Enzo’s POV The sight of the paperwork in front of me was giving me a headache. “We’re getting calls from our clients non-stop.” Mark said, “Their work is pending, and they’re getting restless. If we don't speed up the process, we might end up losing one of them.” I clasped my eyes shut, “Alright, let’s go one by one. What do I have for today?” “Today, you have a meeting with the doctors from the Westwood group and they are demanding an update from our end. I tried speaking to them, but they’re adamant about meeting you. After that, we have to meet Lester regarding our case in the UK. We got it under control, but there’s a lot of paperwork you need to go through and approve before we proceed further. After that, you need to meet with senior partners today to discuss the financials for this quarter, and the final report we got today doesn’t look very great. After that-” “All of this in one day?” I said, “Mark, I have a dinner party with the family tonight. I need to leave by 6 pm.
Cassie’s POV As promised, Enzo arrived right on time to pick me up from home. I wore a pink dress for the dinner at this asian place Grandpa made a reservation at and dolled up Emmy with a pink frock. She was more than six weeks old now, but it seemed as though she was at least three months old. Enzo’s tall genes were probably to blame here. As soon as I got into the car, Enzo leaned toward me to place a chaste kiss on my cheek. “Can I ask you a favour, darling?” “Yes?” He gave me a tired look. “I’m too exhausted to drive. Would you mind getting behind the wheel? I’ll hold Emmy.” “Of course.” I said, unbuckling my seatbelt. As I started to drive, I cast a sideways glance at Enzo who was trying to play with Emmy. It was unreal how her face lit up every time she saw him and it felt unfair how I had to be the one to carry her for nine months and she came out loving her dad more. “Work is really eating you alive, Enzo. Are you sure you don’t want to slow down?” He looked at me, “
Enzo refused to spare me a glance even after we came home. While I changed Emmy into her night dress, Enzo went for a shower. By the time I put her in her crib and went to him, he held his hand up. “Whatever you have to say. I don’t want to hear it right now.”I looked at him helplessly, “Enzo, please. I just want-” “You had plenty of opportunities to speak to me about this in the past, but you chose not to.” “Because I didn’t want to burden you!” I cried. He gave me an incredulous look, “How will keeping the news from me help me in any way?” He said, “You kept this from me for months, Cassie! Months! Nothing can explain it. I wouldn’t have liked the news, but I would have preferred to hear it from you than anyone else. You think it felt great to have some random man come up to me today in the middle of a dinner and claim that he’s my father?” Tears pricked at my eyes once again, “It was never my intention to make you feel this way.” “What else did you think would happen when y
“No!” I gasped in horror, tightening my arms around her. “Relax, it’s just me.” Enzo said in a low tone, patting Emmy’s back. I looked at him as he slowly took her from my arms, his eyes still filled with unfinished sleep. “What time is it?” I asked. “It’s six in the morning.” He said, giving me a frown. “You’ve been here the entire night?” I nodded, “She was crying and refused to sleep in her crib. I thought I’d hold her since it calmed her down. I must have dozed off then.” “Why didn’t you wake me up?” I shrugged, unaware of how to answer that question. “Well, I’ll try putting her in the crib now.” He said and walked to her room. Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, I walked to the kitchen to pull out Enzo’s cup. I’d made him some coffee and was mixing the pancake batter when Enzo came into the kitchen. “What are you doing?” I eyed his coffee, “I made you some coffee.” “I… I’m not hungry. You should go to sleep.” “I’ll sleep after I make some breakfast.” I said, going to t
That night, Enzo didn’t come home. I was growing anxious by the second, unaware of what to do. I needed to speak to him desperately about what I learned, but he was unavailable. I left him multiple messages, called him several times, but he didn’t respond. After staying awake for him for hours on end, I finally received a text from him. “I’m staying back at the office.’ - Enzo. That was it. No news about when he’ll be back. Or why he was staying there. I guess I knew the answer to the latter. But I hoped I could know when I could next see him because I could not keep the news about his sister to myself any longer. The news weighed me down. I didn’t know what to make of it. And I had no idea how Enzo would react to it either. Would he accept her? Or refuse to acknowledge her? His was his blood, his only family for all I knew. She was kept from him for no fault of hers. Surely he wouldn’t be harsh toward her. I spent the entirety of the next day in agony, pacing around the house
Cassie’s POV Three weeks later, Enzo and I sat in our living room, waiting for our guest. It took him all these days to finally see the meaning in my words, and he decided to meet his sister now. “Where is she?” He said, glancing at his watch. “I’m running late.” “Gosh, Enzo. Give her a minute. She is in the elevator.” He let out a ragged breath. I could tell that he was nervous, but he wouldn’t let it show. This was how he’s been acting all week, as though meeting his sister was not a big deal. He was hell bent on proving to me and perhaps even himself that her presence in his life won’t matter too much. But I knew how much of a difference it would make. Especially if she was nothing like the woman he was making her out to be in his head. Right then, I heard a knock on the door making me stand up at once with a hopeful smile. I went to the door and opened it, and it revealed a familiar young woman. She looked just as pretty as when I last saw her, but anxiousness made her face
