[Nowo's POV]
I had a dream last night; I saw myself getting slain by a person who didn't seem like an enemy. When I was about to look at his face, everything got blurry, and the sound of a loud trumpet noise woke me up.
"Strange," I uttered to myself. My heart had never felt this heavy when waking up from a nightmare. That one felt different and weird. I could also feel my tears streaming down my face at this moment. "Why am I crying?" I wondered as I wiped my tears off my cheeks.
"Hiya, Nowo dea---what happened?" Lane landed both of her palms on her rosy cheeks and flew near me.
I shook my head lightly, still not giving her a look. "I don't know, Lane. But it seems like it's too hard for me to breathe right now," I said as I laid my right palm on my chest.
"Will you please wait for me outside? Just give me a minute." I requested with a calm tone. I never wanted her to misunderstand me again.
She nodded her head and answered, "Okay. Just promise me that you'll be fine. Hmm?"
"I promise, Lane."
The past few days have been tough. Some realities about our life had been revealed all of a sudden, and I wasn't ready for any of it. It all entered my brain in a snap; maybe that was the reason why I'm feeling this kind of unusual pain and sadness. Like a dagger is slowly piercing through my chest.
I may not yet be ready to accept the truth, that I am one of these defenders who need to save this land from darkness, but I need to give it a try since I don't have another option for me to choose from.
This burden inside me makes me think of how I can be able to save these creatures if I couldn't see the light inside me as well?
[Lane's POV]
Why is my Nowo dear taking so long? Is she alright? Or maybe not? What if she did something horrible to herself?
Those were the questions that kept on ruining my peaceful mind as I flew back and forth in front of my Nowo's wooden door.
"What's with the face, Lane? Are you alright?" I heard someone ask me, but I didn't pay attention to it.
'Am I?' I asked myself as well, still in panic.
"Hey, stop that." I suddenly bumped into someone, and that seriously hurt.
"Ouchie!" I complained while touching my poor little forehead. I raised my head and ended up seeing the male fairy and his buddy. "Talaa. Moha. Hiya~" I greeted them with a sweet smile, continuously rubbing my reddish forehead.
"Where's Nowo? Oh, let me guess, maybe she's still sleeping, right?" Moha asked me as he walked towards Nowo's room. "I'll wake her up."
I thought of it for a second and suddenly remembered that my dear Nowo asked me for a few minutes to think. I quickly flew away and spread my hands and feet to stop him from entering my dear's room.
I crossed my arms and said, "It's my job to check on her. You guys can go first."
They were just giving me a blank stare, as if they wanted to put me in a jar and throw me out of this place.
So mean.
[Nowo's POV]
I could clearly hear their conversation while I was dressing up for another day of training. I'm currently wearing a simple black unitard that covers me from neck to ankle, and brown leather boots lace up to my knees.
I walked towards the long wooden table in front of the window and took my sword right before I walked outside.
"Sorry to keep you all waiting." The wind started to blow from my left side, causing my black wavy hair to sway to the other direction, and I could feel a few strands of it gently touch my right elbow.
They were all having their gaze locked on me, not uttering any word.
"What now?" I urged.
Lane suddenly clapped her little hands and said, "Wow~ You look so gorgeous, Nowo dear."
I never expected these kinds of reactions from them, wherein Lane would look as if she's truly amazed from what she's seeing now. Talaa seems to be undecided whether he would constantly stare at me or at his master who currently looks like a funny statue right now.
"Can you guys stop acting so weird? You're making me feel awkward," I complained to them.
Moha let out a deep breath and smiled at me. "Sorry. It's my first time seeing you like a real woman."
Those words made my eyebrows crease. "Are you saying that I look like a man?" I responded with a serious tone.
"Well, haha. I didn't say that, but yeah…" He winced while nodding his head. I could feel the heat beginning to crawl all over my face.
"Makes me wanna pierce this through your body," I said as I gripped my sword's handle and glared at him.
He responded with a grinning smile which made me roll my eyes.
"Don't mind him, Nowo. Anyway, you look wonderful," Talaa uttered to me right before he started flying towards Moha.
How I wish that male fairy would switch places with him so that I could put him in a jar and silence him for a while or much better for a very long time.
