Turning, Hailey saw Lady Moressett ascending the stairs, flanked by a throng of competitors. Moressett stood out among them, exuding a beauty and grace that the others lacked. Her skin glimmered under the soft light, and her dress was the most exquisite Hailey had ever seen—light and ethereal, a soft pink that suggested both innocence and allure.
Competition. This goddess-like figure was one of the women competing for the Alpha's attention. Hailey felt a tight knot in her chest. How could she possibly compete with that?
Moressett halted in front of her, smirking as she took in Hailey with a glance. "One would think that after your performance, you'd be ready for the ball."
A questionable sound came from one of the women beside her. "She reeks of hay and dung."
"Don't forget desperation," another chimed in, and they burst into laughter.
"Is there a reason you called for me?" Hailey asked, struggling to control her irritation, determined not to let it escape or risk shoving these women down the stairs.
Moressett stepped closer, a wicked smile playing on her lips. "Of course. I wanted to commend you. I've never met anyone as shameless as you."
Hailey executed a mock bow. "Well, the pleasure is all mine."
Leaning in, Moressett whispered conspiratorially, "Word has it that the Alpha already has his eye on someone. I'd hate to see you heartbroken when he takes my hand tonight."
Despite the hay in her hair and the dung on her cheek, Hailey stepped closer. "I won't be heartbroken because he won't be dancing with you, Moressett."
She turned and left before she could give in to the urge to yank on Moressett's beautiful hair. With a sigh, Hailey walked away, realizing she had made a bold statement. Now, the question lingered: where would she find a dress? More importantly, how could she rid herself of this awful stench?
......
"Enter," came Gamma Luis's muffled voice from the other side of the door after Hailey knocked.
He lifted his gaze from the papers cluttering his desk as she stepped into his study, a rueful smile forming on his lips. "Little Hailey," he cooed. "I leave for just one day, and I hear you've caused quite the commotion in the castle."
Heat rushed to her cheeks. Although Gamma Luis and Hailey weren't particularly close, she knew that her mischievous antics—especially her awkward attempts to get close to Alpha Rowan—had earned her a place in his thoughts.
"I'm sorry if I caused you any trouble," she said sheepishly.
He chuckled, gesturing for her to come closer. "It's never trouble when it comes to you. What can I do for you?"
As Hailey opened her mouth to respond, something in the corner of the study caught her eye. There, draped across a large couch, were several gift boxes bearing names, but atop them rested a breathtaking dress. Lady Moressett's attire paled in comparison to this masterpiece. Overcome with emotion, Hailey felt tears welling in her eyes.
If I wore that, I could pass for a Luna.
"What are those?" she asked, her eyes locked on the crimson dress.
"Luna Renesme requested that I gather gifts for the contenders who won't be chosen and will return home," Gamma Luis explained, with a slight pause. "The dress is for the woman the Alpha selects to be his Luna at the end of the competition."
Hailey forced herself to look away as she found Gamma Luis watching her intently, his sharp black eyes seeming to see through her thoughts. "I came here to ask for your help. My friend, Lovie, is facing banishment from the pack. Can you assist me? She has nowhere else to go. She's done nothing wrong; it was all my mistake, and she shouldn't have to pay for it."
Gamma Luis leaned back in his chair. "It'll be a bit challenging... but I'll see what I can do."
Hailey beamed with gratitude. "Thank you so much!" she exclaimed, unable to contain her excitement.
They engaged in light conversation afterward, but Hailey found her thoughts drifting back to the dress.
It was at that moment she made her second wildest decision. She lingered in the hallway until she spotted Gamma Luis leaving, then quietly slipped back into the study to "borrow" the dress. She also snagged a mask for good measure.
Of course, she planned to return them—after she stole the show.
.......
Meanwhile, Rowan had never been particularly fond of attending balls, but it was an inevitable part of his role as Alpha King. One might assume that such power would afford him the ability to avoid gatherings like this, yet the reality was quite the opposite.
"Lady Moressett looks perfect, don't you think?" his mother whispered in his ear for the third time, prompting him to glance in her direction.