“What were you thinking?” Enzo hissed as soon as it was just the two of us. When I asked Sara if she would like to be Emmy’s nanny, she was stunned. It took her a good minute to understand the pros and cons, but when she realized how much we were willing to pay, it was a no brainer for her. She said yes instantly. Poor girl was working three jobs right now. If all went well, she could quit two of those for the pay she would be receiving here. However, the only person who was not happy with the entire set up was Enzo. “Enzo, don’t tell me this isn’t a good plan.” I said, “She is a reliable person, and she has good instincts. I mean, you’ve seen how she was with Emmy. And we desperately needed a nanny anyway.” “Yes, but Sara isn’t the only person available for the job.” He said, “God, she’s my sister. You don’t know if I want her in my life.” “You don’t?” I asked, “Is that what this is about? You can’t stand the sight of her anymore?” “That’s not it.” He gritted his teeth, “I do
Much to Enzo’s annoyance, I made sure Sara and Enzo sat at the table for breakfast. Enzo could tell that I was doing this on purpose, but he was polite enough to not call me out on my tactics. He simply poured himself some juice and got to eating. “So, Sara.” I said, “What are you studying at college?” Enzo glared at me, but he listened to her anyway. “I majored in English literature.” She said, taking a spoonful of salad into her mouth.“Oh, that’s interesting.” I mused. “Yeah, I didn’t get to finish it, though.” She said, “I had to drop out of college within eight months since I couldn’t afford the tuition. My scholarship was revoked halfway, and well…” “Why did that happen?” Enzo asked, “Your scholarship.” “Ah, well. The company that was funding my education went bankrupt.” She said, “I had no choice but to quit.” “And your father?” He asked, “He couldn’t help out?” She scoffed, “My father has been dependent on me for three years now. There’s no way he can help me.” “What
Enzo watched me as I got ready for work.It was my first day back at the office and I couldn’t be more relieved. To say the past few days have been difficult would be an understatement. I needed a distraction from everything, and what was better than going to the office? With Enzo unemployed, I had to make sure that I could put some bread on the table. Although my grandparents have been continuously calling me, offering me help, or in their words - letting me have what was mine, I simply could not let them. That would be the last straw for Enzo. He was already beating himself up as he saw me working day and night to make ends meet. “Did you speak to that friend of yours you were talking about?” I said, “The lawyer. He was offering you a job, wasn’t he?” “I lost my license to practice, Cassie.” He said, “I can’t practice law anywhere else.” I turned around, puzzled. “But Raymond told me that he offered you a position of a legal advisor. You can’t be an member of the bar, but surel
On Monday, all our boxes were packed and shifted to transport. I cast one last glance at our house. I remember the time I first moved in when Enzo gave me the freedom to redo the entire apartment. I was so overjoyed and spent an entire day working on it. And now, as I watched them tear down and remove everything we had in there, I could feel my heart break. I could only imagine what Enzo must be going through. Enzo refused to stay for the final take over of the house. He left downstairs with Emmy while I waited upstairs to finish all the formalities and paperwork. Once I was done, I went down to join them. “It’s done.” Enzo nodded, “What’s the plan now?” He asked, “We could… go to a hotel.” “No.” I said, holding his hand, “Come with me.” We loaded our luggage into a cab and got in. Once I gave him the address, Enzo frowned at me, “Where are we going?” “I got us a house last week.” I said, “We’ll be staying there from now on.” “A house?” He asked. “Where?” “In Brooklyn.” “How
I anxiously waited outside the conference room. Enzo was in there talking to all of his clients in an attempt to explain to them that this was not his doing. Raymond was out here with me, pacing around the room. For the past few days, Raymond has been a tremendous help to us. Since Enzo was not in the right position to take care of everything, he stepped in to do all the negotiations. Today was the day that would decide our fate. Although I knew what was coming for us, I couldn’t help but hope that something miraculous would happen today and turn the odds in our favor. And then finally, Enzo came out. And his expression revealed that the meeting didn’t go well. “They’re taking everything.” He said, “Every single penny I own.” My heart sank. “Is there no other way?” “The clients think I betrayed their trust, so they’re seeking a higher compensation.” He said, “And since they’re doing me a favor by not pursuing this criminally, my lawyer thinks I should settle.” Criminally? Oh, G