"Psh." I uttered to myself.
Lane and I began to head on our way to the training area. We saw three other orphans having a good time with each other. The long-haired woman's eyes are sparkling as she hops while passing through an open door of the training area, followed by an alluring short-haired woman who's currently flashing a smile on her face as she hooks her hand on the man's shoulder who's about one-hundred seventy centimeters tall.
"Who are they?" I asked my fairy.
She started to squeeze her lips together and responded, "As far as I can remember, that is Cordelia, the little lady who seems to be very lively and cute like me. Hihi~ The other girl's name is Frisia, the most mature woman I've ever encountered so far. And that man… hmmm… Raiden? I don't know much about him except for the fact that he's very quiet."
"Why do you ask, Nowo dear?" She started to question me after I responded with nothing but a sudden silence.
I shrugged my shoulders and said, "Well… they seem to be very close to each other. I guess happiness is still possible in this world."
I started to lift my feet and head inside the training room and search around the place where I could possibly train on my own. Well, originally, Moha and I were supposed to train together, but his weapon is a long range while mine isn't. So basically, we don't fit to train together.
I gave Lane a quick gaze, and I saw her pointing on a huge space at the right corner of the room, and the moment we had already reached the said empty space, I started to pull my sword that was tucked in my scabbard belt.
"Mind if I practice with you?" said the man who's both hands are placed on his back. He started flashing a smile and offered me his right hand.
"I'm Helios. Nowo, right?"
Helios? He doesn't seem like a bad person at all. Though he has those thick eyebrows that make him look serious and cold, the way he stretches his lips, lifting both of his pinkish cheeks, will make you believe that he's a nice man. Not to mention, his charming presence and brownish eyes.
I can describe him as one of those characters I have read in a book, like a wolf man or something. He also has a companion with him, a small fiery red dragon clutching on his left shoulder.
"Hey, still there?" My eyes were locked on him the moment he started moving his face closer to mine. The sound of a snap awakened my senses.
I nodded my head lightly and began to lower my gaze. "Um, yeah. Sorry."
He bent a bit and asked, "So, what now?"
"W-what?" I stammered. I tried to avoid his gaze, but his recent offer flashed back into my mind. I gave him a quick gaze and agreed, "Okay, sure. Let's practice."
Lane was unusually quiet and just watched us the whole time. I wonder what she's currently thinking. Maybe I looked like a dumb lady to her earlier, but she couldn't blame me for that. It's my first time having a conversation with a man that is far different from Moha.
"Ready?" He asked.
"Yes," I confirmed.
Then we started wielding our swords, and it somehow felt weird on my part since I can finally use my weapon better than before. Maybe Lane is using her powers to help me.
-----"Struggles and conflict are both around the corner. While the flowers are starting to bloom, a sudden event will come and begin to test them, whether their roots are strong enough to keep them tucked in their places or not."----
[Nowo's POV]Not so long ago, after the flower learned how to survive from the unpleasant happenings around her, even though the sunlight remained unseen, it didn't stop her from blooming slowly. The color of her petals is starting to fade in, and a small amount of hope is also beginning to sprout from her.As I go back to reality, learning how to use this sword is never an easy task for me or for anybody else, except for Helios, who seemed to be an expert at wielding this heavy sword since the day he learned how to walk."Let's take a break," I suggested while catching my breath. We have been training for a week now, with a maximum of eight hours a day, which seems like a working hour for me, but instead of holding papers, we're both gripping our sword handles. He smiled and took a deep breath as well. "Okay then. I'll give you a minute to rest," he told me as he wiped his sweaty forehead.Helios is such a great fighter. If there will be a match between the two of us, I can surely sa
[Nowo's POV]"Goodnight, Nowo."This morning, the sound of trumpet noise didn't wake me up but the voice I've heard from a dream, I guess.Strange.I think I've already dreamed about this voice, however, I couldn't remember when it happened. My eyes were already opened. I can't barely move that's why I stayed lying on my bed for few more minutes while staring at the ceiling. The sight of it suddenly changed into dark clouds with black smoke coming towards me, I could barely breathe as if something strangled my neck. I creased my eyebrows due to confusion, but the thought of maybe it's some kind of another nightmare made me blinked my eyes and then after that Lane suddenly appeared in front of me."Hiya." She lively greeted me wearing a wide smile. My eyes are still widened even after that. "Why… What's the matter, my dear? Having nightmares again?" She asked, her forehead creased in worried lines as she stared at me."No, Lane. I'm fine." I spoke to her, but inside I was like, what in