Indeed, she was absolutely flawless—a woman of grace and refinement. Moressett bowed her head gracefully as she accepted a dance from Alpha Dover of the Northern Pack, hiding her blush behind her fingertips. She was precisely the kind of woman his mother envisioned as his Luna, and there was no doubt that she would make an excellent choice.
However, his wolf, Zeres, was not entirely fond of her. Rowan appreciated her but couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss.
Not that his opinion mattered; the decision regarding who would be named Luna did not rest with him alone. It was about what was best for the pack, and at this moment, Moressett appeared to be the ideal candidate—the only candidate.
"Yes, Mother," he replied, his gaze drifting toward the drinks being served. It had been a long day, and he was in need of one.
"Perhaps we should cancel the selection and simply name her Luna," his mother suggested.
Rowan met her hazel eyes. "You know it would cause an uproar among the packs if they thought I was favoring one contender over the others."
She sighed in frustration. "I just want this to be over. We've already had one incident with that mad woman. It would be simpler to make a decision now and send the others back home. I'm sure Moressett would excel at any task given to her."
That mad woman—Hailey Griffin. Rowan had been taken aback by her bold declaration. She claimed to love him, and it was the most amusing thing he had heard in ages. She challenged him, and Zeres had stirred with excitement, compelling him to make that foolish bet. He should have had her thrown into the dungeons for her insolence; he was not a man who tolerated disrespect in any form.
But her eyes... they held an undeniable allure. Looking into her gaze felt like a lover's embrace, and he found himself ensnared, captivated by the desire to please her. For a fleeting moment, he had felt vulnerable, clinging to his anger to keep himself grounded.
Could she be a witch?
No, witches didn't exist.
So what could she be? No wolf or being should possess that much power in a single gaze. It unsettled him in ways it shouldn't, stirring feelings he couldn't quite comprehend.
'Goddess, I need a drink.' Rowan uttered.
"The attacks have escalated this week," Ruel said, sniffing Rowan's drink before passing it to him. No matter how many times Rowan insisted it was unnecessary, Ruel had made it his mission to do so ever since the poisoning incident with wolfsbane last year that nearly cost Rowan his life.Luis clapped him on the shoulder. "You really shouldn't discuss rogue attacks with so many beautiful women present." He paused to sip from his drink. "So, who will be your choice tonight, Alpha? Moressett? Hanna looks rather appealing as well."Ruel scoffed, handing Rowan his drink. "Hanna's too timid for Rowan. He'd break her within a week."Rowan chuckled at that and took a sip from his glass, his eyes scanning the crowd for another option. It was a futile effort; no one eclipsed Moressett."You'll have to make a decision soon, Alpha," Luis remarked. He was right. The guests were starting to direct their attention toward him, the women blushing and adjusting their bodices to make themselves appear
As Hailey made to pull away, she felt his fingers grip her waist tightly, causing her breath to catch as the warmth of his touch seeped through her dress, marking her skin. A shiver ran through her as he held her against his chest, gazing down at her with eyes darkened by desire. "Who are you?" he asked. Her lips parted in response, but before she could speak, he bent slightly, sending a gasp from her lips as his hand slipped under her knee, lifting her leg to hook it around his waist—entirely a part of this seductive dance. Yet, she sensed a boundary had been crossed, moving from mere dancing to igniting a hunger within him.Anger flared within her, mingling with the heat as his fingers traced up her thigh, moving higher toward her hips, and settling at her waist as he dipped her low, as if she might tumble. But his grip tightened around her waist at the last second, holding her steady, and she found herself lost in his striking gaze that shimmered with an intensity she couldn't comp
