Gautham stood there outside a building that looked like an office but the only problem was everyone inside was talking and laughing around. Not a single person was actually working.

There were about ten people just hanging around and making fun. One of them was even munching on snacks as he laughed around joking.

Gautham looked around confused not knowing whether to go in or not until he saw a room with a signboard Ms. Sindhuja Srinivas. At last, he was sure that he was in the right place.

He knocked on the door tentatively and a faint "come in" came from inside the room right after. He opened the doors and peaked in. There she was, wearing spectacles that were clutching onto the top of her nose; brows frowned from concentrating and she seemed frustrated as she signed some papers. Gautham cleared his throat to get her attention but Sindhu was already too into the work to notice it. So he had to knock on her table standing in front of her desk which finally got her attention.

"Oh hi, Gautham. What are you doing here??" Sindhu looked up at last and asked in confusion.

"I thought I would take you out for lunch for a change since you have already surprised me twice this week. You quite literally barged into my office and may I say "demanded" I come to lunch with you, all because you were "bored at your office" Gautham deliberately said it all too dramatically even air-quoting "Demanded" in order to add to the effect.

Sindhu gave him an unimpressed look but he can see her eyes brighten slightly which was worth the effort.

Sindhu was actually rubbing off of Gautham. He was never a dramatic person. But the fact that he could make such a cheeky gesture to fit in with her said a lot about his feelings towards her.

"Hahaha. Overdramatic much." She said with a dry face rolling her eyes but it quickly turned into a big fat grin

Gautham just grinned back at her and asked, “Are you sure your office is not running on loss? Because for a second I thought I entered a café rather than an office… nobody was working! Nobody even noticed me entering your office!” His voice was confused when he asked it.

But Sindhu’s brows frowned hearing it and she asked him to wait for 5 minutes in her office.

She went out and Gautham can clearly imagine her face frowning with the scene out of her office. He can even faintly hear her unimpressed speech to people outside. He thought her staff was going to get nicely from her and he was looking forward to seeing her bossy and overbearing. But his wish never came true as she seemed to be joking with them rather than scolding them.

"Very funny guys. I think you all had enough fun for one day at my expense. Guys, I know that I let you do whatever you want after you guys complete your work. Which is perfectly fine but can you guys at least keep it down a bit. And have enough sense to at least pretend to work when there is someone else in the office. My friends in the office and you dumb heads did not even bother to notice. Now he is going to think I am paying you guys for having fun." She said more exasperated than authoritative.

"What?? Seriously??!" Her staff chorused looking surprised at the door.

"But mam! Why are you trying to impress this friend of yours?" They teased her back.

"Shut up you dumb heads before I screw you guys and show you who the boss is!!" that will be Sindhu. Even when her words were harsh, there was no hostility in her voice.

Every other staff member gave her an unimpressed look as if they are sure nothing like that could ever happen even in their dreams.

"Why do I even try?! Anyways Arvind... I need you in my office. And you guys. At least make sure nothing is stolen. Have an eye on the doors for god's sakes." She added exasperated.

"Sorry, mam. It won't happen again. We will behave. I promise" at last one of the staff said seriously.

"No it won't" she simply said, with authority. But more than the authority in her voice, it was the overbearing aura in her eyes that showed the difference between when she was joking and when she was being serious. And all the staff nodded solemnly. Because even when they can joke around on a normal day, they really did not defy her when she was being serious.

She turned to her office satisfied. She frowned looking at Gautham standing behind her with an amused look. She just shook her head and went inside her office without really saying anything to Gautham. Gautham and Arvind followed her in with all her staff giving Gautham a curious glance.

Back in Sindhu’s office, Gautham sat on the couch while Arvind just stood there.

"Look, Arvind. I know you have practically run this office before me. I know you are more than capable but I don't understand why in hell you won't pass your exams."

Sindhu was practically glaring dagger while Arvind gave her a sheepish grin.

"I want you to go pack your desks. I can't keep you like this"

"But mam..." Arvind started but Sindhu cut him out with one look and he shut up gladly with a depressed look.

"I don't want you to be my employee. I want u to be a partner in this office. Do you think I kept the other room empty just for the fun of it? But I can't give you that office if you are not a CA. So I want you to pack your stuff today and head home. You have exactly a year. One whole year. I want you to complete your CA. I don't care if you just pass. I want the degree that's all. You get to step back into this office only when you complete your degree am I clear??"

Arvind gave her a quick nod. His face was still hung down.

"Look up Arvind. I know you hate exams. God knows how much I hated it. But you're going to go only so far without a qualification. Do you understand what I am saying??"

"I understand, mam. I won't let you down." Arvind assured her with a quick grin.