[Nowo's POV]My windows are wide open as I sit down on my bed, currently lost in random thoughts. I can't forget what happened earlier while Helios and I were training.I stare at the small cut on my right arm, reminiscing about how my best friend and Luna happily bonded. The tiny injury? I got it from Helios' sword; my mind's attention drifted to someone else when he moved his sword in my direction. It's weird; there's a part of me wanting his sword to end up piercing through my chest to stop my heart from beating weirdly fast."Here, take this. Please don't do that again," Helios utters with a straight face, handing me a white cream from Arphen.Lane suggested earlier that she would help me heal it, but I refused. I want the wound and my scars to remain on my skin, reminders of my clumsiness and dumbness.Speaking of Lane, I wonder where she is."Nowo, are you listening to me?" he asks.I suddenly come to my senses, but I had already forgotten what he said the moment he came near me
[Narrator's POV]The awaited test has finally come. All the orphans were gathered around the training area with their weapons hidden in their armor. Their guardians are all gathered away from their direction. They were all standing next to each other, eagerly waiting for Alasdair's announcement, but then Arphen showed up in front of them instead of him. Their hearts are all filled with excitement, especially the little lady who seems excited about a big fight.Cordelia can't help but jump in joy as they wait for the announcement, while her guardian, a nine-tailed fox, remains calm. Despite her childish personality, she has an unexplainable urge to fight strong opponents.Maison acts like a child as well, but far from Cordelia, he mostly can't stop himself from changing his emotions. Whenever he feels very happy, he tends to express it by crying instead of laughing. That makes him look weak, though he has a strong aura hidden inside him.The rest of the defenders, including Frisia, Lun
[Narrator's POV]A loud trumpet noise reverberated around the defenders' base, prompting them to assemble inside the training ground. Afterward, Arphen utilized his powers to create a portal to a room surrounded by root-like walls, featuring beds made of huge leaves. As they reached this magical place, their eyes widened with curiosity. They couldn't help but wonder why Arphen had brought them here when they were supposed to begin their first test."You might be wondering why I brought you here," he guessed, scanning each of them before continuing his speech. "Well, all of you are aware that there are no more trees left in this land, and that is a fact. The seven trees of wisdom are planted in your dreams, and as you can see, there are golden beans placed at the center of each bed."Upon hearing the announcement, the defenders started searching for the magic beans."Those magical beans will put you into a deep sleep. You will be facing seven trees after that, so it only means that you
[Nowo's POV]What is much harder than a simple labyrinth? It is the mind's labyrinth. You're walking on an unknown path while your mind is also solving a puzzle, thinking about the right direction to go. You are surrounded by huge walls, unable to see what is waiting for you every time you turn left or right. The thought of 'maybe there are some kinds of monsters here' continuously bothers me as I look for a possible way that will guide me to the sixth tree. I was walking really fast without even noticing the man in front of me."S-sorry," I uttered in pain as I touched my head. His brown leather boots are kind of familiar. The moment I raised my head to see the person I bumped into. "Moha?" I uttered while creasing my eyes. The vision is kind of blurry, but I'm sure that he's the one that I'm seeing right now.He flashed a sneer smile right before he revealed his right hand that was hidden from his back. His sudden movement caught my attention, and as I began to look down at his hand
[Narrator's POV]Riddles might sound easy at first, but as you delve deeper into those rhyming and magical words, you will suddenly find yourself both confused and dazed. Isn't it ironic when a complicated set of words causes you to think in a very complex way, even though the answer is just a simple one?Above all, Nowo feels glad that they all succeeded in the first stage of their test, even though it took an hour for some of them to come back. Arphen let them rest for a while as they were waiting for the headmaster's announcement."The headmaster must be really busy. I wonder what kind of mission he's currently on." Maison wondered.Cordelia's eyes widened in excitement. "Maybe he's fighting someone strong! I envy him for that. Maybe I could fight him too?"Arphen wore a crooked face after hearing those words from the two defenders. He sighed and said to himself, "How I hoped the king was really on an important mission. For him, looking for the leader's whereabouts is a much harder
