’s question before he shook his head. He bent down and took his bag which was placed beside the chair he was sitting on earlier.“Kode, I will report this to your mom if you leave the class,” she threatens.“Go ahead,” he challenged her as he wore one strap of his bag. “I’m not scared of her.”“Kode, we are trying to help you but you need to help yourself too.”“I don’t need your help, not anybody’s,” Kode replied
“Kode is here,” a member announced to everyone inside of the room. “I think this is a mistake,” Hera said, before grabbing Cyril’s arm. She was also the one who turned around first, preparing to leave the room. “I said take your seat, didn’t I?” Kode asked. It made Hera stop and look at Cyril. With a hand gesture from the older guy, both of them went to take a seat on some vacant chairs. They stayed quiet as they noticed that everyone was looking at them. “We can just go if you don’t want us here,” Hera said. Once more looking at Cyril and seeing that he’s a little zoned out. Just as those conversations were happening, Cyril is a little scared and unsure at the same time about what’s happening. He couldn’t understand wha
Walking home after such a tiring day is Cyril’s least favorite thing in a day. Honestly, he could afford riding the bus or even a taxi cab if only Hera didn’t ask him to walk her home. Earlier during the club meeting, Hera encountered some maniacs and they thought that she liked them after she took some shots from afar. Hera tried to explain her side however, it wasn’t really enough for them to get away from her since she’s also pretty and attractive. It was only a good thing that Kode came by and Hera took that as her escape. “Those assholes, they made my heart pound so much I thought my soul would leave my body,” Hera complained. “You know, instead of asking me to walk you home,” Cyril said, “we could have just gone to the dean’s office and reported them.” Hera sho
Ever since the day that Hera and Cyril joined the photography club, the bullying somehow stopped. For a little while, classes with Kode became the only chaotic part of Cyril’s daily school life. Photography club every Friday is the worst for him, though.Given that he doesn’t have any photography skills unlike Hera, he always fails to do the tasks that Kode assigns to everyone. This resulted in him ending up in detention for 3 consecutive days and a warning letter. Detention in this club means that he has to stay for another hour making sure that the club room is in perfect condition and that every piece of equipment is in place. He had no courage to complain to the club president so Cyril only fulfilled his punishments.“I heard everyone in our club is required to attend the acquaintance party.&rd
Hera let go of the camera in her hand and let it hang around her neck, then she used her hands to make Cyril turn his gaze to the guy she’s been staring at since earlier. As if a magnet, even the best friend was mesmerized by the attractiveness of the stranger. “Who is that?” Hera asked. “You’re really asking me that question?” he returned a question to her with a disappointed face. “I want to talk to him,” Hera said. “Can you come with me?” “What? Why would I want to hear how you’d flirt with that guy?” “I’ll just ask for his name. I’m not gonna flirt with him.” Yeah right. Cyril only used his hand to gesture for Hera to go. S
"I don't think this is a good idea, Hera," Cyril said just after he glanced at the school gate. The class hours have long finished and tonight the school is only open for the yearly acquaintance party. 8 years of studying in the same school and today is the first time that Cyril will attend a school party. Not that his parents don't allow him, it's just that he isn't a party animal. Which brings them to this situation again."I don't think I want to go," he added. Turning around and walking away.Hera turned around with him before she held his arm and pulled him back. She was able to feel his cold skin, as well as pulps of sweat, forming on his body and it made her retract her hands immediately."Eww, how many liters of water did you drink?" she asked in disgust.