"Arvind, I know I don't have to do it but I am doing it. God, what's with you guys always arguing with me. I am seriously getting confused about who the boss is" Sindhu bickered. "Thank you, mam. I won't let you down. I promise. I will be back in a year." He said. The kinda respect he has for his boss is very evident in his voice. "I will hold the fort till then. You just focus on your exams. And if any of these dumb heads call you with doubts, just ignore them. Even they have to learn. Anyways I am going out for lunch, make sure the dumb heads don't set the office on fire okay" she said taking her bags. "Yes, mam," Arvind said with a salute jokingly and walked out of the office with a grin. At last, Sindhu's attention turned to Gautham and he was looking at her amazed. "

  • Little girl's wild side   I will be driving on our way back

After 2 hours of driving, they reached Mahabalipuram Beach. Gautham staggered from the back of the bike and he looked pale as if he might faint any moment. On the other hand, Sindhu had no expression on her face. After taking a few deep breathes, the darkness on her face evaded. Sindhu plastered a smile and turned to face Gautham and in an instant, her expression changed to concern and slowly to guilt. Was she that rash while she was driving?? Sindhu thought to herself. You probably drove like a maniac as always, you idiot! Her subconscious scolded her instantly. The next second she rushed to Gautham's side and held his arms for support and hurriedly explained. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I mean, in all the excitement of being behind wheels after soo long that I utterly forgot about you sitting behind me. Was it that bad??" Sindhu gave him her best puppy dog face filled with regret. Gautham just glared at her and said gritting his te

Gautham looked at the girl who was still tirelessly playing in the waves. Sindhu was fully drenched by now but that did not seem to faze her. Her laughter made him feel things he didn't know how to describe. He was not a sappy person and for him, the term ‘love’ relates to people he understands deeply and after spending a lot of effort and time together. He does not believe in sudden magic and sparks. But looking at that girl playing in the water, the sun descending behind her with crimson bleeding throughout the sky and her laughter ringer in his ears- he knew he was happy at that moment. And that happiness came because of her presence without her ever doing anything. But that was all he needed to know. He knew he could be happy with her. He knew if it was with her, he can make a family. And that is what he was looking for in a marriage…On an impulse, he stood up and sneaked behind Sindhu. But before he could scare her as he planned, she turned around and

After a while, Gautham reached out for Sindhu's hands and made her look at him, and asked in a soft voice, "Why did you panic??""You just caught me off guard I guess. Moreover, just the term "Marriage" scares me shitless." Sindhu brushed off Gauthams hands and walked away from the shore and sat on the sand. Seeing that Gautham was still standing, she patted the space next to her silently asking him to sit near her."As I said, you don't know me well Gautham.", Sindhu said looking sideways at Gautham.Gautham once again reached out for Sindhu's hands and held them in his. She thought about it for a minute and asked, "Do you like Maggie??" Gautham said, "Yes, why?"Sindhu did not answer but instead, directed him to drive to an apartment building near where they were. It was on the outskirts of the city. They were about half an hour away from her home.Gautham gave Sindhu a confused look. "Where is this exactly??""Oh, this... This is my apartment of sorts, I guess. My parents don't know about this place. Come on. Let's go." Sindhu said in a matter-of-fact voice."Well, that explained everything. Thanks for nothing." Gautham went into the kitchen and stood beside her. He could see the guilt and regret eating her up. He could feel her barely holding on. He felt as if one wrong move from him and she will break to pieces.Gautham carefully rubbed her head first and he tucked a few stray hairs behind her ears. He took the vessels from her hand and closed the taps. He gently pulled her so that she would face him. What he saw tugged at his heart. For once Sindhu seemed vulnerable. It seemed like she was showing her true self to him. The person she had hidden behind cold stares and cheeky grins."Hey... look at me," Gautham said softly. When their eyes met, her eyes told them all -her pain, her despair, her guilt, her regret, and her insecurities. Gautham was pretty close to his family, particularly to his mum and Renuka knew Gautham as the back of her hands."Don't tell me you have a problem with Sindhu's drinking habit. When they reached Sindhu's place, it was almost midnight. Gautham stopped the car outside Sindhu's place. Then he turned around towards Sindhu who was happily sleeping with her seat pushed down to the max and her legs hoisted over the dashboard in the front. She looked extremely peaceful and content. Gautham almost did not want to wake her but then he reached out and shook her awake. Sindhu blinked several times. She lifted her hands to rub over her eyes. But seeing as she never bothered to wash her hands after having snacks, Gautham hurriedly grabbed her hands. "Your hands are not clean. They still probably have spices from the potato chip you had earlier", Gautham said but Sindhu was still not fully awake and a little groggy so she did not comprehend what he was saying. By reflex, she tried to reach her eyes with her other hand. They were long used to Sindhu not showing up at night, unlike Gautham. Even when he was worried and anxious, Gautham still waited patiently for her. The cold air stung his skin making the hair in his hand standstill. At last, just before dawn, the roaring sound of the car awoke Gautham from his daze. He looked up only to see Sindhu get down from a red Audit. It was John’s car. Since Gautham had driven the car they came in, Sindhu borrowed one of John’s cars. “Why are you still up?” Sindhu asked coming towards Gautham. Both sides of the room were covered with shelves and they were all filled to the brim with books. But the wall straight opposite to the door was fully empty except for a huge piece of a painting of the mansion with a sunset in the background. The mansion was actually small compared to the background sky. And from the looks of it, it was probably painted by Sindhu. It was not a realistic painting. It was slightly abstracted. And like the ones in her apartment, the whole painting was done with reddish-yellow shades and blacks peeping here and there."That's Sindhu's handiwork, isn't it???" Gautham asked out loud. But the question was actually rhetoric.John looked up then followed Gautham's

It was almost sundown when Gautham suggested they take a break. Sindhu's legs were practically jelly. It has been long since she last roamed around so much. The park was pretty quiet since they were sitting at the far end. On the other side of the park, children were happily playing around with their parents hovering behind them. Sindhu had a small smile playing on her lips seeing them. Gautham followed her gaze and found a little girl with pigtails. She was pouting over something."You know she reminds me of Akira," Gautham said absentmindedly."Who is Akira??"
