**Chapter Seven**
I leave my office and head toward the conference room. When I arrive, everyone is already seated, waiting expectantly. To My heels click on the floor as I make my way to the table. All eyes shift on me. I won't lie, I am a bit anxious “Good Morning everyone. I am Marie Smith” I smile, “I am Marie Smith. I won’t be discussing for so long because I am still new here” my eyes search around, but I can't find Nancy. “Within yesterday and today, I have gone through the ongoing project and I wouldn’t like to say things about it but before I dive into that, dos anyone have anything to say?....” I pause when the door swings open, it was an unexpected interruption. Nolan who had told me he wouldn't be coming. My heart skips a beat as he moved forward.. “I am sorry for interrupting, but this meeting is canceled” I stand, unsure of how to react. The first meeting I'll be holding is canceled. I watch how the room becomes empty. As soon as the last person leaves, I slip out quietly, deciding to go to Nolan’s office for an explanation. Just before I reach the door, I hear voices. Nolan and... Nancy? My hand hovers over the door handle, but something stops me. Their voices are tense. I lean in closer, straining to hear. “Nolan, I can't just watch you place the girl who doesn't even know anything above me. It won't be possible” “You should be fine now. It has been canceled and now you can take over it like you want” “So what were you thinking before?” “Because I know her capabilities, I know what she can handle, I know. We shouldn't run this because of a selfish reason. Nancy, we both know you aren't capable of what you are doing, one of the reasons the company isn't moving forward” “I am not stopping you from doing whatever you want. Yes, but be ready to spread out the secret to the world” My eyes wide open in shock as I hear that, “What's the secret about?” I can hear her heels clicking on the floor like she was leaving, then I quickly knock to avoid them noticing that I overheard their conversation. None of them respond, then I knock again. “Come in” Nancy says. I open the door then I meet both of them standing. Nancy standing like she's fighting with someone and Nolan leaning against the wall. “Marie, is everything alright?” Nolan asks. I nod, I can't even tell him what I want to say after hearing everything from the door. “Then why are you hear?” Nancy asks codly “I….I….I thought” I stammer. “Mrs. Robinson or what do you say your name is? This is not a place you can be coming at your convenience? Okay?” Nolan walks towards me, “Marie” he calls, “Take a deep breathe, everything is okay” “Why did you call off the meeting?” Sillence. I look to Nolan, silently begging he'd say something-to explain what I had just heard, but there is no expression. "We had to cancel it…. For internal reasons”he says quietly and his voice is measured. "I'll explain later." But it's not enough. I can feel the tension between them, the weight of whatever secret they're hiding. And I cannot shake off the feeling that I am being kept in the dark. I nod, unable to say anything else, and turn to take a step back toward the door-desperate to get out before I unravel completely in front of them. "Marie," Nolan calls just as my hand touches the doorknob. "We'll talk later." I nod once more, but I never turn back. My mind reeling as I make my way out of the room, all I can think is-what are they keeping from me? And why do I get this feeling that I am in over my head? Every step feels like a heavy burden on my legs as I approach my desk and it all begins to speed through my head. The way Nancy threatened him. the way Nolan looked at me-as if he was holding back something huge, something would shatter it all. **What is this secret?** What could be so awful that Nolan would cancel an important meeting just to get her to keep quiet? I try to focus on the work facing me, but I am unable to. My fingers rest on the keyboard, not making a single move. All I can think about is that conversation. **"We both know you aren't capable of what you're doing, one of the reasons the company isn't moving forward."** His words still echo in my mind: Something happened before I joined? A scandal? Fraud? Or something worse? My stomach churns at just the thought of it. **What did she mean by 'spreading the secret to the world'?** I lean back in my chair, looking up at the ceiling. New, hardly ever scratched the surface, and already I have come across something so dangerous. I need to know. But how? Am I supposed to confront Nolan? Ask him point-blank about the past? Would he even tell me the truth after what I overheard? And what if he does? Will I regret knowing? My heart runs a gatto through possibilities. There is something dark here, just beneath the surface. And somehow, I feel like I'm already being pulled to it. I shake my head, clearing it, but it doesn't help. I heard this already and I can't pretend like nothing happened. I need to find out what happened-the real reason this company is what it is today. How do I look into something like this without painting a target on my back? My phone vibrates on the desk, pulling me from my thoughts. A message from Nolan: "Marie, can we talk after hours?" I hold my stare on the screen and my hands begin to shake. He knows, I think. He knows I heard something I wasn't supposed to hear. And now, whatever happens next feels like I'm about to step into something far more dangerous than I ever anticipated.Chapter Eight**I have been expecting his message, but I didn't see it. I start gathering my things to leave for my house. As I gather my things, I hear a knock at the door.