Arrogant. Demeaning. Patronizing. Being the daughter of the next formidable Alpha after him had given her an inflated sense of confidence that she didn't deserve. This was yet another reason Rowan found himself unwilling to accept her as his Luna."I don't have anything to be sorry for," he replied coolly, locking her with a frigid glare. Her eyes filled with tears. "You picked her! That should have been my place! That dance belonged to me. Your mother promised—""My mother does not make choices for me, Lady Moressett, and I recommend you modify your tone when addressing me. I won't accept any disrespect from you, no matter who you believe yourself to be."He let her see Zeres flash in his eyes as he allowed a portion of his aura to escape, saturating the room with palpable pressure. She paled and quickly bowed her head. "I apologize for upsetting you. I was frustrated that you chose the maid for your first dance, and I reacted poorly. I'm sorry.""Good," he responded after a brief pa
Asked Hailey approached the front, she noticed Gamma Luis leaning against the entrance door with his arms crossed. A proud smile lined his lips, making Hailey's cheeks flush, but her smile diminished when Lovie caught her eye from afar.As soon as Lovie saw her, she turned and walked away. Lovie was still upset with Hailey and refused to engage or even meet her gaze, leaving Hailey feeling lonely. She had attempted to apologize multiple times but had run out of methods to repair their friendship.True to his promise, Gamma Luis had persuaded Beta Ruel to lighten Lovie's punishment. Now they were both cleaning the stables every day without breaks in between their shifts.Honestly, Hailey couldn't fault Lovie for her anger.Luna Renesme narrowed her eyes as she handed Hailey her sheet, which bore a single word: "Neither."Staring blankly, Hailey responded, "I selected neither option. As Luna, it is not my duty to determine which life holds more value or whose should be sacrificed for th
Rowan closed the distance again, kissing her lightly. The scent of the other woman flooded his senses once more. His mother was right; he needed to put a stop to this. He couldn't be drawn to the touch of an Omega. He couldn't lose his mind over a callous woman. He deepened the kiss, and Moressett moaned, grabbing his jacket tightly enough to tear it. Searching for the doorknob behind him, he twisted it as he held her waist firmly. Her fingers tangled in his hair as he kicked the door shut, and just as he began to lead her toward the bed, a soft yawn broke the silence behind them.Moressett yelped, startled by the figure at the foot of his bed, and Rowan jerked back, staring down in disdain.Violet eyes met his and held. Hailey Griffin was lying in his bed, covered by his duvet, her blonde hair cascading down her shoulders as she sat up, her creamy skin exposed."Hey, Rowan," she muttered, her voice heavy with sleep. Was he in some alternate reality where Hailey Griffin just called hi
Hailey felt her eyelids growing heavier as she yawned for the third time in under a minute. She hadn't gotten enough sleep the night before. With a flurry of chores to finish before dawn, she managed only an hour of rest. Now, she trudged down the narrow path leading to the Goddess's temple, lagging far behind the others.Keeping up with the agile Alpha females was a challenge. The first to reach the temple would earn a head start in their next task: diving into the sacred lake behind the temple to retrieve the Moon Crest, Luna's symbol of power. It was said to have been passed down from Luna to Luna, originally owned by the Goddess herself.Unfortunately, Hailey was at a severe disadvantage—she was a terrible swimmer. The thought of drowning among the rest made her shiver violently. She would have preferred to skip this task, but that would disqualify her.Suddenly, someone bumped into her, causing her to lose her footing and fall hard onto her backside. Wincing, she looked up to see
Flailing, she gripped Moressett's coat tightly as she fought to reach the surface. Moressett grunted, struggling to shake her off, but Hailey knew she would drown if she let go. Moressett was strong enough to lift them both, and Hailey was determined not to release her. They would both perish if she did.Desperately holding onto Moressett's clothing, Hailey felt her hand slip, snagging something from around her neck in the process. The cool air wrapped around her skin as Moressett broke the surface, pulling Hailey up with her.Hailey coughed, spitting out water while grasping her own neck, only to find it bare. When she opened her eyes, everyone was staring at her: Luna, Alpha Rowan, Beta Ruel, Gamma Luis, and the guards. Their expressions were inscrutable, and in her hand, she held something reflecting the sunlight. Alpha Rowan's ears were tinged red at the tips, and his gaze kept dropping to her chest, though she couldn't fathom why.Cathy emerged first, breaking the connection with