“Who did it?” I asked, treading him carefully. In all these years of knowing him, I never saw him like this. This broken. This helpless. Enzo built that firm with his own blood and sweat. It was everything to him, and to have it all be taken away - it was a nightmare for me. Suddenly, I was enraged. The mere thought of Trent Dalton was making me shake with anger. But I knew that this was not entirely his doing. To pull off something like this, he needed someone on the inside, a mole, to give away such sensitive information. If the transactions are portrayed to be made by Enzo, then it must be an insider that had access to such sensitive information. “I don’t know.” Enzo said, “Whoever it was, they altered the firm’s accounting software to move client funds, trust funds, into my personal account. I had no idea of this, and nor did I receive any messages from the banks regarding giant transactions. Trent must have paid them to be silent as well.” “If they could get into accounting
“How old is your baby?” The nurse asked as she handed a crying Emmy back to me. “Four months now.” I sighed, patting her. “Oh, Emmy. Calm down. It’s over, isn’t it?”She just received her vaccine shot and came out of the doctor’s office bawling her eyes out. “She’s so adorable.” She mused, handing me my file. “I would agree but she’s throwing too many tantrums lately.” I said, “She could be a handful when she wants to.” “I wish I could say it gets better but it truly doesn’t.” She laughed, “But that’s what we signed up for, right?” “Yes.” I said, kissing my daughter’s tear stained cheek. “Let’s go home, shall we? Daddy’s waiting for us in the car.” Emmy just replied with another sob, burying her face in my neck. As we went out, I spotted Enzo’s car in the parking lot and headed toward it. I quickly got in. “These vaccination visits are so difficult.” I said, as I closed the car door. “I just can’t see Emmy crying so much. I just walked out of the doctor’s office today, can you
After the party, Enzo, Emmy, Sara and I headed back home. Sara was shook from the entire episode that played out and remained silent the entire journey home. As we went in, I looked at her. “Take the guest room. You can rest there.” She didn’t move an inch until Enzo looked at her. And then, she said, “I can’t live here.” She sighed, “I… I can’t… I don’t want to be a burden on anyone.” “Sara, you’re not a burden.” I protested, patting a sleeping Emmy on my chest. “I will be if we continue this arrangement.” She said, “I don’t want-” “How about this?” Enzo intervened, “I’ll give you a house. It’s right by your workplace. That way you won’t have to live with us, nor with your scum of a dad.” “A house?” She said, “I’m sure I can’t afford the rent.” “You can live there for free.” He said, “I just… I don’t ever want you to go back to that house.” Sara stared at him for a long while, as though she was trying to figure him out. “Why are you doing this?” “What?” “You didn’t even wa
Enzo looked at me and then back at the crowd, and then finally, a grin broke out on his face. “Wow.” he said, running his eyes over everyone. “That’s… my friends from college and my… how did you get them all together?” I shrugged, “After a month of thorough planning.” “I can’t believe you did this.” He said, “This is brilliant. Thank you so much, Cassie.” “You’re welcome.” I smiled. ”Now, let’s go.”One by one, Enzo’f friends and colleagues came up to him to meet him, but my eyes were looking for Sara. I found her at the far end by the bar, enjoying a drink with Mark, but her eyes were set on Enzo. She deserved to be here with us. “Oh, Emmy.” I heard Kelly’s voice coming from my side, distracting. I grinned as Emmy effortlessly slipped from my arms into hers. “Look at her, she looks like a darling.” She then looked toward, impressed, “Cassie, I must say. You completely transformed this place. Well done.” “Sara was of tremendous help, really.” I said, “I could not have done thi
Enzo’s POV I felt a small nudge on my stomach as I woke up. Assuming it to be Cassie’s limb, I ignored it. However, the nudge soon tickled it and then I felt something wet. My eyes opened to look at Emmy crawling on my chest, trying to bite my skin. A smile tugged at my lips upon the sight of her adorable face. Picking her up to my face, I placed a kiss on her cheek. “How did you come here, darling?” I mumbled as I shifted to my side. And right then, I saw it. A small cupcake was resting on the bed with a note that read: Happy Birthday Daddy. I widened my eyes in surprise and grabbed my phone to check the date. Damn. I really lost track of time. “Happy birthday, baby.” Cassie grinned, leaning down to kiss me on the lips. “First birthday with our daughter, aren’t you thrilled?” “Absolutely,” I said as I watched Emmy. She was making weird, excited noises now, eyeing the cupcake. Her hands were reaching out toward it, and I scraped off the frosting on top to place it on her lips.
As I went back home, I wondered what all of that was about. The man seemed weird, but should I tell Enzo? I was worried that he was already so stressed with everything at work. I was sure he would be overthinking with this even more. The last thing I wanted was to burden him, so I guess I would have to keep this one to myself. What Kent Rover said could’ve been a result of a massive ego hurt and nothing at all. In that case, there was no reason to alert Enzo. If he approached me again, then I would talk to Enzo about it. As I went home, I found Sara and Emmy playing in the living room as usual. However, what was strange was that Mark, Enzo’s associate, was added to the mix. And from the way Sara was laughing at whatever he had to say, I could tell that they were having a rather good time. “Hello.” I said as I walked in, “Didn’t expect you here, Mark.” He gave me a casual smile as he looked at me. “I’m sorry. I’m running errands for your fiance, please don’t mind.” “Not at all.”