“Come in,” I call, hoping it’s Nolan. The door opens, and to my surprise, Nolan steps inside. There’s a determined look on his face that makes my heart race.“Are you going home?” he asks.I nod, not looking at his face. “Is there anything you would like to tell me? I am heading home”He looks at me keenly, “No, I am not sure” he says, “Can I take you home?”“Take me home?” I blurt out, incredulous. “Do you think I am a fool or who do you think I am?” I say patiently. “You see I am trying to be calm, I need you to tell me everything going on?” “What's that?” He asks, pretending not to know what I am talking about. But Nolan's face is impassive, unreadable-but I can see a flicker of something, way deep behind his eyes. It's something he's desperately trying to push down.”Stop pretending, you know what I am talkin
Chapter Nine: Torn Between TwoI leave the office for my house, still feeling the weight of the secret on my shoulders. I plan to rest before thinking of the next step to take.As I step to the living room, I see a man in a crisp suit.“Good evening, Mrs. Marie,” he says, his voice cold, formal. I already know what this is. My heart pounds in my chest, but I force myself to stay calm.I remain silent.“I am here on behalf of Mr. Leo” he continues, “These are the divorce papers” he says, bringing out an envelope from his bag. “You can review and sign at your earliest convenience_Divorce. The word rings in my head, harsh and unyielding. This is it. This is really happening. Leo wants nothing to do with me anymore. The lawyer places the envelope on the table, gives me a quick nod, and leaves, leaving me standing there, staring at the papers like they’re some kind of dangerous tool, a time bomb ready to shatter my whole life.I collapse onto the couch, the weight of everything pressing d
Chapter TenI am about to sleep when a message pops up on my phone. It’s a message from an unknown number.‘If you really want to know what Nolan is hiding, come to Nueva Hotel and Suites.’My heart is pounding as I reread the message in my head. An ice-cold feeling creeps at the back of my neck. What is it? What are they aware of? I almost block whatever this is out. But the memories of Nolan and the need to know what this is about prevent me from doing so.I remove the sheets and get out of bed, my brain coming alive. I cannot turn a blind eye to this. If there is even a slight hope of finding out the truth about Nolan’s issue, I need to seize the opportunity. I reach for my phone and start looking for Nolan’s contact, but give up after a while. What if he was guilty about this too? I cannot afford to warn him. I have to do this by myself.I hurriedly put on clothes, put on a coat and shoes. As I drive towards Nueva Hotel and Suites, the air is chilly, and the places are poorly i
Chapter Eleven Chapter Eleven I wake up to the view of Nolan and Simeon beside me. The room is silent, save the rhythmic beeping of the machines surrounding me. My eyes are a bit blurry, but I manage to see Nolan sitting closer to the bed; his hands are clasp together, his eyes red and swollen as if he hasn't slept. Simeon and our maid stand by the window, arms folded across their chest, his face a mask of concern. My body feels heavy, and my mind is foggy with a lot of exhaustion and confusion. The truth of both of them being here may be a bit hard for my brain to wrap itself around at this moment. My throat is parched, my voice barely audible. "Simeon, why are you not in school" I manage to say. "How do you expect me to be in school when you are here?" My son walks towards me. As Simeon walks to me, his small, worried face tugs at my heart. Scared, his eyes are wide, and in that second, I have forgotten it all—Nolan, the crash, the betrayal. He's my son. "I didn't want
Chapter Twelve“Marie, it's not that I wanted the accident to happen….”“Really? You didn't want the accident to happen? But where was I coming from? Wasn't it the message I saw that made me start coming over there?”“Marie, it's trapped. didn't want to tell you this, but I think I can no longer keep it from you, I am sorry”I listen attentively, not replying to him “I traveled then, right" he says, I didn't travel because of work, I lied…” he says trembling. My eyes are wide open, “Why? Why did you travel? wasn't it because of work?”“I am sorry…”“Talk” I snap.He nods, “You see that I had to travel urgently”“Can you just talk…”“I actually hit someone in an accident and it was very bad, soit was only Nancy who knew I was the one who hit the woman. I didn't wait, I speed up”I freeze, my heart suddenly pounding in my chest. The words just hang there, hanging in the air and heavy with tension, the weight of something far deeper than I'd expected."What?" My voice is barely a whispe