[Frisia's POV]After the headmaster left the training ground, I sat on the wooden glossy floor and started cleaning my lovely companion, which is my axe."I miss you, my love," I said to myself and chuckled.Having quality time with my baby is my favorite thing to do. Especially at times like this. I wanted this moment to last longer, but then I saw the tall guy coming near me again."What's up, Raiden?" I asked him. He was just staring at me with a blank expression. I knew that he's going to babble about a nonsense thing again only to make our conversation long enough. "Are you going to talk or not? Just go straight to the point; I don't have much time to talk," I calmly told him and then I smiled."Nothing. I just want to sit here," he responded.Though I knew that he wanted to say something, I just shrugged my shoulders and decided not to mind him. I want to give my full attention to my lovely axe until I no longer feel exhausted.I'm not very sure about the reason why I keep on re
Like a tragic story, my path didn't end well. I fought in a way that I believed was my best, only to find out that nothing was sufficient. Even one's true self couldn't serve as a ticket to alter fate. The memories of that war are still vivid in my mind, from the moment we prioritized our duties as defenders over everything, including our hearts, to that specific instance when he finally did what he needed to do to save the land. The profound sorrow visible in his eyes remains unforgettable and painful. Although we never had a chance to bid a proper goodbye, at least we knew we did our best for what is right. After that, my messy but joyful life seemed to come to an end. It feels like everything happened just yesterday, yet I know it's been a long time since the terrifying war with the dark realm. I can now feel my entire body lying on a soft bed, which I guess is made of swan feathers. The sweet floral scent in the air suggests daffodils. My hands grip the smooth texture of their ste
[Nowo's POV]"I didn't know you had that kind of courage to betray us," Algea told me.She became mad at me because of what I did to the dark lord. With the use of the queen's soul, I tried to harness her power to cleanse the evilness inside my father's heart. I wasn't even finished when she suddenly entered my father's chamber and pulled my hair. The dark lord woke up, seeing her pointing a knife at my throat."What do you think you are doing?" he asked her."Why? Is your heart getting soft now? This defender is a traitor!" she exclaimed."Kill me so that you won't be able to use that damn stone," I teased her.She pulled my hair tighter, and then she said, "Who are you to order me around?""I'm the daughter of the queen whom you were envious of and the dark lord whom you loved the most but cannot have," I teased her once again."Do you think you can take all the bad spirit inside your father's body?" she asked me. "Let me tell you something. No black witch has the kind of weak power
[Nowo's POV]After they took her for some treatment, me and Lane went to our room to finally take some rest. We only have a few hours to spend here before we go back to the dark realm, like what I have promised to my father. Algea let me drink a potion, which will soon take me back to that place, like a bubble that pops out from this base."I'm leaving everything to you, Lane," I told her."Can I just go with you?" She sadly asked me.I started to lower my gaze and took a deep sigh, "I won't let them have anyone that is precious to me ever again, and I don't want your life to be in danger," I told her."But, Nowo," I didn't let her finish her sentence."Here," I interrupted while handing her a bottle of potion. "Drink it, and you'll be free from your contract.""What do you mean?" She asked me, stammering."You have to take this potion so that you'll stay alive no matter what happens to me," I explained to her.Lane started crying, and that punched my heart so damn hard. My tears were
[NOWO's POV]Like the flower sprouted in a small amount of land placed at the center of the continuously flowing river, I have no other places to go to either. I'm stuck in a bad fate that isn't going to change. I sometimes ask myself, am I really going to do this? Am I ready to fulfill the mission I just found out from where I was destined to die?But far from before, I can clearly understand my purpose in this land now. Those questions are just a part of a normal Nowo who never ran out of complaints and questions in life. Now that I am facing him, not in a safe place but his dangerous place, I know I should never think about going back to our base."What brings you here, my daughter?" He asked me. Everything about the dark lord is kind of weird for me. I also wonder why he always has that evil witch beside him. It's like that woman didn't want to leave him alone."I am here for Fraise," I uttered. I was so determined to get her out of here that I didn't even have time to change my e