A the door jolted Hailey from her thoughts, prompting her to push herself up with a groan. Her muscles protested, and she limped toward the door, apprehensive about who might be waiting outside. It was probably Lovie; she was Hailey's only visitor. Even though Lovie was still giving her the silent treatment, the prospect of seeing someone was a relief. But when Hailey opened the door, she found herself face-to-face with Luna Renesme.Without thinking, Hailey hunched her back and bowed. "L-Luna, I wasn't expecting you—"Renesme let out a frustrated sigh. "And why would you? It is inappropriate for someone of my status to visit the servant's quarters."Hailey noticed Renesme scrunch her nose in disgust, clearly affected by the foul odor wafting from the nearby toilet. Despite their attempts to keep it clean, the stench lingered. After enduring it for so long, Hailey had become somewhat desensitized."If there's something I can do for you..." Her sentence trailed off as she watched Renes
Rowan navigated through the throng of merchants selling goods and plants that had long been banned from the streets of his kingdom. They veered away from a growing crowd gathered around a street fight, the air filled with shouts and curses that momentarily deafened him. Hailey abruptly halted in front of a tall, distinct brick building, flanked by two guards nearly as tall as he was. Holding up several coins, she flashed a grin. "Who's fighting today, mate?"The casual use of "mate" stirred something within him, prompting Rowan to pull his fingers from her grasp as he took a deep breath. The guard on the left recited a list of names, and she placed a bet on someone known as the "Shadow Reaper.""I thought you didn't have any money," he remarked as they made their way into the establishment.Hailey shrugged, a small figure amidst the imposing presence of hardened mercenaries. "I don't. It's yours."Instinctively, he reached for his pouch in his pocket, but his hands came away empty. Ah
Rowan POV.Rowan watched as Hailey approached, struggling to hold back a smile. She wore a ragged tunic more fitting for a peasant, paired with pants on the verge of becoming rags and boots so worn they were nearly more hole than shoe. Her appearance was undeniably comical. A brown leather belt cinched her waist, with a dagger in full view, while gloves, weathered and stained with unknown substances, enveloped her hands. A scarf haphazardly wrapped around her hair failed to hide several strands that framed her face.At a quick glance, she might resemble a young boy. Yet, her captivating lavender eyes revealed a persistent playfulness. Her lips, unmistakably feminine, along with a petite nose and dimples that appeared when she pouted, highlighted that Rowan was the one truly looking absurd. "Rowan, are you trying to get mugged?" she questioned, closing the distance between them with assured strides.Rowan enjoyed the way she spoke his name—like a gentle caress, filled with promise and
Luis stared at her blankly. "You do."Abruptly, Hailey sat up and leaned closer, brushing her hair to one side. "I need to make sure."Alpha Rowan's words had kept her awake all night. How could she be certain she was an Omega? Her mother had claimed she was, but she had also repeatedly mentioned that Hailey was born wrong. Not only had he sniffed her, but he had also asked if she had ever been to the Howling. Most wolves experienced their first shift during the gathering, where being among kindred spirits helped.Normally, Hailey wouldn't allow herself to be unsettled by something like this. She knew who she was. However, she had never had reason to question her mother's assertions about her. Doubts had never plagued her before, and whenever she felt even a hint of uncertainty, she would squash it. It was hard to be confident and master the art of seduction if she allowed doubts to consume her.Asking Gamma Luis to sniff her was a desperate attempt to silence the nagging feeling that
In the Rise City There's a fire.Nerissa wheezes as she grabs her night robe from its stand, quickly draping it around herself. The sound of panicked servants reverberates through the hall."The stables!""The ladder!""Water!"She collides with Alpha David in the hallway. His maroon gaze briefly lingers on her, darkening with lust, and she fights the urge to roll her eyes. "What's happening?""It seems we may be under attack by rogues," he murmurs, his eyes straying to her chest. "You should rest. This is being handled, princess."Nerissa frowns. "The castle hasn't been invaded in ages. How did they breach the wall? Have they been captured?" She takes a cautious step forward, but David blocks her way."Don't concern yourself with such matters. It doesn't befit you. No one appreciates a nosy woman. Join your mother in the Grand Hall with the other women. Your father and I will take care of it."She stares at him, her lips parting in disbelief. "Nosy? Who do you think you are, telling