**Chapter Thirteen: A Betrayal of the Worst Kind The nurse leaves the hospital room, leaving silence once again. But in my head, it is a very different matter. The words of Nolan keep swirling in my mind, a vortex pulling me under waves of confusion and anger. I feel trapped, ensnared by the love I once felt for him and the weight of his crushing truth. My eyelids grow heavy, and I close my eyes, attempting to rest. Again, though, the sound of footsteps approaching makes me open my eyes. The door opens very slowly. For a moment, I think it is Nolan again, but it is not him.Nancy entered the room with excessively composed countenance, her face radiating no trace of bother about anything in this world. Her eyes then focused on mine-cold and calculating. Instantly my heartbeat quickened because I always tried hard to sit up a little."What are you doing here?" I ask in strains tones.Nancy doesn't answer immediately. She walks over to the machines alongside me, the tips of her fingers
Chapter Fourteen: A Revelation UnveiledThe room is silent after Nolan has gone. The dull beeping of the machines is the only sound that manages to keep me oriented in reality. My mind, however, is lost in this sea of confusion and betrayal. I close my eyes and let out a long shaking breath. How did all these get so out of hand?Honestly, I do not know what more to think. The man I thought I knew, the man I loved, allowed Nancy of all people to walk away unscathed after trying to hurt me. How am I supposed to make sense of that? Regardless of what's going to happen, he shouldn't have let her go if he loves me I press a hand against my forehead, the dull ache settling there. Nolan's words still echo in my brain: "I did it to protect you, Marie." Protect me from what? From the truth? From his own guilt? My heart clenches painfully. A part of me so desperately wants to believe him. Wants to believe that somewhere deep down, he cares about me enough to want to keep me safe. But after ev
Chapter Fifteen: The Veil of ThreatsThe crisp hospital sheets are too tight around me, though they have already told me that I could finally go home. The words of the doctor-complete rest-are as if an echo in my head since I have been doing anything else all these days. It is not just the body that requires healing; there's much more inside that is broken.I wait for Nolan, trying to push the exhaustion that clings to me away. I didn't expected him to pick me up, for that matter. I didn't expected him to be around much at all after everything that happened. But he's here, showing up, reliable as ever, despite the tension grown between us.The door opens and I look up from my bed. Nolan is standing in the doorway. His face is soft, his expression is unreadable. Probably he's relieved that I am being released from the hospital “Ready?” He asks with a soft, cautious voice.I nod and start to feel a wave of dizziness as I stand. He steps forward quickly, offering his arm, and though I
Chapter One Hundred And Two: A Perilous PlanHeavy with the weight of his machinations, tension fills the air at Leo's large estate. The room is dimly lit, and quiet murmurs and conversations ensue between Leo's most trusted men-all handpicked for their loyalty and ruthlessness. Dominating the center of the room is a mahogany table littered with maps, files, and a few glasses of whiskey. Leo stands at the head, his commanding presence ensuring that all eyes remain on him.Leo's dark eyes dance with an unnerving mixture of anger and a resolution as he addresses his men. "Nolan thinks he can challenge me and win," he begins, his voice low but keen. "The fool actually took me to court, and now he has a woman strong enough to stand beside him. That's dangerous. One of his closest comrades, Marco, the man with a permanent scowl etched on his face, leans forward. "So what's the plan, boss? Do we hit him where it hurts? Burn down his business? Scare off his allies?"Leo shakes his head, his
Chapter One Hundred One : Strength in UnityThe early evening light filters through the living room windows as Nolan sets down his coffee mug on the kitchen counter. He’s restless, his mind replaying Leo’s threats from earlier. Elena moves around the kitchen with purpose, her hands busy slicing vegetables for dinner."You're still pacing," Elena remarks without looking up, her voice calm but firm. "It won't change anything, you know."Nolan stops mid-step and leans against the counter. "How can you be so calm, Elena? The man practically declared war in my own house. And the way he looked at you—"Elena lifts an eyebrow, smirking slightly. "What, you're scared of Leo now? I thought you were braver than that."Brave? It's not about bravery. You don't know what he's capable of. He's not just some angry ex-con. Leo is-He's dangerous," Nolan says, running a hand through his hair.Elena chuckles softly, shaking her head as she stirs a pot on the stove. "Dangerous or not, we're not running.