[Nowo’s POV]It was a complete, deafening silence the moment they all left the training ground. I thought I was the only one inside at that moment, but then a glowing creature flew towards my direction."Hiya," she greeted me. One of her hands was placed on her back, and the other one continuously waved at me while she was also lowering her gaze. She almost bumped into me, but then I stopped her tiny body with my index finger. "Oops, sorry, dear," she uttered."It's okay. Will you please raise your head up?" I told her while smiling. She pouted, and then she asked me, "Are you still mad at me?"I shook my head from left to right and sat her on my left palm. "I wasn't mad at you.""But you didn't talk to me for days," she responded.I took a deep sigh and then I told her, "Well, I'm kind of disappointed because of what I have figured out recently.""But you can always talk to me about anything. It just doesn't feel right to be ignored, especially by you, my dear," she responded. I coul
[Nowo’s POV]That was the first time I spent almost the whole gloomy day reading only one book. It might not be for me, but the thing is, it captured my attention. What was written inside, as well as the kind of helpful information it provides, makes me want to put my time into it. It's pretty hard to admit, but I find myself really weird these past few days. I've been so busy thinking about everyone’s betrayal towards me, and I knew at that moment that my decision to just end the darkness is at its final level. I know it is kind of unusual for me to confess it, but I don’t feel like ending someone’s life anymore, even if it’s the dark lord. Given the fact that he is my father, won’t change anything. It’s just that I want nothing but peace, and killing will never be a part of it.“Lane, have you...” I was right about to talk to her and paused until I realized that she’s not here with me, and this is the first time I felt completely alone. No Moha, no Lane, no one that I can possibly
[Narrator's POV]Meanwhile, Helios noticed the unusually quiet person beside him. He creased his forehead and started questioning her, "Cordelia, are you alright?"Not only that she's unbelievably silent, but she was also lowering her head to the point that her chin almost reached her chest. Helios is unable to take a peek at her face because it is hidden, and the dark lord's chamber is too dark as well."Hey, kid," Helios uttered after tapping the female defender's shoulder lightly.Helios found it more strange when her body suddenly shakes, as if she was either crying or laughing. A few seconds after that, Cordelia raises her head and stares at him while flashing a wide smile on her face."Am I being weird if I say that I'm completely thrilled and fired up right now, Helios?" She responded. Her voice was too loud for the rest of the defenders to hear her."Are you being serious right now?" Jack asked her.Instead of answering him, she just stared at him still wearing that kind of cr
[Narrator's POV]Life is indeed full of surprises and uncanny events that will leave you dumbstruck for the whole moment. It is quite hard for them to catch their emotions the moment they all figured out that their female comrade is still alive. They didn't know whether to celebrate the happiness they are currently feeling right now or to put their attention to the growing fear and sadness, seeing her in a very unwell condition. The dark lord went somewhere behind Fraise. He clasped his hands on the female defender's shoulders, and then he his near the side of her face. "Wake up and take a look at those wonderful despair painted on your comrades' faces."Raiden was completely annoyed about what the dark lord did. "Don't touch her or even come near her."Pricus quickly lifted his hands away from Fraise's shoulders, "Oh my, I'm scared." He said, and then he started chuckling. A few seconds after that, he began to flash a smirk on his face and touches Fraise's hair gently, and then he su
[Narrator's POV]"Why did you come with us?" Luna asked Lane. "Aren't you supposed to stay beside Nowo?" she added.Lane couldn't blame her for wondering about it because she also knew that it is completely odd for her to accompany them instead of staying beside her dearest person."She doesn't need me. I feel like I'm being abandoned for no clear reasons," the female fairy uttered while lowering her gaze."Hey, don't say that," Luna responded to her. She started tapping her back lightly with her index finger and then she continued, "Nowo will never abandon such a sweet guardian like you."Lane stared at her and asked, "If that's the case, then how come she keeps on hiding? Like she doesn't even want to talk to me anymore.""As far as I know, dear, Nowo didn't speak to anyone for days. Maybe she wasn't in a good mood these days or something really bad came up, and she ended up losing her will to interact or to do anything," she explained. It is clear that she was trying to make the fe