Hailey turned her gaze toward the starless sky, a cold breeze lifting her hair, and a small smile played on her lips. "I'll never let you grieve alone again." Tilting her head, she looked deeply into his eyes. "You're not alone. Lean on me, Rowan. Let me help you find rest."Her cheeks flushed a vibrant shade of red, and Rowan's hands clung to her side to prevent her from toppling over. Somehow, their attempt at getting him to sleep had resulted in them polishing off an entire bottle of wine. The light and joy sparkling in Hailey's eyes made Rowan realize, for the first time since they had met, just how young she truly was—a stark contrast to the ancient, cunning soul he had grown accustomed to. She appeared...mortal. More vulnerable. Almost human. He found himself staring, a bit embarrassed, as she animatedly rambled about everything and nothing, giggling at her own jokes.Hailey suddenly stumbled, tripping over her gown, and as Rowan caught her, she erupted into laughter, covering h
As Rowan handed his sword to Elvis, he discarded the wedding band onto the floor and opened the locket. Inside were two women—one with blonde hair and vibrant green eyes, cradling a small girl in her arms. He pulled the picture from its confines and tossed it to Elvis. "Have Dennis scour the villages in Eldavis. Eliminate them on sight."The man lunged, growling and roaring, validating Rowan's suspicions. Rogues often behaved similarly. They severed ties with their families because Rowan was merciful enough to punish only the wrongdoer. Yet today, he lacked the will to show mercy. His subjects had perished, and the council of elders and Alphas demanded action. Burn the villages along the border. Execute all rogues!Elvis stared at him in shock but said nothing as he quickly left the room. The rogue snarled, rage blazing in his eyes as he struggled against the chains binding him. "I'll kill you!"Leaning back in his chair, Rowan crossed his ankle over his knee and rested his head again
Rowan POV.Rowan's footsteps echoed through the desolate hallway, the silence between each step filling him with unease. He seldom ventured into this part of the castle—the dungeons. It reminded him too vividly of the visits he had made to his father before the execution.A soul-chilling howl sliced through the air, followed by a desperate cry. Luis walked ahead, signaling the guards to let them pass. Rowan glared at him, battling the anger boiling within. It had been four days since he had last spoken to Hailey, four days since he tucked her in for the night. She wouldn't even spare him a glance, the ungrateful witch, nor would she engage with him. For four long days, he had been on edge, dreading what she might do next and when she would next invade his stu
Attempting to speak, her face crumpled as searing pain shot through her throat. She wanted to tell him she was fine, that it was just tea and grapes—she'd endured worse. Yet, despite her resolve, she didn't feel right. The day's events had dragged her back years, to a time when her mother attended to the wounds she herself had inflicted. Her body trembled with fear, hatred, and sorrow. Her fingers clutched the tub's edge as she tried to pull herself out, only to slip back in. Alpha Rowan reached for her, but she pushed his hand away. She wasn't weak; she could manage to get out herself. He let her try, again and again, until she finally broke down in sobs, attempting to crawl out. She avoided his gaze, afraid of the pity she'd find in his eyes. One final attempt saw her falling forward, bracing for the impact of the tub
That did the trick, and Ava hurried to comply.Hailey steadied herself, rising to her feet. "I really wouldn't—" But a sudden blow silenced her, sending shockwaves through her body. She stumbled back, gasping as she struggled to focus. Her head throbbed from the previous day's pain, feeling as if it might explode at any moment."Hold her," she vaguely heard Moressett order, and Hailey swung her fist blindly, aiming for anything in her path. Perhaps she should have stayed in her room and eaten breakfast there. Even if she screamed, there was no guarantee anyone would hear her—no one that mattered. Alpha Rowan, Beta Ruel, Gamma Luis, and the other officials had been in a meeting all morning. No one would come for her. It was just the eleven of them in the room,