Chapter One Hundred: A Sudden VisitThe smell of sautéed onions and spices fills the small kitchen as Elena hums softly to herself. She efficiently navigates between the stove and the countertop, her hands deftly chopping vegetables as she occasionally follows along on the recipe pulled up on her cell phone. Sun pours through the window into the tidy space.Nolan leans lazily against the doorframe, arms crossed and his lips curled up in a small smile. He regards her with a quiet sort of admiration, though the tension in his shoulders betrays his thoughts."You know," he says at last, coming into the kitchen, "you really don't have to do all this. We could have just ordered something."Elena looks up briefly, her eyes sparkling with mirth. "And miss the chance to show off my cooking skills? Not a chance. Besides, you need a proper meal. Stress eating takeout isn't doing you any good."Nolan chuckles, moving closer. "Stress eating, huh? You make it sound like I'm falling apart."Elena r
Chapter Ninety Nine: UnitedThe soft hum of the morning sunlight pours into the kitchen, washing over the countertops and making everything moe bright. Elena stands at the stove, stirring a pot of oatmeal with a steady practiced motion. The kitchen is warm, comforting-familiar, normal in the chaos still hanging outside. The creaking of footsteps breaks the silence, and Elena doesn't need to lift her head to know who is behind her. Even before he says a word, the room fills with his presence- thick with tension now days over. She hears him stop right in the entrance, taking in the view of her; his gaze lingers as if she were the only thing keeping him bound to this earth."Elena," he begins, and the strained sound is almost weary. She doesn't turn around immediately, knowing he needs to say whatever is on his mind. She keeps her attention on the oatmeal, though she feels the heavy weight of his eyes on her."Something's wrong, isn't it?" she says calmly, while the undertone in her voi
Chapter Ninety Eight: A Fragile PlanThe room in the hospital is silent, except for the soft humming of machines that monitor Simeon's recovery. Morning light cascades through the blinds, giving the little room a pale glow. Marie sits by the window, observing her son leaning against his pillows. Simeon looks stronger now, his cheeks no longer as pale as they were when they first came in.“You’re getting better,” Marie says with a small smile. Her voice is warm, but there’s a tension behind it that Simeon doesn’t miss.“Yeah,” he replies, his tone flat. “I guess.”Marie hesitates, her hands fidgeting with the hem of her cardigan. She’s been thinking about this conversation all night, turning it over and over in her mind. She knows it’s risky, but she can’t shake the idea. Finally, she speaks."Simeon," she begins, her voice low. "I've been thinking. Perhaps we ought to get in touch with your father."Simeon freezes, his eyes narrowing as he stares at her. "What?"Hear me out," Marie sa
Chapter Ninety-Seven: The Predator ReturnsThe limousine rolls to a stop outside the towering iron gates of Leo Ralston's estate. The driver is out in a flash, briskly efficient as he opens the door. Leo steps onto the gravel driveway, commanding and cold. The air is crisp, biting against the fine fabric of his tailored suit, but Leo doesn't flinch. The gates groan to a creaky open, revealing the serpentine drive up to his mansion. In the distance, the imposing structure looms like a shadow against the fading light of dusk. This was always the house that represented his power, his untouchable status. Tonight, however, there seemed to be something off about it-something hollow in the silence that surrounded it.Leo's eyes go sharp as he nears the great front doors. The carving, once a pride, now feels almost mocking. He shoves the heavy doors open; the groan of it resounds through the halls that are now empty.A chill greets him from the foyer, one that has nothing to do with the eveni

It's not just about him; it's about Marie and Simeon. It's about all the lives Leo could destroy again. The drive home is silent and unusually so. Even the sound of the engine feels muffled under the weight of his thoughts. He clutches the steering wheel a little tighter than usual, his knuckles whitening. Pulling into the driveway of his modest home, he readies himself for the conversation that will ensue.Inside, Elena is sitting o
Chapter Ninety Five: FreedomThe atmosphere of the morning was thick with celebration as the people prepared to celebrate National Unity Day. The streets around the nation were draped with flags, and every available square space was packed with citizens awaiting parades and merrymaking. But behind the scenes, the government is planning a far less publicized but equally important move-a gesture of goodwill that reverberated through every corner of society.Senior officials filled the seats of the long table inside the presidential mansion. At the head of the table, the president ran his eyes over the document before him. On it was a list of prisoners eligible for early release, an early but symbolic act of compassion pertaining to the national holiday. This will send a great message," the Minister of Justice says, his voice measured. "The country requires unity, and giving amnesty to some of the prisoners will show our resolve for second chances."The president nods but does not say a
Chapter: Nolan's PromiseNolan sits beside Simeon's bed, his elbows to his knees, his hands clasped together in tight fists. The soft beeping of the monitor is a reassuring cadence, a steady heartbeat that tells him Simeon lives, that he still fights. Morning light seeps through the blinds, but the exhaustion in his body will not abate. His vow to Simeon, "I won't let you down, not this time," is the litany in his brain. The door creaks open, and Marie steps in hesitantly, carrying two cups of coffee. Her face looks tired, her eyes heavy from a sleepless night. She stops near the doorway, watching Nolan for a moment before speaking.“You should rest,” she says softly, setting one cup on the small table beside him.“I’m fine,” Nolan replies, his tone curt, though he doesn’t look at her.Marie pulls a chair closer and sits down, wrapping her hands around her cup for warmth. For a while, neither of them speaks, the silence stretching out uncomfortably. Then, she breaks it.“You’re still
