Getting out of the company, the first thing Emery did was to get back to her apartment. She didn’t want anyone to see her in that state.

Everything was gone.

The company her father had built, everything she had fought so hard to take back from those people had been stolen from her in a single meeting.

She stepped into her apartment not before locking the door behind and dropping her bag onto the coffee table.

The room was silent… too silent.

Her hands trembled as she sat down on the sofa. Tears started to pour out of her eyes. The board had turned their backs on her.

She knew Margaret would still be making efforts to get her out of the company but she never believed that Margaret would succeed in her plan now.

Guess that was the price of taking your enemy weak.

And Calloway… he had enjoyed every second of her downfall. She knew he always wanted to get her out of the company and of course this was the right time for him.

A sob escaped her lips as she sank onto the couch. She tri

Callahan's head tilted a little as he said, "And yet, the board voted her in."Emery clarified, "They voted for stability. They believed that a steady hand was essential in my father's business. They ended up with a sinking ship.” Before delivering the actual hit, she gave that some time to sink in. "And when it goes under, Rick, your 8% stake turns to dust."Although she couldn't read his expression, she could tell she had touched a nerve by the little change in his stance. She went on, "I'm offering you a way out. Help me when I question the board. I promise you a seat at the table if you help me change the tide, not the symbolic one Margaret has given you.”Callahan shook his head and laughed. "You have your father's voice. But why should I support you after you've already lost, Emery?”Emery's mouth formed a little, sly smile. "Because the only thing people love more than watching a fall from grace—" she said, leaning in a little, her voice getting low a little— "is watching a co

Emery had expected resistance, but Margaret's counter strike came swifter than anticipated. Within hours of securing Langford's reluctant support, the media was awash with reports questioning Emery’s past leadership decisions."Unstable, reckless, and unfit for corporate leadership," one headline read. Another insinuated that Emery had orchestrated backdoor deals that compromised Hart Enterprises’ financial standing. It was a blatant smear campaign, but one that could sway uncertain shareholders against her.Emery sat in her office, scrolling through the news feeds while Amelia paced furiously. "Margaret must have had these ready to go the moment she caught wind of your meeting with Langford."Alex leaned against the desk, arms crossed. "The timing is too precise. She knew you were coming for her, Emery.""I don’t care about media perception," Emery said, placing her phone down with a controlled breath. "I care about the vote. Margaret is trying to make me look like the unstable facto

Emery pulled away first, her breath uneven as she stepped back, reality crashing over her. The warmth of Darren’s touch lingered on her skin, sending a confusing mix of emotions through her. She shouldn’t have let herself get this close—shouldn’t have let the past creep in when the present was already unraveling beneath her feet.Darren searched her gaze, his fingers still ghosting over her wrist, as if reluctant to let go. A muscle in his jaw tensed, as if he was debating whether to pull her back or let her walk away. But Emery straightened, pushing past the emotions clawing at her chest. "I need to focus," she murmured, forcing herself to turn away. "Margaret just played her biggest move yet. If I don’t counter, I lose everything."Darren exhaled sharply, raking a hand through his hair. "Then let me help. Whatever you need."His words hung between them, heavy with an unspoken promise. She turned back, her heart pounding as she met his gaze. There was something raw in his expression—

Emery found it difficult to breathe as the weight of the revelation slammed against her chest. Not only was Calloway strong, he was unstoppable. Unaffected by time, a ghost in the system. With a loud click, Alex closed his laptop, his eyes darting to the door as though something—someone—would suddenly break through it. "Emery, this is more than just business. This is a very different matter."With a shaky exhale, she forced herself to think. "This is not enough for us. We require evidence. There must be a trend if he has been deleting people. A—"She was interrupted by a harsh knock. She knew he kept a knife in a drawer, and Alex tensed, his fingers hanging there. The safe home, which was just an abandoned warehouse, was hidden away on the industrial fringes of the city. The walls smelt of dampness and rust, and the air was filled with distant traffic.Emery barely noticed it when she parked, her hands numb on the steering wheel. Alex groaned next to her, clutching his ribs and breathing erratically."Now, inside."Emery didn't hesitate. She grabbed her luggage, slid out of the car, and rushed on, her heart still pounding from the encounter. After Calloway touched her, she felt cold; a feeling far older than fear persisted.Alex muttered a curse and fumbled with the lock before pushing the metal door open. Emery's first breath tastes like remembrance and ash. When she awakens, she sees a sky that is divided in half, half dawn and half dusk, neither of which is subject to the sun. It's a familiar world. However, it is incorrect. Structures tilt where they shouldn't. Streets twist and turn. Trees groan, their leaves glistening like mirrors. Somewhere, a bird's sounds dissolve into quiet as it sings in reverse. The clocks tick, but in reverse. Time seems to be striving to reverse itself. Additionally, the mirrors The mirrors depict her then, not now. Previously. She recognizes faces, but not exactly. Faces with her anger, scars, and eyes and another item. Something more ancient. She staggers along. Before it stops feeling normal, her body feels normal. Her skin starts to blossom as a result of her decision. [If the dagger was Emery's choice:] Her fingers are burning. She casts her gaze downward. Godfire. Her veins pulsate with a sluggish, simmering flame that is bla

It was a lie, the quiet before the storm. In the empty space, three pedestals stood motionless and silent, observing her as if they were gods deferring judgment. A dagger with a black blade that glistened with ancient runes and vibrated with power beyond this world can be seen on the left. It beat. It recalled her. A golden, elaborate ring that shines too brightly for a space this hollow sits in the center. It appeared to be salvation. Or a glittering cage. A dark, smooth, blank, and innocent key is on the right. However, it was the realm's heaviest object. From this distance, she could sense it. As if gravity itself leaned in that direction. Emery stood between them, her lungs hardly remembering how to breathe, her breath seizing in her throat. It's this. The instant the cosmos had been turning back toward. The decision that had always been hers but wasn't just hers. Her hands shook. Not in terror. Using memory. Then— She took a step forward. She extended her han

Something ancient pumped through the air, not heat or cold. alive. The following step snapped back like elastic, the first one stretching into eternity. Here, the laws of distance did not apply. Or they had been rewritten if they did. Under her feet, symbols glowed—runes that glowed silver, gold, and something darker, like ink derived from the stars. Every time her foot touched down, more of them woke up, igniting a route that changed the more she attempted to follow it. They pulsed with her heartbeat. All at once, high-pitched, guttural, and musical voices murmured in the air. a language that she somehow grasped despite not knowing. "Emery." From all sides and none, her name was spoken. Before she even considered saying it, Emery's mouth came up with the name. It was waiting there, so sure, so familiar. Pain burned through her skull like a blade slicing right through it the instant it emerged in her consciousness. She shook from the sudden pain and gasped, sinking her fingers into the man's arms. The name escaped, barely within grasp. When she touched him, the man tensed. He strengthened his hold on her, as though preparing for the next move. His face was still expressionless, but there was something more in his keen, dark eyes. "Don't think about me." There was something almost regretful in his quiet voice. Emery's breath caught in his throat. "So why do I?" He didn't respond. There was a shudder in the room. The floor beneath them, the lamp, and the walls all wavered and warped like a water-shattered mirror. The tiny light from the carved symbols pulsed in time with the pounding in her head. It was falling apart here. Or perhaps—reforming. Another

Pain.. Emery was startled awake as it burned through her body like lightning. She inhaled sharply, taking in a breath that was too heavy and thick.
